FRESH
Snow
No matter how inconvenient accumulating snow fall is, I still love it!
There is hardly anything like waking up to freshly fallen snow
that blankets yards, sidewalks and streets before anyone has
a chance to put tracks in them. It feels clean and pure – even
the crisp air brings a sense of exhilaration.
Every time we turn the page of the calendar from December
to January, I feel like there is a new beginning in front of me.
A chance to start out fresh to make another run at my goals
in life and ministry. I have to confess that I used to fill out my
ACMR as quickly as possible so that we could see where we
had been (tracks in the snow?) and map out strategies for
making improvements in outreach and discipleship. (Actually
– those strategies had been in process since October’s annual
personal planning retreat and November’s annual calendar
meeting.) I love Christopher Wright’s statement that “the God
revealed in the Scriptures is personal, purposeful and
goal-orientated.” 1 I resonate with that description of God!
A lot of my reading is (of necessity) focused on the Missio
Dei, which is Latin for the “mission of God.” Whatever we are
about as a church – whatever drives us to have meetings and
exist as a church and fellowship – the centerpiece revolves
around God’s mission. If I understand God’s mission correctly,
it could be stated as God redeeming His creation to its
original state. I understand that this is oversimplified (entire
books are written to describe God’s mission and its scope).
We look back with gratitude for what the Lord has done in
us, and we look forward with anticipation to what the Lord
is yet to do through us. January will soon be here – and by
the grace of God, we will leave our “tracks” in our church,
community and world.
At our THRIVE Conference this past fall, we drilled down into
the five ministry gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11. How do these
ministry gifts look in a local church context? How do they
function in the 21st century? If we conclude that the five-fold
ministry gifts are all about titles and hierarchy, I think that
we’ve missed the point of Ephesians 4 entirely. But if they are
about effectively functioning to carry out God’s mission in the
world, then maybe these five ministry gifts have an application
that is not only needed, but essential, in our world and
through the church today. As we move into the new year, it is
my prayer for our churches that we will stay on mission, and
that we will fully utilize ALL of the gifts in their correct biblical
context to see God’s mission forward.
There’s fresh snow out there; let’s make sure to leave our tracks –
make our mark – for the gospel in our communities.
• IN MEMORIAM •
Harold Crosby
(September 29, 1916 — October 20, 2019)
Written by: Don Immel, PennDel Ministry Network Superintendent
I
always enjoyed sitting
down and talking with
Harold Crosby. Harold
was a walking, talking
book of facts! He not
only remembered events
with clarity but also the
dates that corresponded
to the events. That was
especially helpful when
we were preparing
for our centennial
celebration as a Network.
Harold ministered
in fourteen different
Assembly of God
districts and visited sixty
countries as Missions Director, leading MAPS Teams and preaching the gospel
at every opportunity. He directed Kid’s Camps, authored Sunday School
training courses and recorded numerous Sunday School teaching series and
Children’s Church teaching series with his wife, Lorene.
In my own life and ministry, Harold was a tremendous influence. I invited
Harold to speak at our first missions convention at Faith AG in Uniontown. He
LOVED missions and was both passionate and articulate in inviting others to
participate through prayer and financial support. But it was afterwards – when
we were having lunch – that Harold gave me some valuable tips on church
finances – tips that I adhered to throughout my pastoral ministry.
As I reflect on the life and ministry of Brother Crosby, I am amazed at the
thread of continuity that is demonstrated in the way that he served the
Lord. He had a long-standing value of the Spirit-filled life. In a conversation
preparing for our Network’s centennial, Harold reflected that he became a
“black sheep” in his family during his youth because of his affiliation with the
Pentecostal movement. Despite that consequence, Harold said “those are
my kind of people, and I’ve been one of them ever since.” He had a heart for
kids, a heart for missions and a heart for the lost. Those values can be seen
in the way that God used him in ministry as a church planter, as “Mr. Sunday
School” and as our Network Missions Director. Harold lived to be 103 – his
was a life well-lived! ~ Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of
the fourth part of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my
last end be like his! (Numbers 23:10; KJV)
RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN
THE FIVE-FOLD
As pastors and leaders of churches, God has called each of us into
the ministry. But the direction that calling takes is different for each individual based on the
giftings that He has given you. There are the manifestational gifts found in 1 Corinthians 12 and
the ministry gifts found in Romans 12. There are also the motivational, or five-fold, gifts found in
Ephesians 4: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.
