Winter hiking trail signposting system

The winter hiking trails are marked by dark green arrows and

white snowflakes on the yellow signposts. Along the trails, they are marked

by green signs.

Be careful if you leave the signposted winter hiking trails. In snow conditions,

the summer hiking trail network and its markings are invisible, putting you at

risk of disorientation and alpine hazards and dangers.

There are two ways of using the trails –

as winter hiking trails or as combined trails

for winter hiking and cross-country skiing

(classic style or skating).

Hiking time calculation

Rule of thumb to calculate hiking time (a medium sized group of 4 to 6 people):

• around 300 metres of difference in altitude per hour for the ascent

• around 500 metres of difference in altitude per hour for the descent

• around 3 horizontal kilometres per hour

The hiking times for the differences in altitude and for the horizontal length are calculated

separately.

The figure of the shorter hiking time is halved and added to the larger figure.

SAFE snowshoe hiking.

Tips and advice for staying safe in

the mountains.

Checklists:

Tour planning:

• Chosen your tour destination in

line with your skills and ability and

the snow conditions? (Honest selfassessment;

bear in mind that many

mountain tours may be inaccessible

due to snow!)

• Thought about orientation and the

danger of avalanches?

• Check the weather forecast and

have regard to current weather

conditions!

• Checked the local conditions?

• Time planning! Leave early

– dusk starts around 4 p.m. in

winter. Note diurnal heating

(increased risk of avalanches!)

• Selection of right equipment!

• Installed the “SOS-EU-Alp” app on

your smartphone and tested it?

• Got accident and rescue costs

insurance?

Current

avalanche report for Tirol

www.lawinen.report

Equipment:

In addition to your usual winter hiking

gear (see p. 12), you need appropriate

snowshoes for your weight and height.

Depending on the route, you may also

require an avalanche transceiver, probe

and shovel!

Whatever the weather conditions,

avalanche danger level, snow

conditions and your own

familiarity with the location

(orientation), always bear in mind

that all solo snowshoe hikes are at

your own risk!

From the car park below the Gasthof Jägerwirt inn

you hike along the forest road following the signs

to Wegscheidalm. The narrow wooden bridge over

the Wegscheidbach stream is the snowshoe tour’s

first crux. After reaching the Wegscheid-Niederalm

you leave the forest road and follow the footpath to

the Kaiseralm. Here you cross the Wegscheidbach

stream a second time and follow the signs to the

Kaiseralm. After a short time the Kaiseralm comes

into view and you hike in a straight line over the

Alpine meadows in deep snow to the mountain

hut. You now go downhill again following the

road in a south-westerly direction - signposts to

Schiessling – and shortly before you come to the

Schiesslinghöfe farmhouses you turn off to the

left and follow the footpath via the Treffernhof

to the Gasthaus Jägerwirt. This is also the only

refreshment stop on this snowshoe hike.

CAUTION: this hike should only be undertaken

when there’s absolutely no risk of avalanches. The

section after the Kaiseralm heading to Schiessling

should only be attempted by hikers with

experience of avalanches and avalanche equipment.

SAFE tobogganing.

Tips and advice for staying safe in

the mountains.

Tobogganing is a fun activity for everyone. But it is not risk-free!

Learn how to do it right.

1. Be considerate towards other

tobogganists

Never endanger or harm others.

2. Observe track closures and

warnings

Make sure that the run is open for

tobogganing before you set off.

Keep informed about the route and

the condition of all toboggan runs

you intend to use.

3. Use quality gear

A high-quality toboggan, protective

helmet, sturdy footwear. Plastic

bobs and other plastic trays are

prohibited for safety reasons.

4. Ascend on the right-hand side

and in an orderly queue

Only cross the toboggan run in

unobstructed spots that give you a

clear view of the run.

5. Stay in control, keep an eye

on the run and maintain a safe

distance

Adapt your speed and behaviour to

your own skill level, the toboggan

run, the snow/ice/weather

conditions and the number of other

users.

6. Draw attention to yourself

Warn other users who are

ascending the run inattentively

(ring your bell, shout out). In

the dark, wear a headlamp and

reflective clothing.

7. Wait for your group or

companion in unobstructed

spots with a clear view of the run

Make sure that your group is

complete. Never stop in narrow,

obstructed spots.

8. Tobogganing on ski slopes is

dangerous and prohibited

There is a high risk of collision

with skiers. Toboggan tracks

that freeze over night, compromise

the quality of the slopes

9. No dogs

It is very difficult to keep dogs

under control during the ascent

and descent. Toboggan runs tend to

be narrow, and there is a high risk

of collision with toboggan riders

on their way down.

10. Do not toboggan under the

influence of alcohol or drugs

Intoxicants lower your ability to

react quickly and make you less

able to assess risks accurately.

All toboggan riders must provide

first aid and identify themselves in

the event of an accident.

SAFE cross-country skiing.

Tips and advice for staying safe in

the mountains.

Cross-country skiing is a healthy nature sport providing great

opportunities for fitness, experiences and community. The following

recommendations are intended to help make cross-country skiing safer,

nature-friendly and conflict-free.

