Does anyone else feel like as we enter into a new decade,
your annual News Year’s resolution pledges seem a bit
underwhelming?
The regular promises (you know the ones) to eat better,
join a gym, take up a sport, finally start making all the DIY
projects saved to your Pinterest boards - oh just me? These
are all a bit dull when we’re poised to begin a brand new
decade...
In seriousness, I’m happy to be leaving some stages of life
back in the 2010s. Personally and professionally, these past
ten were years of immense learning, setbacks, growth and
preparation, laying the groundwork and putting in long
hours. With the 2020s ahead of us, I’m excited to take all
I’ve learned and put it into practice.
So, rather than making a singular New Year’s resolution
for 2020, I’m opting to recognize the long game. My most
important goals are not things that can see through in a
single year! And that’s OK.
What was your favourite style of the
past decade? Tag @posterchildmag
I’m excited to be offering up our final magazine issue of
is truly timeless!
new meaning in this issue’s
cover story.
Vitiligo, Piebald and Albinism are
the names of their diagnoses, but
these three girls do not see their
rare skin conditions as a disease
or disorder. No way! In fact, the
models and their moms, travelled
a great distance to be part of this
shoot, celebrating their unique
skin and hope that they will inspire
other kids with similar conditions
while encouraging all kids to see
the beauty in differences!
Designer Q&A
THE MIDDLE
DAUGHTER
New for the Autumn/Winter season, British girlswear brand, The Middle
Daughter, delivers heaps of 70s nostalgia in a stand-out debut collection!
18
New for the AW19 season is the launch of The
Middle Daughter, a British brand for girls aged 2
to 14. With playful design at its core, the brand
provides unique styles in distinctive shapes while
keeping an accessible price point and practicality
at the forefront. The well-balanced collection offers
voluminous dresses and patterned tights alongside
simple sweatshirts with ruffle hems and sleeves,
while elevating wardrobe staples like leggings and
turtle necks with eye-catching patterns.
With its mix of contrasting prints, retro flower
patterns and boldly coloured stripes, this stand-out
debut collection stole our hearts, and we couldn’t
wait to ask co-founder Deborah Medhurst all about
her exciting new endeavour.
What inspired the name of your label?
When the idea to create a new kid’s label was first
decided, we unanimously agreed that it was to
be exclusively girls wear. It’s just so much more
fun to design. I liked the idea of, and actual word,
‘daughter’ and it had to have the important ‘The’. It
took me some time to figure out the middle word,
which is pretty ironic! I am also a middle daughter

Designer Q&A
20

so when it finally came to mind it felt absolutely
right. As a mother of boys, we joke that this is the
daughter I never had.
What made you want to design for children?
My design background is actually interiors and I
came in to kids fashion accidently. The usual thing
of having a baby and creating something around
that new lifestyle was very much how it happened
for me, (19 years ago!). I never planned a career
in fashion and sometimes feel quite surprised
that I have one, but truly love elements of it. I feel
designing for kids is a paradox; it’s freeing yet at
the same time restrictive. As is being a middle
daughter!
What is your brand’s mission statement or
goal?
I would like the label/company to be perceived
as kind, thoughtful and diligent. Having run a
considerable size kids fashion business previously
I actually wish for The Middle Daughter to be
smaller, more manageable, gentler even. We
don’t have plans to take over the world but intend
to create a business with strong values that fits
comfortably in to our lives. Calmer is the goal!
What are the motivations or inspirations behind
the designs?
I’m drawn to styles that I personally want to wear
but re-imagine them for a girl. For me coming at it
with that personal investment allows the collection
to develop with much heart. It is fashion but very
much with a kid-friendly eye.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
The ‘70’s and purely because of the nostalgia I feel
around it, having been a child in this decade.
Floral tiered dresses just speak to me.
What makes your label stand out in the
industry?
You’ll have to ask our customers! But to respond,
we like to think that we have our own distinctive
handwriting which has a point of difference. It’s
a crowded industry and I believe to have validity
within it, it’s important to create your own story.
The planet (or consumer) doesn’t need another
label if it offers more of the same.
What do you have coming up that you are really
excited about?
Having only just launched our very first collection
(AW19), the road ahead in itself looks pretty
exciting from here. Everything to gain. But the
‘in-the-foreground-excitements’ are dropping
SS20 and showing the AW20 collection – both are
hugely anticipated by us. It’s such a long game
from design to shop floor – my bemoan of our
industry!
