A very happy New Year to you all! I hope the
Christmas festivities went well and you are all
geared up for a successful and healthy 2020. I was
honoured to judge the beautiful lanterns at the
Special thanks are due to Barry Moxley and his team
from Beaconsfield Rotary Club, along with the sponsors,
without whom this event could not go ahead.
It’s all about health and well-being in this issue, with
a focus on your skin and what products we are
putting on it (p18) We also have advice from Your
Doctor and Seed Wellness regarding menopausal
With VE day approaching in May the town council
SCHOOL NEWS
Fundraising in
memory of student
Maddy Murrell
Students at Beaconsfield High School
are fundraising to build a garden within
the school grounds in memory of Maddy
Murrell, a Becky High student who passed
away after a battle with cancer last May.
The fundraising target for the garden is
£50,000, £16,000 of which has already
been raised through events like the Maddy’s
Memory student dance show, which two of
her friends organised, raising over £2,000.
The garden will be a space where students
can enjoy being together to talk and
share what’s going on in their lives and to
remember Maddy.
If you would like to help the school
reach their target, you can either
LOCAL BUSINESS
Employing people
with Autism
Meet Joe Lawrence, 15 years old.
Joe’s father, Alan, came to A. J Dunlop’s
garage earlier this year to ask if they
would be prepared to offer Joe a work
experience placement. Alan had seen
his company listed in the Bucks Learning
trust website.
Alex Dunlop, owner of the garage, told him
he would be happy to. Alan informed Alex
that Joe was on the Autistic Spectrum, so he
invited Joe into the garage so that he could
make his own assessment.
Joe came to the garage and was shown
around and it was quite obvious that this
young man was very enthusiastic. He
introduced him to the lads and Alex knew
within 5 minutes that he would take Joe on.
Joe carried out his work experience in May
and really became engaged with the garage
and the staff.
This is important to Joe as with his Autism
comes the awkwardness of social situations.
He was able to join in the banter, chatting to
people he had only known a few hours and
also eating food with them that he had never
tried before due to sensory issues.’
Alex would like to thank his staff for engaging
with Joe. They don’t hold back when it
comes to life and the issues around it, but
they warmed to Joe straight away and were
delighted with Joe’s attitude to work. He was
easy to work with.
Here is a paragraph from a letter Alan
wrote to Alex Dunlop after Joe’s week
with A. J Dunlop.
‘Everybody at A J Dunlop had welcomed my
son and made him feel really comfortable
and made him feel liked he belonged there.
Alex would like other company owners to
see the success he has had with Joe who had
autism. Alex’s hope is that other employers
will take on a young people like Joe and give
them the opportunity to shine.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Save our Green
Belt - News from
Beaconsfield Society
The main local issue on everyone’s minds
continues to be the threat to our green belt
and The Beaconsfield Society’s Save Our
Green Belt Campaign continues apace.
After the third and final consultation over the
summer, in September the Local Plan was
submitted to the Planning Inspectors for
“examination”. The Planning Inspectors have
recently raised many questions with the district
councils concerning the preparation of the Plan
and are following up on the councils’ failure so
far to make public full copies of all consultation
responses. The Councils have been pressing for
an early “Hearing” of the Plan but they must first
respond to the Inspectors’ questions.
We are raising funds to pay for this, so please
support our campaign by donating towards the
cost of the experts’ fees. You can donate via our
website at http://www.beaconsfieldnow.org.uk/
save-our-green-belt/save-our-green-belt-donatenow/or
on our JustGiving page at https://www.
justgiving.com/crowdfunding/beaconsfieldsogb
12
Once the Inspectors are content with the councils’
answers, the Inspectors will draw up a list of
“Matters, Issues and Questions” to be examined
at the Hearing which could last 2 – 3 weeks. At
that Hearing, which is rather like a court case,
The Beaconsfield Society’s barrister and Planning
Consultants will attend to put forward our strong
case against the Plan.
Donations are urgently needed as the councils
are pressing ahead with the Plan rather than
waiting to allow the Unitary Council to deal with
this in a strategic, holistic, county-wide way from
April 2020.
The Local Plan would release c. 111 hectares of
green belt for development of c. 1600 homes,
20,000sqm of “employment” space and a
travellers’ site. With the district councils’ own
experts predicting rises in travel times and
congestion of over 400% and increase in the
districts’ carbon footprint of 21%, the Local Plan
is nothing but deleterious for the area. Moreover,
many developers are pressing for the release of
even more green belt land in Beaconsfield for
development. The Local Plan would also see
Altons Carpark zoned for retail use. Even the
Town Hall, Beacon Centre, garden centre, and
Warwick Road carpark are listed as suitable by
the councils for further development, as are car
parks in Gerrards Cross.
Please look out for up-dates on our web-site
www.thebeaconsfieldsociety.org.uk and our
Supper & Quiz Night coming up in February.
HEALTH NEWS
We eat to live and
not live to eat.
Do you find yourself reaching for
‘naughty’ food in the cupboard when
you’re feeling down and depressed?
