Condensing Unit Guidance Notes
Foster can offer the complete package on request. The following is a guide of considerations for typical
applications. Please note that as each installation is unique, it is the responsibility of the installing
engineer to select the components relevant to prevailing site conditions and the customer’s intended
method of operation.
Condensing Unit
The conditions experienced by the condensing
unit will vary considerably throughout the cycle.
The capacity has been defined in given conditions
but please ensure that:
When selecting the condensing unit for Blast
Chilling, the evaporating temperature range
should be a minimum of +10°C to -25°C to cope
with the pull down load.
When selecting the condensing unit for Blast
Freezing, the evaporating temperature range
should be a minimum of +10°C to -40°C on MBCF
occasional freeze models. The MBCF models use
MOP expansion valves rated at -15°C.
Condensing Unit Components
Where the dealer supplies the Condensing Unit,
all of the following items need to be supplied:
Condensing Unit, Oil Separator, Oil Separator
Heater, HP/LP switch, Sight Glass, Drier Suction
Line Vibration Eliminator, Crankcase Heater, Liquid
Line Solenoid Valve (must be fitted at liquid inlet
to Blast Chiller Coldroom, not at the Condensing
Unit), Power Box (this should contain a minimum
of lockable isolator, circuit breakers, contactors and
current overloads to suit the Condensing Unit).
The start method for the compressor will depend
on equipment size and site conditions. ie. DOL,
Star Delta, PWS.
On MBCF models only, an interlock preventing
both defrost and pump down simultaneously
may be required depending on rating of electrical
supply. Suction Line insulation, refrigerant and
electrical cabling also to be supplied by the dealer.
The installer should consider aspects such as
capacity control, condenser head pressure control
and unloaded start (as deemed necessary by site
conditions and anticipated usage).
For additional protection, the following
should be considered:
Phase failure, Suction Line Accumulator
(particularly with short pipe runs where there is
potential for liquid return).
Recommendations
To facilitate fault diagnosis we suggest that a shut
off valve and sight glass be installed just after
the liquid line solenoid valve and a pressure line
connection in the suction line exit from the Blast
Chiller/Freezer.
Where a double module unit is installed, it is usual
to supply a common liquid and suction line from
the condensing unit to the Blast Chiller/Freezer
and branch off on top of the coldroom. Fit shutoff
valves and sight glass in each branch after the tee.
Additional Information
MBCT models are supplied floorless for
blast chilling application only.
MBCFT models are supplied complete with
25mm floor and are suitable for occasional
blast freezing and non-ground floor sites.
Chilling capacity 70ºC to 3ºC in less than
90 minutes within specifications. Entry
temperature of up to 90ºC for chilling.
Freezing capacity from 70ºC to -18ºC in
less than 240 minutes within specifications.
All models supplied less condensing
unit for remote applications. Separate
electrical supply required for condensing
unit (3 phase + neutral). For full details on

The Foster Refrigerator Corporation was launched
in 1946 in Hudson New York by Larry H. Foster.
Foster Refrigerator (UK) Ltd. was registered in 1968,
and our King’s Lynn factory opened the same

The plant was extended two years later, and the
site has grown over the years – Foster now has six
plants, spread across 14 acres.

Cabinets and Integral Products
ZERO% Interest Free Credit
- Prices for standard integral units include the supply of
condensing unit(s), valves and controls. These units are
self contained and are ready for installation on delivery.
- Prices for “less condensing unit or remote models” include the
fitting of expansion valves, thermostats and time-clocks
as well as the provision of sealed liquid and suction line
pipes terminated in the ‘unit compartment’.
Prices do not include condensing unit.
NOTE: Condensing units must not be installed on top
of remote cabinets – some additional stressing has to
be built into a cabinet to withstand the weight of a
top-mounted unit.
IMPORTANT! Appliances must be positioned in well
ventilated areas permitting constant free flow of air
to the condensing unit, not exceeding specified ambient
temperature. Condensers must be cleaned as and when
required to allow suficient air flow. The frequency will be
dependent on site conditions.

Trolley Loading and Modular Products
- INSTALLATION
Modular products are supplied with a panel plan and
installation guidelines. NB. Modular products must be
installed on a clear, flat, level, smooth and hard base.
- RECESSED FLOORS
Where floors, perimeter walls, or screeds are to be
recessed for flush entry, a relevant recess depth
from finished floor level should be provided. Please
specify/indicate ‘recessed floor’ and ‘wiper gasket
door’ requirements on order instructions.
- SITE ACCESS
We recommend that site access is checked to ensure
that products, particularly modular panels, can be
manoeuvred to the point of installation.
- HEAVY DUTY APPLICATION
We recommend the use of appropriate wall
protection and/or floor reinforcing/insitu floors for
any uses other than pedestrian/light trolley. Please

the threshold where possible. This is based on ground floor site with clear access (between road and dealer premises/
customer site e.g. no double lines, no vehicle restrictions etc. and no steps or stairs, no obstacles or insufficiently wide or
tall doorways). Product must be located without additional equipment or site modifications. The time taken to expedite
the delivery should take no more than 30 minutes from arriving at site, any longer due to site restrictions/delays could
result in an aborted delivery and associated charges being applied.
Please check that route through building is sufficient for the dimensions of the
product being delivered. Installation services based on ground floor site with clear
access to the final installation position: no steps or stairs (unless stated as non ground
floor as specified above), no obstacles e.g. insufficiently wide or tall doorways, and
product can be located without additional equipment or site modifications. Includes
unpacking, removal of packaging, placement, installation of fittings, connection by 3
pin plug to a standard 230v supply within 2 metres and start up at the time of delivery.
No electrical or plumbing work included. Installation & set to work deliveries not
available on any 16/20 amp 1 phase and 3 phase products requiring electrical work, or

tonne lorry (approximate equivalent size of a double decker bus) with a two-man crew, tail lift and stair-walker. It is your responsibility to ensure we are made aware of any delivery restrictions prior to undertaking the delivery and these issues may include, but are not limited to, access to the location (low bridges/tight streets) and site access (building

