President’s Message

FROM THE BOARDROOM

Emily Jelich l President

It has been an enormous privilege to serve as your President

for the last two years, but my time is up and this is my final

Wave message to you.

Following the Board’s Strategic off-site last winter, we

worked with Management to introduce quite a few changes

to the Club - testing different ways of using the second

floor, making upgrades in furniture, adding more diversity

of programming in all sections, and changing what and

how fees are charged. Change is hard, particularly when it

impacts a place that is so special and such an integral part

of our lives. Change is also important to ensure that we

continue to keep up with the evolving expectations of

our Members.

Not everyone is a fan of every change and many of you

wrote to me or Management about your concerns. We did

make adjustments in some cases, but, in many cases, we

held the course because we genuinely believed it to be in

the best interests of the Club as a whole. I hope that our

answers allowed you to feel comfortable that these

changes are made thoughtfully. As we continue with

efforts to improve the Club, the Board will keep working

with Management to hear your input, and test and learn.

I ask you to be patient and continue to work with us as we

strive to improve for the benefit of our community.

We won’t get it right every time, but we will always try.

I encourage you to join me at the AGM on January 27,

2020. While we are in a strong position in many respects,

we do have our challenges. The AGM is a great

opportunity for you to be able to hear about that in

more detail and, of course, to ask questions in person.

I expect animated discussion and look forward to

hearing your perspectives and providing more insight

on the Board’s thinking.

There is one challenge to the Club that the Board and

Management cannot fix alone. The rising water levels and

crumbling break wall threaten our Club. While the docks

are most obviously impacted, our grounds and facilities are

not well protected from these threats. High water, lack of

protection and storms are a very dangerous combination

for us and this has real financial consequences. As recently

as November 22, 2019, the International Joint Commission

managing outflows from Lake Ontario had its ability to

deviate from Plan 2014 extended. That’s good news

but, as this article https://www.intelligencer.ca/news/

local-news/ijc-we-want-to-be-flood-free shows more is

needed. We must continue to do more to advocate for our

waterfront – for ourselves and for all users of the Western

Beaches. I encourage you to become more involved in this.

It has been another very busy year on the Board. I would

like to thank each of the Directors who have worked

tirelessly on your behalf. It has been a wonderful

experience for me to work with all of you. While the Board

doesn’t always agree, we are fortunate to have such a

dedicated and diverse group looking out for us. I would

especially like to thank our retiring Directors. Each has

contributed to the improvement of the Club, bringing their

unique talents and perspective to help the Board fulfil its

mandate to you. It’s great to see new members joining the

Board - this will bring even more new ideas and

perspectives to the conversation.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank everyone who

volunteers on our Committees. There are quite a few

Committees that support the Club and make things

happen. We are so well served by all of you. Thank you!

Finally, I would also like to thank all the hard-working

members of Management and Staff. Mark and his team are

dedicated to maintaining Our Waterfront Oasis in the City.

I ask you to particularly remember Staff at this time of year

by contributing the Holiday Staff Gratuity Fund.

With that, I hope to see you at one of the many wonderful

up-coming events – from holiday festivities, to sports and

social events, to the Annual General Meeting itself. Thank

you and Happy Holidays!

If you’d like to know more about any of these points or you

have questions, as always please feel free to contact me at

president@boulevardclub.com.

Staff News

Left to right: Mario Camacho, George De Melo, Joe Camacho

JOE CAMACHO l MAINTENANCE

We Celebrate 40 Years Of Service!! Can you believe it?

Joe has been with The Boulevard Club for 40 years.

He started when he was only 19 years of age.

George De Melo, Facilities Manager, hired Joe.

They were friends before the Club, and continue to be

great friends. That is not where the family friendships

end. Joe has family connections to Mario in Purchasing,

Steven (night shift Tennis Courts) is a cousin and it goes

on. That is what the Club is to Joe – a workplace that is

filled with family, friendships, including the Members.

When Joe started in 1978, the Club had very few

families and now it is a wonderful ‘family’ Club.

At the time Joe started, we experienced ‘The Ice Storm’.

He slept at the Club because they were working around

the clock to repair damages.

Joe enjoys his connection with Camp Boulevard, too.

When all the kids are here and laughing and excited. He

has made an impression on quite a few. Even one happy

camper brought a plastic lawnmower with him one

morning so that he could help Joe – precious. Joe’s 40

years with The Boulevard Club are filled with precious

moments such as this example.

There have been many times a rescue has happened

for our wildlife – from seagulls, swans and just lately,

a bird that had fallen between our wall opposite the

SportsDesk. How this happened we just don’t know.

Joe carved a piece out of the wall to get to the bird.

He then took the bird to the Maintenance room at the

Boathouse. Left it some water, as it was dehydrated after

its 2 day experience trapped in the wall. By the morning

the bird had its energy restored, and was flying around

the room. The door opened and out it went.

ALICE SOFRANKO l RECEPTION SUPERVISOR

Alice’s last day with The Boulevard Club happened on

Monday, Dec 2. She had been an anchor for both our

Reception and SportsDesk for 6 years. At the Main

Reception, she was a Supervisor, which she found very

rewarding and enjoyed mentoring the team. You could

certainly hear Alice when she was carefully screening

the inquiry at the gate for entry, or laughing at a joke.

