BARRY GRANT has done what
many golfers might dream of
but few are brave enough to do.
The Westmorland resident has
built a five-hole mini-golf course
in his backyard.
Mr Grant hosted a golf tournament
on the greens on December
18. About 15 residents
battled it out to be crowned
Westmorland’s mini-golf champion.
Elizabeth O’Brien was the
winner on the day.
Said Mr Grant: “Everybody
had a heck of a lot of fun. I was
going to make it mandatory that
you had to have a glass in your
hand but that was going to slow
things down a bit.
Less youth
disorder
seen by
police in
Hoon Hay
• By Matt Slaughter
INCREASED POLICE presence
in Hoon Hay has resulted in less
youth disorder.
Sergeant David Knowles and
four officers will now be regularly
patrolling the streets of Hoon Hay.
Southern View reported last
month Senior Sergeant Roy Appley
made a commitment to increase
police presence in Hoon Hay after
attending a community meeting
where residents raised concerns
about crime and safety in the area,
particularly around disorderly
youth disturbing the peace, car
thefts and burglaries.
Senior Sergeant Appley said
since the extra police have started
in their roles he has seen less of
this sort crime and behaviour than
people said was happening in the
area at the meeting.
“It’s been my impression
that there’s been less of those
community problems. There
are still some issues around that
general Hoon Hay shopping area
. . . some more minor disorder
matters still occurring around
that shopping centre, which is still
concerning,” he said.
Near misses prompt safety plan
• By Matt Slaughter
A PLAN is being developed
to improve the safety of
pedestrians, including
Addington School pupils who
cross Brougham St to get to
school.
The New Zealand Transport
Agency has been working with
Addington School, the city council
and the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board to develop
the plan, which it expects to
present to the community for
feedback early this year.
Improvements to the two
school crossing points at Collins
St and Selwyn St will be made as
part of this plan.
The specifics of the other
safety improvements will be
announced once NZTA has
finalised its preferred option.
Southern View reported on
December 17 Addington School’s
board of trustees chairwoman Jo
Robertson said “There are near
misses often” on Brougham St
where one of its entrances is.
The board of trustees want
more signage saying ‘school’ to
be installed along this street,
where the speed limit is 60km/h.
A response from New Zealand
Transport Agency project manager
Haroun Turay, which came
BUSY: A plan being developed for measures to better protect
Addington School pupils crossing Brougham St should go to the
community for feedback early this year.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
after Southern
View’s deadline
for the previous
story said:
“Currently there
is a package of
improvements
Haroun Turay for the area
which need to be
developed from concepts into detailed
designs. Improvements to
the two school crossing points at
Collins St and Selwyn St are part
of this plan. Implementation is
anticipated for late 2020 subject
to funding.
“Transport Agency staff are
very aware that these two crossing
points are extremely busy
when pupils are using them, with
people pushing buggies, older
children, children on scooters
and cyclists all getting across
when they get the cross now
signal,” he said.
Mr Turay did not say if these
improvements will include installing
more ‘school’ signage but
said: “There are four signs warning
motorists that the school and
children are in the vicinity of
Brougham St – two on each side
of Brougham St, one for each
lane in effect in both directions.”
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter said it is good something
will be done to improve safety
measures along Brougham St but
she is concerned how effective
any option adopted will be, given
how busy traffic often is on it.
“What they can do with
Addington [School] must be limited.
I can’t imagine that they’ll
introduce a pedestrian way. All I
reckon they can do would be to
slow the traffic down.
“The first priority would
be the safety of the kids and
the families and we hope the
recommendation is viable,” she
said.
measures do you think
Bus trip to
highlight
issues
• By Matt Slaughter
A BUS TRIP will highlight some
of the issues affecting south
Christchurch to new community
board members.
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board members will take
a ride next month and visit areas
that need attention and also those
of general interest.
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter said these will include the
Hoon Hay and Worsleys Rds
intersection where traffic lights
are planned, Lincoln Rd, where
bus infrastructure development is
planned, the site where Manuka
Cottage’s new headquarters will
be built and the recently reopened
Sign of the Takahe.
