• By Matt Slaughter
KATHLEEN BURFORD had a
concern 20 years ago.
There were not many initiatives
set up to help migrant and
refugee women arriving in
Christchurch make connections
and friendships.
The 74-year-old Westmorland
resident decided to bring these
women together the best way she
knew how- by teaching them to
make quilts.
Mrs Burford has been recognised
with a Queen’s Service
Medal as part of the New Year
Honours for her service to
Christchurch’s migrant community.
Said Mrs Burford: “Quilting’s a
great medium for friendship and
self-esteem and it doesn’t really
need a language. People can sit
and stitch and they can be taught
by being shown what to do.”
She said the group meets every
Monday during school terms
at the Sydenham Community
Centre and about 300 women
from 50 different countries
have taken part in it since it was
established.
The first part of the redevelopment
involved a new building linking and
expanding the junior block; a new
administration block; the transformation
of the former office into a dedicated
high-technology hub for Yr 7 and 8
students; and construction of a new
combined library and flexible learning
space.
This year the redevelopment continues
– and will be completed – with the
refurbishment of existing buildings,
including two long brick ‘Canterbury
blocks’ that were built in the 1960s when
the school opened.
Principal Margaret Trotter says they are
now more than half way through the
community,’’ she said.
A lot of effort had gone into minimising
disruption to teaching, learning and the
neighbouring community during the
project, and everyone’s patience was
greatly appreciated, Mrs Trotter said.
The Ministry of Education funded the
‘building’ part of the redevelopment
but a lot of costs, such as playgrounds,
landscaping, furniture, curtains and new
technology items, would be paid for
by the school’s Board of Trustees and
the Parent Teacher Association, Mrs
Trotter said. This community input to the
school’s future was valued, she said.
The redevelopment is scheduled to
finish before the end of 2020.
Residents’
association
Facebook
confusion
• By Matt Slaughter
A POST on Cashmere Residents’
Association resilience Facebook
page has been called out as being
not a true reflection of what the
group stands for.
The post made under the residents’
association’s name on January
3 has been called a “rant” by
Facebook commenters who have
raised concerns about the state of
the association.
The post is critical of why
“one of (supposedly) the best resourced
suburbs in Christchurch
(Cashmere) should fail to run
a residents’ group, let alone an
obviously important and desirable
preparedness/ resilience program
around that basic organisation.”
But Helen
Tait, who is a
member of a
group set up
to try and reestablish
the
association,
which has
not been
active since
February last
year, said the
Helen Tait
post was made by the association’s
ex-president Rik Tindall, who was
expelled from his role in 2018.
Recognition for helping migrants through quilting
• From page 1
Mrs Burford said the group’s
current members lost three
husbands and a son in the March
15 terrorist attacks.
Quilting has brought the community
closer, she said.
Members have gained “Selfesteem
and confidence” and
“language, they learn English,”
said Mrs Burford.
“They make friendships that
they would never make otherwise
with other cultures.”
Said Mrs Burford: “I think I’ve
been given a sense of identity,
quilting has given me a sense of
identity.”
CALLS HAVE been made to
increase safety measures along
the Beckenham Loop to better
protect school pupils and other
pedestrians.
The Beckenham Neighbourhood
Association met at the end
of last year to discuss possible
measures to make the loop,
where the speed limit is 50km/h,
safer. The association’s chairman
Greg Millar said suggested solutions
included narrowing some
streets within it, creating more
pedestrian crossings or safer
crossing points and improving
For those struggling to settle in
after they move to New Zealand,
Mrs Burford said: “I’ve learnt to
hug and I’ve learnt to kiss three
times.”
She said being recognised with
a Queen’s Service Medal was a lot
to take in.
“I was overwhelmed to think
that it was worth that probably.
It was good and I’ve kind of been
overwhelmed by all of the congratulations,
that’s been amazing.
But, also I know that without all
of my helpers and without all of
my women this wouldn’t happen.”
Mrs Burford said she also
couldn’t have done what she had
without the support of her husband
David Burford and children
Sharron, Paul and Nathan.
TOGETHERNESS:
Kathleen Burford’s
quilting classes
have been attended
by about 300
migrant and refugee
women in the 20
years they have
been running.