Most people have a primary and secondary gifting. My primary gifting is pastor/teacher, and I lean
towards apostolic as secondary. This means that I lean into teaching the Word of God, giving
practical takeaways, writing bottom lines and helping people understand what the Bible says. But I
also invest in seeing God’s Kingdom expand. What about you? Maybe your primary gifting is pastor
and you lean more toward evangelist or prophet.
Christ gave all of these giftings to work together to equip His people and build up the church. This
means that no one person can do it all on his or her own! When you know your own giftings, you
can then find others who have different gifts and work cooperatively to be most effective.
One way we have done that at GT Church is by having an evangelist on our team. We support
Greg Hubbard’s ministry financially, and he helps to equip our people to be more evangelistic.
He preaches at GT throughout the year while bringing strong altar calls, leading missions trips and
holding refresh services. Another way that we’ve done this in the past is through supporting those
with an apostolic gift by having a missionary house - a place for missionaries to stay while
on furlough.
Maybe your church isn’t able to do either of those things, but it’s important for you to determine
what you can do. While it’s true that sometimes you will be called on to do the work of a gifting that
may not be your strength, it’s important to seek out individuals with those giftings and allow them to
be used.
Imagine what God can do when all of the gifts are being used in ministry.
If you have questions about what this could look like for your church,
I’d be happy to talk with you. Please feel free to call me at 610-678-0266.
DISCERNMENT
A Fresh Look at our Spiritual Lives
Each new year is a time for personal evaluation. As leaders
working in a five-fold ministry gifting, this checklist is a great tool to
help us and our teams discern how we are doing:
» Are we scriptural, or does what we preach and teach not line up with the Bible?
» Do we confess and point to Jesus, or do we take the emphasis off Him and
highlight other things instead?
» Are our prayer lives apparent and robust, or do we not care about our own time
with God because we are just “too busy” with other “important” work?
» Do we evidence the fruit of the Spirit or the sins of the flesh? Are we prickly?
What readily leaks out of us in stressful situations or when we don’t get our way?
» Do we live holy lives, or are we toying with various immoral behaviors or
questionable ethics? Is our speech unclean; do we tell off-color jokes?
» Are we humble, preferring others above ourselves, or are we prideful, drawing
attention to ourselves?
Adapted from Dr. Carolyn
Tennant and Dr. Joseph
Girdler’s book, Keys to the
Apostolic and Prophetic:
Embracing the Authentic
- Avoiding the Bizarre,
(Louisville, KY: Meadow
Stream Publishing, 2019),
154–155.
» Are we willing to suffer for Christ’s sake and pay the price that comes with our
calling, or are we looking for ease?
» When we have a tough message to give from God, do we share this with pain
and the fear of the Lord or with haughtiness and a judgmental spirit, evidencing a
self-righteous attitude?
» Do we want to move toward unity, being peacemakers and drawing people
together, or are we divisive and leave factions in our wake?
» Are we no respecter of persons, clearly loving everybody no matter our race,
culture, gender, looks, health, or financial status, or do we try to get into the
graces of the “right folks”?
» Through the grace of God, do we move in the gifts of the Spirit and follow His
leading, or are we not sensitive to the Holy Spirit and His direction, desiring to be
in personal control?
» Are we teachable and open to correction, guidance, and growth in our ministry,
or are we “above” any of these things, acting as if we really don’t need anybody
else telling us anything?
» Are we full of integrity, transparent, and humanly “real,” or are we masquerading,
hiding our inner selves, full of deceit?
» Are we real servants to others, or do we expect to be served and honored by
others?