What is/are your favourite item/s from the
current collection?
Without taking a breath, THE EVERYTHING BUT
THE GIRL dress in Vintage Floral. I wear it too,
It’s a midi-length soft jersey dress; slim bodice,
roll neck, with frill at hem. I intend to keep this
style in each collection for the
foreseeable future as it has
it all. Hence its name.
Nothing else needed.
Just add the girl.
Tocotó
Vintage

B
orn on the seaside of Formentera, a sunsoaked
Balearic Island off the coast of Spain,
Founder and designer Marta Navarro first
began giving life to her brand, Tocotó Vintage. Inspired
by her own children and the sea, urged by romanticism
and nostalgia, she recovered old vintage patterns
at antique markets and with great care, and a fresh
perspective began crafting pieces that would become
Tocotó Vintage.
First designe only for babies, the collection today is
offered for children aged one month - 12 years. Boasting
finishes of meticulous care, we are delighted by Marta’s
use of dusty colours (ranging from grey, taupe, pink
and weathered blue) lace edgings and exceptional
attention to detail and quality.
For the Autumn/Winter 2019 season, the Spanish
childrenswear brand invites us to step into its Bazaar
full of hidden secrets awaiting discovery. The collection
is full of romantic flower prints, glitter and white lace
balanced with chunky knits found as cardigans and cozy
crewneck pullovers, perfect for the season.
Animal print, an intrinsic element of Tocotó Vintage’s
DNA, is seen in a busy leopard print pattern found on
tulle, leggings, tracksuit separates, bonnets, shoes and
even as a faux fur collar.
For babies, bloomers in corduroy, soft knitted leggings
and organic cotton sweatshirts are some of our favourite
pieces for everyday wear. While flouncy blouses offering
surprising splashes of metallic lurex and tulle skirts are
irresistible when paired with a ribbed bonnet or lacetrimmed
collar.
You’ll find music, books, magazines - endless influence
and inspiration - everything is possible in The Bazaar,
most importantly, children are encouraged to find their
attitude and be themselves wearing Tocotó Vintage!
French beauty brand Nailmatic creates innovative
toxic-free beauty products that are perfect for a fun
at-home spa day with your mini.
First introduced to Nailmatic at a trade show, the
brand’s booth quickly became a favourite location of
the Poster Child team to stop in each season. Always
building on innovation and technology with their
smart nail polish vending machines, and growing list
of product offerings, Nailmatic stood out as a brand to
watch!
The French beauty brand is known for their gentle,
water-based nail polish which is 100% safe. Their
products are dermatologically tested and free of all
the yucky stuff, just 100% fun! Forget about harsh
removers, their array of sparkly, shimmery polish
shades comes off with soap and warm water!
For the bath, Nailmatic’s range of tub time products
are ready to make bath time your child’s favourite part
of the day. Bring on the foam! Bubbles and colours
bring the fun factor, while gentle formulas are kind
to your kiddo’s sensitive skin. From bath bombs to
organic soups, there are lots of great options to try.
And finally, made from apricot kernel oil, their Rollette
is a colourless lip gloss available in four tasty flavours
that let your kids play with makeup, just like mom!
We leapt at the chance to put their products to the
test and knew just the perfect person for the job.
California-based photographer and mom of two
Tenley Clark shared all her candid feedback in this
product review!
“I swear my daughter came out of the womb drawn
to all things that involve primping. She begged me
for nail polish as a toddler and I struggled to find
anything past the cheap character sets that lasted all
of one minute.”
that they were pink and glittery. I loved how they
applied perfectly and easily with one coat and dried
quickly. I mean, you can only expect a three-year-old
to keep her hands still for so long, right?
After that, we decided to test out the Rolette body
glitter gel. It rolled out easily and smoothly while
leaving a unicorn-eque trail of glitter as it went. It
dried quickly and stayed on her nicely, which her
glitter-phobic father appreciated.
Next up was the Rolette lip gloss. My daughter is
always trying to steal my lipstick and hoards all of the
chapsticks in our home! I was excited to try an option
that’s safe for her and doesn’t get gross or destroyed
as chapsticks do. She loved it because it felt like she
was applying a lipstick “like Mommy” that “tasted
yummy’ and I was pleased that it was clear and she
didn’t end up looking like the Joker afterwards.
