Economic Development:
Phase 2 has begun!
LRT Phase 2 is coming to Orléans! How
does LRT benefit the Heart of Orléans?
Phase 2 will include 12 km of rail and
five new stations with two of them in
very close proximity to our district. The
crew has already started preparatory
work along the East Extension corridor,
at Ottawa Road 174. Kiewit-Eurovia-
Vinci have completed significant
geotechnical investigations via borehole
drilling and they continue to remove a
few trees and vegetation (only what is
required for construction) on both the
north and south sides of OR 174.
Work has also begun on the slight
relocation of highway ramps and lanes
at the Montreal Road Interchange.
These activities are all required to begin
station and guideway construction next
year.
For the time being, construction
activities will be listed on the city’s
website as they get underway. You
can also check out the conceptual
renderings for new LRT stations by
clicking on each station. Please note
these renderings do not represent final
configuration and design, and updated
images are expected at a later time.
When businesses realize the positive
impact this major transportation
addition will have on our district, many
may think seriously of relocating to this
area, adding benefits and value to our
community.
The light rail will be accessed from
both sides of the highway. There will be
additional Park and Ride stations that
will have direct access to the upgraded
transit system, located in Chapel Hill,
Blackburn Hamlet and Beacon Hill.
The first station in our district will be
the Jeanne D’Arc Station, located in the
middle of the highway so the traffic on
both sides of the highway will not be
affected.
The next station is situated at Orléans
Boulevard. The platform will be located
below Orléans Boulevard in the median
of OR 174. Sidewalks and entry plazas
will be sized to accommodate the
number of pedestrians and cyclists,
as required to serve the public along
Orléans Boulevard, the bus stops, and
the passengers transferring from bus
to train.
The third station that leads to our
district is at Place d’Orléans Shopping
Centre, located at the crossing of 174
and Orléans Boulevard. There will be an
additional foot bridge with the existing
one remaining to service the influx of
commuters.
This brings us back to our original
question: how is LRT going to benefit
our businesses?
We will hope that we see some infill
in the form of mixed use buildings in
addition to some new development
around the stations themselves. Having
more residents and perhaps a large
employer or two translates into more
purchasing power, which means money
stays right here in our community.