Wouldn’t it be great if we could eat a balanced
diet all the time, eat our five fruit and veg a
day and regular meals with the right amount
of protein, carbs and fats. But in reality with the
pace of life that’s been set these days and huge
stresses we face, it’s very difficult!
There is no doubt I have a sensitive digestive
system, maybe it’s due to that trip to Mexico
when I was 21 and suffered terrible salmonella
poisoning. Or it could be the stress I put myself
under. I’ve made the choice to cut out gluten
from my diet because it doesn’t agree with me,
I’ve had the test for coeliac and I am in the clear
on that front.
Watching what I eat all the time, is depressing
in itself however, so when I met Laura from LM
nutrition I was delighted when she offered to give
me a comprehensive consultation to address my
eating habits and patterns.
I had to fill out an extensive form, it took
commitment and dedication, but it is worth it
I assure you. She also made me keep a food
diary. She kept it simple, just two days during the
week eating normal food (including the naughty
food) and one day at the weekend.
She gleaned a lot from my eating habits from
those 3 days. I did try and keep what I thought
was a sensible and healthy diet. Well of course
you would wouldn’t you, being assessed by an
expert qualified nutritionist!
But as I found out, my so-called healthy breakfast
consisting of gf porridge lots of fruit including
bananas and mixed berries, combined with apple
juice plus coffee was actually so wrong for me.
Stress levels, eating at irregular times, and lack of
sleep were also affecting my gut.
Laura said, “Blood-glucose refers to the amount
of sugar circulating in the blood, and for sustained
energy it’s really important to keep that amount
as level as possible. Symptoms of imbalance
include fatigue, headaches, irritability, food
cravings, anxiety, low mood and poor sleep –
it can also affect gut health.”
I know Iam going to have to change a lot of
things in my life, but with small steps and Laura’s
guidance, I hope I can achieve better eating
habits, a less stressful life and more laughs and
enjoyment. If you know you need help with eating,
then get in touch with Laura.
HEALTH NEWS
The history of
cosmetics and
skincare
I met up with Carine Evans
who has been a trained
holistic therapist since 2009
and runs, ‘Energetic Healing’.
She manages client’s health and well-being
naturally and offers treatments to help
strengthen their immune systems, overcome
lots of ailments and also balance hormones.
Carine enlightened me on the alarming
history of cosmetics and skincare...
Egyptian, Greeks and Romans used skin care and
cosmetics way back in time using amazing plant
oils, milk honey and beeswax. However lead was
one of the main ingredients in the make-up.
In the 18th century when men and women used
a whitening mixture on their faces this was made
also from lead, vinegar and horse manure! It
inflamed their eyes, weakened teeth, caused
hair loss and even killed heavy users.
Victorians used ammonia on their skin, mercury
as an eye treatment and arsenic to remove
pimples and clear the face of freckles and a tan!
In the 1920s radium was supposed to energise
the cells of the skin and eliminates impurities
giving a charming glow of delicate colour!
Cosmetics today
There are 82,000 chemicals used in the
personal-care market. One in eight of these
are toxic, including known carcinogens and
hormone disruptors.
80% of beauty products contain these toxic
ingredients. The average person uses 12
products a day which is 168 chemicals
applied to the skin daily. The most trusted
brand contains on average 16 woman
disrupting chemicals in every product.
Quite alarming statistics! See ‘What’s in a bottle’
on page 19 for a list of all the common chemicals
to look out for.
Do not be green washed!
Many products have labels on them saying,
organic, natural or paraben free, however to
be absolutely sure check the ingredients as you
may find other nasty chemicals in their place.
How can companies get away with this?
Many of the chemicals in products these days are
considered safe in small amounts in the lotions.
The problem is that our bodies store some of
these chemicals, this is called ‘body burden.’
we are unable to filter out the chemicals. This is
called ‘body burden’ We end up storing a mix
of potentially toxic chemicals in our cells,
particularly in the fatty tissue.
Keep healthy this Winter
Carine’s winter tips for soft and glowing skin.
Keep hydrated – water is the best liquid to drink to
flush out toxins and encourage collagen production.
Eat well – sugary food and alcohol have an
ageing effects on the skin. Eat nuts particularly
walnuts, almonds and Brazil nuts and plenty of
brightly coloured berries.
Massage the muscles on your skin. Carine’s
face lift massage works wonders on increasing
skin cell renewal and giving the face a glow
and toned appearance. Editor: we highly
recommend Carine’s facelift massage! Gave
the face a glowing youthful feel and extremely
relaxing
Use lukewarm water and not hot to clean your
skin, moisturise on wet skin, exfoliate weekly, and
don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun.
Deceptive in winter, it’s the UVA ageing rays that
cause a lot of damage.
To book a treatment
with Carine call on
Banish
those bags!
Do this exercise daily to
improve circulation around
the eyes & deal with puffiness
and bags around the eyes.
• Open your eyes as wide as possible
• Place your fingers on your eyebrows
• Try to close your lower eye lids 15 times daily
Feel it in the muscles underneath the eyes
HEALTH NEWS
Menopause
By Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa
(Your Doctor)
The menopause is the
phase in a woman’s life
cycle where her periods stop,
and she becomes unable to
have children.