Lastly, we headed up to bath to try out the fun bath
products. She loves bath colors and asks me for them
all of the time, so the fact that the bath salts were
colored was a big hit right off the bat. I let her wear
her mostly white swimsuit with my fingers crossed that
the colors wouldn’t stain her favorite suit before our
upcoming vacation. The giggles and exclamations of
feeling like a mermaid were abundant. Her swimsuit
was remarkably unscathed, and her sensitive skin was
just fine! The nail polish and glitter had washed off
entirely as promised. The only issue was getting her
out of the bath because she was having too much fun.
All in all, we absolutely loved all of the Nailmatic Kids
products we tried. I guess you could say, they nailed
it!”
Pictured: Severina Kids create eco-friendly children’s toys. The filling of
their dolls is 100% Polyester and 80% of it is made from recycled post-consumer
plastic bottles. The brand is pledging to go plastic free in 2020
replacing the UPS plastic envelopes for paper ones!
7 Ways To Improve Your
Kid’s Apparel Impact now!
(and the brands we love that make it easy)
38
We live in a time where convenience is king. In an
age of online shopping offering next day delivery,
pre-packaged monthly wardrobes and click-to-shop
social media, everything we want is only a tap away.
This marketplace of unparalleled convenience and
streamlined delivery is not necessarily a bad thing.
Spending less time in stores looking for products
and buying them can free up valuable space in our
calendar to fill with more quality family time, not to
mention fewer stressful shopping trips.
Unfortunately, in the name of convenience, we have
disregarded the environment and often, unknowingly,
ignore steps we can take to limit our impact. In this
article, we are discovering the 7-steps apparel goes
through during its life-cycle and, most importantly,
learning how we, as consumers, can do better. We’ve
partnered with the folks at Everlasting Wardrobe,
who graciously contributed their knowledge to help
us better understand these
steps, so we can do more to propagate sustainability
efforts and mitigate the less desirable effects of the
clothing we purchase for our children.
First up, Raw Materials. Cotton has many uses
and applications. It is an excellent clothing source,
obviously, and has been used for this purpose for
millennia. But, did you know it can take up to 5,000
gallons of water to create a T-shirt and a pair of jeans?
Let us blow your mind for a second; 2.4% of the
world’s crop share is cotton. That sounds about
right. But, 10% of all agricultural chemical waste and
25% of insecticide use, is associated with the growth
of this very same cotton. That is a huge discrepancy.
What about synthetic athleisure clothing, you ask?
These synthetic fibres are less water-intensive;
however, they, unfortunately, add to ocean pollution
when they aren’t properly recycled. Poor irrigation
practices used during cotton production have also
affected regions all over the world, even changed
the climate in some areas.

What can we do? Fear not, more eco-friendly
material options are being created everyday, such as
compostable denim and threads made from wheat
straw. Look for more sustainable fibres like organic
cotton, or properly made bamboo products. When
buying poly-blends reach for those that use recycled
plastics. Some of our favourite GOTS (Global Organic
Textile Standard) certified kids brands are MAINIO,
Burt’s Bees Baby, Art & Eden, Severina Kids and
CarlijnQ.
Pictured: The core of Organic Zoo’s ethos is to
produce clothes made in an ethical way and that
promise positive cultural change. Organic Zoo
use 100% organic cotton, Oeko-Tex standard
dyes and there clothing is produced entirely in
Europe with a resolute commitment to quality,
fair trade and, the environment.
Textile dying seems pretty simple when you think
about it; natural or human-made fibres must be
bleached to turn them white before they can be dyed
another colour. The chemicals produced during these
processes are pretty gross; lead, mercury, arsenic,
lye and nonylphenol (an endocrine disruptor) are all
among them. Without the proper disposal of this
waste, the risks to the environment are significant.
What can we do? How can we enjoy our blue shirts
but still keep them green? First, look for companies
that use more eco-friendly dyes in their processes, like
indigo! Next, make sure that brands you buy from do
their best not to pollute the air and local waterways. A
brand that has mastered the indigo process in styles
for both girls and boys is Indi Kids.
Buyers are aware, hopefully, that people in sub-par
conditions often manufacture clothing and goods
they consume. Thankfully, officials are not finding the
same level of egregious human rights violations as
they did in the past. Still, they are finding widespread
minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping
violations to be rampant within factories. The wages
given to employees throughout the developing world
are minuscule compared to profits. New initiatives
like having brands publishing their lowest wages in
their supply chain processes are hoping to make this
more transparent to customers.