1. Consideration for others

All cross-country skiers must

always conduct themselves in a way

that does not endanger or harm

others.

2. Signage, direction and technique

Observe all markings and signals

(safety signs). Always use trails and

slopes in the specified direction

and with the specified technique.

3. Track and trail selection

On trails with two or more tracks,

use the right-hand track. Groups of

cross-country skiers must use the

right-hand track in a queue. When

free-styling, keep to the right-hand

side of the trail.

4. Overtaking

Overtake on the right or left. The

skier in front of you does not need

to make way but should consider

doing so if it is safe.

5. Oncoming traffic

When passing an oncoming crosscountry

skier, all parties must keep

to the right. The descending crosscountry

skier has precedence.

6. Pole safety

Keep your poles close to your body

when you overtake another trail

user, when you are being overtaken

and when you pass an oncoming

trail user.

7. Appropriate speed

All cross-country skiers must adapt

their speed and their behaviour to

their own skills, the terrain, the

density of traffic and the visibility.

This is especially important on

descents. Always keep a safe

distance to the skier in front of

you. Always be prepared to drop to

the ground to prevent a collision.

8. Avoiding obstructions

Leave the cross-country trail or

slope when pausing. Clear the

cross-country trail or slope as

quickly as possible after a fall.

9. Provision of aid

All trail users are obliged to help

others in the event of an accident.

10. Duty of identification

In the event of an accident, all

present parties must provide their

personal details, regardless of

whether they were involved in the

accident or witnesses and whether

they were responsible or not.

What else

does the Wilder Kaiser region have to offer

in winter? Would you rather ski until the lifts

close for the day or try another activity

Ski touring

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

You can put your ice-skating skills to

the test at Going ice rink at the edge

of the forest near the fire station. This

paradise for families and fans of ice

sports lies surrounded by forests and

on the banks of the Going Hausbach

stream.

You can take a few turns from around

mid-December to around early March

(depending on the weather) at the

Salveneisarena ice rink in Söll with

free entry. Evenings may be available

upon request. The required skates are

available for hire from nearby Sporthaus

Edinger.

There are five places in which visitors

to the region can enjoy playing this

popular social sport in the fresh air.

Don’t miss out on giving it a go,

whether you are an amateur or a pro!

Ski touring allows you to experience

the Wilder Kaiser mountain range in

a new light. The guided tours offered

within the scope of our weekly

programme are perfect for beginners

and everyone who does not know the

area well. For individual ski touring

experiences, we recommend hiring

our state-certified, native mountain

and ski guides. If you set out on

your own, make sure to plan your

route with your personal abilities and

requirements in mind, pay attention

to the current snow, weather and

avalanche conditions and check

the relevant information before your

ascent and descent.

Lean back and enjoy the surroundings

on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through

the snow-covered landscape: a wonderful

and peaceful way to take in the

beautiful scenery of the region. A horsedrawn

sleigh ride at dusk can be a great

end to a busy day full of sports, tasting

the snowy air from underneath a pile of

warm fur blankets.

At the KaiserBad Ellmau, the “Ellmi’s

Friends” indoor adventure pool

and sauna offer a whole day of fun

for all the family. Situated at the

foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountain

range in Tirol, the large swimming

pool complex offers something for

everyone. From the indoor adventure

pool, parents and children can swim

directly into the heated outdoor pool,

where the water is a comfortable

30°C. The children’s area has been

generously extended to include

numerous fun and play areas. “Ellmi’s

Friends” guarantees great fun for little

adventurers.

Once you’re done splashing around,

why not work off some energy in

the climbing hall? Whether you’re a

beginner or seasoned pro looking for

somewhere to train, the newly built

indoor climbing centre provides the

ideal conditions and plenty of space

for you to hone your skills. The centre

provides a climbing area of 805 m²

at a height of up to 16 m and a floor

space of 173 m². It features around 100

routes varying in difficulty from level

3 to 10. Of these routes, 35 lines can

be climbed simultaneously. Safety is

of utmost importance to the centre,

which is why it is equipped with two

Toppas safety machines. It also boasts

a small bouldering and warm-up area.

Tip: Try the taster climbing session

supervised by the “Kaiser mountain guides”

at the KaiserBad Ellmau. You can find all the

information at www.wilderkaiser.info/events

or from the tourist information office.

Spa and sauna

Keeping your body and soul in

harmony with the elements is an

essential way of boosting your health

and relaxation. What could be more

pleasant than spending some time

looking after your own well-being in

a beautifully tranquil environment?

The wellness area features a stone pine

panorama sauna, salt steam bath and

herbal steam bath for deeply soothing

experiences; the infrared cabins,

some of which are suffused with salt

mist, offer complete tranquillity. And

the enlarged log cabin sauna with its

crushed ice machine is an absolute

treat. The relaxation areas, which

include the Kaiser terrace, hay barn

and sauna bar, have something for

every sauna aficionado.

i RICHTLINIEN FÜR DIE BENÜTZUNG VON SKIPÄSSEN