This starts with the body producing less
oestrogen and eggs less regularly. For most
people, this occurs between the ages of 45
and 55. The symptoms can vary from woman to
woman. While symptoms may seem worrying
to some, there are effective ways to combat
or reduce them so they do not have such a
significant impact.
“What is perimenopause?”
Perimenopause is when the ovaries produce
less oestrogen and patients can get a variety
of symptoms including lower sex drive, breast
tenderness, vaginal dryness, mood swings,
fatigue and irregular periods. On average
perimenopause symptoms last for four
years before you start menopause, but some
women can have symptoms for up to 10 years.
On average perimenopause starts from the
mid-forties onwards.
“What is HRT, and is it safe?”
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the
main therapy available for women going
through the menopause. HRT can relieve many
of the common symptoms of menopause as
well as help prevent osteoporosis - a bone
condition which women going through this
phase are more at risk to. HRT is also protective
to your heart if taken for less than 10 years and
before the age of 60. There are many different
forms and treatments, however HRT is not the
right treatment for everyone as there can be
strong side-effects and the benefits have to be
balanced with increased risks of breast cancer,
cardiovascular disease and DVT’s. For more
information and to find out if you are eligible,
consult your GP.
“I’ve put on a lot of weight since starting the
menopause and am often bloated, what can I
do to help that?”
The hormonal changes of menopause might
make you more likely to gain weight around
your abdomen than around your hips and
thighs, but hormonal changes alone don’t
necessarily cause menopause weight gain.
Ageing, lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise,
unhealthy eating and poor sleep, can all
contribute to menopause weight gain.
Muscle mass typically diminishes with age, while
fat increases. Loss of muscle mass decreases the
rate at which your body uses calories, which can
make it more challenging to maintain a healthy
weight. If you continue to eat as you always
have and don’t increase your physical activity,
you’re likely to gain weight.
“Now that I’m going through the
menopause, do I need to worry about
contraception?”
Technically if you are still having periods, even
if irregular, you can still get pregnant. It is very
unlikely that you will as the quality of eggs
are low. I wouldn’t advise you take hormonal
contraception as this may confuse matters further.
Try barrier methods instead such as condoms.
“How will I know when it’s over?”
In the UK, the average age of the menopause
is 51. If you are a woman over 50 and you have
not had a period for 12 months, then it is over.
Under 50, 24 months of no periods indicates
menopause. You will also notice that the
symptoms you have suffered have stopped or
are improving.
COMMUNITY NEWS
Is living in your
own home getting
a bit much?
Living in your own home can become
increasingly difficult as time goes by.
Maintaining your home, the daily chores,
the bills, cooking meals - it can become
overwhelming, not to mention lonely.
There are options available… read on to
find out more
Care visits
These enable you to stay in your home,
provide a bit of company and provide as
much practical help as you are willing/
able to pay for. Of course this service
is scheduled, so you will only receive
visits when timetabled and building a
relationship with whomever you are letting
into your home can be hard if you don’t
always get the same carers.
Sheltered Housing
Flats are available to buy with wardens
usually available weekdays during office
hours, with pull-cords for emergency cover.
Sometimes there are communal facilities,
but social events are usually up to the
residents to organise, so are dependent
on who is living there at the time. When
it’s time to move on, you have to hope the
housing market is buoyant to release the
money tied up in your property and there are
usually sinking funds to pay into while you
are resident too.
Supported Housing
An often unheard of option! They offer more
support, social interaction and flexibility
than sheltered housing but still assure your
independence, giving you the best of both
worlds!
recommended to help you. Outside your
own front door regular staff are on call as much
as 24 hours a day (not all homes offer overnight
cover) and there are alarm systems too.
Home-cooked meals are served twice-daily
in a communal dining room and there are
small kitchenettes for preparing breakfast
and snacks. Help is provided with cleaning
and laundry so you have more time for you.
Regular entertainment is organised in a
communal lounge by both residents and staff
and varies from games to singers to arts and
crafts – there is no limit to the possibilities
and participation is entirely optional.
So you can have the benefit of your own
home, but with flexibility, security, company
and all of the household chores taken care
of – guaranteed!
Maybe it’s time to make a new start for an
easier, more enjoyable future!
It is also worth noting that these homes
often also offer respite care or guest stay
opportunities, so if you would like a little
extra support whilst recovering from an
operation, or would like some company
while family members are away, these types
of homes might be an excellent solution.
Rooms can be offered furnished, so you
just need a suitcase, then you can move in
and relax!
www.austenmead.org.uk
Apartments are rented and fees are fully
inclusive, so it’s easy to budget and you can
leave with just a month’s notice. You can
furnish and decorate them as you please
and stay as long as you like! If you need
extra help as time goes by carers can be
Music & health go
hand- in- hand
Did you also know that music and learning an
instrument like the piano can really help adults
improve their mental health and mindfulness?
We all struggle to some degree, and music
can help with issues like stress, anxiety, aid
better sleep and increase motivation to name
but a few.