Delivery services (excluding installation) will aim to get the cabinets over the threshold and/or to a covered point in the building of choice (not the point of installation) provided there is clear and level hard surface access. This does not include negotiating stairs or other obstructions. Whilst our Next Day Delivery service covers
most locations, we currently have some restricted areas affecting the extremities of England and Wales where we are unable to offer a 24hr service – please check at the point of ordering with us to confirm availability in your area. Counter top coolers and freezers
A plug ready range of stainless steel coolers and freezers for bottles that can be inset or surface mounted. Perfect for
serving refrigerated wines, liqueurs or vodka per glass rapidly at a fixed cold temperature. Counter top coolers & freezers
are available in 4 options: with a maximum capacity of 10 to 12 bottles of 1 litre and suitable as a cooler or as a freezer. The
VKHC/10 model can be built-in or built-on to the worktop and has a maximum capacity of 10 bottles. The VKHC/12 model
has been developed to be built into the work top and has a capacity of 12 bottles.

General notes

Remote models
- Prices for integral units include the supply of condensing
unit(s), valves and controls. These units are self contained and
are ready for installation on delivery.
- Prices for “remote models” include the fitting of expansion
valves, thermostats as well as the provision of sealed liquid
and suction line pipes terminated in the ‘unit compartment’.
Prices do not include condensing unit.
NOTE: Condensing units must not be installed on top
of remote cabinets – some additional stressing has to
be built into a cabinet to withstand the weight of a
top-mounted unit.
IMPORTANT! Appliances must be positioned in well
ventilated areas permitting constant free flow of air
to the condensing unit, not exceeding specified ambient
temperature. Condensers must be cleaned as and when
required to allow suficient air flow. The frequency will be
dependent on site conditions.

can be purchased from the Foster and Gamko Spares

SERVICE NOTES
All delivery vehicles are equipped with a two-man crew, tail lift and stair-walker. Product(s) will be delivered & placed over
the threshold where possible. This is based on ground floor site with clear access (between road and dealer premises/
customer site e.g. no double lines, no vehicle restrictions etc. and no steps or stairs, no obstacles or insufficiently wide or
tall doorways). Product must be located without additional equipment or site modifications. The time taken to expedite
the delivery should take no more than 30 minutes from arriving at site, any longer due to site restrictions/delays could
result in an aborted delivery and associated charges being applied.
Please check that route through building is sufficient for the dimensions of the
product being delivered. Installation services based on ground floor site with clear
access to the final installation position: no steps or stairs (unless stated as non ground
floor as specified above), no obstacles e.g. insufficiently wide or tall doorways, and
product can be located without additional equipment or site modifications. Includes
unpacking, removal of packaging, placement, installation of fittings, connection by 3
pin plug to a standard 230v supply within 2 metres and start up at the time of delivery.
No electrical or plumbing work included. Installation & set to work deliveries not
available on any 16/20 amp 1 phase and 3 phase products requiring electrical work, or
any products requiring plumbing.

A pre-delivery phone call will be scheduled to book in and confirm acceptance of the delivery and identification of any known or new delivery constraints. Standard delivery is an 18
tonne lorry (approximate equivalent size of a double decker bus) with a two-man crew, tail lift and stair-walker. It is your responsibility to ensure we are made aware of any delivery restrictions prior to undertaking the delivery and these issues may include, but are not limited to, access to the location (low bridges/tight streets) and site access (building
site, uneven ground, steps into the building, double yellow lines). Please check that route through building is sufficient for the dimensions of the product being delivered. The contact details provided should be for persons that are on site or have full understanding of the external and internal constraints at the intended delivery location. Aborted
charges will be made if delivery is not possible due to access, site or other restrictions previously not identified. All products will be shipped on pallets, however these will be removed on delivery for all products supplied with pre-fitted castors, unless listed below. This includes: XTRA, Slimline, blast chillers, undercounters, FlexDrawer, low level counters,
heated cabinets, and selected G2 (exclusions listed below). This excludes: Above cabinets fitted with legs/levelling bolts (incl. remotes), all Modular products, Roll-ins, Prep Stations, Pan Chillers, Ice Machines, all Gamko products, Drinking Water Coolers, Chest Freezers, Thaw cabinets, Fish cabinets, Dual Temperature cabinets, Bakery cabinets and
Multidecks/Display. Delivery services (excluding installation) will aim to get the cabinets over the threshold and/or to a covered point in the building of choice (not the point of installation) provided there is clear and level hard surface access. This does not include negotiating stairs or other obstructions. Whilst our Next Day Delivery service covers
most locations, we currently have some restricted areas affecting the extremities of England and Wales where we are unable to offer a 24hr service – please check at the point of ordering with us to confirm availability in your area. We are working on programmes to continually improve our coverage in future, so please check back with us on a regular
basis as more areas are extended to be within next day catchment.
