New College actively contributes to the life of the wider University andits main campus is set within University grounds. New College Postgraduate Village was opened in2009 and is home for postgraduates and selected senior undergraduates. New welcomes people of allfaiths and none. The College celebrates, and is enriched by, the diversity of backgrounds of its staff andstudents. A Message fromthe MasterFROM THEMASTER50 years for New College.10 years for New CollegePostgraduate Village.Six remarkable decades ofuniversity community life.Our sincere thanks to everyone who has joinedus this year for our major celebrations – it wasa great pleasure for Ruth and me to be ableto meet so many of you who have made suchwonderful contributions to our communities.Those from UNSW who have joined us duringthe year were deeply impressed by the enthusiasmand good memories that have endured so manydecades amongst our alumni. It was an invigoratingexperience.The history has been launched. My sincerethanks to Adela Davis and Jonathan Billingham fortheir diligent work over the past two years. Books arenot published without fastidious work. Their hardwork and attention to detail are a tribute to both ofthem. Of course, there was a much larger team thatare acknowledged therein but the contribution ofthese two to our communities is of special note.Until recently, I have only been able to speakin vague terms about our relationships with theUniversity, our place in the intellectual life ofAustralia, and the enduring and fine traditionsof our communities. Adela’s careful research anddocumentation now has this carefully reported andthe story is impressive. If you have not already doneso, I would encourage you to obtain your copy of thisremarkable volume. Details of how to do this arefeatured on the back cover of this edition.As we look back over the year, our celebrationsthemselves have been impressive. The Januaryweekend was fun-filled and community-filled asmany longstanding relationships were refreshed.The astonishing Alumni Revue – in true tradition ofNew College – was even backed up in November byThe Averagers, where present residents wove thecollege kitchen, light rail and popular culture intotheir own 2019 extravaganza.We have had cocktails to acknowledge 10 yearsof New College Postgraduate Village overlookingbeautiful Darling Harbour, entertained by a superbNCV band and finishing with an impressivefireworks display.We finished with the Foundation Luncheonand the History launch. It was delightful to sharethis occasion with so many. Adela, Wah Guan andJacqui retold our story amongst other speeches andreflections. How amazing it was to share that timewith Professor John Hawke, who travelled in fromthe other side of Orange and was able to look back tothe very beginnings of our colleges.All of this happened on top of an eventfuland outstanding year for our colleges. I take thisopportunity to thank Susan Bazzana and Arend Boogfor their careful oversight of our communities in thisyear of transition to Trimesters at UNSW. The workof our Deans is precious.We finish the year with the exciting news thatJonathan Billingham will be assuming the role ofDean of Residents at New College.