Reduce stress
It has long been suggested that music can
help reduce levels of stress. We all know that
meditative music does exactly this; soothes the mind
and induces relaxation. If listening to music can be
an effective way to cope with stress, then learning
to play the piano can be just as effective. Clearing
your mind of all your daily worries and focusing on
just the music, takes you out of this mindset and into
a calm and more relaxed one. You not only have a
clearer mind but have a greater sense of satisfaction
having achieved something too. If you don’t believe
us, give it a try!
Improve sleep
In a recent sleep study carried out on a group
of adults, one group was asked to listen to 45
minutes of music before bed for 3 weeks, the other
group was given no aids at all. The study found
that participants who had listened to music had
significantly better sleep quality than those who had
received no intervention. I know that at some point
in everyone’s life, they will have suffered from some
form of insomnia or sleep disorder. To think that
relaxing classical music can be a safe, effective, and
an affordable remedy to this issue is a real triumph!
Whoever says, oh I had too much sleep thanks, I
don’t need anymore! We have the answer people!
Start the New Year with more music in your life.
Take up a new hobby, learn to play the piano or go
back to it -give it a go Nothing to lose, everything
to gain!
Harrolds Opticians
Before we are inundated with all the ‘New
Year...New You’ health campaigns, give
a thought to probably the most precious
of your senses...your sight. There are no
drastic changes needed to give your eyes
the best chance of great vision through
the years - no gym classes or extreme
diets needed - just a little TLC.
Firstly, eat a good diet rich in green vegetables
health; and eggs for lutein and vitamin A. Eat a
variety of colours when it comes to fruit and veg
to maximize your vitamins and aim for a least 2
portions of fish a week.
If you find you are getting eyestrain, headaches
or blurring of your vision when driving or
Don’t wait for a reminder that your next eye test
is due if you have any symptoms like watery
eyes or you are concerned about anything. Any
changes in your eyes or vision are best identified
early so any necessary treatment or update to
your glasses or contact lenses can be completed
early on.
With the advances in contact lens materials, drier
atmospheres and central eating need not be
a problem. There are glasses lenses designed
specifically to help with the glare of night driving.
These lenses have a special contrast enhancing
filter and can help not only in the dark but in
foggy conditions too. There are lenses designed
to give you a greater range for all your electronic
work and hobbies. Isn’t it annoying when you
can read a book with your glasses but can’t see
the PC screen or a recipe book on the worktop
without leaning in closer to read it? These lenses
are not as complex as varifocals and can make
your vision feel as good as it did 5 years ago.
So, you can make an easy positive change now
before the New Year: have an eye test.
New Year’s
Resolutions
- Making a Will
Happy New Year everyone! If you’ve made your
new year’s resolutions, I’ll wager, finally making
those Wills you’ve always put off, does not
feature, but now is as good a time as any to
think about such things.
Making a Will allows you to leave clear instructions
about how your estate is to be distributed, choosing
those who are to receive from you and those you
want to administer that all for you (your executors).
Most importantly, perhaps, you take control for your
loved ones.
According to one source, it has been suggested
that more than half of parents in the UK with children
under 18 have not made a Will. A Will can be used
to nominate who should look after your children if
the worst happens to you by appointing a guardian.
If both parents die without having appointed a
guardian, it may be left to the courts to decide with
whom your child will spend their most formative
years. At worst it may lead to family disputes at a
time already fraught with emotional distress.
A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to
sort everything out when you die. Without a Will, the
process can be more time consuming and stressful.
Finally, a Will can help reduce the amount of
inheritance tax that might be payable on the value
of the property and money you leave behind.
LEGAL NEWS
Arbitration – everyone can have their
cake and eat it…
In late 2019 Paul Hollywood and his former
wife decided to settle the financial aspects of
their divorce through arbitration. Contrary to
perception there is nothing unusual about this.
Arbitration is open to anyone, not just celebrities
or the wealthy, and is increasingly popular with
many couples.
The reason is simple – the court system is hugely
overloaded and it can take up to a year to get a
hearing with a Judge who decides ‘who gets what’.
A year’s wait means a further 12 months with legal
costs soaring and neither party able to get on with
their lives or make decisions eg. in relation to children.
Such time weighs very heavily on most people. But
with arbitration you can avoid having to wait.
weeks. The process is more streamlined, friendlier
and an enormous cost saving to both parties, but the
real saving is the emotional strain that is avoided by a
quick determination.
Whilst you do need to pay for your arbitrator, that cost
is shared between you and is swiftly eroded by the
convenience and speed of the process. So actually,
Paul Hollywood and his former wife’s decision to go
to arbitration makes a lot of sense - end the matter
swiftly, with the help of an expert in the area of law,
cost effectively and without prolonged delay and
then move on with life.
Be-GIN the New
Year with a Griffiths
Gin Tour
Friends and businesses of Beaconsfield
Together, had the pleasure of a night in
at Griffiths Brother Distillery on a bitter
cold night in December. Situated round
the back of the Hit and Miss Inn in Penn
Street, you would not expect to find a
gin distillery and an intimate, dimly lit and
slightly cavern-feel bar in the middle of a
business park.
