About:

ZWNow is created with the intention of

informing people about the Zero Waste

movement, the impact our lifestyles have on

the planet, and what can be done to help our

planet.

From simple swaps, how-to’s and some

compromises, and find the right way to

introduce others to the Zero Waste lifestyle.

I hope you find useful information in these

pages.

Welcome...

to the second issue of ZWNow!

I’m glad to say the response from the first

issue was very positive, making this second

issue possible. I’d like to thank everyone who

has supported this magazine; advertisers

who make it possible, a few people who

have offered to distribute the magazine to

places out of my reach, and to everyone

who has picked up a copy too.

I’ve been able to visit many of the places

listed in the directory as part of the

distribution process, and have dived deeper

into the zero waste lifestyle myself...

The bright side

Good news from the ZW community

On November 7th Carnaby Street’s Christmas lights for 2019 were revealed. As one of

the most marvellous festive displays in London, the footfall each year is phenomenal.

This year, in an effort to raise awareness of the plastic pollution problem, organisers

collaborated with ocean conservation charity Project Zero to create an eco-friendly

display.

Sporting an underwater theme, immersive

displays of kelp and sea creatures, a five-metrelong

bubble blowing whale and 200 lit-up squid.

The decorations have been created with waterbased,

vegan-friendly paint; Recycled and

reusable materials including repurposed fishing

nets, 500 metres of upcycled bubble wrap, and over 1,500 recycled plastic bottles.

Power for all the lights is also sourced from 100% renewable energy.

Carnaby Street has also been awarded the Blue Turtle mark, confirming that

restaurants along the road are taking steps to eliminate avoidable single-use

plastic, reduce waste, and source only sustainable seafood.

High street frozen food store Iceland has switched its

Christmas dinner packaging to offer customers plastic

free or reduced plastic packaging in a bid to progress its

sustainability initiatives. These products have 97% less plastic packaging than in 2017.

“We’ve been working hard all year to develop alternative packaging solutions and I’m

proud to be offering Iceland customers the choice of plastic free Christmas products,”

Iceland managing director Richard Walker said.

Eighteen products in the range have recyclable paper packaging; including vegetables,

frozen desserts, wax-wrapped cheeses, beef wellington, pies and pasties. Starters,

mains and desserts are available with minimal plastic, meaning customers can

purchase their entire Christmas meal without excess packaging.

Iceland has committed to scrap plastic packaging from its own food labels by the end

of 2023, including removing all black plastic packaging in its own label products by

2020.

Other retailers debuting plastic-free products this Christmas in a bid to win over

consumers include Boots, Selfridges and the John Lewis Partnership, which is selling

‘fill your own’ plastic-free crackers as it strives to phase-out plastic cracker toys by

Christmas 2020 and piloting dozens of loose grocery lines.

The cover photo of this issue was submitted

by Sarah Pink who says: “Recently in half

term I asked my Three year old daughter if

she would like to do something special in

the week, thinking she would suggest a day

at the zoo or something along those lines.

Her reply was: "A litter pick at the beach

to save the animals." We went to the River

Orwell and collected many items including

an offcut of carpet, a t-shirt, loads of broken

glass and lots of food wrappers.

It is something we both enjoyed doing and

will continue to do regularly.”

Litter picking is helpful to the

environment and can also be fun

for the whole family, and a great

opportunity to get outdoors.

Opposite are some arranged

litter picks and beach cleans.

Hopefully there’s one near you

to join, or you could do a one-off

pick yourself or start a group or

recurring event in your area!

Sustainability on a Budget

As more people are becoming more environmentally friendly, a

wealth of eco conscious products are flooding the market. These

range vastly in price from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds.

For those on a tight budget it can be disheartening to see so many

products that they can’t justify purchasing. Is it possible to live a

more sustainable lifestyle without spending a fortune?

One of the best ways to be eco-friendly is very simple – buy less! The

vast majority of us are guilty of buying things just because we like the

look, smell or feel rather than because it fills a need. Next time you’re

shopping and you pick an item up, simply stop and ask yourself do I

need this? Will it serve a purpose in my life or is it just a throwaway

object? For example, if you saw an attractive vase, you could consider

if you actually need a vase to display flowers. Imagine your house

and try to picture where you put it. Would it be visible or is it just

clutter? If you rarely buy cut flowers and you already have a house

full of ornaments it is unlikely you would make use of that vase, no

matter how attractive it may be.