GUEST CONTRIBUTOR Pastor Joe Terreri
Four Takeaways from the
THRIVE CONFERENCE
I had the opportunity to bring our pastoral staff to the THRIVE
Conference this fall. We were all challenged, encouraged and inspired
by our time with our PennDel Ministry Network family and Dr. Carolyn
Tennant. Here are four takeaways from our time at the THRIVE
Conference.
1.
2.
That was the clearest biblical teaching on the role of the
prophet we had ever heard. For many on our team, our experience had
been that most teaching on prophetic ministry usually veers off into the bizarre
and downright goofy. We were genuinely informed by Dr. Tennant’s teaching on
prophetic ministry in the local church. We walked away from Tuesday morning’s
session desiring to stay open to how the Spirit of God is desiring to speak to our
church through those with the gift of prophecy.
Evangelism is more effective when we try to identify where
the Spirit is already working in people’s lives. Instead of trying to “do
evangelism” as some kind of scripted speech or forced conversation, Dr. Tennant
challenged us to approach evangelism with the mindset of joining with God where
He is already at work in the lives of people who are far from Him. In my mind that
takes the pressure off me to say the right words and instead to listen to both the
person we are trying to share the Gospel with and to what the Spirit is wanting to
say through us.
Joe is the Lead Pastor of
Connection Church in North
Coventry, PA. He has served
at Connection (formerly
Spring Valley Community
Church) for 13 years. He is
a 2006 graduate from the
University of Valley Forge.
He is married to Cheryl,
and they have four children:
Joseph (12), Lucy (10), Olivia
(7) and Ezra (5 months).
3.
4.
Those with apostolic giftings need to discern where they should
put their focus. As Dr. Tennant pointed out, those with apostolic giftings can
have so much passion to push back the darkness and take new territory for Christ’s
Kingdom that they can have trouble knowing where they should invest their time
and energy because they are so aware of the needs all around them. The challenge
to discern where God is calling us to focus in the midst of lots of opportunity was
helpful for our team.
Healthy Pastors, Thriving Churches is a vision I believe in. I love
the direction our Network is going. It was so encouraging to head home from the
THRIVE Conference with so many helpful takeaways that were enriching for both
my own life and Connection Church. It’s a privilege to be a part of what God is
doing in the PennDel Network. I can’t even begin to imagine what God could do
through a group of pastors who are committed to being whole and healthy human
beings as they lead their churches to make everything about Jesus’ glory and
mission to make disciples of all nations.
SECRETARY/TREASURER Jeff Marshall | 717.795.5921 | jeff@penndel.org
We are celebrating the first graduating class of the PennDel
School of Ministry! This is a great milestone in the history of
PDSOM. Five students have completed all three levels of classes.
Congratulations to Jason Jodon, David Kepple,
Marianne Kuchta, Jared Newhart and Judy Tkacs.
JASON JODON, ONE OF THE GRADUATES, STATES:
“A little over three years ago, I found myself called to ministry; however,
the option to leave my family to attend traditional Bible College was both
logistically and financially unfeasible.
PennDel School of Ministry became an answer to prayer. I enrolled in the
inaugural class in September of 2016. Since that time, I have become
licensed and completed the educational requirements and the advanced
ministerial internship for the Ordination credential level.
It has been a blessing to see the program expand from a single classroom
at Monroeville Assembly of God to now four campuses across the PennDel
Network. I am excited to see what continued blessings the Lord bestows
upon this program. I have, and will continue to recommend, the PennDel
School of Ministry to those seeking to fulfill the education requirement of the
fellowship for credentialing, as well as, laity interested in increasing Biblical
and doctrinal knowledge.”
OUR SUPERINTENDENT, DON IMMEL, STATES:
“The results of PDSOM's growth from its first location in Monroeville to now
four locations across the network is due to Spirit-filled leadership, cooperation
and the time invested by our lead pastors to pour into the students.”