Every Thursday night the brothers hold distillery
tours and a chance to sample gins from their
unique gin menu. Our intimate tour was led
by Griffiths brother - Alex who captivated our
attention all evening. He gave us a little history
on gin, how their business began and how using
cold distillation they have crafted their award
winning gins. He also showed us the little
machine that saves his fingers from zesting
300 oranges and a fabulous machine that fills
up 500 bottles of gin every hour and a half.
W
th
Br
We were shown Aretha, Amy and Roberta, no
not Alex’s girlfriends but his rotary evaporators -
all named after famous female singers! We
actually witnessed the process of cold distillation
from Roberta which was fascinating.
If you would like an evening with a difference in
January or February, then a Griffiths Brother Gin
Tour could be just the ticket. It’s a great place
to bring a group of friends and make it a social
gathering - definitely an evening you’ll remember
for years to come.
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Serves: 12
Ingredients
others?
•150g plain flour
Chocolate s’mores
•25g Green & Black’s Organic Fairtrade Cocoa
•60g Lurpak Cook’s Range Baking
•60g Waitrose Fairtrade Light Brown Muscovado Sugar
•70g golden syrup
•6 Waitrose Pink & White Marshmallows, cut in half
•50g Waitrose Seriously Rich Dark or Seriously Creamy
Milk Chocolate
•1 tbsp Cooks’ Homebaking Freeze Dried Strawberries
•1 tbsp Heston from Waitrose Popping Candy
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180ªC, gas mark 5. Place the flour,
cocoa, Lurpak and sugar in a food processor and whizz
until well blended. Add the syrup and whizz again to make
a smooth dough.
2. Roll the dough out between 2 sheets of baking parchment
then, using a 5cm heart-shaped cutter, stamp out 24 shapes.
Transfer to a large parchment-lined baking sheet and bake
for 10 minutes.
3. Carefully lift 12 of the biscuits onto a wire rack and reserve.
Place a marshmallow half onto each of the remaining biscuits
and return to the oven for 1–2 minutes until melted. Sandwich
the reserved biscuits on top of each marshmallow and leave
to cool – they may need nudging back into position if they
start to slip.
4. Meanwhile, gently melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set
over a pan of simmering water. Spread a teaspoonful of melted
chocolate on top of each sandwich and sprinkle with the dried
strawberries and popping candy. Leave to set completely.
Cook’s tip
For a truly romantic gift on Valentine’s Day, try piping the melted
chocolate onto the biscuits to write a personalised message or
spell out your loved one’s name. White chocolate works really
well, too.
DINING
Beat the January
blues with a trip to
L’Ortolan
If you are looking for a post Christmas
treat to shake the January blues away,
what about taking a trip to the Michelin
starred restaurant L’Ortolan?
In the quaint village of Shinfield, close to Junction
11 of the M4, accessible from many directions,
you would not expect to find a Michelin starred
restaurant. Indeed this is Reading’s only Michelin
restaurant.
The stately Grade II listed building used to be a
vicarage, so we were told. It originally occupied
three floors but during World War 2 a plane
crashed into its roof and due to low funds at that
time, the floor and roof were not re-instated,
so the building now remains on two floors.
The ground floor has a number of dining areas,
including the Glass Room for intimate and
sociable dining. On the first floor you’ll find
two uniquely styled private dining rooms; the
Champagne Room and Wine Cellar. Each room
on their own are quite splendid for intimate
dining spaces to share wonderful food with
family, friends or even business associates.
L’Ortolan - which actually is a small bird of the
Bunting family, has seen a few chefs in its time
but it has retained its Michelin standard since
2001 and won many other accolades, including
Wine Spectators Award of Excellence, Open
Table Diner’s Award and 3 AA rosettes.
Tom Clarke is the current resident chef and has
been passionate about cooking ever since he
can remember. This passion coupled with his
creative flair and varied tastes have helped him
become a highly regarded Michelin Star chef in
Reading today.
“ I like to hit all the notes on sweet and
sour, savoury and salt to produce a
mouthful of complementary flavours”
Head Chef, Tom Clarke
The seven course Gourmand menu is a meal you
will not forget. Each course was not only visually
appetising but every mouthful taken was morsels
of pure deliciousness! Words cannot describe
how good it tasted and these images tell more
of a story.
BUSINESS NEWS
The Greyhound Pub
and Restaurant
opens in Old Town
The Greyhound, a new pub and restaurant
serving modern British cuisine, has opened in
Beaconsfield Old Town.
Headed up by two former Gordon Ramsay frontof-house
staff, the Grade II listed former Coaching Inn
has been sympathetically redesigned, turning the 17th
century building into a modern pub and restaurant.
Owners Daniel Crump and Margriet Vandezande-
Crump, opened the doors this week, offering guests
a modern take on British classics, served in a dining
room created with comfort in mind. The pub also
offers beers and ales from local breweries.