Another budget tip is rather than buy a new product see if you can

repurpose an item you already own. For example, beeswax wraps

are a brilliant replacement for Clingfilm. However, you could also

try placing a plate over a bowl as a temporary cover in the fridge.

Alternatively, you could use Tupperware tubs or even washed up

butter pots to keep food fresh.

Do you have tips, ideas or stories to share?

Winter 2019

Personally I find using less of something often doesn’t stop it being

effective. When cleaning it is better to spray the cloth and then wipe

down a surface then to just spray all over it. You may be surprised

by how far that little spray actually goes. If you’re using less product,

then you’re creating less waste and saving money, an added bonus.

Consider the items you use every day and see if you could use it

more sparingly, creating less waste.

Finally, a fantastic way to live a more sustainable lifestyle on a budget

is to share with friends. You could arrange a clothes swap if you have

friends on a similar dress or shoe size. An instant fashion update

without spending a penny or funding the fast fashion industry.

You could also share skills so if one of you is a fab gardener, they

could lend their expertise in return for someone else teaching them

how to sew.

There are many fantastic eco-friendly products that can help you live

a more sustainable lifestyle but you don’t need to spend a fortune.

With a little creativity there are so many ways to become more

environmentally aware even on the tightest budgets.

Eco Christmas

Cards

TIP: Repurpose last years’ as gift tags

• Send e-cards (check out Just One Tree)

• Recycled paper cards

• If e-cards or recycled cards aren’t for you,

ensure any other cards you send are FSC

Certified

• You can also get cards which are

embedded with wildflowers, make sure

the seeds are native to Britain! Check

etsy if you’re interested.

Crackers

• Only get plastic-free crackers (Check

Waitrose!)

• If you enjoy crackers, find a DIY cracker

kit so you can include gifts your family

actually want

• If you don’t really need them, don’t

bother!

Tree!

• Artificial? If you already have an artificial

tree, keep using it for as long as possible

• Real? Only get an FSC approved tree!

This ensure it comes from a sustainable

source. When January comes around,

be sure to dispose of the tree properly.

Some zoos and animal sanctuaries ask

for them as they can enrich animals’

pens. Some charities collect trees and

dispose of them properly for a fee (then

you’re helping a charity too).

• Potted? A potted tree can live indoors

over the festive period and then live

in the garden the rest of the year, this

can last years and obviously is creating

oxygen (yay).

• Rent a real tree!? Rental tree services are

becoming more popular, check if there’s

a service in your area

Food!

• Try not to overestimate how much food

you’ll eat

• Try having less meat than last year, or a

meat free Christmas dinner

• Use your leftovers, find recipes and share

them with friends

• Compost scraps such as veg peel

• Some leftovers are suitable to feed birds

in the garden!

(Check what is safe for birds on the RSPB

website: https://tinyurl.com/ya7yph8v)

Winter 2019

Gifts

• Consider gifting experiences rather than

objects; memories last a lifetime

• Gift cards, cinema passes, classes...

• Shop local and eco!

• Avoid online shopping, it usually results

in excess packaging

• Purchase second-hand

• Consider doing Secret Santa! Less gifts

overall and it makes gift giving fun and

adds an element of mystery.

Wrap it up!

• You can use Fabric to wrap gifts, (Look up

Furoshiki), this can either be reused lots

or you could use a scarf and it’s a bonus

present!

• Reuse wrapping paper from gifts you

received last year

• If you need new wrapping paper, get

recycled paper

• Use newspaper, brown paper or other

‘waste’

• Reusable tote, again this can be a bonus

present

• Go wrapping free, do you really need it?

Recycling your wrapping paper?

Scrunch the wrapping paper, and release;

if it stays scrunched, it’s recyclable, if it

unscrunches it cannot be recycled as it is

likely to be lined with plastic!

Glitter cannot be recycled!

Remember that just because you can’t recycle

it, doesn’t mean it has to end up in landfill;

keep larger pieces to re-use or repurpose

next year; donate it to someone who does

scrapbooking or a primary school to use in

collages; smaller pieces can be turned into

gift-tags with a little glue and card.
