Cuddly teddies star attraction at picnic
Avebury Park was filled with laughter last week at the teddy bear’s picnic. Children under five took their
favourite teddies along and were treated to a show by the Natural Magic Pirates. Honey sandwiches and
teddy bikkies were shared among the crowd. Isaac Lyons (left), six months, and five-month-old Lachie
Sandilands were among those who attended.

wetlands
back to life
A PLOT of land in Ferrymead once
used as industrial space has been
transformed into a reserve teeming
with native bush and wildlife.
Charlesworth Reserve and Wetland
is one of the projects spearheaded
by the Avon-Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai Trust.
The trust was formed in 2002
with support from the city council,
Environment Canterbury and Ngai
Tahu.
Its aim is to enhance and sustain
the Avon-Heathcote Estuary area
by creating healthy eco-systems,
protecting natural resources,
monitoring and maintaining land,
and connecting the community.
The trust is funded by Rātā
Foundation, and chief executive
Leighton Evans said he is “in awe”
of the work staff and volunteers
have done.
“It’s incredible to see how much
work and effort has been put in by
the trust and the community to
bring these wetlands back to life.
“Volunteers are the backbone of
the community sector and have
been instrumental in ensuring
the Ihutai project and its wetland
remain an environmental asset to
Christchurch for generations to
enjoy.” •Turn to page 4

YOUNG SCHOLARS from
South Christchurch schools
walked across the stage in the
first-ever Children’s University
graduation ceremony.
It was a full-house at the
town hall as 151 pupils from
schools including Bromley
School, Te Waka Unua and Te
Pā o Rākaihautū received their
certificates for completing the
programme on November 20.
The Children’s University
Canterbury Partnership programme
is the first of its kind in
New Zealand and is delivered
by Canterbury and Lincoln
universities.
Pupils engaged in extracurricular
learning activities
including sports, on-campus
experiences and trips to learning
destinations to graduate the
programme.
Each pupil documented these
activities and the different locations
they completed them at in
a learning passport.
The programme has learning
locations across Christchurch
that include the Canterbury
Museum, Christchurch Art
Gallery, libraries and Canterbury
University and Lincoln’s
campuses.
Said Bromley School year 6
pupil Tyler Turnbull: “I loved
going to lots of different places

that I hadn’t been to before, that
was really fun! The best part of
it all was graduating. We got to
dress up and go to the town hall
and get our certificates.”
Bromley School principal
Scot Kinley said completing the
programme was a great achievement.
“The Children’s University
helped break down invisible
barriers that may inhibit children
seeking further learning. With
strong parent support and a good
work ethic they can achieve a lot
more than they may have considered
possible. The other invisible
barrier that may manifest as fear
was broken as they realised that
they were capable of the challenge,”
he said.
Children’s University Canterbury
Partnership chancellor
Professor James McWha presented
certificates to the graduates
in front of guests including
Mayor Lianne Dalziel.
“It is an honour and a privilege
to be presenting certificates to
the first New Zealand group to
graduate as part of this partnership.
The interest in the programme
has been overwhelming
and we look forward to expanding
the programme so more
children across Canterbury can
take part,” Mr McWha said.
Canterbury University vicechancellor
Professor Cheryl de
la Rey encouraged the graduates
to discover their potential,
dream big and become excited
about learning.

different subjects and consider
what tertiary options are
available to them. Learning
is a lifelong journey and this
programme focuses young
minds on a positive path to
learning something from every
activity they do and experience
they have,” she said.
Said Lincoln University acting
vice-chancellor Professor Bruce
McKenzie: “The Canterbury
[University] partnership allows
for so much learning variety. A
student could visit the Art Gallery
one day and explore crop science
on one of Lincoln University’s
farms the next day. For some
students this programme is
the only way they will get to
experience this type of learning.”
PHILLIPSTOWN BAD SMELL
The installation of a new odour
treatment unit at Olliviers Reserve,
Phillipstown has started
and should be completed by late
December. This is to address the
bad smell which comes from the
area’s sewer system.
YOUTH GRANT
A grant of $500 has been
given to 16-year-old Paigan-
Lilly Louise Watson-Hall from
Woolston towards Linwood
College’s tour of Vietnam next
year. The funds came from the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board’s Youth
Development Fund. Students
will visit historical places starting
in Hanoi where they will
visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum,
Colonial Presidential Palace, Ho
Chi Minhs House, One Pillar
Pagoda, Temple of Literature,
Hoa Lo Prison and Hoan Kiam
Lake.
FIRE CALL-OUTS
Firefighters were sent to a
Sumner school on Wednesday
to find the alarm had been
set off by burnt noodles. Fire
and Emergency New Zealand
spokesman said one Sumner
crew attended the callout to Star