She said the group received
funding support from the Rata
Foundation and had previously
done so from rotary.
Pupil safety a priority along Beckenham Loop
visibility for pedestrians using it.
Said city council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas: “Council staff have
received concerns regarding vehicles
speeding in this area from
local residents.
“Within the last year there
have been two complaints in
regards to vehicles speeding on
Malcolm Ave.”
Mr Thomas said “There are
currently no plans for pedestrian
improvements in this area,
although these will be reconsidered
(with input from the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community
Board) in the development of the
future year safety improvement
programme.”
Mr Millar said a number of
pupils from Beckenham and Thorrington
schools used the loop during
term time and it is important
their journey to and from school is
made as safe as possible.
In terms of busy intersections
within the loop: “There’s quite a
few of them, really. Right down
the middle of Beckenham, there’s
Norwood St and Birdwood Ave.
There are also areas like Tennyson
St, they’ve sort of had ongoing
concerns there with safety of
kids crossing living on the north
side of Tennyson St and coming
across to get to school in the
morning, it’s quite a busy street
and there’s not great visibility
due to lots of on-street parking
and bike lanes.
“From time to time you see on
our Facebook page stories about
issues with pedestrian safety and
busy roads and things, so it’s just
sort something we’ve identified
as a potential area for improvement,”
said Mr Millar.
Mr Millar said the association
will gather feedback from
residents on any concerns they
have about pedestrian safety
within the loop and their ideas
for measures to make it safer.
In Brief
SEWER IMPROVEMENTS
The renewal of the sewer mains
and laterals along Inglis St,
Phillipstown is set to begin this
month and should take about
five weeks. The existing sewers
are reaching the end of their
lifespans.
Social media stoush
• From page 1
Ms Tait said Mr
Tindall’s post does not
reflect the views of the
Cashmere Residents’
Association, which is
an incorporated society
currently in recess,
while she and two
others consider the feasibility
Rik Tindall
said: “There was no
provision at that
time in the association’s
constitution
specifically for how
membership would be
terminated. They used
the general provision
to act in what they saw
as the best interests of
of starting it up again.
Said Ms Tait: “No former
office holders of the association
or indeed, any other members
of the association have any
authority to speak on behalf
of the association or post
anything in the name of the association
on the Facebook page
or take the name of the association
for any other reason.”
But Mr Tindall said the Facebook
page’s description makes
clear that it is no longer active
and its content is simply a vestige
of the sentiment within the
Cashmere community.
He also said the process to
expel him as president was
not carried out correctly as
this happened at a residential
address rather than councilowned
premises, so he feels he
still has a right to post on the
page in a way to help rebuild
the association.
Ms Tait was not involved
in the decision to expel Mr
Tindall as president but she
the association at that time and
made that decision.”
Mr Tindall said he is open to
meeting with those interested
in re-activating the association
so it can serve Cashmere once
again.
Ms Tait said posts like this
could confuse people and suggest
the association is unstable.
People’s comments in response
to the post demonstrate
this confusion.
Said one person: “Totally
looks like a rant to me and
makes very little sense? If the
person writing this is involved
in running the group it may
not be surprising that folks do
not want to be involved. Just a
thought.”
Another person said: “Didn’t
really understand a word of
that - is this not the official
residents’ association page
anymore? Because if it’s not, it
probably shouldn’t have those
words in the page name as it’s
rather misleading.”
Lyn McKinnon responds
to the December 17
article on a father’s calls
for a safer cycle route
between Westmorland and
Cashmere High School.
It is certainly a very busy and
potentially really disastrous
route to take, whether you are
a student en route to Cashmere
High, as you have described, or a
pensioner like me.
I have a husband in hospital
care at Cashmere View and
bought an electric bike so that for
my daily visits from Westmorland
I would not need my car.
But on very busy days (all day
Saturday and Sunday) and at
peak times during the week I feel
quite vulnerable, and sometimes
resort to dismounting and waiting
on the footpath to cross the
road when there is eventually a
break in the traffic.
I can see that the Cracroft area
will be a problem for planners
of cycle tracks, as the bridge
over the river would probably
need major reconstruction. But
I believe the high-density cycle
usage, both by Cashmere High
students and hundreds, possibly
thousands of recreational or
competitive cyclists seven days of
the week, should make this part
of the city’s cycling network a
priority for planners.
