Seabrook Station Decision Called ‘Good Sign’
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter
–––––––––––––––––
REGIONAL – Natalie Hildt Treat
thinks it may be a good sign that the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s
Atomic Safety and Licensing Board
has postponed until possibly April
its decision on further testing of the
concrete at the Seabrook Station
Nuclear Power Plant.
The ASLB’s ruling, previously
expected in January or February,
will decide if the federal regulators
will require NextEra Energy, owners
of the Seabrook Station, to conduct
additional tests on the concrete
foundations at the plant on the New
Hampshire seacoast.
Treat, who heads the small, mostly
volunteer organization which
monitors the safety issues at Seabrook
Station, said it is certainly not a “bad
sign” that the judges are taking more
time to consider the issues and data
on the degradation of the concrete.
“I’m biased, but our expert gave
the judges a lot to think about,” she
said. In addition, the judges have
asked for more information about
the concrete, she said.
The expert, Dr. Victor Saouma,
one of the world’s leading authorities
on the degradation of concrete in
dams, “gave the judges a lot of data,”
she said.
“They (the judges) asked a lot of
questions. I did not see any of them
nod off,” Treat said.
The ASLB earlier agreed to extend
NextEra’s license to operate the
plant, commissioned in 1990, for
another 20 years, until 2050. But it
is reviewing the data C-10 presented
on the concrete that is affected by
alkali-silica reaction (ASR).
C-10 said, “Our goal is to ensure
that the NRC holds plant owner
NextEra Energy Seabrook to the
highest standards of safety. We
believe the public deserves to feel
secure that the concrete will not fail
in the event of a seismic event.”
According to NextEra, “Seabrook
is located in one of the lowest hazard
zones for earthquakes according to
the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).”
The company also says the plant is
designed to withstand flooding and
snow storms.
ASR, an extraordinarily complex
problem, is a chemical reaction

keeping that
promise for the
traditional Irish
music concert
in March, by
bringing to the North Shore a band that
in his words “few have heard of, but many
will love after they hear them.”
On March 7, a Belfast-based band,
Réalta, will get your winter-weary
bones jumping and feet stomping
with what Irish Music Magazine says
is “a full-bodied pipe and whistle
extravaganza!”
Belleville Roots describes Réalta
as making “full use of the intricate
melodies and driving rhythms that
makes Irish music so loved throughout
the world.”
Performing on dueling uilleann
build a “community through music.”
It brings musical performers to the
area and raises money for needed
repairs to the venue, the 151-year-old
Belleville Congregational Church. Its
tag line is “Award winning artists in a
unique, historic venue.”
Irwin, who founded Rounder
Records and is an original organizer
of the music series, promised that
the Roots committee would not “go
crazy” after selling out the concert
with the SteelDrivers, a Grammywinning,
bluegrass band.
While the committee will seek
pipes, whistles, bodhrán, guitar, to bring in better known, more
bouzouki, doublebass and vocals, this
award-winning, the band will take the
audience on a journey of music and
song through the full range of the Irish
tradition.
Herald Scotland wrote: “Réalta carry

tunes by the scruff of the neck and
firing excitement through them like

its own musical roots, which the
group described as “a breadth of
internationally-acclaimed music --
from a cappella to zydeco with genres
in between including blues, bluegrass,
Cajun, Celtic, country folk, gospel,
Irish, jazz and world music.”

West Newbury, MA: Brown Spring Farm Saved!
Brown Spring Farm will continue to be a working farm long into the future
thanks to a collaboration between Greenbelt – Essex County’s Land Trust, the
Town of West Newbury, and a new farmer who now has a farm to call his own.
The conservation project is the culmination of a year-long effort that began
with Chris Grant of Grant Family Farm writing the sellers to inquire about buying
their farm. A Town Meeting vote in West Newbury last spring that approved

Davis, who was crowned

Davis has won more than

Wheeler is a gifted
songwriter with a beautiful
voice, but she is also a natural
story teller with a “fantastic

Irwin said what the Roots

17. Be decisive even if it
means you’ll sometimes be
wrong.
18. Stop blaming others
if it means you’ll sometimes
be wrong.
19. Be loyal and
courageous. When you look
back on your life, you’ll regret
the things you didn’t do more
than the ones you did.
20. Take good care of
those you love.
21. Don’t do anything
that wouldn’t make your
Mom proud.
Best wishes for a successful
2020. Happy New Year!