at about 12.40pm. However, on
arrival, they found someone had

FLOURISHING: The Avon-
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
has transformed the wetlands.
Trust transforms
wetlands
•From page 1
Trust chairman Dr Kit Doudney
said the group has come a long
way since forming almost two
decades ago.
“Charlesworth Reserve is a
great example of how an entire
landscape has been transformed
and returned to its natural state,”
he said.
“Over almost 20 years, the land
has gone from being an industrial
plot to a natural wetland.
“By planting native bush and
trees we have seen birdlife return
and thrive in that area.”
Ihutai also works strategically to
translate objectives into practical
outcomes and leveraging action
from outside the group to support
those objectives.
Dr Doudney said involving and
engaging with the community is a
key part of how the trust works.
The trust has a number of events
which draw citywide volunteers.

Cakes, sandwiches and fruit
dishes that were popular in
New Zealand in the early 1900s
and a variety of pot luck dishes
from different cultures were
served.

A better life after shedding the kilos
• By Matt Slaughter
A HUSBAND and wife of
Somerfield have inspired each
other to lose 69.7kg between
them.
In 2017, at 99.7kg Miriam
McKenzie’s doctor told her she
was pre-diabetic and she decided
to make a change.
Weighing about 115kg her
husband Chris McKenzie decided
he owed it to Miriam and their
kids Clementine and Matilda to
do the same.
They signed up to WW, the
new Weight Watchers, and a
combination of hard work and
persistence have paid off.
In less than 11 months, Miriam
has lost 37.7kg and is no longer
pre-diabetic, while Chris has lost
32kg over a slightly longer period
of time.
Miriam said the secret to
her weight loss was nothing
special.
“It was just introducing a
lot more fruit and veg into the
diet, being more mindful about
portion control, that was a
big thing for me and a lot less
snacking, said Miriam.
“And it was less takeaways.
We would have probably had
takeaways at least once a week,
whereas now definitely that’s an
occasional like hardly ever kind
of thing.”
Miriam said she started
walking about 13,000 to 15,000
steps a day with her best friend
Lucy Arnold.
“We went from me having to
constantly ask her [Lucy] to slow
down to her now having to keep
up with me,” Miriam said.
With every 5kg to 10kg Miriam
lost, she rewarded herself by
buying something nice like
charms for her Pandora bracelet
or new shoes.
Said Chris: “I was seeing the
kids grow up and thinking I
really want to be able to have the
energy, have the health to keep up
with them and of course, seeing
how well Miriam was doing it was
like just a bit of an inspiration to
follow in her footsteps.”
SLIM: Chris and Miriam McKenzie have lost 69.7kg between them.
‘I was seeing the kids grow
up and thinking I really
want to be able to have
the energy’
– Chris McKenzie
“I’m a bit of techno-geek, I just
kind of got the Weight Watchers
app and said, I will follow your
directions, Mr app sir, and it
worked, he said.
Miriam said the things that
drove her to lose the weight she
had were being able to fit into
clothes she loved and inspiring
her children.
“That was actually a big
motivator for me, was to be able
to wear nice clothes again and to
be able to just walk into any shop
and be able to fit clothes. That
really does feel amazing,’’ said
Miriam.
“Obviously, we want to be
healthy for our kids and good role
models for them.”
For others wanting to lose
weight, Miriam has some key
tips.
“It’s about just digging deep
and finding out your reasons
why you want to do it and letting
that drive you and just doing it
for yourself, eating well, moving
more and breaking it down into
those little mini goals, that was
really good for me.”
Said Chris: “She [Miriam] is
just an inspiration and she’s just
amazing.”

