Ventana Gourmet Grill
A casual upscale dining experience in the heart of Downtown Excelsior Springs
18 years ago, sisters Wendy Baldwin and Jill Rickart decided to
take a chance on a new business venture in downtown Excelsior
Springs. At the time, the downtown was a shell of what it is today,
but the sisters saw potential for growth that they could be a part
of and help spearhead.
Their restaurant, Ventana Gourmet Grill, came to life in February
2002, offering a casual yet upscale dining experience that was
previously lacking in this small town. Their corner building is a
site to behold, with historically ornate ceilings, original wood
floors and brick walls full of the antique charm that Excelsior
Springs has come to be known for.
The menu is eclectic, with choices for every preference, from
pasta to award-winning steaks, and everything in between. On
any one table you might find a caesar salad with a cup of lobster
bisque soup, a bowl of New Orleans cajun pasta with a side of
parmesan pita bread, a prime rib with zucchini and a baked
potato, and if it’s a Tuesday night, you might even find an order
of their all you can eat shrimp.
Along with their gourmet entree choices, Ventana boasts
an extensive wine list, beer and spirits, and is famous for their
homemade cheesecake.
While the taste and quality of the food is upper level, the sisters’
love of their business and their town is another driving force
behind their success. In the past almost two decades, they have
become pillars in the community. Always willing to pitch in, they
serve on the Downtown Excelsior Partnership Board, a group
dedicated to the advancement and continued improvements of
the downtown, often host fundraisers for local sports teams and
other organizations, and donate to many local causes. Ventana
also holds a partnership with the local community theatre,
Slightly Off Broadway Theatre, offering show and dinner combo
tickets for a fun night on the town.
Their forward thinking momentum has led to multiple
expansions over the years. With the growing need to
accommodate larger groups, such as wedding or retirement
parties, they expanded their business to include what they
affectionately call “The O.R.,” also just known as “the other room.”
In 2018, they expanded again, opening a bakery right next door
called “Ventana Sweet Kneads” to satisfy the needs of those with
a sweet tooth.
If you’re in the mood for high quality food brought to you
by friendly faces, please be sure to visit Ventana Gourmet Grill,
located at 117 W. Broadway. Their menu is available at www.
ventanagourmetgrill.com. If you would like more information
on hosting a party in their event space, please contact 816-630-
8600.
If you’d like to make a reservation, you can do so at ventanagourmetgrill.com
Willow Spring Mercantile
the wine is always pouring & the coffee’s always on
Guests will feel right at
home when they step inside
the quaint shop and bistro that
is Willow Spring Mercantile.
The Mercantile, owned by
Jim and Daphne Bowman,
has been a staple of the
downtown for over a
decade. Walking in the brick
storefront, you’re transported
into a world of wine and food,
smiles and great conversation.
On any given day you might
be treated to the ambient
sounds of Jim’s guitar playing while you sample
one of the over 300 Missouri wines available
in the shop. Besides wine, other items for sale
include beer, coffees, teas, food mixes, apparel
and other novelty items.
Through the shop and down the stairs is Willow
Spring’s Bistro, open daily for lunch and twice a
month for dinner. Dishes are made with real, fresh
and locally sourced ingredients, with substitutions
available for those with food sensitivites. Menu
items include appetizers such as the seasonal
fruit and cheese plate or red pepper hummus,
salads like the almond caesar,
flatbread pizzas, specialty
sandwiches and wraps, and
decadent homemade desserts.
On weekends, live music from
local musicians will fill the air.
Second Weekends in
downtown Excelsior Springs
brings extended hours to The
Mercantile and live music all
three days. Second Weekends
is a downtown event that takes
place the second weekend of
each month where businesses
stay open later and often include special guests
and promotions.
Another popular monthly WIllow Spring
occurrence is the coveted Four-Course Wine
Dinner. This ticketed event features a Missouri
Winery joining Jim, Daphne and other guests
for a gourmet four-course meal accompanied by
four select Missouri wines to compliment each
course. Dates, menus and tickets can be found at
ShopTheMercantile.com.
Willow Spring Mercantile can be found at 249 E.
Broadway in the historic Downtown district.
We were wonderfully
surprised with this
delightful place. On a
girls weekend, we had a
delightful lunch; enjoyed
2 flatbread pizzas &
the recommended wine
pairings were spot on (a

