CAMPING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

South Australia is a State of contrasts and surprises. There are 11

distinct regions to explore, encompassing everything from rugged

coasts to sandy swimming beaches, wine country, the mighty

Murray River and the awesome Outback. Choose one region to

suit the season or indulge in an extended drive holiday across the

State for a mix of relaxation, adventure and discovery.

Anyone with a passion for nature and wildlife is particularly well

catered for. The State features vast expanses of untouched

beaches and wilderness with some stunning national and

conservation parks along the way.

South Australia’s popularity as a travel destination also has a lot

to do with good living. Fresh, quality food, award winning wines,

vibrant arts festivals and major national and international

sporting events are part of the locals’ lifestyle.

Eat and drink your way around world famous wine regions

such as the Barossa and Clare Valley, visit Adelaide’s vibrant

Central Market or relax on one of the city’s many multicultural

café strips.

Many parks in South Australia will welcome your pet if you plan to bring it on

holiday. You can easily check which caravan parks accepts pets by seeing the

Pet Friendly Park symbol on the park listings throughout this magazine.

What does this symbol mean? Some important

things to remember when travelling with your pet:

• Always ring ahead to check your pet will be welcome. Caravan

parks that take pets will have conditions. This may mean they only

accept certain animals, or they may not take pets during peak periods.

• Pets will generally be accepted on sites and in your accommodation.

They will usually not be allowed in cabins or in amenities areas.

• Some caravan parks now offer pet friendly Cabin Accommodation

options. Those parks that offer this facility will state this in their listing.

• When contacting the park, always talk to park managers about pet

rules and if there are any pet friendly common areas in the park. Some

parks are finding spaces to allow pet owners and their pets to move off

their site and socialise with others.

• Pets will not enjoy their holiday if left unattended, so if you are leaving

the park, always take your pet with you.

• Remember to keep your pet on a leash at all times and to clean up any

mess left by your pet immediately.

• Barking dogs can be a nuisance and detract from people's enjoyment,

please keep your dog quiet when staying in a caravan park.

• Please be aware that other people in the park are also on holiday, keep

the impact of your pet to a minimum so that it does not detract from

other people's enjoyment.

• Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, and Assistance Dogs are allowed different

conditions to pets. Owners of such dogs are also advised to ring

ahead and check with the caravan park.

CHECKLIST

FOR A TROUBLE

FREE HOLIDAY

A trouble-free holiday is a joy – but nothing will spoil your

holiday mood more than a mechanical mishap that could have

been prevented. Listed below is a basic checklist. It’s wise to

develop your own, which is specific to your van. Put it on your

phone or print it out and laminate it so you can use it again and

again in any conditions. It certainly makes your pre-trip “to do”

tasks a lot easier. At the end of this page is a list of companies

that can assist you. You should consult the experts when you are

still ‘new to the game’ or if issues such as stability are a concern.

From time to time, even if you are an ‘old hand’, getting a

complete check of the mechanical condition of your van is a

wise investment.

CARAVAN INTERIOR

Check the functionality of all critical internal features, including

the fridge, cooktop, water pump, air conditioner and toilet.

Cupboards and drawers closed and table secured

Refrigerator door locked - check that containers with liquids

are sealed Hatches and windows closed No loose items in

cupboards or on shelves Fire extinguisher fitted First aid kit

CARAVAN EXTERIOR

How long since your gas cylinders and LPG regulators were

checked? Ensure your gas cylinders are completely off and well

secured before driving Is it time to flush out water tanks and

check for mould? Water tank filled How are your brakes?

Make sure you do a small test drive before your big trip and leave

time for remedial work if required Wheel bearings adjusted

Wheel nuts tight Check the condition of your tyres,

including spares, and that the tyre pressure matches your load

If you have changed tyres yourself, always remember to

retighten the nuts once the van is completely back on the ground

Does your handbrake need adjustment? What is the status of

safety chains and the jockey wheel?

Note: It is advisable to have the caravan serviced by a specialist

prior to the journey.

RIVER TORRENS LINEAR PARK

Ideal for families, the Linear Park runs

through the city all the way between the

Mt Lofty Ranges and the coastal suburb of

Henley Beach. You can start from

anywhere along the trail and the

picturesque river bank reveals its

different landscapes along the way.

ENCOUNTER BIKEWAY FLEURIEU

PENINSULA

This cycling trail follows the coastline to

link the towns of Victor Harbor, Port Elliot,

Middleton and Goolwa. Pick up part of the

ride from any of the 4 towns along the way.

A flat ride it is suitable for all ages and

fitness levels.

RIESLING TRAIL CLARE VALLEY

27km trail running along an old railway

line. This trail takes in farmland, vineyards

and wooded areas with options for cellar

door stops along the way, this easy pace

trail stretches from Auburn to Barinia.

COAST TO VINES RAIL TRAIL

This trail starts at the seaside suburb of

Marino in Adelaide and follows the former

rail corridor to the Willunga township.

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail,

Mouth of Rocky River

WALKING

There are hundreds of great walking trails in South Australia.

Walking can bring you close to nature and is an ideal form of seeing

the sights while also getting some exercise. There are walks in

national parks, heritage walks and coastal walks.

HEYSEN TRAIL - One of the world's great walking trails this 1200km

trail starts at Cape Jervis on Fleurieu Peninsula and winds its way

through many regions of the state with its end point in Parachilna

Gorge in the Flinders Ranges. The Trail has been designed to cater

for both the serious backpacker and for the day walker who might

choose to do short walks along different sections.

WATERFALL GULLY TO MT LOFTY ADELAIDE - Just 2km the walk

ascends from the Adelaide Plains to the Mt Lofty Ranges. Due to

the fact that it climbs 475m from bottom to top it is loved by

fitness fanatics. It is one of Adelaide’s most beautiful metropolitan

walks traversing through eucalypt forest and with fantastic views

over the city of Adelaide.