WHAT’S ‘HOT’ AT HOUSE OF TRAVEL SHIRLEY
Christmas Greetings to you all!
We hope you have had a wonderful 2019 and have a fantastic festive season.
Christmas is just around the corner, but we
thought we’d give you some ideas for travel
next year.
There are some fantastic destinations you
could travel to over the Christmas period and
for some it may be appealing to get away from
the traditional Kiwi Christmas and experience
something completely different…
Our number 1. recommendation if you are
wanting to travel in December or January is
to book as early as you can. As this time is
considered peak travel so the flights fill up
super-fast.
Here are House of Travel Shirley’s top FIVE
Christmas destinations:
EUROPE CHRISTMAS MARKETS
There are many fantastic Christmas markets all
around Europe in December – these are simply
beautiful and the towns twinkle with fairy tale
festiveness!
We have guided holiday options OR you can
meander down the Rhine or Danube on a river
cruise and visit some markets along the way.
Truly magical.
NEW YORK CITY
New York is a wonderful place to visit anytime
of the year but at Christmas the streets and
store windows are lit up with fantastic lights
and there are wonderful markets and events to
attend. We’d maybe suggest after time in the
Big Apple you head down to the Caribbean
and enjoy a cruise around the islands.
LAPLAND
A real winter wonderland and of course home
to the Big Man himself – Santa! Lapland is
dark at this time of the year so a fabulous
unique experience where you can see
reindeer and do a dog sleigh ride. You can
even stay in a hotel made entirely of snow
and ice.
THE ROCKIES, CANADA
Enjoy a white Christmas on the Snow Train
through the Rocky Mountains, finish up in Banff,
pop on some skis and hit the slopes OR if that’s
not your thing sit back and sip some mulled
wine and enjoy resort life.
ICELAND
Reykjavik shines on the streets and in the sky
in December. Lots of twinkling lights illuminate
the city and on the clear nights you may witness
the stunning Northern Lights in the sky.
SO, FROM OUR TEAM TO YOUR FAMILIES WE’D LIKE TO WISH YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Medal haul for boxers
HEALTHY: Sue Turner shows off All Right’s new card game,
which encourages kids to talk about their emotions.
Game to benefit mental health
THE ALL Right campaign is
launching a new resource to help
kids identify and manage their
emotions.
The Chitter Chatter card game
is now available at Christchurch
libraries and is designed to get
families together and talking
about emotions, empathy and
managing worries.
Each pack of the card game,
designed for 5-12-year-olds,
contains 40 challenges that can
be applied to one of 14 emotions.
Chitter Chatter scenarios include
explaining an emotion to an alien,
imagining a world where a certain
feeling doesn’t exist and acting
out emotions in slow motion.
All Right manager Sue Turner
said Chitter Chatter helps make
it normal and fun for families to
talk about emotions.
“Talking about how we’re feeling,
recognising a wide range of
emotions and learning how to
work with them all help us build
resilience and live more enjoyable
lives.
“As parents, we all have good
intentions to spend meaningful
time with our kids, but we don’t
always have a lot of time. Playing
Chitter Chatter for as little as five
minutes a week is a small thing
that can make a big difference,”
said Ms Turner.
Chitter Chatter packs
can be picked up for free at
Christchurch libraries for a
limited time, or ordered from
anywhere in New Zealand for a
small cost at www.allright.org.

COMPETITIVE: The Woolston Boxing Club came away with a
gold and three silver medals at the Southland championships
at Gore.
SPORT
THE WOOLSTON Boxing Club
have ended their 2019 campaign
with one gold and three silver
medals at the Southland
championships in Gore.
National champion Ryley
Sutherland won gold in the
under-52kg cadet class to cap a
big year.
Philippa White in the under-
80kg elite, James Stokes in the
under-81kg novice and Trevor
Swainson in the elite 91kg
and over class all finished as
runners-up.
Sutherland’s performance
earned him star of the tournament
honours while Swainson
was named legend of the tournament,
Coach Holly Sullivan said the
team had a mix of youth and
experience.
“Ryley had a great fight and
had to really work for the win,”
she said. “He’s a very tall, lean
boxer but he is able to shortenup
his punches well and he used
the little bit of extra experience
to get the win.”
Sullivan said Swainson was
unlucky not to win on points
after he stepped-up two weight
classes to take a fight.
“Trev always loses the
first round, every time,” she
said.
“But I felt he did enough to
win the second and was dominant
in the third round.
“The judges didn’t see it that
way and that’s boxing.”
Stokes returned for his first
fight since a fractured eye socket
in March.
“He loves the sport and is
keen to give it a go but he is
inexperienced and just needs
ring-time.
White was fighting in her
home town but was not able to
get the win.
“I was really impressed with
her fitness levels and it was a
bout that could have gone either
way,” Sullivan said.
The boxers will now have
a strength and conditioning
regime over the next two
months before the competitions
begin again in February.

