Welcome to our January 2020 Issue 

Happy New Year to all our readers. 

Calling all business owners, with a new year on the horizon we are looking at our 

magazine and its viability in the modern digital world. Having seen two local publications 

cease producing hard copy due to lack of support during the past year we are considering 

our future. We run and have always run this as a as a community facility for local 

businesses to showcase themselves. However due to a change in personal circumstances 

we cannot continue making a loss month after month. We have taken the sad decision to 

put the prices up slightly to try and cover the cost of printing. 

We continue to be the only printed hand delivered publication across Gillingham & 

Shaftesbury but in order for this to remain the case we need to know how you want us to 

advertise you. We therefore need to address your requirements to avoid being forced 

into becoming just another online medium. 

Spare a thought for Ward Goodman (pg 19) and Money Management Matters (pg 4 

below) who have been busy over the Christmas festivities working on business accounts 

and personal tax returns. With the deadline at the end of January please contact them 

early if you need help.

Web Design Agency, Dorset Tech 

Expands with First High Street Office 

Dorset Tech, the superhero themed social enterprise offering web design solutions, has 

opened a new office in Gillingham. 

The launch of the office comes at a time of unprecedented growth for Dorset Tech, who 

in just nine months have expanded from a team of just three to a team of 14, with more 

than 300 active customers. This growth is a result of a number of changes at the web 

design and app development agency. This restructure has, says Dorset Tech, delivered an 

improved service for its growing client portfolio, which ranges from start-ups to 

international household names, and includes Monkey World – Dorset’s Ape Rescue 

Centre. 

Dorset Tech chose to open its new office in Gillingham as a focal point for the 

community. Gillingham is the most northerly town in Dorset and has grown rapidly over 

the past 20 years, attracting a variety of new industries. 

The Gillingham office, located on the high street, will be led by Chris Ryu, who founded 

Dorset Tech in March. He started his career as a Mercedes-Benz technician before 

working in marketing management roles for various automotive brands including Poole 

Audi and Yeovil Audi. He has 15 years of software development experience. As a social 

entrepreneur and STEM ambassador, Chris founded his own children’s STEM education 

centre back in 2016. 

He will be supported by wife Emma as office manager. The agency’s expansion has 

created three local jobs with a further three expected next year. 

Founder Chris Ryu said: “The key to our rapid growth is our ethos. Our industry is known 

for smoke and mirrors, high-profit margins and cutting corners. As a social enterprise, we 

aim to make award-winning custom websites and apps affordable to all. We greatly 

reduce our already competitive rates for fellow social enterprises and good causes, then 

donate a portion of our profits back to the community.” 

Alongside the office there's also a superhero 

themed shop with a range of merchandise, 

natural mineral products and STEM education 

toys. As a social enterprise, the agency has 

decided to donate 10% of all sales to local 

causes, with Monkey World being the first 

beneficiary.

Sue Warren – Interior decorator and designer 

My first recollection of doing any decorating was when I was aged three. 

I picked up a wallpaper scraper in the dining room and promptly wielded it – all 

over the sideboard! My parents were ‘over‐whelmed’ by my efforts but not in 

an appreciative way! Thankfully, I learnt my lesson and grew up ‐ to become a 

teacher, of PE and Art (no marking!). One task I gave my students was to 

produce a market stall displaying hand‐made ‘realistic‐looking’ food items. This 

display then spread down the corridor and on to the noticeboards, which we 

transformed into Christmas shop windows, complete with full‐size silhouettes of 

shoppers. This was so much fun that I started dreaming of one day becoming an 

Interior Designer. 

Several years later, I moved to Bournemouth and it was here that my landlady 

allowed me to decorate my room. Neither of us looked back. She ended up 

having her whole house decorated ‐ for a very reasonable fee and I decided 

that the time was right to make my dream come true.

A Day at the Races by Rik Lonsdale 

‘You’re looking very dapper today, Mr Johnson.’ 

Johnny Johnson smiled. He was pleased the young woman serving breakfast remembered his name. 

‘Thanks very much… err…’ 

‘Claire, it’s Claire, Mr Johnson.’ 

‘Ah, yes, of course, Claire. Thank you, I like to look the part, you know.’ 

He was wearing his best tweed jacket with a tweed tie over brown corduroy trousers and polished 

brown brogues. 

‘Where is it today then?’ said Claire, filling his cup with tea. 

‘Cheltenham today, beautiful racecourse. Very popular.’ 

