Avebury Park was filled with laughter last week at the teddy bear’s picnic. Children under five took their
favourite teddies along and were treated to a show by the Natural Magic Pirates. Honey sandwiches and
teddy bikkies were shared among the crowd. Isaac Lyons (left), six months, and five-month-old Lachie
Sandilands were among those who attended.

regarding
compliance
of gas filling
station
• By Claire Booker
REDWOOD RESIDENTS have
gone back to the city council in
a bid to get answers over a gas
filling station they are concerned
about.
The Redwood Business and
Residents Group has made a deputation
to the Papanui-Innes Community
Board asking for an update
on the city council’s compliance
investigation into the Genesis Gas
site on Main North Rd.
They first raised concerns about
the site in October last year, but
have not heard how the investigation
was proceeding.
Group spokeswoman Donna
Brenssell said residents’ concerns
increased following the gas explosion
in Northwood in July.
The city council would not
give Nor’West News details of the
investigation.
Said a city council spokesman:
“The council has an open compliance
investigation in relation to
land use activities at this site. This
investigation is ongoing and no
further comment will be made at
this time.”

Call to axe pesky poplars
In Brief
• By Claire Booker
STICKY LEAVES from poplar
trees are damaging the $600,000
tennis courts in Bishopdale, and
after 50 years of putting up with
them, the tennis club has had
enough.
The Bishopdale Tennis Club
recently celebrated its 50th
anniversary and the trees have
been there just as long.
The six courts were repaired
twice after the earthquakes, at
a cost of $100,000 per court,
and the sticky yellow leaves
which are dropped by two
poplar trees which border
the club are frustrating its
members.
The leaves cause issues on
the court and stick to players
shoes, which are trodden into
the carpet of the clubrooms.
The trees roots have also
damaged the wastewater pipes
beneath the clubrooms, and
have smashed a skylight on the
roof when a branch fell.
In a bid to get the trees
removed, two club members
made a presentation to the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board at its most
recent meeting, and the board
requested that city council staff
look into the removal.
The club would like to see all
five of the trees removed, but
one member said the two trees
beside the clubrooms and car
parking space would be a good
start.
The trees also shade the courts
in the winter, which encourages
moss to grow, in turn making
the courts slippery and
dangerous to play on.
The club has offered to replant
smaller native trees if the
poplars are removed.
Club captain Andrew Stanton
said the issues from the trees are
only going to get worse.
“We are just sick of it,” he
said.
The trees may be considered
for removal as part of the
Bishopdale skate park
renewal.

A $20,000 bus shelter has been
approved for Greers Rd. The

Community Board approved the
installation of the shelter at 251
Greers Rd at its most recent meeting.
The bus stop at this site has an
average of 29 passenger boardings
per weekday.
RESTAURANT CLOSED
The China Kitchen restaurant in
Papanui which was damaged in a
fire in November is having to look
for new premises. The owners
Wesley and Stella Li found the
damage was more extensive than
it was initially thought, which
meant the business would not be
able to open in November as first
planned. The pair hope to find
suitable premises in Papanui in
time for the holiday season.
HEALTH CENTRE HOURS
Last week Nor’West News
reported the health centre on
Memorial Ave would be open
from 7am-9pm seven days a week.
This was incorrect, the resource
consent allows the operators to
have the centre open for these
hours, but it is at the discretion
of the operator. An additional
consent to be a 24-hour surgery
will not be applied for.