The husband and wife team have worked in some of
the UK’s most established restaurants, such as Michelin
starred Petrus in Knightsbridge, Restaurant Gordon
Ramsay in Chelsea, Trinity in Clapham, and also The
Oxford Blue, Old Windsor.
They are joined by head chef Sean Norton, who was
previously at the highly-acclaimed Frog by Adam
Meet Zeeteah
Messiah
It’s been two years since Zeeteah and her
husband Paul moved from a Notting Hill flat
to their new house near Wooburn, and they
have made lots of new friends in this area.
Handling in London, and a semi-finalist on
‘Masterchef: The Professionals’ in 2018.
The menu includes British classics with Norton’s
own unique interpretation, with dishes such as roast
partridge breast and leg, with spiced cabbage, salt
baked beetroot and cavolo nero; a slow cooked pork
belly, barbequed onion, hispi cabbage and pickles;
as well as his signature south coast mackerel, celeriac,
grape and caper salsa.
Daniel Crump, said: “We are really excited about
being in Beaconsfield. It is such an incredible
part of the country and home to such a great
community. The area, and The Greyhound building,
has a special charm which we immediately fell for
when we first visited.”
www.greyhoundbeaconsfield.co.uk
Known for her amazing jazz, soul and reggae
performances, Zeeteah sings regularly at jazz clubs
and other venues in London, but many of her new
friends have been asking her if she could hold a local
concert. She decided to give it a try.
34
It took a while to find a suitable venue, but settled on
the Wooburn Club because, she says, it was just the
right size, has a nice stage, and a great atmosphere.
So she booked it, organised a band and a sound
system.
How the evening went:
“When we first committed to doing the event, I was
actually worried that only a handful of people would
show up,” says Zeeteah. She needn’t have been.
The club holds about 80 people, and the tickets sold
out within two weeks. In fact there were nearly 100
people there for the event, because, she says, she
“just couldn’t turn down people who were begging us
to squeeze them in.” She adds: “I was blown away by
the wonderful audience and the lovely things people
said afterwards. It was a great evening. We’ll have to
do it again!”.
Editor: We can’t wait to see and hear Zeeteah again
she was phenomenal! For more information go to:
BUSINESS NEWS
Should savers plot their
escape from zombie
funds?
Over many years there has been a huge
reduction in the number of product
providers within the financial services
industry, one of the major drivers for this
has been the offloading of existing policies
by large insurance companies who have
decided that these clients no longer suit
their business strategy.
These polices are often purchased by
specialist providers known as ‘consolidators’
who in turn wish to squeeze the maximum
profit from these policies for as long as
possible. Tagged as ‘zombie funds’ they are
left on the shelf until policyholders either
transfer away, retire or die.
Earlier this year, Phoenix Group announced
plans to acquire the insurance business of
Standard Life for £2.9bn a move which has
caused much surprise and concern in the
industry.
Standard Life follow many other household
names including AXA, Scottish Amicable, NPI,
Sun Alliance, Royal Life and Friends Provident
in going down this particular road and will be
joined by many of Legal & General’s and Old
Mutual policy holders, who are being handed
over to ReAssure.
An assessment by a specialist financial
website, found billions of pounds languishing
in poor performing funds.
If you are affected by any of these changes,
we have a variety of options, which can help
you find a solution. This often includes
transferring away from these consolidators
to a more appropriate product, whilst at the
same time conducting a financial review.
Our Roadmap to Retirement program can
help bring financial assets together, so a
clear, strategic retirement plan can be
adopted. Within this plan let’s not allow it
to be undermined by companies that you
did not choose and ensure your future
provider is fit for purpose.
Why should this matter to you?
• Our experience of dealing with
consolidators is levels of service seriously
deteriorates.
• There is no incentive for the consolidator to
develop existing products to reflect
legislative and market changes.
• Investment performance can often be
affected by fund manager departures.
Kitchen Design Tricks: How to Make Your
Kitchen Look and Feel Bigger
Over the last few decades, kitchens are now
often multifunctional places and, as such,
places that we pride ourselves on.
Though we may all wish for a huge open-plan
kitchen with all the kitchen storage space
our hearts desire, that is rarely what we have
at our disposal. As a room used for so many
essential purposes, keeping the kitchen
clean and comfortable can often feel like an
impossible task.
Here, we offer up some kitchen design tricks into
optimising your kitchen so that it looks and feels
more organised and spacious.
Colours
Colours, of course, have an enormous impact on
our perception. They dictate how we perceive
the shape and ambience of a space. For this
reason, kitchen colour schemes frequently use
bright, neutral colours like whites and greys, and
pastel shades.
A kitchen shouldn’t have too many varying
shades. A kitchen with one predominant light
colour, or a few of a similar shade, will feel open
and expansive. Neutral colours don’t clash with
each other but blend together, erasing visual
boundaries and making a space feel bigger and
less enclosing.
Lighting
There is no point in a well-organised kitchen if
it is lacking sufficient light. A well-lit small kitchen
can look more comfortable and welcoming
than a huge kitchen if it is poorly illuminated.
