MIDCOAST UNION PICNIC
A DAY AT THE RACES

Picnic Day Maiden Plate
A great day at Taree racecourse for
everyone, especially Jock Fraser,
awarded Apprentice of the Year.
The Picnic Day started with some members
having early morning BBQ’s, whilst
others travelled from locations with over
1.5 hours travel and distances over 100
km away. Once all arrived at the Taree
racecourse a members’ meeting was
held run by local Official Damien Welsh
prior to the day’s festivities beginning.
This was then followed by a presentation
for the “Apprentice of the Year”
which was awarded to Jock Fraser
from the Parks and Gardens section, a
welcome addition to the day by all who
were in attendance at the time.

This was followed by two speeches,
one given by Luke Hutchinson
the Coordinator of the “New Gen”
Committee and as the Official awarding
the Apprentice of the Year, and the second
was by MidCoast Council Mayor
David West, who thanked all for attending
and for all the hard work the members
had put in over the past 12 months,
which had not gone unnoticed by the
Councillors. The Mayor then finished
off by stating the importance of what
Unions do and being in the Union.
After the presentation, the newly appointed
Apprentice of the Year presented
the “winners sash” in the first race
of the “MCC USU Picnic Day Maiden
Plate”.
The day also featured Fashions on the
Field for both male and female members,
nibbles, drinks, lunch and a few
winners for some. The day was, as
always, a huge success and loads of
fun for all that attended, with approximately
250 members turning out for this
increasingly popular day. The Picnic
Day has grown every year since the
amalgamation, and hopefully next year
with the “Water Services” section now
having the same day for Picnic Day,
we will see the day enjoyed by over
350 members alone without partners in
attendance.
