As we begin to celebrate

Catholic Schools

Week on Sunday,

January 26, 2020,

the theme: “Catholic

Schools: Learn, Serve,

Lead, Succeed” definitely

applies to the

Catholic academies

and parish schools

Dr. Chadzutko

within the Diocese of

Brooklyn.

Today, the evangelistic mission of Catholic education

incorporates many priorities in addition

to strengthening the Catholic Identity within the

Catholic academies and parish schools.

The priorities of Catholic education include:

academic excellence, building enrollment and

class capacity, sustaining the academy governance

model, seeking new ways of funding the academies

and parish school finances and ensuring that our

academies and parish schools are preparing their

students for future leadership throughout the area.

Moreover, Catholic academies and parish

schools within the Diocese of Brooklyn continue

to prioritize strong support for the New Evangelization.

Catholic Identity

Catholic Identity in our Catholic academies and

parish schools is always a priority here within the

Diocese of Brooklyn. The centrality of the faith

guides Catholic educators each day, as they diligently

educate the children of God, who have been

entrusted to our academies and parish schools by

their parents.

In addition, Catholic academies and parish

school communities live the faith through daily

prayer and life in the sacraments. Through the pastoral

assistance plan, all pastors within the Diocese

of Brooklyn are involved in the mission of Catholic

education through their presence at liturgies,

prayer services and teaching of religion classes.

Our Catholic faith is unlike other classroom subjects

because it is not purely academic. Our faith is

infused into all academic areas and our faith forms

us. Pope Francis recognizes this when he notes that

“Catholic schools, which always strive to join their

work of education with the explicit proclamation

of the Gospel, are a most valuable resource for the

evangelization of culture.” (EG.134).

Throughout my years, I have met many leaders

within our diocese who have been formed by the

faith through Catholic education. There is great

hope and promise for the future, as Catholic school

children become the future leaders of our Church

and country. I firmly believe that “faith” is part of

our Catholic academy and parish school culture, as

is lived each day in the work done by our priests,

principals, faculty, staff, parents and students.

Catholic academies and parish schools within

the Diocese of Brooklyn have a great commitment

to academic excellence that is rooted in the faithbased

mission of Catholic education. Over the past

number of years, we have continued our quest for

academic excellence and 21st-century learning.

Academic Excellence

Without diminishing Catholic Identity, pursuit

of academic excellence has been a major priority.

Through the implementation of the New York State

Common Core Learning Standards and participation

in the New York State Assessments for ELA and

Math, we have prepared our students for the educational

challenges that they will face in secondary

school and college.

Over the next couple of years, our Catholic

Academies and parish schools will adopt the Next

Generation Standards in English Language Arts

and Math. With the support of our local Catholic

Colleges and Universities, we will guarantee that

our principals and teachers will be prepared to integrate

these standards into the learning environments.

Our partnerships with our Catholic high schools

continue to expand and we are able to provide our

students with advance courses and programs.

Our principals and teachers have dedicated

themselves to professional development opportunities

to ensure that they have an understanding of

the necessary tools and resources to meet the educational

needs of all our students.

Through the generous support of the St. Elizabeth

Ann Seton Trust, 42 Catholic Academies and

parish schools have state of the art STEM Labs.

These STEM Labs (Science, Technology, Engineering

and Math) provide students in Grades K-8 with

an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities to

support the curriculum.

Many of the Catholic academies are in the process

of attaining accreditation through AdvancED.

This process allows the Catholic academy community

to assess their learning environment and be

evaluated by an outside group of educators. The

rigor of the accreditation process further allows

our academy communities to be schools of excellence.

In addition, some of our Catholic academies are

on the pathway to an Absolute Charter from the

New York State Board of Regents - another milestone

for some Catholic academies and path to continuous

improvement in the academic programs.

Pursuit of academic excellence and knowledge is

a priority. Through partnerships with various agencies,

collaboration with the secondary schools,

colleges and universities, and the guidance of the

staff of the Office of the Superintendent - Catholic

School Support Services, we are in a position to

continue our efforts toward achieving the goals associated

with academic excellence.

Technology Initiatives

We must continue to provide our students with

the basic tools necessary to be successful in this

time of ever-changing technology. Through effective

partnerships with DeSales Media Corporation,

our Catholic academies and parish schools have

been provided with a number of technology initiatives

that have greatly enhanced their technology

infrastructure.

Through various programs and effective local

planning by the academy boards, our principals

have been able to provide students with: iPads,

laptops, SMART Boards, SMART Tables and impressive

multimedia labs. The goal is to continue to

ensure that our academies and parish schools are

equipped with the technology that will allow our

students to be successful in the future.