PennDel School of Ministry has become a vital part to the mission of the
PennDel Ministry Network by developing ministry leaders. An opportunity for
you to invest in this mission, is to sponsor a student via scholarship for one or
more courses. For more information on scholarship investment contact Robert
GUEST CONTRIBUTOR Kurt Jenkins
DISCOVERING Your Lane
Kurt Jenkins is the lead pastor
at Central Assembly of God
in Houston, PA and author of
Everyday Leadership. He is married
to his best friend, Charisse,
and has four world-changing
children. Kurt is passionate about
equipping and releasing people
into their God-given destiny while
empowering them live a naturally
supernatural life.
Road trips can be very exciting, but getting lost while on your way can be very frustrating. Even
when you are headed in the correct direction, getting into the right lane at the right time can be a
challenge.
This example is similar to our potential in Christ. Once we are born-again, we are no longer lost but
headed in the right direction. However, there is also a lane in which we are meant to travel. There
are specific ‘ministry lanes’ that Jesus designed for His church in which each believer can function.
It is our privilege to discover how our spiritual gifts, passions, personality and skills fit together in a
certain lane to help build the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-13 says that “Christ gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors
and teachers to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,
attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
There are those who are called to lead in these five ‘ministry lanes’ with the anointing and authority
needed to equip the body from a leadership position. At the same time, each believer can add
strength to the local church by discovering in which one of these lanes they can also thrive.
HERE ARE FIVE PRACTICAL WAYS TO DISCOVER YOUR MINISTRY LANE:
Focus on function, not title – Focus on how you can add value to
your local church, not what title you have. Jesus needs equippers, not
superstars.
Observe your current lane – If you regularly sense the Lord sharing ideas
with you for others or for your church, you are in the prophetic lane. If you
have a high value for a caring community, you are in the pastoral lane, and
so on…
Take an assessment – DestinyFinder.com is a useful online tool that
offers a free assessment based on the Ephesians 4 model, along with more
in-depth assessments from Ephesians 4, Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12.
Keep moving forward – Often times the best way to discover your lane
is to find a place to serve and see what leads to the most fruitfulness and
fulfillment. This area should energize you, not deplete you.
Learn more – A solid resource is Carolyn Tennant’s book, Catch the Wind
of the Spirit. At PennDel’s recent THRIVE Conference, Carolyn presented a
great Biblical view on how all five ministries should work in harmony to build
the body.
God still desires each one of these ‘lanes’ to be expressed through His body in today’s church. This
will happen supernaturally as we seek God for His unique design as individuals, and also naturally
as we implement practical ways to equip our churches with a balance of all five. It is possible, and
biblical; it requires your participation. Enjoy the journey and begin discovering your lane today!
CHURCH PLANTING Tom Rees | 717.795.5921 | tom@penndel.org
FRESH
Snow or
Icy
When we become a leader, we imagine leadership
to be like skiing through beautiful slopes of newly
SLOPES
fallen snow. Some of us have found the reality to be
quite different. The leadership slopes have been more
challenging than we would have ever imagined.
One year, I shared with my family that I wanted to learn to ski. At Christmas, my family jumped on that idea
and gave me a few nights in Vermont complete with ski passes. As we drove, we marveled at the beauty
of the freshly fallen snow. After a good night’s rest in the cabin we ventured out with great anticipation to
Killington Ski Resort.
Upon arrival, I was ready to hit the “Learn to Ski” slope, but my girls had other plans. They decided to teach
me and felt it would be best to take me up the gondola to the highest mountain. The logic was it is easier to
learn to ski when you have some speed.
Unfortunately, when we got off the gondola instead of freshly fallen snow we discovered ice. Soon my lack of
experience on the slope created a frightening experience… for me and for those who were trying to navigate
around me. Killington almost KILLED me!
As we navigate leadership and life, sometimes we find ourselves on icy slopes. One of the concepts that Ken Sande
identifies through The Young PeaceMaker is that conflict can present us with a slippery slope. Just like I found myself
skiing off the trail, many of us tend to have the default of either escape mode (flight) or attack mode (fight).
What is your default response to conflict?
If you find yourself on an icy slope, let me encourage you that you are not alone.
To assist you and your ministry, PennDel offers coaching, training and mediation.
We stand ready to help you and are only an email or phone call away.