& a pear gorgonzola
with a Chardonnay/

was topped with peaches

And we went back

IT’S
SOMEWHERE
For a small town, Excelsior Springs is livin’ large when it
comes to wineries. Home to three vineyards, there is never
any shortage of the sweet (or dry) liquid gold.
Four Horses and a Dog Vineyard & Winery is located at
15010 Salem Rd. Created in 2008, Four Horses was brought
to life by two couples with a love of wine. In addition to
their own wine, they offer local beer, Missouri hard ciders,
mimosas and sangrias. Popcorn, chips, meat and cheese
trays and snack platters are available to munch on.
Van Till Family Farm Winery, 13986 Hwy C, Rayville, is
a family-owned winery that offers a scenic country setting
with full table service. Tuesday through Saturday, their wine
room and wine garden are open for tastings. Antipasto
trays, sandwiches, salads and fresh baked breads are also
available. On Fridays and Saturdays, their popular woodoven
baked pizza is available. Van Till hosts a variety of
events, including live music. They also offer a wine club for
those who fall in love with their wines and are interested in
special perks.
Fence Stile Vineyards and Winery, 31010 W. 124th St.,
offers wine with a few extras. They are the only winery in
the region with a wine cave. They offer tastings and tours
with space available to enjoy your drinks on the patio
overlooking their vineyards, in the Cellar Garden or in the
indoor Tasting Room. They also have outdoor firepits for
cozy gatherings. They offer many events, including special
wine and dine events. Fence Stile is also home to the “Fence
Stile Love Lock Wall” where love birds can celebrate their
love by symbolically locking it in. There are also “Adopt-A-
Vine” opportunities.
All three locations offer tastings, events and their own
unique styles, as well as offering private tours and event
space rental to provide you and your party with a beautiful
backdrop for any special event.

OF THE EARTH
farm distillery
If you’re feeling up to a little road trip, you’ll find a hidden gem
a little past the outskirts of town.
Of The Earth Farm Distillery is located in the gently rolling hills
of Ray County, near a town called Richmond.
The Pierce Family has been at their farm since the early 90s,
building and adding on to their farm and business in the years
since then.
Of The Earth contains a seven-acre orchard that includes 26
varieties of apples, two varieties of Asian pears and two varieties
of peaches. These fruits are used to produce premium spirits,
such as Apple Brandy. Other spirits produced by Of The Earth
include Grappa created from Missouri Norton grapes, Blackberry
and Raspberry Liqueur from fresh, local berries, and more. (see
list, left)
In 2018, the farm expanded to include increased production
facilities and a Tasting Room. The Tasting Room offers cocktails,
beer, wine, soda, and Charcuterie & Cheese Boards available for
purchase each weekend.
In addition to locally sourced and produced spirits, Of The Earth
Farm raises and produces grass-fed meats from their Berkshire
hogs and Katahdin sheep. Heritage pork, as well as cuts of lamb,
are available to purchase. Meat is sold at the farm, located at
17190 Hwy 13 In Richmond, at the Kansas City Farmer’s Market,
and online at www.oftheearthfarm.com. Fruits are also available
seasonally on a u-pick basis by appointment only.
Of the Earth Farm is open January and February by appointment
only, and March-December they are open Friday-Sunday, 12 p.m.
- 6 p.m. If you are looking to try some of their distillery products
outside of their business hours, visit Willow Spring Mercantile in
Excelsior Springs. More information on the Farm, their products,
and where to get them can be found at www.oftheearthfarm.
com.
Gorgeous Farm, lots to try, some very eclectic
unique experimental flavor profiles, that would make
great gifts. A worthwhile road trip for fresh air a
drink and a charcuterie board.

