A wannabe zero-waster’s guide to helping the planet

Autumn 2019

About:

ZWNow is created with the intention of

informing people about the Zero Waste

movement, the impact our lifestyles have on

the planet, and what can be done to help our

planet.

From simple swaps, how-to’s and some

good news. ZWNow aims to introduce you

to new ideas, help you figure out the right

compromises, and find the right way to

introduce others to the Zero Waste lifestyle.

I hope you find useful information in these

pages.

• Have a story you’d like to publish?

• Have you written the ultimate guide to

composting?

• Have you taken a striking photograph that

may inspire others?

Find us on social media @ZW_Now or get in

touch by emailing info@zwnow.co.uk

Welcome...

to what I hope may be a new quarterly

magazine, coming to you all over East Anglia,

and online. My aim for this publication is

simple, to spread the word, advise, discover

and teach about the zero waste lifestyle

you’ve probably heard about by now!

Although I’ve decided to take on this task,

I myself am on a journey of discovery too.

My personal journey to zero waste living is

ongoing and I am by no means an expert on

the subject.

Thank you to all who helped make this

magazine a reality

The bright side

Good news from the ZW community

According to new preliminary data, over 30,000 humpback whales now populate the

western Indian Ocean, where in the late 1970s the numbers were below 600.

Scotland’s Deposit Return Scheme will soon be rolled out in shops, takeaway

restaurants and cafes. The scheme is designed to be accessible and easy to use and

will refund 20p for aluminum and steel cans, glass and polyethylene terephthalate

(PET) plastic bottles.

Litter Heroes Campaign has been gaining exposure since

being promoted by BBC Countryfile magazine, The Outdoor

Guide and the RSPCA. The initiative is designed to urge

people to clear up rubbish they see when out walking or

otherwise enjoying the countryside.

Anyone climbing Mt Kilimanjaro will now see

this sign on the way up. g

Why should anyone

go Zero Waste?

Looking for your reason to go ZW?

We’ve got you covered.

1. Save resources

2. Less landfill

3. Prevent litter

4. Reduce emissions

Our beaches should be full of

turtles, crabs and seashells. Not

the bottles, toothbrushes and

fishing nets plaguing our shores.

300 Million tons of plastic is

produced each year, 10% is

recycled. Enough plastic is thrown

away each year to circle the earth

four times.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

is a mass of garbage in the North

Pacific, approximately three times

the size of France. With 80,000

tons of trash accumulating in the

Gyre, this is the largest of the

5 Garbage patches tormenting

our oceans.

1.3 Billion tons of food is wasted

globally each year. Going Zero

Waste makes you part of the

solution, rather than the problem.

For the future of the human race,

for our children and grandchildren.

Or simply because

there is no ‘Planet B’.

A wannabe zero-waster’s guide to helping the planet

Easy Changes

You don’t need to change much in your daily life to have an

impact, here’s a few things you can start doing right away

• Say no to using a straw. Do you really need one? If you do really

need one, it’s worth investing in a metal or glass straw to replace

using plastic or paper straws, otherwise, just don’t use them!

• Recycle what you can. You probably already do this, but being

mindful of what you definitely can and can’t recycle will help you

to make better purchases.

• Buy secondhand when possible. Secondhand clothes are still

good, and remember you’ll save money too.

• Reuse that water bottle you already have! You don’t need to buy

a stainless steel bottle to stop using a single use bottle every day!

Just fill up an empty bottle!

• Hankerchief! Using a cloth hankie rather than lots of tissues is a

good idea, particularly if you have hayfever or allergies. You can

just wash it with the rest of your laundry.

• Buying loose veg? Don’t put it in a plastic bag. Leave it loose in

your basket, it won’t hurt!

• Something broken? Rather than throwing it out, try to fix it, or

see if a friend or neighbour can fix it.

• Soap! Using a bar rather than a plastic bottle is an obvious swap.

Bonus points if you can find one that doesn’t come in any plastic.

• Tote bags. We all know we need to stop using single use plastic

bags. If you already have reusable bags, excellent. If not, find a

second hand tote bag for your groceries.

ZWNow

DIY time!

This tutorial can work with most fabric and

in most sizes too, for an average sized bag,

use fabric approximately the size of a pillow

case.

1. Start off by cutting two pieces in the

shape shown here, it helps to fold your

fabric in half vertically to get the top

symmetrical.

2. Lay your two pieces of cut fabric on top

of each other, good sides facing in, cut a

small square in the bottom corners and

sew along the bottom and sides.

3. In the cut corners, pull the fabric in the

opposite direction to the stitches you

just made, and sew the opening, creating

a box shape.

4. Depending on your fabric, you may need

to hem the straps to prevent fraying

5. Sew the top of the handles together then

flip your work inside out so the stitches

stay on the inside.