Some parks, which are smaller or
more tucked away and may need attention
will also be visited, she said.
Ms Potter said it is important
the board takes the bus trip “to
put things in perspective.”
She said board members may
think their patch is the one that
needs the most work but they
should be made aware of what
is needed in other parts of the
Spreydon and Cashmere wards.
SAFER?: A plan to increase the number of police tasked with
regularly patrolling Hoon Hay has taken effect.
Police boost for Hoon Hay
•From page 1
However, Senior Sergeant
Appley said police will now be
able to pay closer attention to the
shopping centre and
the concerns of shop
owners.
The extra police will
travel from their base at
Hornby Police Station to
patrol Hoon Hay.
Senior Sergeant
Appley said as well as
this, another sergeant
and seven officers from
either Christchurch Central or
Christchurch South Police Stations
could be frequenting Hoon
Hay more often from this week
on.
In addition to this, 12 of the
70 people at the crime and safety
meeting signed up for community
patrol groups.
Hoon Hay Community Association
chairman Alastair Berney
Roy Appley
said he is not sure of the full effect
that more frequent policing in
his suburb has had so far but the
signs he has seen are promising.
“As far as I know,
there hasn’t been all
that much crime during
the holidays but that’s
only going on that I just
haven’t seen anything
go on Facebook or anything
like that.
“I have seen one or
two more police cars
going up and down the
road,” he said.
Sarah Clapp who works on
Hoon Hay Rd said having police
in the suburb more regularly
is a good thing, but she hopes
community watch groups will
also play a role in reducing their
workload.
“The average kid causing
groups doing it,” she said.
Tunnel to be drilled under Heathcote River
CLEANER: A tunnel will be drilled under the Heathcote River to put an end to the discharge of
treated wastewater into Lyttelton Harbour
A TUNNEL is set to be drilled
under the Heathcote River and
through Woolston on Saturday
as part of the Lyttelton Harbour
wastewater project.
A 535m pipeline will be pulled
through the tunnel under the
river and the Ferry Rd roundabout
by a method called directional
drilling.
It will then connect the
Alport Pl pump station to the
Heathcote Valley pipeline, the
final step of a project to connect
Lyttelton Harbour’s wastewater
system to the main Christchurch
system.
Part of Ferry Rd from St Johns
St to the Ferry Rd roundabout
will be closed to install the
pipeline from 8pm to 10am on
Sunday.
This work is part of the fourth
and final stage of the project,
that once complete, will put an
end to the routine discharge of
treated wastewater into Lyttelton
Harbour.
Up until now wastewater from
Lyttelton, Governors Bay and
Diamond Harbour has been
treated at wastewater treatment
plants in each of the townships
before being discharged through
outfall pipelines into Lyttelton
Harbour.
“This project, when completed,
will end the routine
discharge of treated wastewater
into Lyttelton Harbour, a fantastic
environmental milestone for
our city,” said city council head
of three waters and waste Helen
Beaumont.
The multimillion-dollar project
is being constructed in four
stages, with stages one and two
now complete and stage four set
for completion in early 2020.
In stage three, the existing
wastewater treatment plants at
Cashin Quay, Governors Bay
and Diamond Harbour are
being converted into pump
stations to pipe all of Lyttelton
Harbour’s wastewater through
the Lyttelton Tunnel.
The Cashin Quay treatment
plant has been converted and
the pump station is being tested
before commissioning. The new
Diamond Harbour pump station
is on track for commissioning
this month.
Work on the new pump station
on Lyttelton’s Simeon Quay
is now expected to be complete
by next October, due to a redesign
of the pump station, with
the entire wastewater network
commissioned in late 2020.
This pump station will be
the powerhouse that pumps
all of the harbour’s wastewater
through Lyttelton Tunnel and
the Heathcote Valley pipeline to
the main Christchurch system.
“Due to the intricate nature of
the pump station, we need to take
a bit more time to get the design
right,” Ms Beaumont said.