Pictured: Masala Baby designs holistically to
create a sustainable long term approach for their
artistan partners. This ensures they can maintain
healthy working conditions and benefit
their community.
What can we do? You can help this issue by buying
goods and supporting companies whose core values
adhere to yours. Fairtrade certifications are a great
indication that a brand adheres to ethical practices
when it comes to their factory workers and the
working conditions. Mimi & Maggie, Masala Baby,
Eternal Creation, and EFVVA are examples of brands
that try to continually improve conditions for the
factories and the workers they employ. Online shop
Organic Zoo offers a range of 100% organic cotton

clothes that are produced entirely in Europe with a
resolute commitment to quality and fair trade.
Every day, thousands of tons of goods are shipped
from Asia to North America. Travelling by truck,
boat and train, they go a great distance to arrive at
companies that outsource their production. In the
process, billions of gallons of oil are used to complete
these journeys. Accidents involving trucks and even
container ships can have catastrophic effects for
marine life, flora and fauna. Shipping companies are
expected to make significant changes in the future in
the form of electric and self-driving trucks. Hopefully,
this evolution will make shipping more efficient while
reducing the risk of dangerous accidents on the road.
In the meantime, what can we do? The easiest way
to limit the distance needed to travel from creation to
your home is to buy garments Made in USA or other
countries in closer proximity to your home. There is
a thriving maker community in LA where everything
from fabric creation to construction occurs onsite.
Some great Made in USA brands are Omami Mini,
Pink Peony and Devon’s Drawer.
Retail packaging comes in a wide variety of sizes
and styles. For online retailers, shipping in recycled
corrugated boxes or polybags helps to reduce
environmental impact for the former and shipping
weight for the latter. These options do have other
consequences; printing, labels, tape, and packing
materials all add to the cost of the clothing piece and
its environmental impact.
What can we do? There are excellent choices for
brands to use instead of their current staples. For
example, new compostable polybags that, with
just air and sunlight, can be safely absorbed into
the ground are available on the market. Soy and
Vegetable oils also can be used instead of polybased
inks. Encourage the brands that you love to
use more sustainable packaging options! Kids on the
Moon deliver their products in a plant-based package
that will decompose entirely in just six weeks; they
are the first Polish company to use fully degradable
packaging - bravo!
The next Tweet or Instagram post has the power to
create an immediate fashion stir; fast-fashion retailers
are ready and waiting. With the ability to identify new
trends in real-time, some companies are able to bring
to market new items in as little as seven days.
More and more clothing is being created and
with lower quality. This problem is compounded
by poor clothing care. Many people wash clothing
with hot water, which breaks down clothing fibres
more quickly. Using a high-temperature drying cycle
also significantly adds to their carbon footprint. It is
estimated that 50 percent of a clothing item’s overall
carbon footprint is generated after its production.
What can we do? Use the power of your dollar and
commit to purchasing from brands that care about
the environment. There are many exceptional brands
out there that have taken these steps for you. Brands
like Age to Come and Noni Bee, have adapted size
ranges. And other more sustainable models like
thredUP, Poshmark, and Everlasting Wardrobe are
provided families with more options!
Even more simply, wash clothes at a cooler
temperature, air-dry them or using little to no heat,
and iron them less when possible. We can increase
the life of our clothing items and lessen our carbon
footprint and that of our wardrobe too.
On average, Americans throw away 82lbs of
textiles per year. They also purchase 400% more
per year than they did 20 years ago. These numbers
are directly related to the prevalence of fast fashion
brands and the cheaper materials they use to produce
clothing. Some of these brands even burn tons of
apparel, because it’s less expensive than shipping it
somewhere else. Recycling efforts are effective when
clothing is disposed of properly, but as much as 85%
of raw textiles end up in landfills.
What can we do? Re-sale and Repurpose! Consumers
must become more informed about proper disposal
practices; there are fantastic initiatives like Wearable
Collections based in NY that can help make your
recycling efforts easier. Wear your clothing longer;
by wearing a piece of clothing nine months longer, it
can reduce your carbon footprint for that garment by
30%. By purchasing one second-hand item instead of
new per year, we could save 6lbs of CO2 emissions:
the equivalent of removing half a million cars from
the road for a year! One brand that has gone head
and shoulders above others in the fashion industry is
Patagonia.
There are so many simple ways we can create positive
change and reduce the impact of our children’s
clothing! We encourage you to make 2020 the year
you take on the challenge.