DeSales Media Corporation continues to support

our efforts in funding various technology initiatives

including iPads to students and within the

next couple of weeks the opportunity to participate

in the Apple Distinguished Schools Program.

Through the continued generosity of the St. Elizabeth

Ann Seton Trust, we are able to provide our

students with innovative programs that enhance

the academic program.

Financial Assistance

In addition, the efforts of Futures in Education

are essential to the support of Catholic education

within the Diocese of Brooklyn. Through Futures’

generous support, over $7 million is given to more

than 5,000 students for need-based scholarships.

Our parents make the sacrifice each day to enroll

their children in the academies and parish schools

within the Diocese of Brooklyn. We recognize all

of their efforts to support Catholic education and

their desire to ensure that their children are prepared

for the future. As the primary educators,

parents play a vital role in the partnership among

parish, academy/parish school and the home.

Servant of All

Service to others is a key tenet of our Catholic

faith, for Christ tells us that “if anyone wishes to be

first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all”

(Mark 9:35).

Just as our parishes do a great deal of service

work within their communities, our academies and

parish schools are partners in this important work.

Also of important service is the work accomplished

by the boards of directors in our academies.

This new ministry for lay leadership is essential to

the success of the mission of Catholic education

within the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Through their time, talent and expertise, they

provide service to our academy governance model.

Their work continues to build our communities of

learning and all their efforts is advancing the mission

of Catholic education within the Diocese of

Brooklyn.

As we look at Catholic education within the Diocese

of Brooklyn, I would like to highlight some

final reflections:

• We offer an education that combines Catholic

faith and teachings with academic excellence.

• We partner with parents in the faith formation

of their children.

• We set high standards for student achievement

and help them succeed.

• We provide a balanced academic program

that integrates faith culture and life.

• We use technology to effectively enhance education.

• We instill in students the value of service to

others.

• We prepare students to be productive citizens

and future leaders.

• We cultivate a faculty and staff who are dedicated,

caring and effective.

This Catholic Schools Week, I ask readers to

schedule a visit to one of the excellent Catholic

academies and parish schools in Brooklyn and

Queens to witness and experience how they truly

are communities of faith, knowledge and service.

May they continue to grow and flourish all the

more, and may God bless all their work, so that it

is realized in the lives of the students and families

throughout this great city.

Religion

Thanks to a recent grant, St. Andrew Avellino

is now considered an Embassy School in

the Arts. An expanded program includes concentrated

studies in music and art, including

band for students through the eighth grade.

The students are exposed to after-school

The art program hosts an exhibit annually

With the start of this new decade, Immaculate

Conception Catholic Academy in Astoria is

grateful for a past year full of milestones and

achievements.

Most notably, this school celebrated 95

years of learning, leading and living in faith!

On Dec. 8, ICCA’s teachers, current and past,

and administration, alumni, parents, community

representatives and friends gathered at

Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows to

celebrate the 95th anniversary. More than 300

guests renewed old friendships and made new

ones during an afternoon of reminiscing and

camaraderie. Guests, including 19 Holy Union

Sisters, traveled from all parts of the country

to participate in this event that celebrated the

rich legacy and tradition that is Immaculate

Conception Catholic Academy!

In 2019, ICCA welcomed a new technology

teacher/coordinator who has introduced

students to keyboarding, formatting documents,

notetaking, researching, and coding; a

guidance counselor who works with classes

from kindergarten through eighth grade on

programs developed by PDHP (Program for the

Development of Human Potential), and a new

middle school Science teacher.

ICCA is the first Catholic elementary/middle

school to establish a partnership with the

American Debate League and send a debate

team into competition against 23 public

schools. In fact, at their first tournament on

Dec. 14, ICCA’s team took fourth place Beginner

Division top school, and produced three

top speakers in this category!

Executive Director of the American Debate

League, Richard Connelly, stated, “ICCA is a

great addition to the American Debate League

and they accomplished a great feat by having

the fourth best school in their division and capturing

the eighth and 13th speakers out of over

70 speakers in their first tournament ever. I

believe that the ICCA debate team will soon be

one of the top debate teams in the American

Debate League.”

The school also expanded enrichment

programs both during and after school with an

emphasis on the Arts giving students several

opportunities to explore the wonderful world

of music and dramatic arts. Besides the Paul

Effman Band and Violin program for students

in grades three through eight, ICCA introduced

ukulele lessons for students in kindergarten

and first grade. Kindergarten through fourth

grade students started working on and rehearsing

for a production of the Wizard of Oz,

while middle school students have absorbed

themselves in producing a 60’s play titled,

Turning Point. Fourth, sixth and eighth grade

students are enjoying the Stages on the Sound

Performing Arts program where they are

immersed in playwriting, the works of Shakespeare

and stop-motion animation.

