Last week’s Hakatere
Festival was once again a
rich display of colour and
culture from schools
around the district.
The annual school
celebration was heldat
Ashburton Trust Event
Centre and featured a
busy line up of
performing groups.
This year eight kapa
haka groups (Allenton,
Dorie, Netherby, St
Joseph’s, Hampstead,
Intermediate, Ashburton
College and Borough), a
Pasifika group from
Netherby School,
multicultural group from
Allenton School and
Filipino Group from
Ashburton Christian
School performed.
The Hakatere
Cultural festival provides
an opportunity for
school groups to perform
and celebrate the
cultures within schools
without acompetition
focus.
Rowers gather
Rowers from around
Canterbury took over
Lake Hood at the
weekend for Ashburton
Rowing Club’s annual
two day regatta.
Rowers taking part
came from anumber of
schools in the
Christchurch and Timaru
areas.
Events were raced over
a2km course and some
local novice rowers also
teamed up with more
experienced rowers for
some events.
As well as singles,
doubles and quads, there
were also races for eights.
Saturday’s rowing
programme ran to
schedule, but strong
winds on Sunday
morning cut racing short,
with only aquarter of
races completed.

laned races and finished
boats and staring parts
returning or heading out
from rowing sites along
the shoreline.
Pool set to open
The Tinwald pool will
officially open for the
season on Saturday
December 7, after urgent
repairs are made to the
pool fibreglass.
Ashburton council has
discovered cracks in the
pool which would cause
significant water leaks,
and work to fix the leaks
will delay the opening
date by one week. The
council had initially planned
to open the pool on
November 30.
Council service delivery
group manager Neil
McCann said the damage
was discovered while
preparing the pool for
the upcoming season.
‘‘The ground underneath
the pool appearsto
have moved, causing the
fibreglass to crack.
‘‘We’re working
quickly to fix the damage
properly, not only to
ensure the pool is ready
for the busy summer
months ahead but also to
protect the longevity of
the facility for many more
years to come.
‘‘The Tinwald pool is
one of the top destinations
to cool off over
summer in Ashburton
and we want to make sure
visitors get to experience
another great season in
the popular outdoor
pool.’’
The Tinwald pool will
be open over the summer
period until March 1.