FISHING RIVER MARKET
If you’re fishing for a rare find, moseying into Fishing River
Market is the right move for you. Located at 414 S. Thompson
Ave., the unique store opened in 2018 after completing a total
renovation of the historic space it occupies. With over 15,000
square feet of space, it is packed with unique treasures, ranging
from vintage to modern and everything in between.
The interesting part of Fishing River Market is that you really
never know what you might find. After walking through the airy
space, one might pick up an antique victrola, stroll by a case of
homemade soap, take home a vintage toy to show your kids,
and load up a Mid-Century hutch to put in your dining room. No
matter what your tastes are, this antique lover’s paradise is sure
to reel you in with their enormous variety of unique treasures.
The owners of Fishing River Market liquidate estates and rent
booths so the space is made up of multiple vendors, including
local craftsman and artists selling their handmade merchandise
and specialty items.
During Second Weekend events in Downtown Excelsior
Springs, the shop hosts a Swap Meet in the 18,000 foot basement
of their space with extended hours. New items are always coming
and going so frequent visits are a must. New in 2020, the Market
will even be adding an ice cream parlor to the mix.
Spending time at Fishing River Market is sure to leave a smile
on your face - you may even find something you didn’t even
know you needed!

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS IS BURSTING AT THE SEAMS WITH CREATIVITY
For a town so small, there is a large pool of talent living
in and constantly passing through. From the art scene (see
page 38) to the music scene (see page 40) and beyond,
there is always an abundance of creativity on display for
your enjoyment.
The Slightly Off Broadway Theatre is a community theatre
located right in the heart of the historic Downtown district.
In 2020, the theatre is slated for six performances (see
schedule below) in a variety of genres. To make a full night
of it, purchase a dining and theatre package to enjoy dinner
at Ventana Gourmet Grill paired with tickets to a show.
More detailed information on each show, as well as a way to
purchase tickets, can be found at www.sobtheatre.org.
Down the road on Spring Street, Paradise Playhouse
Banquet Hall is an event rental space that frequently hosts
their own events, including Elvis impersonators, special
dance performances, and karaoke. Tickets typically include
a multi-course meal and a show.
The Excelsior Springs Cultural Guild is a local nonprofit
organization whose mission is to “inspire the arts.” The Guild
raises money through various events throughout the year to
be used to provide scholarships to local students pursuing
the arts. The Cultural Guild puts on a Murder Mystery Event
in February with two dates available. Each May, they also
bring back the Roaring 20s with “Gatsby Days,” an event
spread amongst several dates and events. Gatsby Days fun
includes vintage movies, a 1920s Fashion Show, a Youth Art
Show and more. Information on the ES Cultural Guild and
their events and contributions to the local arts community

Art is all around us
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS IS HOME TO ARTISTS, CREATORS
Over the last handful of years, Excelsior Springs has
become a bit of a haven for artists. The unique architecture,
historical components and picturesque landscapes are an
inspiration to those with creative minds.
The Historic Downtown District is now home to several
art galleries, studios and shops. The downtown itself is
adorned with beautiful, handpainted murals covering
multiple building sides, making a walk down the street feel
like stepping into a vintage postcard.
Main Spring Arts is a concept that was started by the
Excelsior Springs Arts Association. Main Spring Arts is a
place for artists to socialize, create, teach and learn through
classes. The space is a collective effort used for a variety of
artistic representation.
The second weekend of every month, downtown stays
open late for Second Weekend Art Crawls, where shops and
studios bring in featured artists and musicians to entertain
guests for the evening. Often, artists are brought in to
the galleries and other shops to showcase their work and
sometimes even provide demonstrations.
Between the galleries, art class offerings and unique
Mayan-inspired architecture of buildings such as the Hall
of Waters, every little thing about Excelsior Springs has a
tinge of artistic touch to it.