WALK THE YORKE, YORKE PENINSULA - This is a 500km trail that

traces the entire coastline of the Yorke Peninsula revealing cliffs,

beaches and scenery. The trail skirts mangroves, grain paddocks,

seaside towns and untouched beaches. Pick up the walk at any spot

WILDERNESS TRAIL, KANGAROO ISLAND - This 61km trail starts

inside Flinders Chase National Park and traverses pristine beaches,

cliff tops and popular KI attractions such as Remarkable Rocks

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to

off-road adventures in South Australia.

More tracks have opened to cater for the

growing popularity of 4WD holidays, with

options for either self-drive or joining a

4WD tour. This article highlights just a small

selection of the many self-drive options,

most of which will get you into sites and

scenes that the average tourist will never

get to see. Some are free and some are not,

some are easy to drive, and some are not,

so make sure you do your homework before

heading out.

BEFORE YOU GO…

• If you’re a beginner, consider 4WD

training before you set off, or join a “Tag

Along” tour to learn the ins and outs in

varying terrain.

• Know your vehicle and your limits. Deflate

your tyres and have the necessary

equipment and knowledge in case of an

accident or emergency.

• Conditions can vary considerably on 4WD

tracks and are influenced by seasonality

and weather. Obtain current track

information from the local visitor

information centre before heading off.

• Give way. Australian road rules apply on

4WD tracks & beaches. Vehicles must be

roadworthy and registered. Wear a

seatbelt, drive at appropriate speed and

don’t drink and drive.

• Stay on defined tracks and “tread lightly"

in these pristine environments. Don’t

trespass onto private property.

• Leave only tyre tracks & footprints. Take

all your refuse back to designated rubbish

deposits.

• Always let someone know where you are

going and your expected arrival time.

A TASTE OF SOME EASY TRACKS AND

PICTURESQUE SPOTS

For more simple driving pleasures, consider

driving on one of South Australia’s beautiful

beaches.

Close to Adelaide there’s Sellicks Beach and

Silver Sands (it’s easy driving, which is

accessible by 2WD, too). A bit further afield,

Long Beach at Robe is another entry-level

favourite as is North Beach at Wallaroo on

Yorke Peninsula.

There are also several drives that are a step

up, including Fleurieu Peninsula’s drive from

Goolwa Beach to mouth of the Murray River,

Emu Bay on Kangaroo Island and Coffin Bay

National Park and Shelly Beach on Eyre

Peninsula.

to 4WD. West of Minlaton is Parsons Beach

where access to the beach is only suitable

only is between Flaherty’s Beach and Point

Turton.

Belair National Park

Set in beautiful natural bushland, Belair

National Park is just 25 minutes from

Adelaide city centre. It’s South Australia’s

oldest national park and has woodlands and

lakes to explore via walking and mountain

biking trails. It is home to Old Government

House, a significant heritage building.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges

National Park

Known as Ikara to the Adnyamathanha

people, this ancient and rugged landscape

is one of South Australia’s most iconic

destinations. Visit from April to October

when the temperatures are cooler to make

the most of the extensive bushwalking and

camping experiences.

Flinders Chase

National Park

This park’s coastal scenery includes

Admirals Arch, a beautiful natural rock arch

shaped by the powerful Southern Ocean,

and the sculptured granite boulders known

as Remarkable Rocks. Other attractions

include wild beaches, the unspoilt Rocky

River, vast wilderness areas and cultural

heritage sites – including two lighthouses.

The majority of the park is accessible by

2WD, so it’s perfect for day visits and an

ideal place to view wildlife in its natural

habitat.

Innes National Park

The rugged coast of Innes National Park

offers plenty of white sandy coves nestled

amongst cliffs to explore and is a paradise

for beach-lovers during spring and summer.

Anglers can fish for salmon from the shore

at Browns Beach, or try for mullet, tommy

ruffs, squid or even snook and snapper

from Stenhouse Bay jetty.

Naracoorte Caves

These World Heritage listed caves are one

of the world’s most important fossil sites.

For half a million years the caves acted as

pitfall traps and predator dens, bones

collected – layer upon layer, year after year

– creating a rich fossil record of the ancient

animals. With the caves staying at a

constant 17 degrees centigrade, Naracoorte

Caves is a destination for all seasons. Selfguided,

guided and adventure caving tours

are available year-round.

Come and play outdoors. Whether it’s

paddling or water skiing, cycling or walking,

racing cars or four-wheel-driving… this

region has it all.

Famous for iconic houseboat holidays and paddle steamer history, but

there’s more on offer. The waterways begin in the lower Murray near

Swan Reach. This stretch boasts some of the River’s widest expanses

and most spectacular ochre cliff faces. From here follow the Mighty

Murray Way towards Mannum and Murray Bridge. With large riverfront

recreation areas and restaurants, these towns are perfect for soaking

up river life. Float south towards the Lower Lakes, Murray Mouth and

Coorong – one of the most unique environments in the world – made

famous again by the 2019 film remake of Storm Boy.

Along the way, you’ll go through Tailem Bend, now firmly on the

map thanks to The Bend Motorsport Park. Further south, you’ll

start catching glimpses of Lake’s Albert and Alexandrina, as they

begin to open up to the Coorong National Park. The laid-back town

of Meningie set right on Lake Albert is known for spectacular

sunsets and fresh seafood. On the other side of the Coorong, you

can travel through Lake Alexandrina towns (such as Milang and

Langhorne Creek) on your way to Goolwa, this is where the River

Murray meets the sea.

walking, riding, drive and canoe trails, the Riverland will help you