Deck the halls
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a decoration or two around the home.
Whether its outdoor lights with a waving Santa or
just draping tinsel across your mantelpiece, there are
many ways to celebrate the festive season in your home.
Go natural
Driftwood painted white with LED lights wrapped
around, or pine cones with a touch of silver spray
paint, make beautiful natural additions to the home
at this time of year. If you have a tree branch around
the home, why not cut it up into discs and spray paint
white stars and reindeer on the disc. Drill a hole in the
top and thread some gardeners string through the hole
and you have an instant decoration to hang on the tree
or somewhere around the home. Cover polystyrene
balls in ripped linen, hessian and cotton strips. These
can either be hung up or a number placed in a bowl on
the table.
Tinsel town
Many love the glitter and sparkle that tinsel brings
but how about using it in different ways. A threetiered
cake plate with tinsel laid on each plate with
baubles then placed on top, can look really impressive
as a centrepiece for the table. Make your own wreath
by wrapping tinsel around and around a polystyrene
circle. Hang just as it is, or hot glue gun baubles on to
create extra wow.
Table setting
Sometimes the simplest decorations on the table
can look the most stunning. A beautiful napkin rolled
up with a piece of red and white ribbon, or rosemary
wreath looks amazing. Why not place a hessian runner
down the middle of the table and add greenery and
candles in jars on top to create a wonderful centrepiece.
If you have a children’s eating table, why not put a
long piece of brown paper as a table cloth. Draw large
circles where the plates can go and write Christmas
questions beside each plate outline. A little bottle with
a red and white paper straw is great too. Put a jar of
red and green crayons on the table. When the kids are
finished their dinner, they can play noughts and crosses
or hangman or just draw pictures.
If you’re looking for ideas why not check out

technique to make sure your home looks like a
Christmas wonderland this festive season.

LANDMARK DENTAL CENTRE
OFFERS BROAD
SPECTRUM OF SERVICES
For over 20 years Palms Dental Centre has been a
landmark in the Shirley community.
Their experienced practitioners offer a broad spectrum
of dental services and with six dentists and an oral health
therapist there is certainly scope to choose your favourite.
Services range from simple dental check-ups right through
to advanced dental treatment plans, such as orthodontics,
implants, complete dental rehabilitation and intravenous
sedation.
The centre underwent extensive renovations in 2016/2017,
which included the upgrading of all their surgeries and
equipment ensuring they not only keep abreast of standards
and quality of care, but are well in excess of requirements.
The surgeries are light and welcoming for patients that feel
anxious at the dentist, and are equipped with high-quality
equipment and materials. All the Palms Dental Centre’s
suppliers and laboratory technicians are sourced locally,
supporting Christchurch and New Zealand. They do not
import products from overseas, which they consider to be
inferior.
For the convenience of their patients, they have several late
nights. Opening hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
8.30am-8.30pm, Wednesday 8.30am-7pm, Friday 8.30am-
6pm, and Saturday 9am-5pm by appointment.
Standard dental treatment is free for under 18 year-olds,
and they also offer ACC consultations.
Palms Dental Centre is located at 25 Marshland Road,
Shirley, with off-street parking available.
The team at the Palms Dental Centre strongly support
recovery in the “East” of Christchurch. They have been
there with the community through it all, providing expert,
caring dental services. To book an appointment phone 385