PLANTING THE 5-Fold Seeds
IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN
I remember when my parents
moved out to the country. The
following spring as I began third grade,
my parents cultivated a large plot on their
one-acre property into a garden; I remember
thinking, “This is going to be one huge
garden!” They planted everything...corn,
tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green
beans, potatoes and more. There were
evenings spent weeding, watering and
cultivating.
Throughout the summer the deer, ground
hogs, squirrels and pheasants would eat the
plants and most of the produce. When fall
came, there was no harvest to be shown
for all that effort. The following year my
parents did not plant a single seed in that
garden, and the huge plot of land became a
wasteland of weeds.
As church leaders we need to learn a
lesson: we only get what we plant, water
and cultivate. Many times we’re not planting
the seed, but we’re expecting a harvest.
This happens with adults, but it is especially
true in the lives of children.
We tend to think of the five-fold ministry of
apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors
and teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12) as offices
and gifts for adults. All too often, children
are not taught about these gifts. Children
are just in the beginning stages of trying to
figure out who they are and how God wants
to use them. We need to spend more time
introducing children to the five-fold gifts.
Many children have the heart of a pastor,
but not the calling into full time pastorate
work. Even as a child they care for others,
and their shepherding gift begins to bloom.
Children need to know there is a place of
service in the body for those who have
pastoral gifts.
We don’t see many children holding the
office of the evangelist, but many kids are
very willing to share their faith and even
develop strategies to win other children to
Jesus. They have the gift of evangelism.
I remember a sixth grade girl who asked
me to help her win her classmate to Jesus.
She wanted help to convince her Jewish
friend to believe in Jesus. She had the gift of
evangelism.
I’ve had children who wanted to help
teach a Sunday school class or lesson in
kids’ church. I’m amazed how children
can take a concept and break it down so
other children can understand. They have
the gift of teaching. As church leaders, we
need to plant these seeds and cultivate
the growth in children’s lives. How effective
their ministry gifts will be when they become
adults!
I learned as a child you only reap a great
harvest if you plant the right seeds and then
cultivate and protect the crops until maturity.
Don’t be afraid to help children find the gifts
within themselves. Imagine what they will
become at harvest time.
Friends of BONGIORNO
Our hearts are overflowing with thankfulness at the
overwhelming response with our “Friends of BCC”
initiative. Our conference center has a legacy of
spiritual impact. Your partnership enables us to extend
that impact with increasing excellence into the future.
THANK YOU for your generosity!
Don Immel, Network Superintendent
We
launched Friends of Bongiorno at the THRIVE Conference this past October. What a tremendous time for our leadership.
We experienced powerful worship and tremendous teaching from Carolyn Tennant on the five-fold ministry gifts. We also
spent some time vision casting for the Bongiorno Conference Center as well as receiving financial commitments from many
of our churches and pastors for monthly support. Total monthly support exceeded $3400; what a blessing! Cash offerings to jumpstart
recreation options totaled $3598.
As many of you know, we have closed
down the golf course and will be using that
acreage for ministry purposes. We have a
very ambitious list of ministry and recreation
options we want to put in place.
• A prayer path with benches & scripture
placards that will inspire meditation &
prayer
• Two outdoor amphitheaters; one with a
stage, power & lighting, another more
rustic
• Gathering spaces with campfire pits &
benches/chairs
• Frisbee golf and foot golf
• Mountain bike trails and perhaps Quad/
ATV trails
• Combat archery field course
• Miniature golf course for children, youth &
families
• Human soccer knocker ball
• In the future, a low/high ropes course &
perhaps a zip line
We also shared a vision for a new recreation
area. Dream with us for a recreation facility.
We are working with an architect and this
building will replace the current outdoor
basketball and tennis courts.