A long-term plan, possibly not
programmed for another seven
to eight years, is just not good
enough. I feel annoyed that I
will probably be pushing up the
daisies before a sensible solution
is implemented. I just hope that
I am not in that position as a
result of a fatal encounter on this
stretch of road.
Cornelis Tabak responds
to the December 10 article
on the measures being taken
to make the Hoon Hay,
Worsleys and Cashmere
Rds intersection and Dyers
Pass and Hackthorne Rds
intersection safer.
There seems to be a very small
vocal minority who want traffic
lights here.
This minority obviously has
a problem with negotiating this
and many other intersections and
they want traffic lights everywhere.
They give their driving ability
away by mentioning having problems
making right-hand turns.
It is not a busy intersection and
roading improvements would
help.
Parking on the very narrow
Cashmere Rd very near this
intersection is stupid. I could
almost write a book about this
intersection.
My rates have almost
doubled in the six years I
have lived on Hoon Hay Rd.
Another $2.5 million for people
who can’t drive certainly has me
started.
The other intersection of Dyers
and Hackthorne Rds is trickier to
negotiate so great care is needed
there, like everywhere with all
driving.
Volunteers transform wetlands
IN 20 YEARS, an industrial
plot of land in Ferrymead
has been transformed into a
reserve teeming with native
bush and wildlife.
Charlesworth Reserve and
Wetland is one of the projects
spearheaded by the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai
Trust.
Trust chairman Kit Doudney
said the group has come a
long way since forming almost
two decades ago.
“Charlesworth Reserve is
a great example of how an
entire landscape has been
transformed and returned to
its natural state,” he said.
“The trust and its volunteers
have put so much work and
effort into maintaining and
enhancing the land. By planting
native bush and trees we
have seen birdlife return and
thrive in that area.”
“Volunteers are the backbone
Ihutai also works strategically
Oaklands School
Oaklands School in Halswell is being
transformed, with three new purpose
built blocks and the refurbishment of
remaining buildings.
Last year the redevelopment of the
school began as part of the Canterburywide
school building programme
following the earthquakes.
The first part of the redevelopment
involved a new building linking and
expanding the junior block; a new
administration block; the transformation
of the former office into a dedicated
high-technology hub for Yr 7 and 8
students; and construction of a new
combined library and flexible learning
space.
This year the redevelopment continues
– and will be completed – with the
refurbishment of existing buildings,
including two long brick ‘Canterbury
blocks’ that were built in the 1960s when
the school opened.
Principal Margaret Trotter says they are
now more than half way through the
Welcome to new students for the 2020 school year.
Our staff are looking forward to meeting you and
we anticipate yet another ‘Brilliant’ year at Breens
Intermediate School.
Welcome back to our Year 8 students. Hopefully you
have all had a good holiday and are excited about your
learning for this year.
2020 school year commences:
Year 8 students – Thursday 30th January at 8.50am
All students – Friday 31st February at 8.50am
On Friday 31st January – Year 7 & the new Year 8 students
are to assemble at the front of the school. We will have staff
& students there to show you where to go.
At 9am there will be a Mihi Whakatau to welcome new
students to Breens. Parents & Whanau are invited to join us
for the welcome to our Breens school community.
The Breens school office will re-open on
Tuesday 28th January, 2020.
redevelopment and the school campus
is already looking and feeling different.
“It is exciting to see the changes that
have happened already and for students
to be occupying the new buildings. It
is also wonderful to anticipate how the
improved facilities will cater for current
and future generations of students in our
community,’’ she said.
A lot of effort had gone into minimising
disruption to teaching, learning and the
neighbouring community during the
project, and everyone’s patience was
greatly appreciated, Mrs Trotter said.
The Ministry of Education funded the
‘building’ part of the redevelopment
but a lot of costs, such as playgrounds,
landscaping, furniture, curtains and new
technology items, would be paid for
by the school’s Board of Trustees and
the Parent Teacher Association, Mrs
Trotter said. This community input to the
school’s future was valued, she said.
The redevelopment is scheduled to
finish before the end of 2020.