One of the homes built by Enterprise Homes in Kingsbridge Estates.
STYLISH HOMES ON
GENEROUS SECTIONS IN
EAST CHRISTCHURCH
For nearly seven decades, Enterprise Homes Ltd has been
providing Canterbury families with high-quality, brand-new
homes and property.
Established in 1951 by builder Ian Renwick as Renwick
Construction, it started trading as Enterprise Homes Ltd
in 1972, and is the longest-established residential building
company active in Canterbury today.
The business’s key focus is on designing, building and
delivering high-quality, completed house and land packages
to Canterbury homeowners within their own subdivisions.
“Enterprise Homes has gained a solid reputation for the
quality of our workmanship and the delivery of our aftersales
service should any remedial work be required. This
is reflected in our annual sales with no less than 30 per
cent of our orders coming from repeat clients or client
referrals,” general manager Rob Sloan says.
“Enterprise Homes takes a well-measured and organised
26 weeks to complete their homes, whereas many housing
companies try to get homes built in 18 weeks, or under in
many cases.”
Kingsbridge Estates is one of several successful
developments that Enterprise Homes has delivered for the
families and communities of east Christchurch.
Located in Burwood, and running parallel with QEII Drive
with entry off Vivian Street, Kingsbridge Estates is a very
special residential development that offers high-quality,
well-appointed homes on generous sections, seldom seen in
today’s subdivisions, Rob says.
“Homes in this subdivision are highly sought after as they
are in zone for the new Shirley Boys and Avonside Girls
High School. This subdivision is also in zone for the everpopular
Waitakiri School.”
This is what Kingsbridge resident Daniel has to say:
“Excellent price point for the area and quality of the
property and its finishes. Far superior subdivision to any
others with cookie-cutter style homes with row after row
of the same style homes and colour schemes. Each home
has a unique layout and style, which brings great character
to the community.
Providing well-priced homes that are accessible to workingclass
families that are looking to do one better than buying
a second-hand property. Most developers in the same
bracket do not fit out their properties with the likes of
Fisher and Paykel appliances and PDL Electrical fittings. The
stone bench tops, Dominator garage door opener, alarm
system and Daiken heat pump also make it feel like a cut
above the ‘other’ developers, who are only trying to cut
the most cost out of a build to make the highest revenue
possible. Buying our Enterprise home is one of the best
decisions we have ever made!”
So, for more information on Kingsbridge Estates call 348

Christmas celebrations at Eastgate will kick off with an exciting Santa
procession on Saturday, December 7.
The jolly man in red will travel from Bromley Park down Buckleys Rd
to Eastgate on a three-wheeler trike, with his fairies and elves accompanying
him on more trikes – seven altogether. Police car and a fire
engine will also be part of the procession, which starts at 9.55am,
arriving at Eastgate at10am.
The fun for the whole family will carry on from there, with bouncy
castles in the Eastgate car park from 10am-12pm, lollipop giveaways,

From December 7 right through until Christmas Eve, Santa will be
there every day from 10am-4pm, and from 5pm-7pm on late nights,
so the children can talk to him about what they would like for Christmas,
and have their photo taken with him.
Also on the three late nights leading up to Christmas, from 7pm-8pm,
customers are invited to bring along their pets for a photo with Santa.
On December 17, 18 and 19, Eastgate will provide a special Sensitive
Santa hour from 8am-9am, when the atmosphere will be quiet and
peaceful to cater for children sensitive to light and noise to have their

CELEBRATING 21 YEARS
Robyn and Peter Thew are celebrating
owning Burwood Pharmacy for 20 years
this month. We have survived in the middle
of the community, without a medical
practice next door, by constantly improving
our services and trying new ideas. We
know most of our customers by name and
provide personal and confidential service.
As owner operators we can tailor ourselves
to the needs of local community.
Robyn has been qualified as a pharmacist
for the past 33 years and has experience
working in hospital and community
pharmacy, both here and in the UK. She
has also completed a master’s in clinical
pharmacy degree. Burwood Pharmacy
provides a full range of pharmacy services
including dispensing prescriptions, providing
medico blister packs, medicine use reviews,
smoking cessation, diet advice (especially
for diabetics) as well as stocking a wide
range of pharmacy medicines.
We also have an extensive range of amazing
gifts, jewellery, scarves and homeware.
There is something here for everyone, even
Christmas decorations, lights and candles.
We also take passport photos and can
organize your dry cleaning for you. There is
plenty of parking just outside the pharmacy.
For those last-minute gifts, pop in and we
can have them beautifully wrapped and
ready to go for no extra charge. Our loyalty
card programme is a draw card, as for every
$300 you spend in store you can earn a
$20 gift voucher (equates to 6% discount).
Customers are keen to use these vouchers
on something special for themselves, often a
lovely scarf.
When extending our shop in 2010 we
were hit by the earthquakes, but we have
carried on and still enjoy being part of the
Burwood Community. We welcome you
to come and visit Burwood Pharmacy for
professional and friendly pharmacy advice in
a relaxed atmosphere.