Natural lighting is vital. It makes you feel
connected to the outside and makes the
room feel freer. You can make the most of any
windows you do have by removing obstacles
and making them the centrepiece.
Along with natural light, a good overall
electric lighting system is a necessity for
those late nights spent cooking. Ceiling
lighting systems like recessed LED lights or
track lights provide optimum illumination in
the centre of your kitchen.
Storage
You want your kitchen to be a smoothly
functioning workspace, but you don’t want
to overdo it with too much furniture and
appliances. It’s all about getting it right by
utilising the most efficient solutions. Take, for
example, the pull-out bin. The bin tucks away
behind closed doors and is out of site, freeing
your floor of an unnecessary obstacle, making
your kitchen feel bigger.
Open shelves and glass-doored cabinets are
brilliant at expanding a room. It might feel like
only a fraction of extra space, but it definitely
opens up your kitchen and stops head-high
cupboards from feeling enclosing.
FASHION
Winter charity fashion
show success!
Another fabulous fashion show was hosted at Jak & Liza on
6th November, showcasing the Autumn Winter collection for
2019/2020.
All money from ticket sales and raffle went to their chosen
charity, William’s Fund, (www.williamsfund.co.uk) which is a
really worthwhile cause, providing research for childhood
cancers at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
This was the third show they had at the shop and it is now
becoming their trademark for an evening of fun and laughter.
Roz Tranfield (former Merseyside Woman Of The Year) was the
compére for the evening and as usual had everyone in stitches
with her funny comments and banter as the girls shimmied
down the catwalk. For those of you that know the shop, they
were fortunate enough to borrow chairs from Jungs restaurant
and seated a sold out crowd of sixty people.
Local businesses gave plenty of support and donations.
Special thanks to: The Cape Beaconsfield for providing
delicious canapés on the night, Toni & Guy for styling the models
hair and photography from Jenny Kaye. Raffle prizes and goody
bag contents donated by: Jenny Kaye Photography, The Yummy
INTERIORS
The Upcycle Revolution
If there is ever a critical time to talk about
the environment, it is now. Attitudes
are changing and as a society we are
becoming more engaged with the benefits
of sustainability. The concept of upcycling
household items that are looking tired and
in need of a transformation is increasingly
becoming the new norm.
In simple terms, upcycling is about making use
of waste or something you no longer use and
repurposing it to improve and prolong its use.
Creative ideas can give a new purpose to
something that would otherwise have been
discarded, and the rewards you reap from saving
money and increasing the value on that item can
outweigh an expensive trip to the furniture store.
Upcycling furniture might seem a little daunting
if you have never tried it before, but it really is
not that hard. Where to start, though? Firstly, if
you have a furniture piece in mind and you do
not happen to have something similar at home
to upcycle, visit vintage markets, car boot sales,
charity shops or online second-hand sites such as
freecycle or ebay for a great bargain.
Preparation is important so ensure you have the
right tools and equipment to help you. Give
your items a good wipe down first before you get
started. Sometimes all it takes is sandpaper, good
paint and some elbow grease to transform your
granny’s chest of drawers. To achieve a distressed
paint finish, apply wax and a top layer of paint
over the first coat of paint. That top layer of paint
is optional if you are looking for two tones of paint
in your distressed finish. Distress the item with
steel wool and sandpaper once the paint is dry. If
you have painted two coats, use the steel wool to
go over the waxed areas to reveal the base colour.
And voilà, you have a new piece of furniture!
Look to pinterest for inspiration, you will be
surprised with how much of the ordinary things we
use every day can become extraordinary with a
little creativity. For example:
1. For small spaces, source some reclaimed wood
and strong rope to suspend a shelf by affixing
securely to the ceiling.
2. Create a wine bottle rack to mount to your
wall using some old vinyl discs - with a little heat
applied you can bend them to create a holder for
your wine bottle. Display a group of them on the
wall for the ultimate retro look!
3. Pick up some old world globes and use them
as cool light fixtures by cutting the bottom of the
globe and threading through the pendant light to
attach to the ceiling.
4. Always dreamt of a kitchen island? Upcycle
a large display cabinet or chest of drawers and
securely affix a quartz countertop on top.
SPORTS NEWS
Beaconsfield Rugby
- enjoyed by all
The club is enjoying a fantastic year, with
Chairman Chris Summers at the helm, and a
tireless and enthusiastic committee. We have
more than 1,000 members, with 463 Mini
players, and 185 Youth players.
The senior club consistently fields three teams.
One of the key foundations of the club’s senior
successes has been the number of colts and
young players representing the senior sides.
We are also very fortunate in youth that over
half of the coaches are still playing themselves.
The traditional distinction between “Saturday
Senior” and “Sunday Mini and Youth” has all
but disappeared, with fantastic integration and
cross-fertilisation being achieved between all
parts of the club.
The club is proud to be a community club with
83 schools and colleges represented in our Mini
and Youth sections.
Richard N Gommo
On the field, we are delighted to finally be
able to offer rugby to ladies and girls, and on a
Saturday have the potential to put out four senior
men’s teams.