Update from council requested
•From page 1
The community board has
requested an update from the city
council.
Papanui Ward city councillor
and community board member
Mike Davidson had been aware of
the residents’ concern for “some
time.”
Cr Davidson hoped the residents
would have had a response
from the city council quicker, and
understood their frustration.
“There are certain things that
aren’t that easy to rush. It’s not
our position as councillors to try
and influence or put pressure on
that,” he said.
The owner of the site did not
return calls to Nor’West News.
CONCERNED: Redwood residents are waiting for the results
of an open compliance investigation launched by the city
council a year ago into the LPG gas refilling station on Main
North Rd.
Refuse disposal costs could increase
THE COST of taking your
rubbish to a metro refuse station
is going to increase under a new
Government plan released on
Wednesday.
It wants to progressively
increase the levy rate for landfills
that take household waste,
known as municipal landfills,
Associate Environment Minister
Eugenie Sage announced.
This could include the Styx
Mill EcoDrop in Redwood.
The proposals involve
encouraging more reuse and
recycling by progressively
increasing the levy rate for
landfills that take household
waste from the current $10 per
tonne. This could rise to $50 or
$60 per tonne by mid-2023.
“In the past decade, people
have sent nearly 30 million
tonnes of waste to municipal
landfills around the country - a
50 per cent increase in waste
that can often be recycled,
composted or reused,” Ms Sage
said.
The landfill levy could
expand to cover all landfill
types including industrial and
construction and demolition
fills, but not cleanfills or farm
dumps.
Better data collection will also
be sought about the waste we
are creating, and how we are
disposing of it.
HEALTHY: Sue Turner shows off All Right’s new card game,
which encourages kids to talk about their emotions.
Game to benefit mental health
THE ALL Right campaign is
launching a new resource to help
kids identify and manage their
emotions.
The Chitter Chatter card game
is now available at Christchurch
libraries and is designed to get
families together and talking
about emotions, empathy and
managing worries.
Each pack of the card game,
designed for 5-12-year-olds,
contains 40 challenges that can
be applied to one of 14 emotions.
Chitter Chatter scenarios include
explaining an emotion to an alien,
imagining a world where a certain
feeling doesn’t exist and acting
out emotions in slow motion.
All Right manager Sue Turner
said Chitter Chatter helps make
it normal and fun for families to
talk about emotions.
“Talking about how we’re feeling,
recognising a wide range of
emotions and learning how to
work with them all help us build
resilience and live more enjoyable
lives.
“As parents, we all have good
intentions to spend meaningful
time with our kids, but we don’t
always have a lot of time. Playing
Chitter Chatter for as little as five
minutes a week is a small thing
that can make a big difference,”
said Ms Turner.
Chitter Chatter packs
can be picked up for free at
Christchurch libraries for a
limited time, or ordered from
anywhere in New Zealand for a
small cost at www.allright.org.

Pupils graduate from ‘university’
YOUNG SCHOLARS from
Mairehau Primary School
walked across the stage in a
cap and gown in the first-ever
Children’s University graduation
ceremony.
It was a full house at the town
hall as 151 pupils from seven
schools across Canterbury and
Selwyn received their certificates
for completing the programme
on November 20.
The Children’s University
Canterbury Partnership programme
is the first of its kind in
New Zealand and is delivered
by Canterbury and Lincoln
universities.
Pupils took part in extracurricular
learning activities
including sports, on-campus
experiences and trips to learning
destinations to graduate the
programme.
Each pupil documented these
activities and the different locations
they completed them at in
a learning passport.
Twenty year 5 and 6 pupils
from Mairehau Primary participated
in the pilot programme,
and five of the school’s graduates
were presented with gold awards
for achieving more than 100
hours.
Said Mairehau Primary School
deputy principal Stephanie
Oates: “The graduation was a
huge highlight [for the pupils]
and gave them a sense of what it
would be like to be a real university
graduate.
“As a co-ordinator, I found it
a very worthwhile experience
which we will continue with
next year.
“Giving pupils the opportunity
to access a university campus
and gather hours as you would
papers when working towards
a degree, gave pupils a thirst for
knowledge and for doing well at
school,” Ms Oates said.
Children’s University Canterbury
Partnership chancellor
Professor James McWha presented
certificates to the graduates
in front of guests including
Mayor Lianne Dalziel.

$130k
playground
renewal
postponed
PADDINGTON Playground’s
$130,000 revamp has been
postponed until next year.
The Northcote site was expected
to receive a new modular play
item, a mega swing set, see-saw,
carousel and a wobbly frog rocker
by the end of this year.
But due to the delay in arrival of
new playground parts, the Northcote
community will have to make
do with the current playground
for another summer holiday.
The decision was made to
postpone the renewal to ensure
there would still be an operational
playground over the summer
holidays.
The city council received
mostly positive feedback for
the proposed renewal during a
consultation period from March
5 to April 7.
City council staff also attended
Breakfast Club at Northcote
School in late March to present
the playground renewal to approximately
50 children.
Children were asked to place a
sticker on their favourite piece of
play equipment, which was the
carousel.

Rangi Ruru take out water polo title
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
junior water polo team are the
best in the South Island, after
winning the South Island junior
secondary schools water polo
tournament for the second year
in a row.
The team played six roundrobin
games held at Blenheim’s
Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000
last weekend and went through
the rounds undefeated.
A fierce contest in the final
against Marlborough Girls’ College,
with the college having the
home advantage, saw the Rangi
side stay composed to take the
game and title with a 7-6 win.
Rangi retained the title the
team won in 2018, and students
Aggie Weston and Hayley Bond
were named in the tournament
team.
The team’s South Island title
came a week after beating St
Margaret’s College to win the
Canterbury title.
Rangi’s director of sport,
Mandy Anderson was proud of
the development of the water
polo programme at the school
over the last two years.
“I’d like to acknowledge all of
our coaches, and particularly Zoli
Boros, the New Zealand men’s
and secondary schoolboys water
polo coach, who is a significant
addition to our coaching talent at
Rangi.”