This facility will include…
• Double-sized gym. (2 basketball courts)
with 10’ garage doors on both sides for
an optional, open air feel
• Snack bar & bistro area: indoor seating
opening to an outdoor patio connected to
our pool
• Game room much larger than what we
now have
• Workout area very similar to what one
finds in a hotel
• Indoor climbing wall with auto belays
• Recreation room for indoor adventure
sports & team building
• Office space and storage
• Patio deck connecting the pool and
recreation building offering three season
outdoor seating
• Pool renovations: new concrete lining to
prevent leakage
• Making the entire pool a five foot depth
for greater usage
• Zero entry at the shallow end
• Bench seats with Jacuzzi jets
• New plumbing, filters & pumps
This will be a blessing not only to our
PennDel children, youth and families, but
you pledge monthly to missionaries, make
that same pledge to Bongiorno. After
all, it is here where lifelong callings to
Christian service, full-time ministry and even
missionaries are solidified.
We at Bongiorno will make a
commitment to you…
• To keep you informed multiple times each
year as to the life-change happening on
our campus
• To provide a support certificate to be
displayed in your church
• To hold an annual “Friends” banquet for
lead pastors of supporting churches and
to individuals who pledge support. (This
includes a free night’s stay if needed)
YOUTH MINISTRIES/DYD Lee Rogers | 717.795.9780 | lee@penndel.org
THE NEED to be Needed
There is a great danger that limits the impact of young youth pastors and leaders; it is both subtle
and debilitating. It’s an intoxicating and addicting phenomenon that cuts short the Biblical purpose
and scope of ministry for many who follow God’s call. Very few see it coming and—once it engulfs
a person—it can be challenging to shake. It’s not moral failure or compromise, it’s not burnout or
conflict. It’s something far more subtle and deceptive: the need to be needed.
To read more about
the dependency/
equipping models
of ministry, check
out Unfinished
Business:
Returning the
Ministry to the
People of God
by Greg Ogden.
(Zondervan, 2003)
It feels good to be needed, and when you serve in youth ministry, there’s a real sense of fulfillment
when teenagers are dependent upon you. Teenagers depend on us to give them the Word, provide
worship, share the Gospel with their friends and meet their general pastoral needs. This is called a
dependency model of ministry. When someone depends on us for all of this, it can feel good and
even contribute to our self-worth. Here’s the problem: we are not called to develop teenagers into
perpetually needy spiritual-children who are dependent on us but mature believers who know how
to depend upon God. We are called to equip teenagers to do God’s work and build one another up
until we all become mature in the Lord.
Youth pastors and leaders are particularly susceptible to this trap because adolescence is a needy
time. However, we must strive for better for both the students’ sake and for our own. As Greg
Ogden wrote, “Underlying the dependency model of ministry is a distorted and unhealthy means
of seeking value.” To the contrary of this dependency model, Ephesians 4:11-12 teaches us an
equipping model for ministry. “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the
prophets, the evangelists, and the shepherds and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s
people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.” Each of us, whether we have
the gift of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Shepherd or Teacher (APEST), are to do one thing: equip the
people of God to do His work and build up the church.
Are you an equipping youth pastor or leader? Or have you unknowingly fostered a culture of spiritual
infancy through a dependent model of youth ministry? Are the APEST gifts in operation to equip
God’s teenagers?
Here are some simple assessment questions to help you determine whether you
have a dependency model or an equipping model:
• Do our students study the Scriptures and pray on their own?
• Do they worship God with their everyday lives or mostly just in church
services?
• Do they know how to hear from the Holy Spirit and respond?
• Do our students readily serve and love those around them, including
their lost friends?
• Do our students share the Gospel? Are they even prepared for that?
• What changes do we need to make to move in an equipping direction?
• In what ways should our APEST gifts contribute to an equipping
ministry?
ROYAL RANGERS
Teach and Keep Boys for Christ
When Royal Rangers started in 1962, the vision was
to Reach, Teach and Keep Boys for Christ. The
vision statement has been updated to become more
descriptive. We desire to Evangelize, Equip and Empower the next
generation of Christlike men and lifelong servant leaders. We are a
mentoring ministry developing the whole boy for Jesus.
Royal Rangers provides opportunities for boys and young men to
see leaders modeling behaviors that reflect the character, kindness
and zest for life that Jesus showed. Leaders live out the command
to “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. - 1
Corinthians” 11:1 (NIV) Royal Rangers learn to be servant leaders
as they take responsibility for organizing and conducting meetings
and events under the guidance of men. They learn to participate in
whole church ministry through missions or evangelistic outreaches
to the community. They learn to be team players and partners by
supporting children’s church, their youth group or worship team.