Business owners Peter and Helen Joe have been running
Gourmet Seafoods for more than two decades, and over
that time have continually developed their selection to
meet their customers’ diverse and changing needs.
“We cater for a lot of different tastes and requirements
as people from different cultures have come into our

As well as the traditional and ever-popular standard fish and
chips, Gourmet Seafoods offers a selection of specialty fish
such as gurnard, tarakihi, sole and blue cod, which can be
crumbed or battered. The seafood selection includes fresh
and cooked Bluff oysters in season, Pacific oysters, scallops
and mussels.
For entrée items there are mini spring rolls and corn
nuggets, while other tasty options include souvlakis, filled

signature item, crispy, crunchy batter for fish and chicken, is
the choice of many happy customers.
Gourmet Seafoods’ chips are hand-made and freshly
cooked every day, and in fact Gourmet Seafoods was
recently chosen as the regional winner of the New Zealand

MORE THAN JUST
A DANCE SCHOOL
The Patricia Paul School of Dance has been
providing excellence in dance education in
Christchurch for over 20 years, with venues
in Fendalton, Thorrington, Harewood and
North New Brighton.
The syllabus followed for ballet is the
Royal Academy of Dance (R.A.D.) and for
jazz, contemporary and hip hop it is The
New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance
(N.Z.A.M.D.).
The school has had many successful
students that have gone on to careers
in dance and theatre including: Marysa
Dalton, Royal NZ Ballet, Sacha Copeland, a
contemporary dancer and choreographer,
Kase Craig, who was accepted into the
prestigious Australian Ballet School in
Melbourne at the age of 15 and is now a
professional dancer in the Ballet de L’Opera
National de Bordeaux in France, and the
international singing star Hayley Westenra.
The school’s goal is to be more than just
a dance school. They are passionate about
educating their students mentally as well
as physically to build their self-esteem and
confidence.
The classes Patricia offers are for children
from three years old, with pre-school ballet
designed to nurture a child’s interest in
movement and expression, and jazz and
tumble classes for children from seven years
old. Goal-setting is also good for them so
exams are offered to students over the age
of seven, if they wish to do them, Patricia
says.
There will be a free introductory dance
class in February 2020 before the first term
starts, to see if your child enjoys it.

SPECIAL SANTA SESSIONS FOR
SENSITIVE CHILDREN
AT THE PALMS
For the fourth year running, the Palms
Shopping Centre is again offering Sensitive
Santa sessions leading up to Christmas.
These sessions are aimed at children with
sensory processing disorders such as autism,
for whom background music and noise, and
bright lighting can be extremely unsettling,
says marketing manager Hayley Earle.
Sensitive Santa sessions are designed
to combat this by eliminating the chaos
and sensory overload that would usually
overwhelm those children in a shopping
centre setting, providing a calm and quiet
alternative to the traditional Santa visit.
“ It’s soothing for the children, instead of
overpowering the senses,” Hayley says.
The sessions take place before the centre
opens to the public to eliminate crowds and
allow for a quiet, controlled environment.
Families are scheduled one at a time to be
able to enjoy their experience with Santa
one on one, without having to wait in
queues.
Hayley says that according to Autism New
Zealand, autism spectrum disorder touches
the lives of more than 40,000 people and
their families in New Zealand, making it four
times more common than cerebral palsy
and 17 times more common than Down
syndrome.
Sensitive Santa sessions run on Saturday
December 7 & 14 from 7am to 9am, and
on Sunday December 8 & 15 from 8am
to10am.
Sessions are available by appointment. To
book a session, call the Palms Shopping
Centre (03) 385 3067 or visit the customer
service kiosk inside the centre.