Entertainers draw the crowds at Celebrate Bishopdale
The Celebrate Bishopdale event last weekend
attracted a good crowd. The Bishopdale Skate
Jam was also held on November 24, where
people were able to make suggestions on
what they would like included in the new skate
park. Families were entertained by archery,
henna tattoos, climbing towers, a bouncy
castle, and even the chance to test their speed
against a police radar gun, as well as food and
local stalls.
Young dancers from MexidaNZ entertained the crowd.
The Scoil Rince Kay-Hallissey Irish Dancers
showcased their talent.
The Isleworth School kapa haka group were
among performers.

Deck the halls
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a decoration or two around the home.
Whether its outdoor lights with a
waving Santa or just draping tinsel across
your mantelpiece, there are many ways to
celebrate the festive season in your home.
Go natural
Driftwood painted white with LED lights
wrapped around, or pine cones with a
touch of silver spray paint, make beautiful
natural additions to the home at this time
of year. If you have a tree branch around
the home, why not cut it up into discs and
spray paint white stars and reindeer on the
disc. Drill a hole in the top and thread some
gardeners string through the hole and you
have an instant decoration to hang on the
tree or somewhere around the home. Cover
polystyrene balls in ripped linen, hessian
and cotton strips. These can either be hung
up or a number placed in a bowl on the
table.
Tinsel town
Many love the glitter and sparkle that
tinsel brings but how about using it in
different ways. A three-tiered cake plate
with tinsel laid on each plate with baubles
then placed on top, can look really
impressive as a centrepiece for the table.
Make your own wreath by wrapping tinsel
around and around a polystyrene circle.
Hang just as it is, or hot glue gun baubles
on to create extra wow.
Table setting
Sometimes the simplest decorations on
the table can look the most stunning. A
beautiful napkin rolled up with a piece of
red and white ribbon, or rosemary wreath
looks amazing. Why not place a hessian
runner down the middle of the table and
add greenery and candles in jars on top to
create a wonderful centrepiece.
If you have a children’s eating table, why
not put a long piece of brown paper as a
table cloth. Draw large circles where the
plates can go and write Christmas questions
beside each plate outline. A little bottle
with a red and white paper straw is great

too. Put a jar of red and green crayons on
the table. When the kids are finished their
dinner, they can play noughts and crosses
or hangman or just draw pictures.

style and every technique

Tasty Bites
Plant-based Middle
Eastern flavours
KIDSTUFF
Unique family
focused dance
studio
You have to make
this dish! Eggplant
would have to be our
favourite vegetable.
Slow-roasting eggplant
in smoked paprika and
pomegranate molasses
makes the flesh
deliciously soft and
bursting with Middle
Eastern flavours.
Cauliflower and tahini
add a creamy richness,
which is so delicious
with the punchy vibrant
salsa. If you are serving
this as a side dish, we
recommend pairing it
with slow-cooked lamb.
Pomegranate eggplant
with cauliflower tahini
puree & pine nut mint
salsa
Serves 2 as a main or 4 as
a side
Ingredients
Roast cauliflower + puree
1 head cauliflower
olive oil
sea salt
2 Tbsp tahini
juice of 1 lemon
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tsp sea salt
Eggplant
2 eggplants
4 Tbsp olive oil
2 tsp ground smoked
paprika
2 Tbsp pomegranate
molasses
sea salt and pepper
Salsa
2 Tbsp pine nuts, toasted
¼ cup pomegranate seeds
¼ cup green olives, pitted
and roughly chopped
1 Tbsp hemp oil or extra
virgin olive oil
zest and juice of lemon
handful mint leaves, finely
chopped
sea salt
To serve
rocket, tahini, smoked paprika
Directions
To make the roast
cauliflower
Heat oven to 200 deg C.
Finely cut up the
cauliflower and place on a
baking tray. Drizzle with
olive oil and salt, and mix
well.
Roast in the oven for
about 20-25min, or until
soft and golden. Once
cooked, remove from the
oven and allow to cool.
For the puree
Place ¾ of the roasted
cauliflower in a blender,
along with the tahini,
lemon juice,
garlic and sea
salt. Blend
until it is a
smooth puree.
Set aside.
If you like
an extracrispy
cauliflower garnish, return
the remaining roasted
cauliflower to the oven and
grill for 4-5min to make it
extra crispy. Alternatively,
leave as is.
For the eggplant
Cut each eggplant in half
lengthways, then criss-cross
the white flesh with a knife.
Place on a baking tray, skin
side down.
In a cup, mix together the
olive oil, smoked paprika,
pomegranate molasses and
salt and pepper. Pour the
mixture over the eggplants,
and generously rub into the
eggplants with your hands.
Sprinkle with some extra
salt before placing in the
oven. Bake at 200 deg C. for
about 40min.
For the salsa
Combine all of the
ingredients in a bowl. Set
aside and allow the flavours
to develop.
To serve
Spoon the cauliflower
puree on to each plate.
Place some rocket on the
bottom then add the baked
eggplant on top. Add a
generous spoonful of salsa
and a drizzle of tahini.
Lastly, sprinkle over
smoked paprika.