In addition to the Annual Art Festival in April,

the school displays and celebrates students’

dynamic art projects at Art for Charity in

January.

Catholic Schools Week 2020 kicks off with

an open house on Sunday, Jan. 26, from 11

a.m.–12:30 p.m. This will continue during the

week, Jan. 27-31, with a Daily Morning Mingle

from 8-8:30 a.m. and open house from 8:30-

10:30 a.m.

This year’s activities will include a Scholastic

Book Fair, the annual Religion Bee, Science

Fair and Multicultural Night! Art for Charity will

display all the beautiful student artwork that

has been taking place in the art studio and

classrooms. New for this year, ICCA will introduce

a Living Museum where middle school

students will become historical or famous

figures, characters, saints, etc.

As the student population continues to

grow and change, ICCA remains committed

to providing its students with instructional

excellence and individualized attention while

promoting intellectual curiosity, personal

Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL)

ensures students continue to receive an academically

rigorous education designed to promote

21st Century skills. This commitment to supporting

all learners with technology from PreK

to Grade Eight is made possible by the recently

renovated, state-of-the-art, STEM Lab, Computer

Lab, WiFi enabled building, interactive website,

SMART boards in all classrooms, SMART Table,

Rigorous Academic Instruction

The academy empowers students to reach their

Heights, each morning students and faculty

gather with Father William Hoppe, the pastor,

and Raffaele Corso, principal, for morning

prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance and the

Star-Spangled Banner. As Corso dismisses

each class, he reminds everyone to be a good

neighbor to each other.

This school year, St. Joan of Arc has adopted

the saying as one of its mottos. “One of the

first readings we shared as a school community

this school year was that Jesus teaches

us to be a good neighbor to each other. Each

morning I remind the students and faculty that

we should be good neighbors,” said Corso.

Banners hang throughout the school displaying

the motto. Students have embraced the

motto as well.

Sofia M., Class of 2020, says “Being a good

neighbor means being respectful to others

around me. It means to love and care for others.”

The school has begun to be good neighbors

by collecting food for the parish food pantry.

In November and December, the students

and faculty collected over 500 items for

the food pantry. Seventh and eighth grade

physical education.

St. Elizabeth’s offer an accelerated program

that prepares middle school students

to take both the Integrated Algebra I Regents

as well as the Earth Science Regents. For

students who need extra support, it offers Title

I Services in literacy and math, ELL services,

full-time SETSS teachers, speech therapy and

guidance counselors.

Proud of its Catholic heritage, the academy

offers students many opportunities to live their

faith. Our students attend Mass often and

participate in many other religious ceremonies.

This year, students have shown their Christian

charity in many ways; they have collected

food for local pantries, donated items to

Hour Children for Christmas, and supported

Midnight Run, an organization that helps serve

the homeless. Each year, the school choir

entertains residents at a local nursing home.

Town Hall. Students are able to receive homework

Once a week, Paul Effman Band is available

after school for students interested in learning

to play an instrument. The program is available

for students in grades three through eight with

reasonable rates for lessons. The band students

participate in the Christmas and Spring

Concerts.

St. Sebastian offers a free Pre-K for All program

to students turning four by Dec. 31. The

program runs daily from 8 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.,

providing instruction by licensed teachers who

have earned master’s degrees in Early Childhood

Education. Classroom activities include

beginner science experiments, hands-on math

experiences, creative art projects, and literary

enriched activities. Children have access to

an indoor play space and outdoor playground.

Each day at Futures in Education, we are

blessed to learn many stories that demonstrate

that access to a quality, Catholic education

changes lives. Through our financial aid

programs, made possible by the support of our

generous donors, we work hard to make the

opportunity of Catholic education a reality for

the families we serve.

At our fundraising gala this past year, we

had the pleasure of hearing from a family who

left their country to seek refuge in the United

States. They settled in Queens and joined the

neighborhood parish where they learned about

the local Catholic school. Struggling financially,

the parents did not think they could cover

tuition for four children. Then, they learned

about Futures in Education.

Compelled by their faith and desire to

continue a history of Catholic education that

existed for generations in their family, they

applied for tuition assistance. They made the

necessary sacrifices to pay their share of the

tuition and were blessed to receive an award

to fund the remainder. In the mom’s speech

at the gala, she expressed her gratitude to the

donors, who helped her children access a quality

Catholic education filled with the teachings

of our faith, in a loving and nurturing environment.