2020 edition
Papanui High School -
Preparing students
for their future
Giving students the opportunity to study
from an innovative and broad curriculum
is critical to providing each student a
pathway that meets their individual
needs. We allow for a greater range and
flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/
tertiary interface. This reinforces
the philosophy underpinning
personalised learning and
is strongly supported
by understanding our
students’ interests,
passions, talents, and
ultimately their career
aspirations.
We understand that
for effective learning
to take place, it has to
be implemented in such
a way that students will be
highly engaged. The school
does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by
creating learning environments that
allow our students to see value in what
they do and achieve. Papanui “PRIDE” is
what we represent and we demonstrate
this by having young adults leave our
school as confident learners who have
gained the appropriate qualifications
and social skills to become valued
contributing members of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations – what we call “Our
Full service Model”. The school highly
values the connectedness
of curricular and cocurricular
learning. We
have a philosophical
understanding that the
holistic development
of the student
is critical to their
individual success.
The school has worked
hard to consolidate recent
initiatives to ensure sustained
and continuous improvement. You
are invited to view our website, school
charter, ERO report, and/or contact the
school for more information.
We look forward to welcoming all
prospective students and their families/
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo
Hornby High School community, and a
special welcome to those of you who
are new to our community.
We begin 2020 eager to set our new
‘normal’ as we begin our first full year in
our wonderful new buildings. The impact
of those buildings on our young people
and staff alike has been enormous. Our
experience through the end of 2019
was that learning was calm, settled,
and focused. One visitor to our kura in
late 2019 described the ‘vibe’ as very
much like that feeling you get when you
arrive home after a hard day at work: a
place where you can just ‘be’, a place
where you can settle to what you need
to do with purpose and clarity. What a
New school coming
Plans for a new Marian College at
Papanui in 2023 are advancing, with a
concept design expected in coming
months.
Marian College Principal Mary-Lou
Davidson says students, staff and the
school community have helped provide
feedback and ideas, which has informed
design. “Our new school and grounds
will reflect and celebrate our Catholic
special character, cultural narrative,
values, heritage and story.
wonderful description from a visitor, and
a description that equally matches our
own experiences.
We also begin the year with some
exciting changes to our junior curriculum
as we make learning more connected to
the real world, more connected across
subject areas, and with a new pastoral
system that will evolve over the next five
years giving even greater support to our
learners.
Coming on the back of continually
improving achievement results across
the school, these are exciting times.
Alongside this work, Marian continues
to deliver high quality teaching and
Villa Maria College is a state integrated
Catholic secondary school for girls in
Years 7 – 13. The College was opened
by the Sisters of Mercy in 1918 and has
grown to accommodate 800 students
within its beautiful grounds. The spirit of
Mercy is the very heart of our College,
and there is an emphasis on service
to others and the community. Girls are
educated in Catholic teachings, and this
Catholic character is evident throughout
the College.
Our Mission is to: “Empower each young
woman to determine her potential, live
Gospel values, confidently embrace lifelong
learning and as a Mercy woman be
inspired to make a difference”.
The education Villa Maria College
offers is of the highest quality, and we
are proud of our excellent academic
results. Girls are encouraged to stretch
themselves and work towards individual
goals, so they fulfil their potential.
Our strong academic programme is
combined with varied co-curricular
activities, encompassing sport, cultural
and musical programmes.
Our pastoral care systems ensure that
all girls are supported throughout their
participate fully in all aspects of College
Shirley Intermediate School continues
hosting the White Ribbon “Positive
Family Relationships”. With a major
building and grounds development
commencing in a few months, and the
implementation of their communitybased
curriculum, positive change
continues. In addition to two new
teachers joining the SIS team, the
appointment of the wonderfully skilled
Tamara Drew as a full-time Learning
capacity for assisting children with
learning needs - including the children
at the higher achievement levels. The
Shirley District Music School continues
to offer affordable music tuition for
children at SIS and the nearest schools.
SENIOR LIVING
Six exercises to help Sciatica
Reclining pigeon pose
Pigeon pose is a common yoga pose. It works to open the
hips. There are multiple versions of this stretch. The first
is a starting version known as the reclining pigeon pose.
If you are just starting your treatment, you should try the
reclining pose first.
1. While on your back, bring your right leg up to a right
angle. Clasp both hands behind the thigh, locking your
fingers.