help is at hand with Snorex, an appliance
that prevents snoring, sleep apnoea, and
dry and raw throats.

for comfort, and a follow up service is
provided.
Denise Lim has been involved with
Snores for 22 years and has had a 98%

sleep apnoea, where
the person actually
stops breathing for
short periods.
It can cause
short-term memory
loss, tiredness and
contribute to high
blood pressure.
The Snorex
device does not feel
restrictive, is noninvasive
and carries
a money-back
guarantee.
Many people are referred by ear, nose
and throat specialists, however, anyone can
phone for an appointment.

HEALTH & AWARENESS
Treatment offered for
headaches, facial and jaw pain
NOR’WEST NEWS
The red areas are
the areas you feel
the pain, The black
crosses are the muscle
knots that cause the
pain in the red areas.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio, located in Colombo Street
Sydenham, focuses both on helping people stay physically fit and
healthy, and helping people to overcome various health problems.
As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk
explains, when our muscles tighten this
can refer pain to many of these areas
around the face and head. Dehydration
can be the catalyst for tightening the neck
muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the
ear, forehead and round the eye and jaw
joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis
muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which
can be confusing when the person visits
the dentist to have it seen to and the dentist
can’t find a reason for the recurring pain.
Teeth grinding at night and teeth
clenching during the day are also a major
cause of muscle tightening.
Physiotherapy treatment for these
problems is based on deactivating the
‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage
therapy to relax the muscles, which is the
least invasive and a very effective form
of treatment. Dry needling is another
technique used for muscle relaxation,
but is only used with the client’s consent,
Ietje says.
“We release the muscles to give
immediate relief, and at the same time
work on the cause. For example, we have
a feedback headband that is worn at night
to help people to learn not to clench their
teeth while they’re asleep. We also work
on the client’s cervical or neck part of the
spine, where overuse can cause muscles to
tighten, creating pain.”
Teaching self-management of stress
is an important aspect of the clinic’s
treatment as well as teaching breathing
techniques, which go hand in hand with
managing stress.
See us for headaches,
facial or jaw pain before
February, mention this
article and save $45.00
on your first treatment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample
parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz

REAL ESTATE
Spirited living: A blend of old and new
3 Cranmer Square (25 Armagh Street) Christchurch
Auction: Thursday 19 December 2019, unless sold prior
4 bedrooms | 4 bathrooms | 3 living rooms | 2 dining rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | 2 off-street carparks | Listing PI62576
This utterly unique home takes an iconic
piece of local history, adds a remarkable
contemporary dwelling alongside and wraps
them together with loving care - and clever
interior design - all in a sensational innercity
location. Enjoying a leafy outlook across
Cranmer Square, it’s just a four-minute stroll
to Hagley Park, 6 minutes to Victoria Street
or 11 minutes to Riverside Market and
the heart of the city. Zoning for Elmwood
School, Heaton, Boys’ High and Girls’ High,
as well as proximity to private schools,
ensures this is also a practical family home.
Incorporating the heritage-listed
Cranmer Bridge Club building, designed
by Samuel Hurst Seager, the owners
embarked on an ambitious four-year
project to design and build a new home
on the site (a process featured on Grand
Designs NZ). A spectacular soaring atrium
combines old and new, pulling light into
the home and drawing guests upstairs to
the contemporary living space. A black
interior offsets the warmth of timber and
frames glimpses of the world beyond
through carefully placed windows. Openplan
living and dining flows to the kitchen
and breakfast room - a visual feast of
cathedral ceilings, rich textures and cleverly
placed lighting (both natural and electric).
A sheltered terrace invites outdoor living
and a separate media room and bedroom
(utilised as an office) complete this level.
Downstairs, the master suite includes a
WIR and private bathroom, and there’s
a second bedroom and bathroom, large
workshop/utility space and double internalaccess
garage. In the old timber building,
original details are lovingly restored and
the space has been repurposed as a selfcontained
space with studio bedroom,
separate lounge, kitchenette and bathroom.
This is your opportunity to own a truly
iconic piece of Christchurch.
