1. Introduction. Imagine a world with ‘Money as<br />
a thing of <strong>the</strong> past’. With <strong>the</strong> clock wound back<br />
all of 70 years so <strong>the</strong>re are only a few<br />
computers again.<br />
The current worldwide recession (I share <strong>the</strong><br />
increasing views of many commentators that it is a<br />
Second Great Depression that may last years if<br />
unchecked by a world government initiative) started<br />
life as <strong>the</strong> tritely and glibly misnamed ‘<strong>credit</strong> crunch’<br />
back in September 2007. Banks stopped giving out<br />
vast amounts of cheap <strong>credit</strong> – around that time <strong>the</strong><br />
long term bubble in massive and escalating property<br />
prices on both sides of <strong>the</strong> Atlantic, also burst.<br />
Since <strong>the</strong>n world stock markets have collapsed in a<br />
series of drastic falls, notably in September 2008, a<br />
year after <strong>the</strong> start of this ‘<strong>credit</strong> crunch’ cum Second<br />
Great Depression. Now <strong>the</strong> world and its leaders are<br />
both apportioning blame as ever, often quite wildly,<br />
and grasping onto straws to find ways to get <strong>the</strong> apple<br />
cart of <strong>the</strong> world economy upright and working again.<br />
Was it all greedy bankers’ fault – or was it greedy<br />
homeowners? They ask.<br />
