NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday December 17 2019 7 News Rangi Ruru’s high-achieving school leavers presented with awards DESCRIBED AS a young woman of integrity, humility and intelligence, Emily Davy is Rangi Ruru Girls’ School’s Dux for 2019. Announced at last week’s endof-year prize-giving in front of a packed audience at Christchurch Town Hall, school principal Dr Sandra Hastie said Ms Davy demonstrated an outlook beyond her years and lead by example. “Emily has repeatedly gained Elite Academic Colours, however, this is only one of her exceptional attributes with music, future problem solving, service and sustainability tracking alongside,” said Dr Hastie. “This year she is ranked at or near the top in all six of her subjects. We know that behind the successes are hours of commitment and plain hard work that contribute to this.” Year 13 student Tulsi Lathia won the title of Best All-Round Girl, a highly respected award at the school. An entrepreneur at heart, a humanist, and a self-starter, Dr Hastie said Ms Lathia lived to help others which empowered the people that she was helping. PRIZE: Year 13 student Tulsi Lathia was named Best All- Round Girl at the Rangi Ruru Girls’ School prize-giving. Said Dr Hastie: “She has a wonderful, positive attitude. Tulsi has willingly given many hours of her time mentoring younger students, in leadership roles, in sports and was on the Service Council.” In November, Ms Lathia and her Young Enterprise teammates DUX: Rangi Ruru student Emily Davy receives her award from year 13 dean Angela Lidstone. recently launched their unique cookbook, Spoonful of Spice, which presented the stories behind the recipes of refugee and immigrant women. Said Ms Lathia on last month’s cookbook launch: “You need to persevere to get to your end goal. It’s not easy, it never will be, and you just need to keep on trying.” Rangi Ruru student Amber Spurway was also named this year’s Proxime Accessit and received the Dorothy Bates Trophy for outstanding potential. Dr Hastie said she was a mentor for junior students, and her passion for learning had seen her gain 100 per cent of excellence grades in NCEA Level 2. “Amber is never willing to leave an assumption untested, or an argument half-spun. She has the ability to interpret and infer meaning beyond the words she’s presented with,” she said. Rotary supports families in need NEARLY $4000 worth of groceries were packed and distributed by the Christchurch Rotary Club to help families in need with Christmas. The club gathered at the Cashmere Club hall recently to pack 125 boxes of groceries for distribution amongst city charities and organisations who are at the front line when dealing with families feeling the financial pressures during the season. The organisations include Christchurch East Primary School, Family Help Trust, Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Society, Christchurch (Anglican) City Mission, Salvation Army, Canterbury Core Daddy’s and Battered Women’s Trust. The groceries were purchased from Pak’nSave Moorhouse Avenue, who supported the project.