A LIFELONG LOVE
OF THE EAST
Born and raised in the eastern suburbs, Harcourts Gold
real estate agent Debbie Gordon has had a lifelong
passion for this unique area of Christchurch, which has
underpinned her long career in the real estate industry.
“Ninety per cent of my work is in the east,” Debbie says.
“I love the location with its many wonderful recreational
assets. There’s the beaches, surfing and surf lifesaving,
rowing and kayaking on the Avon river, cycling, mountain
biking, running and walking through Bottle Lake Forest,
a few golf courses, Taiora QE11, gymnasium and the new
salt pools currently in construction – the east is certainly
an adventure playground.”
Debbie believes the most important aspect of selling
residential real estate is providing service for clients and
says it is a key focus of her business. Continual repeat
business and referrals are a true testament to the hard
work and dedication she provides for all her clients at
Harcourts Gold New Brighton.
“I don’t take on too many listings at one time, and
sometimes I will ask people to wait before they list so I
can give them 110 per cent of my time and effort. I always
get good prices for peoples’ homes, and no matter what
price the property is selling for – whether it’s $200,000 or
$700,000, everybody gets the same level of service.”
For nine years, Debbie’s daughter Kerrin has worked as
her PA, and then 12 months ago Kerrin herself became a
fully licensed real estate agent. The mother and daughter
team now work alongside each other, with Kerrin helping
the buyers and Debbie looking after the sellers.
“Kerrin is doing very well and getting good testimonials
from clients,” Debbie says. “It’s really wonderful to see
that, and to have her working with me.”
Debbie is also a strong supporter of the local community.
She sponsors the New Brighton Bowling Club, along with
the local RSA. She also supported the Cancer Society’s
recent appeal by shaving off her hair and raising $3600 for
them.
So, if you need some advice or are thinking about selling
your property, contact Debbie on 0274 373 925 or Kerrin
on 021 069 5950 or email debbie.gordon@harcourtsgold.
co.nz. They will be very happy to help.
Here’s what clients have to say:
“Debbie goes over and beyond with her service, she is

PEGASUS POST
Eastside
Strategically positioned in the heart of Parklands, and the New Brighton commercial
district, our two eastside Harcourts Gold offices operate with a medium sized
team of highly dedicated, experienced sales consultants who have all lived and
worked in the local community for a number of years. Our consultants are available
and committed to assisting not only their immediate neighbourhood and the
surrounding suburbs, but the wider area of Christchurch also.
The eastside team has developed an
extraordinary track record of dealing with every
scenario possible when it comes to selling
property post the Christchurch quakes. We
have the knowledge, expertise, and the energy
to achieve top results, and to assist our clients
in moving forward with any real estate matters.
There is no challenge too great nor too small!
In particular, we pride ourselves on having
extensive knowledge in selling ‘As Is, Where Is’,
uninsured properties, to date having sold in
excess of 400, and have been hugely successful
in then giving our clients the ability to reach a
positive result with the sale of their damaged
home, and provide an opportunity to move
forward with their lives. Much of the value and
esteem the community attributes to the team
relates back to the support, encouragement
and assistance they delivered after the
sequence of earthquakes. Both our offices
have continued to act as a beacon for locals
requiring clarity when dealing with complex
property and real estate matters.
We are passionate about helping and being
part of the local community and already
support numerous organisations locally – some
through volunteering, newsletters, printing –
and through our Harcourts Foundation through
which we are able to apply for funding to assist
clubs or community groups.
Supported by a marketing division, customer
service department, and a number of talented
administrative staff within the Harcourts Gold
franchise, we would welcome the opportunity
to offer advice regarding the purchase, sale, or
rental management of any property.
Should you be thinking of making a career
change in 2019, we are always looking for some
fresh faces to join our team. Whether you are
an established agent looking for a fresh start,
or new to the industry, Harcourts gold is a great
company to work with, offering a supportive
environment, and an active mentoring
programme. Our eastside offices based at
Harcourts Gold Parklands office in Parklands Mall
Harcourts Gold New Brighton office in New Brighton Mall
Parklands and New Brighton are very much
community based, and our agents of varied
experience, share the same passion for people
and property. Should a vocation in real estate
be of interest to you, please feel free to give
Nikila a call on 027 5175 645.
It’s our privilege and pleasure to sell your
home for the best price possible, utilising our
knowledge and proven marketing skills.
Be assured that in selecting any of our
consultants, you will get superior support
and the entire teams’ goodwill and expertise.