“It’s important to note this is
still being delivered well ahead
time and will meet council’s
target of ending the discharge of
treated wastewater into Lyttelton
Harbour by 2021.”
The city council is working
with Environment Canterbury,
Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Te
Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and
Lyttelton Port Company
and harbour communities
to improve water quality in
Lyttelton Harbour as part of the
Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour
Plan.
Pioneer
repairs
begin
REPAIRS TO Pioneer Recreation
and Sport Centre’s leaking roof
and air conditioning system have
begun, as part of a $1.2 million
project.
Said city council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox:
“The roof has been leaking so over
the next few months we’ll have
contractors replacing it.’
“As part of this work the contractors
will also be installing new
insulation in the roof to improve
the building’s energy efficiency.’’
Mr Cox said the facility will
stay open throughout the scheduled
repairs and the disruption to
users should be minimal.
“We are taking the opportunity
to also repair the ageing air conditioning
system and there may be
temporary loss in the gym, group
fitness room and spin studio.
Temporary air-conditioning units
will be utilised in these areas
and the team will keep users
informed,’’ he said.
The repair work is expected to
be completed by mid-May.
Way to remember former pets
• From page 1
“We had different people from
different walks of life at the party.
Through this, they all became
almost, if you like, instant friends
because they were either playing
with somebody that they don’t
know or they were cheering on
somebody that they were not
sure of or somebody that they do
know.”
Mr Grant said he was inspired
to set up a golf course in his backyard
“because it’s easy to do and
it’s fun.”
“I’ve done it before, so I had
experience, you might say.”
He said each hole has its own
small flag pole and is named after
one of his family’s former pets.
The first hole of the course is
Lizzy’s Leg, followed by Ruffie’s
Rump, Rastie’s Rise, Face’s Fall
and finally, Poos’ Pause. The start
of the course is named Smooch’s
Start.
Mr Grant said it has been
great seeing his wife Helen and
grandchildren Olive and Paige
Dooley having fun on the course.
He said he does not want
strangers to come onto his
property and start playing golf
without asking but “if somebody
came and said would you mind
if we had a round, I’d be quite
happy to do that.”
FUN: Barry and Helen Grant say Westmorland residents
and their family have enjoyed playing on their backyard
mini-golf course.
Events to promote key
dementia message
PEOPLE WITH dementia are
still themselves.
This will be the message
promoted during Dementia
Canterbury’s Walk for Dementia
on February 2 at Nga Puna Wai
Sports Hub.
This is part of the Still Me
campaign, which is aimed at
reducing the stigma associated
with dementia.
An estimated 7500 people in
Canterbury have dementia, and
with an ageing population, this
number is expected to triple by
2050.
A diagnosis of dementia can
bring a sense of relief because it
explains changes in behaviour,
but for many, it creates a fear of
what lies ahead.
Dementia Canterbury manager
Darral Campbell said whatever
the future holds, a person with
dementia is “still me” and can
live well.
Dementia Canterbury is
supporting the nationwide campaign,
co-ordinated by Dementia
New Zealand, with events in
Christchurch and Canterbury
including the Walk for Dementia
next month and a charity golf
tournament on March 6 at
Pegasus Golf and Sports Club.
Both events will raise money to
pay for the free support services
and education programmes offered
by Dementia Canterbury
throughout Canterbury and the
West Coast.
Ms Campbell said contrary to
what many people think, dementia
is not a normal part of ageing.
It affects people of all cultures,
intellectual abilities and lifestyles,
and while it is more common in
people over the age of 65, it can
also affect people as young as 35.
“The Still Me campaign has
been designed to help change the
way we think, feel and talk about
dementia. It is a reminder that
we need to see the person not the
condition and to recognise the
brave person who is supporting
them,” said Ms Campbell.
Stormwater discharge to be improved
Helen
Beaumont
AN environmentally-friendly
approach to managing how and
when stormwater is discharged
into Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula’s waterways has been
finalised.