WE’VE GOT THE
Rhythm
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC
Excelsior Springs is bursting at the seams with talent, including
on the local music scene.
One of the most well-known go to spots for summer music
is the Wabash Blues Garden. Beginning each May and
lasting through September, many Saturday nights down on
Kansas City Avenue are spent listening to local blues and
rock acts as they grace the outdoor stage. The Blues Garden
schedule can be found at www.WabashBBQ.com. Many
popular acts have performed during the Blues Garden, including
Noe Palma, Anthony Gomes, Amanda Fish Band
and Four Fried Chickens and a Coke.
Wabash isn’t the only local establishment to host live music.
Dubious Claims Brewing Company, Willow Spring Mercantile,
Four Horses and a Dog, The Eagles Club, and Van Till
Winery are a few of the others known to host local bands
and acoustic groups.
Every festival and large event in Excelsior Springs brings
in bands, DJs and solo singers for performances and entertainment.
Second Weekends in downtown Excelsior Springs are often
littered with street musicians and special acoustic performances
within downtown businesses.
If you’re looking to BE the music instead of listening to
the music, The Atlas Saloon hosts karaoke on Friday nights.

Haunted Excelsior
Excelsior Springs is rich with ghost
stories and haunting tales. One of the
most allegedly haunted locations is the
Hall of Waters. Some claim to have seen
a beautiful woman in a red dress. Others
claim to have heard children laughing,
while others heard piercing screams.
Some say they have smelled things that
aren’t possible, like chlorine in the pool
that has been unused and empty for decades.
Still more swear they have been
touched on the shoulder or back by
something while touring the Hall.
If paranormal investigations are your
thing, you’re in luck. There are now Paranormal
Investigations every third Saturday.
The investigations are limited to 10-
15 people and last between three and a
half to four hours. T.R. Kennedy, the Hall
of Waters maintenance supervisor who
organizes the tours, says that evidence
has been captured on video and other
special technology.
Guests will be given a tour with a history
of the Hall and surrounding area
and given special paranormal investigative
equipment to hopefully gather
more evidence. Money from ticket sales
goes back to the Hall of Waters to help
fund building upkeep and restoration.
If you think you’re brave enough, visit
www.VisitExcelsior.com to book your
tickets.
Another famous stomping ground for
otherwordly beings is The Elms Hotel
& Spa. For years, staff and guests have
told tales of strange occurrences. Overturned
furniture, strange sounds, a child
apparition grabbing ankles of swimmers
in the lap pool - these are just a small
taste of the rumors that have circulated
the halls of the hotel. While staying at
The Elms, be sure to ask about the ghost
tour.
The Excelsior Springs Trolley hosts a
Paranormal Tour in October, taking participants
to both The Elms and the Hall
of Waters for an evening full of exploration.

“We recently had our wedding at The Montgomery and
couldn’t be happier with our experience. The venue is
beautiful, plenty of space for buffet line, dancing, and bar,
a great area for getting ready and doing hair and makeup,
and an awesome game room upstairs. Zedena was great
to work with, very friendly and professional and always
responsive to emails and messages. She had lots of great
ideas and suggestions and was very helpful in making our
vision for our wedding day come to life. Overall, we are
so glad we decided to go with The Montgomery for our
wedding venue and we would definitely recommend!”

live music kicks into gear, pausing for a spectacular fireworks show over
the Hall of Waters. This is just a small taste of what Waterfest is like -
you’ll have to attend to get the full effect!
Both weekend days are filled with activities and demonstrations,
contests and performances. On Saturday, the morning starts with
a pancake breakfast offered at Ventana Gourmet Grill followed by a
parade. A car show lines the side streets, with dozens of classic cars on
hand to admire. You will never run out of things to do or see, snacks to
munch on or people to have a great time with.

bbq & fly in on the river
FRIDAY-SATURDAY, AUGUST 14-15, 2020 • DOWNTOWN
Who doesn’t love the delicious smells of BBQ drifting through the air?
The BBQ & Fly-In on the River is an annual event that brings competition
BBQ teams from all over the country to Downtown Excelsior Springs to
face off against each other for who has the best smoked meat.
Smokers, tents and RVs line the downtown as competitors spend
the overnight hours perfecting their masterpieces. Evening festivities
include vendors, live music and fireworks. To get into the festival
grounds, entrants pay $5. Proceeds from the event are used toward
community needs and projects.
On Saturday morning, teams wake up bright and early (if they’ve
even slept!) to prepare their dishes for judging. Mid-afternoon, all teams
gather for the awards ceremony, where prizes are given in several meat
categories, as well as in pasta and dessert.
During the BBQ festival downtown, the Excelsior Springs Memorial
Airport also holds a Fly-In at the airport, giving demonstrations and
rides of small airplanes.