Some of these lessons are taught in meeting rooms and some are
developed outside the walls of the church. The PennDel Network
is blessed to have a camp where Royal Ranger boys and young
men can learn life lessons, skills, responsibility, develop lifelong
friendships and respond to altar calls at council fires for salvation, in
filling of the Holy Spirit and calls to ministry.
Part of our vision is to
develop Camp Berry in
order to provide more
opportunities for training
camps, fun activities and,
most importantly, a place to
hear God’s Word preached.
Part of that vision is coming
to fruition as construction on a shower house has started. Young
men and boys will gain ownership and a sense of satisfaction by
joining in completing this project before the 2020 District Powwow.
Five resources I’m currently enjoying!
The Transforming Work of the
PROPHETIC VOICE
I
am still reflecting on the powerful teachings and worship moments from our THRIVE
conference this past October with Dr. Tennant. There was such a sweet presence
and sensitivity to what the Spirit was doing that is hard to put into words…you just
had to be there! I was especially encouraged by her session on the prophetic and the
great need for this underused stream of the five-fold ministry in our churches.
In 1 Samuel 10:5-7, Samuel says to Saul, who he’s just anointed as King, “…As you
approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down
from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played
before them, and they will be prophesying. The Spirit of the Lord will
come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you
will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do
whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you”. The prophetic voice
and music have such a strong correlation throughout scripture. At THRIVE, Dr. Tennant
mentioned that the prophetic is one of the most underused giftings in the church
today. There are a number of reasons for this…counterfeits, lack of teaching, fear of
the unknown, etc. She says in her book, Keys to the Apostolic and Prophetic, “It takes
faith to allow God’s songs to become our songs. Worship leaders must be willing to
step out and release new songs, forgetting their pride and the uncertainty of where
the unknown song will go. As they forge ahead with fresh words and melody from the
Lord, God will work powerfully and touch lives.” There is a deeper level of intimacy that
can be had in the prophetic (worship) that brings about powerful change for specific,
divine moments. This is what we see evidenced in the life of Saul in 1 Samuel 10. The
prophetic words spoken over Saul literally transformed him into a “different person.”
The prophetic changes, convicts, heals, delivers, transforms, etc.! How we need this in
our churches today!
So how can we begin to incorporate prophetic worship into our churches and see
the powerful transformation it brings? Begin to practice the prophetic in your personal
worship times. Ask the Lord to open your eyes, ears and heart to understand what the
Lord is speaking for specific moments. This will develop a sensitivity and confidence to
step out in faith and obedience when the Lord begins to move and speak in these ways.
Let’s begin to reclaim and unleash the authentic,
prophetic voice across our fellowship!
PENNDEL WOMEN Liz DeFrain | 484.686.4554 | liz@penndelwomen.com | penndelwomen.com
WE ARE Home
The Women’s Department is seeing fantastic opportunities happen for
women throughout our Network. In other Christian circles, there has been
a backlash against women in ministry, causing many women to use the
hashtag #NOTGOINGHOME, on social media platforms. However, I believe
the correct statement for those of us in the Assemblies of God is this: WE
ARE HOME.
Never has there been a better time for God to both highlight and use
women in the five-fold ministry gifts. The scripture in both Joel 2:28 and
then repeated in Acts 2:17 says, “In the last days... I will pour out my Spirit
upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men
will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days, I will
pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they
will prophesy.” How does this outpouring express itself in everyday life?
I believe one of the most significant responsibilities and privileges of the
Women’s Department is to seek and recognize women who are called and
then help equip and mentor them. On any given Sunday, if women stopped
serving in their calling, the church at large would suffer tremendously.
Close your eyes and think about your church this coming Sunday, and
then remove all the women who serve. Whether they are leading, teaching,
preaching, evangelizing or prophetically speaking, their unique style and
gifts bring so much to the table!