Work is also
under way in the
Cashmere and
Worsleys valleys
to create storage
basins that will
reduce the flood
risk to properties
around
the lower and
middle sections
of the Heathcote River.
The basins will be contoured
to allow as much sediment as
possible to settle out prior to
water leaving the valley. This will
improve water quality in Cashmere
and the Heathcote River.
Similar stormwater management
systems are being installed in the
Avon and Styx river catchments.
The Environment Court has
approved a settlement of the city
council’s appeal against some
conditions in the Comprehensive
Stormwater Network Discharge
Consent that was granted by independent
hearing commissioners
appointed by Environment
Canterbury in June.
“The settlement of this appeal
represents a major milestone in
the management of stormwater
in Christchurch and means
all stormwater discharges will
now be managed under a single
consent,’’ said city council head
of three waters and waste Helen
Beaumont.
“This means there will be clear
standards across the network for
the management of stormwater,
which should result in a better
environmental outcome,’’ she
said.
Environment Canterbury’s
chief operating officer Nadeine
Dommisse said: “The consent
supports the collaborative
Canterbury Water Management
Strategy approach between
councils, Ngāi Tahu and the
community to improve outcomes
for water in Canterbury,
and a similar approach is being
taken for other stormwater
network discharges throughout
Canterbury.”
Said Ms Beaumont: “We are
investing millions of dollars into
improving our management of
stormwater so that we improve
the quality of the water entering
the waterways and reduce the
risk of flooding.
“In Wigram, for example, we
have lowered a large area of the
Canterbury Agricultural Park to
create a flood storage basin with
four hectares of wetland. In a
one-in-100-year storm event, the
basin will be able to store around
FLOODED:
The approach
to managing
stormwater
discharge in
Christchurch
and Bank
Peninsula will
be improved.
590 million litres of water – the
equivalent of 236 Olympic-sized
swimming pools – which means
there’s less risk of properties
flooding along the upper reaches
of the Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River.
“The new wetland area provides
a habitat for a number
of threatened species and will
also help to clean the water as it
leaves the basin and flows into
the Heathcote,’’ she said.
Stormwater – any rainwater
that falls on roads, paths and
other hard surfaces – picks up
pollution and flows via drains
into waterways. If the discharge
is contaminated, this affects the
health and water quality of local
streams and rivers.
Fountain
installed
at pool
A NEW water toy has been
installed at Pioneer Recreation
and Sports Centre’s leisure pool.
The toy, which has replaced a
slide removed earlier this year
for safety reasons, is a cylinder
shape – standing 1.68cm high. It
shoots water up into the air like
a sprinkler.
Centres operations manager
Ben Rzoska said facility users
have embraced the fountain.
“It’s a great replacement for
the slide, which needed to be
removed because of stagnant
water that was pooling under it.
Kids are back in the leisure pool,
splashing about and having fun
under the water spray, he said.
“We want to say a big thanks
to the community for their patience
while the installation was
carried out.”
Pioneer closed for a week in
early December to allow for the
toy to be installed. During the
closure period, the pool was also
drained and tiles replaced. Time
was needed for the grout to dry
and the pool to be re-filled and
heated.
Swainson rolls
with the punches
• By Jacob Page
WOOLSTON BOXER Trevor
Swainson has all the motivation
he needs heading into 2020.
After two consecutive silver
medals at the national championships,
the 26-year-old is keen
to ensure the third time will be
the charm.
Late last year, Swainson was
named on the long list of potential
athletes for the Tokyo Olympic
Games in July and August
this year.
Swainson admits his Olympic
goal is still a long-shot but being
put on the list and his desire to
win a national title had motivated
him to keep training hard
during the holiday period.
“The training for me is fun,
I enjoy it,” the under-81kg elite
boxer said.
“It makes me a better boxer.
Whether I’m training by myself
in the gym or looking at You-
Tube videos on how to improve
my technique, then it is all positive
for me.
“Knowing I was that close
to the Olympics kept the fire
burning for me,” he said. “That’s
a once in a lifetime type of
achievement.”
title in 2020.