Parade has the crowd begin at Dubious Claims Brewing Co., decked
out in German Oktoberfest attire, and roll beer barrels through the
downtown streets, stopping at The Atlas and ending at Broadway Bar &
Grill at the other end of Broadway.
A new event added in 2019 is bed racing, a hilarious race where
teams get together, deck themselves out in creative themed costumes
and race through the streets on customized bed racers. The inaugural

Christmas
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
The holidays are truly a special time in Excelsior Springs. The community starts early with a Christmas kick-off the
Saturday before Thanksgiving. Downtown Excelsior transforms into a scene like out of a Hallmark movie, with lights lining
the tops of the historic buildings and festive decorations adorning the light poles.
Saturday, November 21, will mark the beginning of Christmastime in Excelsior Springs. Join in the fun during these
spectacular events:
CHRISTMAS PARADE
The Annual Lighted Christmas Parade has grown over the
years to become one of the most highly-anticipated events
of the year. Cars, floats and even people and animals set the
downtown aglow with Christmas spirit as they deck themselves
out in dazzling, twinkling lights. Prior to the parade,
the local elementary students gather to sing Christmas
carols.
LIGHTING CEREMONY
Immediately following the parade, the countdown begins!
The crowd will join together to mark the lighting of the
Mayor’s Christmas tree and the tops of the downtown businesses.
After the lighting, guests are invited into the Hall of
Waters to feast on delicious homemade cookies made by the
culinary students of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps.
HALL OF TREES
During the holiday season, the world’s longest water bar becomes
home to a glorious display of Christmas trees. Local
businesses and organizations decorate trees that line the
outskirts of the water bar. It’s truly a stunning sight, especially
in the evening hours. Donations are accepted to vote
for your favorite tree.
LANE OF LIGHTS
The Lane of Lights is a drive-through light display running
through East Valley Park. Turn down your headlights, crank
up the Christmas tunes and drive slowly through Lovers
Lane, checking out the festive displays and driving through
the red and green light tunnel at the end. Local groups
volunteer to host the Lane each night. Driving through the
Lane is free, but free will donations are accepted and appreciated.
MISTLETOE MARKET
Once the local Christmas spirit has amped up, there’s no
reason to hold off on that holiday shopping list any longer!
The day of the Christmas Kick-off, a holiday vendor market
is held in conjunction with the day’s celebrations. Artists,
crafters and other vendors set up shop in a downtown business
to show off and sell their goods. For a full list of vendors
closer to the event date, check out VisitExcelsior.com
THE ELF FACTORY
Get ready to thrill your little ones! The Elf Factory is a fantastic,
fun-filled event for the younger kids in the group.
An entire gymnasium transforms into a craft center where
volunteers assist the littles in creating holiday crafts and
gifts. Projects start at 50 cents and typically go up to $7. You
will leave with a bag full of creative treasures and best of
all - memories.
Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling
THE HOLIDAY HOMES TOUR
December brings more holiday fun with the Holiday Homes
Tour. During the homes tour, five area families open their
homes they’ve decked out in full holiday decor for participants
to tour.
TASTE OF CHRISTMAS
The Taste of Christmas is a tour of several local area businesses
where tasty holiday themed treats are given out for a
day of snacking and shopping.
HOLLY, JOLLY, TROLLEY!
The Excelsior Springs Chamber also hosts holiday themed
Trolley events like the Christmas Wine Tour and the Family
Holiday Lights Tour, in addition to offering transportation to
other holiday events. Find out details at estrolley.com.
But wait, there’s more...
In addition to the already mentioned events, there are many other oppotunities throughout the season to see Santa and partake
in Christmas fun, including the Candy Cane Hunt offered by the Parks & Rec Department. Be sure to check out the community
calendar link at VisitExcelsior.com to find out what else is going on!