She and her partner have sold their home in

Roncesvalles and are taking a new BIG adventure.

They have bought a 13 acre hobby farm in the

Muskokas. There are plans to start a horse boarding

business and start their own apiary. Alice’s Dad was a

beekeeper and she would like to follow in his footsteps.

Chickens will be on the agenda as well. After 30 years

in the city, they will be expanding their family to

include a dog. Santa will be leaving them ‘his and her’

snowmobiles under their tree. Well, I think we can all

agree that Santa will be very good to Alice this year!

You will be missed, Alice.

From your Boulevard Club family, ‘Congratulations’

and all the very best for your next chapter of

‘Alice’s Adventures in Muskoka Land’.

Rescued Bird

Roncesvalles is where Joe and his family live. He walks

over the bridge every day to the Club. His two children

are older now and they also live in the area. For Joe, if

he is not travelling or fishing, he loves to be by water

and in nature. Life is good.

Yachting

Upcoming Events

Although the docks opened later than anticipated in 2019, the spectacular fall weather allowed Section Members

to take advantage of being on the water right up until the close of season on October 15. High water conditions

did not allow for The Club to hold the Tuesday Night Race Series therefore no Club Champion was named. However,

Boulevard Club sailors still enjoyed a successful season. Bill Roscoe had two firsts, a second, and a third in LOSHRS NFS

division 1. He and Janet also came in first overall in the NFS fleet in the Lake Ontario 300 Scotch Bonnet course as

well as winning line honours as the first boat to finish. The crew of Beyond Survival also won the Broad Reach Jilasi

for Girls Regatta and took home the MacMillan Trophy for winning the 2nd Annual Boulevard Club ‘Frosty 15’.

Phil Beecher in his first season on the docks had a hard fought 2nd place finish in the ‘Frosty 15’. Rob Bartholomew,

Ian Rogers and Ed Rees had a successful season at EYC. Ed and his crew finished their year with a great showing

at the J24 Worlds in Miami that included an incredible fourth place finish in the second race of the event.

The outstanding fall weather allowed our Junior Sailors to extend the After School Sailing program until October 23.

The extra water time really paid off for our Race Team that finished the year at the RHYC Cornish Hen Regatta. We had

three 420’s and three Opti’s attend. By far the youngest team at the event, The Boulevard Club was not intimidated as

the crews of Kate Rogers and Connor Kelly, and Lily Rogers and Lucas Quintas finished first and second respectively in

the 420 White Sail fleet. With a new Dockmaster now in place one day a week, the Yachting Staff anticipate a productive

off-season of planning. We look forward to seeing our Section Members at social and educational events over the

winter.

Upcoming Swim Meets

Our swim team will be hosting several other teams in our Invitational Swim Meets on January 26 and April 26.

Please be aware that the indoor pool will be closed on these dates from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. Help us cheer on our swimmers!

Future Aquatic Leaders are Making a Splash!

Have you noticed a few very talented and eager teens helping out during swimming lessons? Our very own Future Aquatic

Leaders have been working hard in and around the pool. They have already shown how much they have learned and are

completing their high school volunteer hours at the same time. Our leaders are not only assisting with swim lessons, but they

are also fostering a sense of community within the Club and developing themselves as mentors for our younger swimmers.

Future Aquatic Leaders will be running again this winter and spring. The program consists of two parts: Instructor-led

leadership development and in-water assistant instructing. At the end of the course, candidates will receive volunteer

hours and references to use with their future job applications. Contact aquatics@boulevardclub.com for more information.

Water Safety Message for Winter

Get ready for winter and remember to stay safe during the cold weather! No ice is without risk. Even thick ice can have weak

spots. Slushy ice or ice that has thawed and refrozen can be “rotten,” meaning that it will have many weak points. If there has

been sudden changes in weather, avoid ice at all costs. Use familiar routes when hiking, snowshoeing or during other outdoor

sports. Just like swimming, you should always approach ice with a buddy. Stay warm and enjoy the winter!

Spring Weddings

Spring is a beautiful time to lavish the decor with fresh flowers, and pastel colours.

Use a garden theme and trim the door frames with greenery.

The season translates perfectly to the world of wedding decor because we already associate pastel palettes—think pinks,

purples, whites, baby blues—and pretty blooms with this happy time of year. (All essentials at a wedding, if you ask us.)

So if you love flowers, pretty things, and sweet details, a Spring wedding may be your inspiration.

Embrace the season and all that it has to offer!

Continue the garden and flower theme by adding a flower to a signature cocktail to welcome your guests. Build a flower

wall to take pictures in front of, both for the wedding party and your guests. A romantic cake is one that has a garland of

fresh flowers cascading down a side. As a token gift for your guests, give them flower-pressed cookies.

What a gorgeous memory a Spring themed wedding creates!

MEMBER REFERRAL PROGRAM

Do you know someone who will be having a wedding in

2020 or 2021?

As a Member, you can refer a friend or family to the Club.

If they book their wedding here, you can qualify to receive

a $200 referral which will be placed into your account

upon receiving signed contract that meets a minimum

requirement of $10,000.