The mission at St. Patrick Catholic Academy

in Bay Ridge is to lead by example as Christ did

when teaching, learning and serving.

St. Patrick is a student-centered community

where students learn to lead by example. Starting

in the Nursery Program (PK3), all students

have the opportunity to attend art, music, gym,

Italian, and library classes. Fourth through

eighth graders effectively use 1:1 devices. Junior

High students have a choice of language

class and prepare for NYS Algebra 1 and Living

Environment Regents Exams. Each classroom

to meet the needs of each student. Blended

learning is prevalent in grades four through

eight. Collaboration and teamwork are taught

to facilitate group work and students are

involved in establishing guidelines for behavior.

Rubrics are used to communicate with

students what is important and to assess their

understanding.

Last year, 100% of the eighth grade passed

the New York State Algebra I Regents Exam,

and 90% of the seventh and eighth grade

passed the Living Environment Regents

eighth grade mastered the NYS Science exam.

The curriculum at St. Patrick is rigorous and

challenging.

H.S. (IPAX) is a

dynamic opportunity

for rising juniors in

the Honors Program to

learn about a wide variety of

careers in hands-on, real-world experiences

with talented professionals. Designed to help

potential career paths, IPAX places students

with mentors (who are quite often Xaverian

alumni) in their desired professional areas of

Senior Logan Deitchmann, who interned

with TradeMas, Inc. this past summer, praised

his experience in the program. He recounted:

“My internship with TradeMas Inc. was way

more than just fulfilling hours for a school

assignment. I never thought I would be able to

say that at 17 years old I would be on the floor

of the Stock Exchange, shadowing my mentor.

Getting that real-life experience is something

that has really only made me realize that this is

what I want to pursue after high school – and

Likewise, Christy Fratto ,’20, had an equally

their social media, operate in communications,

and handle their website. My relationship with

AI did not end once IPAX did. I currently am

leading an upcoming project for which I will

be creating and teaching English lesson plans

to underprivileged girls in Lucknow, India, via

an online partnership. This project will impact

approximately 1,200 girls.”

In support of its innovative learning atmosphere,

robust extra-curricular and athletic

programs, engaging faith in action opportunities,

atmosphere, St. Edmund Prep is pleased

to announce the creation of Transforming

Through Tradition - The Strategic Plan for St.

Edmund Prep.

The development of this multi-year strategic

plan entailed a year-long process of engaging

diverse groups of the school community to

seek feedback and ideas to help continue the

advancement of St. Edmund Prep. The 2019

spring semester included a comprehensive

analysis of strengths, opportunities, aspirations

and results across five components

of the school: Mission and Catholic Identity,

Academic Excellence, Operational Vitality,

Governance and Leadership, and Climate and

Culture. These areas align themselves with

the National Standards and Benchmarks for

Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary

Schools.

The result of this process is a strategic plan

which includes 70 priorities to be implemented

math and science classes that teach about the

universe as manifest in the laws of physics;

with history classes that will open a door to the

past as a way to understanding the present;

religion classes discovering Faith in the Media

take two years of both Latin and either French,

A service learning program is integrated into

all theology courses. All students participate

in annual retreats and days of service to the

outside community. Interested students may

also serve as retreat leaders, extraordinary

intramural tennis and the following varsity

sports: basketball, soccer, softball, swimming,

Since 2015, Fordham Prep students have visited

and worked on six continents as part of its

Global Education Program. The program is designed

to raise student awareness of the world

outside their own environment through the

exploration of different and diverse cultures in

the world community.

Fordham Prep recently

launched a new

iSTEAM program to

give students the opportunity

to imagine,

design, create, and

discover in the spirit

of the school’s Ignatian

identity for the

purposes of social

justice and finding

God in all things to

benefit humankind.

iSTEAM activities

include coding, medical research, eSports,

aviation, engineering, and cyber security.

Students also compete in 41 individual

teams in 18 varsity sports including baseball,

basketball, crew, golf, tennis, lacrosse, squash,

and swimming and diving. Many teams take

advantage of Fordham University’s NCAA Division

1 athletic facilities. They can also take

part in over 70 clubs and activities including

aviation, dramatics, student government, and

speech and debate.

Fordham Prep is located on the historic Rose

Hill Campus in the Bronx alongside Fordham

University, 10 miles from the Whitestone and

11 miles from the Throgs Neck Bridges.

Experiential Learning