HEALTH & AWARENESS
Treatment offered for
headaches, facial and jaw pain
PEGASUS POST
The red areas are
the areas you feel
the pain, The black
crosses are the muscle
knots that cause the
pain in the red areas.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio, located in Colombo Street
Sydenham, focuses both on helping people stay physically fit and
healthy, and helping people to overcome various health problems.
As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk
explains, when our muscles tighten this
can refer pain to many of these areas
around the face and head. Dehydration
can be the catalyst for tightening the neck
muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the
ear, forehead and round the eye and jaw
joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis
muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which
can be confusing when the person visits
the dentist to have it seen to and the dentist
can’t find a reason for the recurring pain.
Teeth grinding at night and teeth
clenching during the day are also a major
cause of muscle tightening.
Physiotherapy treatment for these
problems is based on deactivating the
‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage
therapy to relax the muscles, which is the
least invasive and a very effective form
of treatment. Dry needling is another
technique used for muscle relaxation,
but is only used with the client’s consent,
Ietje says.
“We release the muscles to give
immediate relief, and at the same time
work on the cause. For example, we have
a feedback headband that is worn at night
to help people to learn not to clench their
teeth while they’re asleep. We also work
on the client’s cervical or neck part of the
spine, where overuse can cause muscles to
tighten, creating pain.”
Teaching self-management of stress
is an important aspect of the clinic’s
treatment as well as teaching breathing
techniques, which go hand in hand with
managing stress.
See us for headaches,
facial or jaw pain before
February, mention this
article and save $45.00
on your first treatment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample
parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz

The secrets out!
snoring
Why put up with broken sleep, when
help is at hand with Snorex, an appliance
that prevents snoring, sleep apnoea, and
dry and raw throats.
Snorex is custom-fitted to your mouth
for comfort, and a follow up service is
provided.
Denise Lim has been involved with
Snores for 22 years and has had a 98%
success rate with
people using the
appliance. Snoring
can be a health
hazard, causing
sleep apnoea, where
the person actually
stops breathing for
short periods.
It can cause
short-term memory
loss, tiredness and
contribute to high
blood pressure.
The Snorex
device does not feel
restrictive, is noninvasive
and carries
a money-back
guarantee.
Many people are referred by ear, nose
and throat specialists, however, anyone can
phone for an appointment.
For an information pack or to discuss
the Snorex further, phone Denise Lim on

REAL ESTATE
Spirited living: A blend of old and new
3 Cranmer Square (25 Armagh Street) Christchurch
Auction: Thursday 19 December 2019, unless sold prior
4 bedrooms | 4 bathrooms | 3 living rooms | 2 dining rooms | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | 2 off-street carparks | Listing PI62576
This utterly unique home takes an iconic
piece of local history, adds a remarkable
contemporary dwelling alongside and wraps
them together with loving care - and clever
interior design - all in a sensational innercity
location. Enjoying a leafy outlook across
Cranmer Square, it’s just a four-minute stroll
to Hagley Park, 6 minutes to Victoria Street
or 11 minutes to Riverside Market and
the heart of the city. Zoning for Elmwood
School, Heaton, Boys’ High and Girls’ High,
as well as proximity to private schools,
ensures this is also a practical family home.
Incorporating the heritage-listed
Cranmer Bridge Club building, designed
by Samuel Hurst Seager, the owners
embarked on an ambitious four-year
project to design and build a new home
on the site (a process featured on Grand
Designs NZ). A spectacular soaring atrium
combines old and new, pulling light into
the home and drawing guests upstairs to
the contemporary living space. A black
interior offsets the warmth of timber and
frames glimpses of the world beyond
through carefully placed windows. Openplan
living and dining flows to the kitchen
and breakfast room - a visual feast of
cathedral ceilings, rich textures and cleverly
placed lighting (both natural and electric).
A sheltered terrace invites outdoor living
and a separate media room and bedroom
(utilised as an office) complete this level.
Downstairs, the master suite includes a
WIR and private bathroom, and there’s
a second bedroom and bathroom, large
workshop/utility space and double internalaccess
garage. In the old timber building,
original details are lovingly restored and
the space has been repurposed as a selfcontained
space with studio bedroom,
separate lounge, kitchenette and bathroom.
This is your opportunity to own a truly
iconic piece of Christchurch.
