Initially started in 1999 as a fundraiserto support The Lighthouse PreservationSociety, the dining room at the NewburyportLighthouse is so popular that it is often bookedfor months in advance. It’s also the only lighthousein the United States and possibly theworld that offers a dining out experience at thetop, according to Jay Hyland, president of TheLighthouse Preservation Society.As lighthouses historically stand out asbeacons of strength, security and solitude, sodoes the dining experience at the Rear RangeLighthouse. It’s just you and your significantother snugly situated in this tiny private glassenclosedroom most popular for proposals,anniversaries and birthday celebrations (therehave also been some very small weddingshere). Unless claustrophobic or acrophobic,the sweat equity built by arriving at the topof the lighthouse surely reveals one of the bestmilestone event destination investments in allof New England.“It’s like a walk-in closet but with milliondollar views,” said Hyland. “It is very relaxingup here. People are satisfied and have thatCheshire Cat grin.”Diners make a $350 donation to supportThe Lighthouse Preservation Society andaccess the dining room for up to five-and-ahalfhours. Customers get to choose a romanticmeal at the top of the lighthouse from one ofseveral local restaurants. This can be done bymaking a reservation ahead of time. Angie’sFood provides breakfast and brunch. Loretta(regional American fare), Brown Sugar bythe Sea (traditional Thai Cuisine) and theStarboard Galley (fresh local seafood) offerlunch and dinner. The Mission Oak Grill(high-end steakhouse, seafood specialties), andGlenn’s Food & Libations (eclectic cuisine,tapas) focus primarily on serving dinner. Thecost of the meals are extra from the donationbut at standard restaurant menu prices.The five stories to the top have revealedcountless chapters of memories amongst thoseexperiencing dining at the lighthouse. So manystories, in fact, that customers have writtenabout their unforgettable experiences in severallogs (next to the stereo and music selections)perched above the dining room table...Music and memories.“One guy hired an airplane with a sign‘Will you marry me?’” said Hyland. “He alsohired a limo and brought two dozen roses. Shewasn’t going to say no.”There’s even a balcony for more unobstructedviews and once in a while some magicalcolors in the skies...“Another guy in his mid-20s was concernedabout the weather,” said Hyland. “I said tohim that in the summer you get to see short(weather) systems go through and not to beconcerned. Plus, the weather patterns canlook very interesting from the top of the lighthouse.I convinced him to go through with it.Wouldn’t you know, there was a full rainbowfrom end to end!”The experience starts out with a greetingby wait staff at the base of the narrow lighthouseand then a brief pre-meal workout upthe stairs.Starting the climb to the top of the lighthouse.Steep, narrow staircase, but ultimately certainlyworth the effort...A few significant others have the commonnervous anxiety before proposing but also withno build-up to popping the big question. Thedining room and views are so nice, why wait?“Lots of guys are nervous, getting readyto propose,” said Hyland. “One such personproposed the very moment he got up here. Hecouldn’t wait!”The beauty of the area in one of NewEngland’s most impressive seaport cities can beseen at the top of the lighthouse whether waterviews... or a scene of downtown Newburyportthat looks like a toy village...Charming Newburyport.Yankee Magazine calls dining at theNewburyport Lighthouse as “One of thetop 35 destinations to make the ‘ultimateto-do list for New England Travelers.’” ThePhantom Gourmet billed it “Most Romanticand Exclusive Dining.” Fox 25 Boston saidof the dining there, “The most private andexclusive dining space in New England.” AndNorthshore Magazine stated in its review, “Most romantic dining.” Chronicle on WCVB-TV Channel 5 featured a wonderful segmenton the lighthouse dining experience inNewburyport.“We have a lot of locals come here but alsofrom around the world -- Japan, South Africa,India, England,” said Hyland. “People find usthrough word-of-mouth, through the Internetor media.”How the Dining Room at Rear RangeLighthouse StartedBuilt in 1873, the Newburyport HarborRear Range Lighthouse worked in tandemwith the Front Range Lighthouse 50 yardsaway to helps ships and boats navigate correctlyinto the area. Moving forward to 1961,both lighthouses were decommissioned andthe Rear Range Light was sold to a privateparty. Hyland remembers that many yearslater local developer David Hall, whose fatherowned the lighthouse, enthused about “havinglunch at the top.” The lighthouse bulb wenton over Hyland’s head and he asked Hall if hecould run the lighthouse as a dining out spot.Hall agreed, and a new light in the form of adining out spot suddenly shone well above sealevel in Newburyport. The lighthouse has alsobeen repaired and repainted through the yearsto keep things in excellent condition.Hyland’s family supported his decision toopen the dining spot.“When telling my wife, she said that anythingthat brought in money was a good ideaas we didn’t have much,” said Hyland, with alaugh. “Everything worked out well. Dininghere got more popular, I’d say about 15 yearsago. The rise of the Internet and social mediadefinitely helped.”The Newburyport Lighthouse dining outconcept reflects well upon Hyland’s overallpassion for lighthouses. Hyland’s mission withThe Lighthouse Preservation Society is tomake lighthouse preservation and its heritagea national issue. in the process, the Toledo,Ohio, native has played an important role inlighthouse history.He has spearheaded a national effort to saveAmerica’s lighthouses, aiding in the creationof the National Lighthouse Preservatioon Act.Hyland successfully lobbied for a congressionalhearing in the 1980s, leading to aCoast Guard policy review. A recipient ofthe Presidential Achievement Award from theFederal Government to preserve lighthouseheritage, The Lighthouse Preservation Societyhas been involved in more Congressional hearingsas well as conferences, the sponsorship ofNational Lighthouse Day and its celebrations,the nomination of 30 U.S. lighthouse stamps,and the raising of nearly $6 million for morethan 160 lighthouse projects.Hyland holds a Bachelors Degree in communicationsfrom Purdue University in WestLafayette, Ind., and a Masters of Divinitydegree from Gordon-Conwell TheologicalSeminary College in Hamilton, Mass. Heis currently enrolled in a doctorate programat Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary inchurch history. Now living in Dover, N.H,Hyland looks at his involvement with lighthouses-- including the dining room destinationat Rear Range Lighthouse -- as a blessing.“God gave us a passion for things,” saidHyland. “The scriptures say to commit yourway to the Lord and trust in him...