‘Cheltenham, fancy, that sounds posh.’ 

‘Have you ever been racing... er’ 

‘Claire. No, I’ve never been, you’ll have to take me one day, Mr Johnson.’ 

‘You wouldn’t want to go today; it’ll be very cold.’ 

After breakfast Johnny donned his sheepskin coat and trilby hat and headed for the entrance. 

‘Mr Johnson, would you like coffee before you go?’ 

Coffee sounded and smelled good. He had time. 

‘That would be very welcome. It looks a bit chilly out there.’ 

Johnny took a newspaper from his coat to study form in the racing pages. 

‘Have you any tips for me?’ said Claire, putting a mug of coffee and a plate of biscuits beside him. 

Johnny tapped the side of his nose. ‘Between you and me, I rather fancy Bombadier Bill in the 2:30. 

Should romp home.’ 

He took out a pencil to circle one or two race picks, but it was blunt. I’ll just have to remember, he 

thought. The chair was comfortable, and Johnny relaxed and closed his eyes. 

A gentle rocking of his shoulder woke him. 

‘It’s lunchtime, Mr Johnson, there’s soup and a sandwich ready.’ 

‘I’ll miss the first race,’ he said, ‘but it’s always a novice’s race.’ 

After lunch Johnny again donned his coat and hat. He tried to push the entrance door open, but it 

wouldn’t budge. 

‘You need to pull it, Mr Johnson,’ called Claire. 

‘Of course, thank you, er… miss,’ and Johnny pulled the door open and stepped outside into the cold 

air. 

Johnny walked down the long garden path, past lawns and flower beds, to the wrought iron gate. He 

pulled it open and stepped on to the pavement. He stared in confusion at the traffic hurtling by, at the 

people rushing along. The noise crashed into his ears. He didn’t hear the ‘excuse me’ and ‘mind out’ of 

people squeezing past. 

Someone jostled him. ‘Get out of the way, old man,’ they called as they rushed on. 

Johnny turned and saw the peaceful garden beyond the gate. He needed to get out of this chaos that 

surrounded him. He walked past the flower beds and lawns. It seemed to be a hotel. He walked into 

reception. 

‘Hello Mr Johnson,’ said the receptionist, ‘how was 

Cheltenham?’ 

Johnny paused a moment, looking confused, then 

remembered his manners and took off his hat. 

‘Very good, wonderful racecourse you know, bit chilly though.’ 

‘Would you like a nice cup of tea?’ 

‘That would be very kind, thank you, miss…’ 

‘Claire, it’s Claire Mr Johnson.’

Fancy a New Hobby for a New Year? 

Have you ever fancied writing a novel, or felt you had a story in you? What is 

stopping you? Maybe you prefer writing short stories for fun and family but thought 

they might be good enough to sell? Jump into 2020 with a new hobby. 

North Dorset is teaming with unknown talent and you could be one of them. 

Scribblers Writing Group is a workshop for writers of all genres who want to write but 

need the confidence to try. They meet monthly in Milton on Stour over a cuppa and 

biscuit where they focus on an aspect of writing and have a go at developing ideas. 

During the month weekly prompts keep members connected and focused. If you fancy

If you feel you need a bit more support and focused learning then why not join local 

author Della Galton at her weekly classes also held in Milton on Stour. Each lesson

St Mary Gillingham Scout Group need your help! 

Over the last year, after more than 15 years of fundraising effort, 

Gillingham Scout Group have managed to finish construction of the 

new Scout Community Hall building in Milton-on-Stour. To really help 

complete the project we are now making plans to develop the outside 

space, creating a play area suitable for all ages. 

We are using crowdfunding in association with the Aviva Community 

Fund to try to raise £2,500 to enable us to convert the muddy field 

outside into an extension of the hall. Our vision is to build an 

accessible decked area just outside the hall, leading onto a grassed area enclosed by hedges and 

fencing. The area will be available for use by the whole community for playing, learning and 

socialising with friends and neighbours. 

To help turn our dream into reality we need the support of our community; the deadline for the 

crowdfunding is 20 th December 2019. If supporters pledge £20 their name can be entered into our 

book of donors which will be located in the hall. For a pledge of £250 you’ll be able to use the hall 

and outdoor space for 3 hours for free and for £500 you will get your name on a wall plaque in the 

community hall plus use of the hall and outdoor space for a day. It’s easy to donate – just follow