Our new Head Coach, Tom French, is an ex Wasps
and England Saxon. Off the field, the club has
ambitious plans to update and expand the club
house to both improve the existing facilities for
our existing members and to make our changing
rooms suitable for the girls and ladies.
All in all, BRFC is a great place to be for the whole
family, both on and off the field. New members
of every level are made to feel very welcome:
come and join us!
RAMS - Beaconsfield
Town FC
The area’s premier Non-League football
club, Beaconsfield Town FC, was honoured
recently to be chosen by the FA to host
training sessions by the National Under 20
sides of England and Iceland prior to their
fixture at Wycombe’s Adams Park - testament
to the fine playing surface and facilities on
offer at Holloways Park. Hopefully this will
be the first of many such tie-ups with the
various National Squads
The ground is also used on a regular basis as
the location for the many movies and TV shows
that are filmed in the area. Recent productions
that have utilized Holloways Park include
Ricky Gervais filming “Afterlife”, Simon Pegg
recording “Truth Seekers” and Maisie Williams
shooting “Two Weeks to Live”. Added to those
are ITV’s “Midsomer Murders” and BBC’s “The
Forge”, both of which have found the ground to
be an ideal base for their needs.
On the football side of things, it’s fair to say
that the First Team are having a ‘difficult’ second
season at Step 3 level of the Non League
pyramid, the highest the club has ever played.
The newly launched Under 18 side, however, are
doing brilliantly, which bodes well for the future,
and already some of the youngsters have made
the step up to the First XI.
For up-to-date fixture news on all the
sides check out The Rams website
www.beaconsfieldtownfc.co.uk and come
on down to a game – we have great beer,
great food and great football!
Come on you Rams!
News from Bekonscot Model Village
The famous metal gates will re-open for
our 2020 season on Saturday 15th February,
but people often ask us what happens
at Bekonscot during the winter months
when closed.
In addition to a lot of re-painting, hedge cutting and
deep cleaning, this year the main lake (aka Mr Callingham’s
swimming pool) was completely drained in order to
remove the build-up of vegetation. This involved having
to remove safely its population of fish and temporarily
house them in a slightly more modern version of the
swimming pool.
fun and entertainment over the Easter Weekend. We
are proud to be working again with Beaconsfield Town
Council in commemorating the 76th anniversary of VE Day
on 8th - 10th May. Join us as we toast all those who made
the ultimate sacrifice and help us to plan a VE Day street
party. In June we will be hosting a special after-hours event
in support of Scannappeal. Keep an eye on our website,
or follow us on social media to hear the latest news about
events taking place at the village.
Did you know that Bekonscot’s surplus funds at the end
of each season are donated to charity? In 2019 a total of
£160,000 was donated to mainly local charities through the
Roland Callingham Small Grants Programme. Some of last
season’s beneficiaries included Alfriston School, Hearing
Dogs for the Deaf, Kiln Court, Search Dogs Bucks, South
Bucks Hospice and Wycombe Homeless Connection.
Our rather dilapidated Party Cabin was demolished in
readiness for the building of a brand-new party venue.
This does mean that party bookings will unfortunately
not be available for the duration of the 2020 season.
Plans for 2020 include regular Make and Take craft
weekends and midweek Toddler Takeovers and family
Small grants of up to £1000 are available to charities
and good causes that support the community local to
Bekonscot Model Village. If you are a local charity or you
know of a worthwhile cause that could benefit from one
of these small grants then please visit our website for
more information and to download the application form.
Green Goddess
Author of Save
Pounds and the Planet
Hi, I’m Jeannette Buckle
and I am passionate about
our planet. In my book I
share hundreds of planetfriendly
tips that save you
time and money too.
With New Year’s resolutions in the making, it is
the perfect time to reflect on what we eat and
why, and how we can improve our health and
benefit the planet. The answer is simple – eat
less meat.
From a planet point of view avoid foods
from the ‘cow’, in particular, as much as
possible. I come from a long traditional line
of meat-eaters, so my approach to improve
the family’s diet was to make changes that
did not impact on taste. So here’s my
5 green top swaps for your stomach:
1. Swap milk with oat milk – great for cereal
and cooking (it’s far more sustainable and tastes
better than both milk and almond milk.)
2. Swap butter with a plant-based spread
– I use Benecol because of the great taste.
eating too much and add more veg and
potatoes etc to the plate.
4. Mince – halve the meat content by adding
equal quantities of pulses such as baked beans
or adzuki beans, which have a great taste and
texture. You can do the same with chicken
dishes. Just add equal quantities of quorn,
mushrooms, nuts or seeds. You keep the taste
but halve your meat consumption in a flash,
improve your diet and save money too.
5. Try to make new veg meals that are not
‘meaty’ in taste part of your weekly menu, for
example, veg lasagne or my seasonal favourite
one pot bake - butternut squash, onion and
paprika (35mins @200°C, then add tomato,
pine nuts and feta; bake for further 10mins).
this article with your order and get a £1 refund
3. Meat – a healthy amount is 100 grams raw
per person. Weigh it to check you are not