EXPLORE
HAVE
YA’LL
HEARD
ABOUT
the water
Excelsior Springs, the city with the
magic waters, came to be as a modern
dwelling in the year 1880. At the time,
it was basically a wheat field. From the
Fishing River, a spring water with a
red coloring flowed, becoming Siloam
Spring and the first of the mineral waters
found in Excelsior Springs. It is the
only natural supply of ferro-manganese
mineral water in the United States
and one of only five known worldwide.
It’s also the spring that paved the way
for Excelsior Springs to become what
it is today.
The story goes like this: A local farmer,
Travis Mellion, was searching for
help for his daughter who was suffering
from tuberculosis. Mellion gave
his daughter water from the spring to
drink and bathe in. Within days, a drastic
improvement in her condition was
observed; in just weeks, she was cured.
People took notice. Another story of
the healing properties of the water
comes from Civil War Veteran Frederick
Kuglar, who decided to test the water
on an unhealed gunshot wound.
He, too, found relief and a full recovery
from the waters.
From there, the owners of the property
platted the valley and formed a
town. Within a year’s time, 200 houses
had settled into the hilly terrace for
newcomers to call home. Visitors who
had heard of the magic waters came in
droves, camping in tents and covered
wagons, to get their hands on the waters.
After the discovery of the first water,
more than 40 more mineral water
wells and springs were identified, including
sodium bicarbonate, calcium
bicarbonate and saline sulphur. One
of Excelsior’s claims to fame is that we
have more groupings of mineral water
than anywhere else in the world. IN
THE ENTIRE WORLD!
Before long, visitors from larger
metropolitan areas caught interest
in the springs. Suddenly, due to high
demand, boarding houses and hotels
were erected and stage lines were
put into place. Excelsior continued to
thrive with further construction and
expansion, even avoiding the worst
of the Great Depression thanks to our
status as a health resort oasis.
In the late 1950s, the good times
took a hit as some of the health benefits
were questioned and popularity of
resort spa towns declined.
Today, the springs still flow, although
access to them has diminished. City
and community civic groups are currently
working to restore mineral water
pavilions at as many sites as possible.
Our rich history helped make us what
we are, but we are even more than our
water. We have created a community
with deep roots in history and a huge
passion toward the future. We have
two feet moving forward while keeping
an eye on our past.
Our tourism industry is booming and
new businesses are opening up every
year, including a brand new brewery,
restaurants and retail space with more
to come in the future.
We pride ourselves on being a
unique, charming town rich in history,
culture and forward momentum. We
welcome you to our town and hope
you enjoy your time here!
If you’d like to learn more about our
history, you can read about it at www.

about it in person at the Excelsior

Where the past is present
While visiting downtown Excelsior Springs, be sure
to stop into the Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives .
Housed inside buildings that were once a bank and a hotel,
the Museum is structurally gorgeous, with high arched
decorative ceilings and the original bank vault still inside.
HIstory buffs and lovers of vintage architecture do not
want to miss seeing this gem of a building.
The historic building, with many intact bank fixtures, is
over 100 years old. A fun fact about the vault is that the
door weighs 20,000 pounds but is so delicately balanced
that it can be moved with just one finger. Other permanent
displays include murals painted on the walls, an old
loom still used by volunteers to weave rugs, and a military
room.
In addition to the everyday historical items for viewing,
exhibits and displays rotate regularly. Future displays include
tributes to the anniversaries of local events like the
Annual BBQ on the River and in 2021, the 200th Anniversary
of Missouri’s statehood.
At the museum, there are also several opportunities to
extend your research of the local area with census information,
yearbooks, newspapers and more. There is even a
Genealogy Room to help individuals trace their roots.
The concept of a museum is a simple one, but is not
enough to describe what the Excelsior Springs Museum
is. At its core, it’s a love story to the town it showcases, a
tribute to a town rich in a history no one wants to forget.
As it is not a tax based business, the museum is run solely
by volunteer efforts, so you’ll always find a friendly face
willing and excited to talk to you about all things Excelsior
Springs. Stop in on your way through town and learn how
the days of past have helped build the Excelsior Springs
we are today.