Swainson first started boxing
when he was 12-years-old but returned
to the sport competitively
eight years ago.
“I’ve always enjoyed the sport
and competing but I always want
to get better,” he said.
“I do think about winning a
national title a lot and that’s a big
goal for me this year.
“Hopefully I will have the opportunity
to fight overseas more
and represent my country.”
He said the Olympic dream
could still be burning in four
years time.
“I’ll only be 30 so if I’m still in
good shape and active then you
never know.”
Woolston coach Holly Sullivan
Tasty Bites
Cooking rice properly is a no grainer
By Ian Knott
Rice has the ability to
transform a relatively
simple dinner into a
stunning feast. It’s readily
available, inexpensive,
filling, and the perfect
blank slate for the base
of many classic dishes
A rice cooker is great if you
cook rice regularly and if you’ve
got ample storage space. The
microwave is an option, too –
there are many pre-packaged
options for those who are short
on time and can afford the
premium price of convenience.
But you needn’t splash out on
any special gadgets or ingredients
to serve up a pot of beautifully
tender, and fluffy rice. The
stove-top method is not as hard
as you might think – as long as
you remember a couple of simple
rules.
Not all rice is equal and should
be treated differently if you
want to get the best out if your
preferred grain.
Below, I’ll detail how to cook
the perfect pot of white longgrain,
brown, and aromatic
(basmati or jasmine) rice.
All the methods use one cup of
uncooked rice, which will make
three cups when cooked.
White long-grain rice
Step 1: Rinse, rinse, rinse.
Step one is always the same.
Unless you want a pot of lumpy
wallpaper paste, you must rinse
the starch off your rice.
STAPLE: Rice is easy to
cook, but also easy to get
wrong. Make sure you
rinse your rice well to
avoid it going gluggy.
Put the uncooked rice in a finemesh
strainer and run it under
the cold tap until the water runs
clear.
Step 2: Bring 1½ cups of water
to the boil in a small saucepan
with a lid, over a high heat.
Step 3: Add the rice and some
salt. If you’re feeling indulgent,
you can also add a tablespoon
of butter at this point. It will add
a layer of richness, but is purely
optional.
Step 4: Cover and reduce the
heat to low. Cook for 18-20min
until the water is absorbed.
Important: Don’t lift the lid to
peek, and absolutely don’t stir the
rice during the absorption stage.
This will break down the grains
and release more starch, leaving
you with a gluggy pot of white
couscous.
Step 5: Remove from the heat
and let it stand, covered for
10min. The steam will finish off
the cooking process. Uncover and
fluff your perfect rice with a fork
before serving.
Brown rice
Step 1: Repeat after me: rinse,
rinse, rinse.
Step 2: In a covered medium
saucepan bring eight cups of
water to the boil.
Step 3: Add the rice and boil,
uncovered, for 30-35min until
the rice is tender but just a little
chewy.
Step 4: Drain the rice in a
strainer and return it to the
saucepan. Cover and let it steam
(off the element) for a further
10min.
Step 5: Add salt to taste and
butter (if you wish). Fluff with a
fork and serve.
Aromatic rice
Step 1: All together now . . .
rinse, rinse, rinse!
Step 2: Boil the kettle/jug.
You’ll need two cups of boiling
water for basmati rice or 1½ cups
for jasmine rice.
Step 3: In a small saucepan,
heat some butter and/or oil until
it’s just starting to shimmer. Add
the uncooked, rinsed rice and
some salt to the pan and stir
until the water from rinsing has
evaporated and the rice is coated
in the butter/oil.
Continue to saute, stirring
constantly (you don’t want it to
stick and burn), until a starchy
film forms on the bottom of the
pan – about 2min. Your rice
should have a slightly toasty
aroma at this point.
Step 4: Carefully add the
boiling water and reduce the heat
to low. Cover the saucepan and
cook until the water is completely
absorbed – about 18min.
Step 5: Take the pan off the
heat and let it steam, covered for
a further 10min. Fluff with a fork
and serve.