Jesus brought honor to women, elevating their status during a time when
a woman was simply property. Think for a moment, Jesus could have
shared the “living water” with anyone, but He chose the woman at the
well. “The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city,
and saith to the men, ʻCome, see a man, which told me all things that
ever I did: is not this the Christ?ʼ” That was a bold move! In a time where
culture said women were to be silent, Jesus freed her to speak about the
power of God. Her speaking caused many of the Samaritans to come to
follow Jesus. Some say she was the first woman evangelist. Whether she
was the first or not, I wouldn’t know, but I am grateful for women who are
evangelists and still sharing the living water today.
The apostle Paul thought a woman was capable enough to lead. He
mentions Priscilla (Pricia) in Romans 16, who led a house church with her
husband, Aquila, and Phoebe, who was thought to be a deaconess and
of course, Junia, who, along with her husband Andronicus, where listed as
apostles. “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in
prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in
Christ before I was.” Romans 16:7 NIV
I believe God is up to something truly amazing these days,
and I am thankful to be a woman in the PennDel Ministry
Forty-two years ago, I met Paul Dennis
Poole by the tabernacle at Living
Waters Camp in Cherry Tree, PA. He
remembered me as being feisty. I
remember him as being incredibly cute and full
of opinions. Two years later, we were married!
Since we were each the youngest child
in our respective families, we were both
accustomed to being the entertainer, the
one being spoiled, the one that everyone
thought was “cute.” That could be a terrible
mix – two babies each seeking the same
thing. But it turned out to be an incredible
life. We spoiled each other entertained each
other, and made the other laugh!
Paul was an encourager. When I complained
about my failures, he showed me what I
did accomplish. He believed in me…and
so many others. He often spent time with
young ministers trying to help them see the
potential that God saw in them. He was so
good at that!
Paul loved to brag on his family. There was
never a soccer player like Nick. No one
could run like Natasha. The most brilliant
grandson ever is Zack. The feistiest, cutest
granddaughter is Evelyn. And Lukas already
has shown that he is far ahead of all other
children ever born!
GOD IS GOOD
Paul taught me to look for the good in
others; look for the good in each situation.
Learn to find (search for, dig for) the good. It
is there if you look. Even in the most difficult
times, there is good.
But more importantly, look for God in every
situation. He is there. And He is always,
always good.
“This poor man called, and the Lord
heard him; he saved him out of all
his troubles… Taste and see that the
Lord is good.” Psalm 34:6, 8
When I received that call on May 22 that
Paul had taken a “tumble,” I had no idea
of the challenges that would follow. As his
head was being cradled by a co-worker,
he looked up and said, “You know, Dave,
God is good! God is still good!” Yes, these
six months had been very challenging. The
brace, the sleepless nights, the difficulties
associated with a life-threatening injury. And
through it all – God has been good!
On November 2 when we first heard the
words, “you have lymphoma”, my breath
was taken away. We were shaken to our
core with questions, decisions and out-ofcontrol
outcomes. I felt as though I was on a
crazy roller coaster ride… with no tracks but
lots of ice.
The week before Thanksgiving, the doctors
explained to us the seemingly hopeless
situation; they were unable to do anything
more to prolong Paul’s life. I floundered for
something. Anything that would bring me
comfort; anything that would bring me hope
or anything that would make sense of this.
After all tubes and life support had been
removed from Paul, I walked into his cubicle
to the most amazing sight. For the first time
in three weeks, my Paul was looking at me
with a smile, filled with joy and peace. He
knew he was going home. He had complete
peace. There was no fear. There was the
blessed hope that he would soon be where
he had lived his life to be.
Over the next day and a half, there was no
wavering in his faith. He continued to look
at me with loving eyes. He continued to give
me that “I love you wink.” Paul was alert,
comfortable and at peace. And he knew,
more than any of us that God is good. No
matter what. God is good.
Today, as I write this, like Paul, I know that
God is not afraid of my questions. He sees
my brokenness and knows my weariness.
And so, I hold on to what Paul has taught
me. “God is good!”
