Theplanwastocreateanimaginativerenovation

inoneofthemostsignificantlocationsinthe

city.

Theideawastoproduceapublicspacewhich

reflectedthedignityofthelocationandwould

provideanewcivicspacewhichcouldbeused

forarangeof

activities.Theexistingroadsandpavements

wereremovedanda“fieldofstones”was

createdingranite,intowhichsmoothpaths

havebeenlaidforeaseofpedestrianmovement.

Theproximitytotheseaiscelebratedwithhigh

lightingmastswhichrepresentships’mastsand

liftpeoples’gazetothesky,whichthenreminds

themofthevastnesoftheopensea.

Shortsectionthoughmainpreformingspace

BaterseaTownHalisabeautifulyconstructedcivicbuildingwhichwasdesignedbyE.W.

Mountfordandopenedin1893.Since1974thebuildinghasbeenusedasanartscentre.

HaworthTompkinshasbeenworkingwiththeartscentreteamandthelocalcommunityto

developthebuildingfurtherintobeingaplaceofcommunalactivity.Anewpubliccourtyard

hasbeencreated,whilstthepreviouslyunusedaticsandrooftopspacehavebecomeoffices

andaroofgarden.TheGreatHalofthebuildingwasbadlydamagedinafirewhilethe

renovationworkwasbeingcariedout,andtheoveraldesignhasaccommodatedarestored

GreatHalwhichhasretainedthefire-blackenedwals,whilstastunningnewwoodentubular

gridceilinghasbeencreated.Theaimoftheprojectwasnotjustthatanewdesignwouldbe

producedbutalsoculturalchangeinthearea.Thebuildingisawonderfulfusionofoldand

new,traditionalandinnovative.

Sliding House


Thebriefgivenbytheclient

wastobuildahouseto

retireto,whichwouldalow

food to begrown,the

landscapetobeenjoyed,

andgueststobeentertained.

Theruralsitewassubject

to stringent planning

guidelinesandboththe

clientandarchitecthada

sharedappreciationfor

timberframedandclad

farm buildings.

Theresultisasinglelinear

buildingwhichisslicedinto

3parts:ahouse,agarage

and an annexe.

Thegarageispuledof-axis

tocreateacourtyardarea.

The building isfurther

definedbytheuseofcolour

andmaterial.Thereisred

rubbermembrane,glas

andredandblackstained

lalarch cladding.

The building however

containsasurprise.There

isa20tonmobileroof/wal

enclosurewhichtraverses

thesite.Thisspansrecesed

railwaytrackswhichalows

thebuildingtomoveand

expand,posiblybyadding

anotherbuildingoreven

a swimming pool.

whichinvolvestheuseof

‘platonicpanels’whichitis

hopedwilhaveavarietyof

posibleuses.

demonstratedthroughthe

useofascalemodelatthe

2016VeniceBiennale.

acrostheUKandareintendedtobeplaces

ofsupportforcancersuferersandtheir

families.Theyaredesignedtobeinclusive

placeswherepeoplefeelwelcomeand

affirmed.

Thebuildingreplacesabrick-built1960s’

structure.

Itisformedofaconcreteframefacedinside

withalayerofbamboo;theoutsidelayerisof

matewhiteglasinterspersedwithcoloured

glas.Thiscreatestremendouslightandspace

whichisenhancedbytheopencurved

staircasewhichisintegraltotheconcrete

frame.Aspeoplemoveupthroughthe

building,thelightisdifusedthroughthe

colouredandmatewhiteglastoform

wonderfulmulti-facetedlayersofcolour.

Thebuildingisenvisagedasthreeinterlocking

layers.Ithasbeendescribedasaveselwithin

aveselwithinavesel.Theaimistodraw

peopleinandtocreateasenseof

envelopment.

was helpful in that decision proces.

Tate St Ives


ThisisamajorextensiontotheoriginalTate,

StIves,whichwasopenedin1993.The2017

extensiondoubledtheavailablespace.

Thebriefincludedtheneedforasurfacelevel

receptionspacebutthevastbulkofthebuilding

hasbeensunkintotheclifs.Theexterior

featureshavebeendesignedtoreflectthe

architecturalfeaturesofthetown.

Thebeamsandwalshavebeenformedfrom

concretewhichwasmouldedinsituandcreates

arusticfeelwhichisalsoredolentofthetown.

Howeverthemostpowerfulfeatureistheuse

oflightwhichisdrawnfromabovethrough

rooflights,andthewholebuildingisflooded

withlight.

Themaingaleryspaceisacolumn-lesspace

ofover500squaremetreswhichcanbeused

asasinglespaceorsubdividedintoupto6

smalerspaces.

Thisprojectisaresultofanarchitecturalcompetitionfrom1999.The

briefofthecompetitionwasforthegradualrestorationofthemuseum

complexandanewRoadTransportHal.

Thenewentranceactsasabridgetolinkthetwoexistingbuildings.

Anopeningintheceilingoftheentrancehalgivesviewsthrough

theentirebuilding.

ThenewTransportHalwasdesignedtoimitatethestorageofvehicles

intherealworldandhasbeendesignedtoresembleamulti-storey

carpark.

Thestrikingfaçadehasbeenfacedwithrecycledtrafficsigns.These

aremadeofsheetmetalandthesamematerialhasbeenusedon

thebackofthebuilding,butthesesignsfaceinward.Thepurpose

istorepresentwhattrafficsignslooklikewhenviewedfromtherear!