2. Lift your left leg and place your right ankle on top of the
left knee.
3. Hold the position for a moment. This helps stretch
the tiny piriformis muscle, which sometimes becomes
inflamed and presses against the sciatic nerve, causing
pain.
4. Do the same exercise with the other leg. Once you can
do the reclining version without pain, work with your
health care professional on sitting and forward versions
of pigeon pose.
sitting pigeon pose
1. Sit on the floor with your legs stretched out straight in
front of you.
2. Bend your right leg, putting your right ankle on top of
the left knee.
3. Lean forward and allow your upper body to reach
toward your thigh.
4. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. This stretches the glutes and
lower back.
5. Repeat on the other side.
FoRwaRd pigeon pose
1. Kneel on the floor on all fours.
2. Pick up your right leg and move it forward on the
ground in front of your body. Your lower leg should be
on the ground, horizontal to the body. Your right foot
should be in front of your right knee while your right
knee stays to the right.
3. Stretch the left leg out all the way behind you on the
floor, with the top of the foot on the ground and toes
pointing back.
4. Shift your body weight gradually from your arms to
your legs so that your legs are supporting your weight.
Sit up straight with your hands on either side of your
legs.
5. Take a deep breath. While exhaling, lean your upper
body forward over your front leg. Support your weight
with your arms as much as possible.
6. Repeat on the other side.
Knee to opposite shouldeR
This simple stretch helps relieve sciatica pain by loosening
your gluteal and piriformis muscles, which can become
inflamed and press against the sciatic nerve.
1. Lie on your back with your legs extended and your feet
flexed upward.
2. Bend your right leg and clasp your hands around the
knee.
3. Gently pull your right leg across your body toward your
left shoulder. Hold it there for 30 seconds. Remember to
pull your knee only as far as it will comfortably go. You
should feel a relieving stretch in your muscle, not pain.
4. Push your knee so your leg returns to its starting
position.
5. Repeat for a total of three reps, and then switch legs.
sitting spinal stRetch
Sciatica pain is triggered when vertebrae in the spine
compress. This stretch helps create space in the spine to
relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
1. Sit on the ground with your legs extended straight out
with your feet flexed upward.
2. Bend your right knee and place your foot flat on the
floor on the outside of your opposite knee.
3. Place your left elbow on the outside of your right knee
to help you gently turn your body toward the right.
4. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat three times, then switch
sides.
standing hamstRing stRetch
This stretch can help ease pain and tightness in the
hamstring caused by sciatica.
1. Place your right foot on an elevated surface at or below
your hip level. This could be a chair, ottoman, or step
on a staircase. Flex your foot so your toes and leg are
straight. If your knee tends to hyperextend, keep a slight
bend in it.
2. Bend your body forward slightly toward your foot. The
further you go, the deeper the stretch. Do not push so
far that you feel pain.
3. Release the hip of your raised leg downward as opposed
to lifting it up. If you need help easing your hip down,
loop a yoga strap or long exercise band over your right
thigh and under your left foot.
4. Hold for at least 30 seconds, and then repeat on the
other side.
exeRcise with caRe
Be cautious and work with the flexibility of your body. If
you attend a class or watch YouTube videos, those people
have been practicing for a while. Don’t compare yourself
or push yourself. Flow with your body and if you have
kind of pain, you should stop. You can try again at another
time.
Proposed Changes to
Cashmere High School Zone
Over recent years increasing in-zone student
enrolments at Cashmere High School has meant
our school is now at capacity. The Board of
Trustees are seeking to manage this student roll
growth by amending to our school zone with an
aim to reduce our school roll.
All information on the proposed zone changes is
available on our school website (www.cashmere.
school.nz) under ‘Latest News’.
The Cashmere High School Board of Trustees
are seeking community consultation on the
proposed school zone changes before a final
decision can be made.
A public meeting will be held at 6pm on
Thursday 30th January 2020 in the Cashmere
High School Performing Arts Centre.
Please either email submissions to:
bah@cashmere.school.nz or post to Cashmere
High School, 172 Rose Street, Christchurch 8024.
The closing date for this consultation process
is Monday 10th February 2020.
Yours sincerely
Geordie Hooft
