PEGASUS POST
The hunt for
elusive smell
• From page 1
“We had some breaks in
meeting to be young wives and
mothers. We are all either 83 or
84 now, but were only 14 when
these special friendships were
made. We meet each two to three
months and stay in touch. We
are still the same women,” Mrs
Gillespie said.
Mostly the group meet at each
others homes for afternoon tea
and each bring a plate of food to
share.
This way they can laugh and
make as much noise as they like,
Mrs Gillespie said.
Three of the group have
passed away, including most
recently, Fay Rabone-Powell, in
December.
“It was a month to the day
that we met (this month). She
badly wanted to come too, she
knew all about it. But she had
been in and out of hospital,
sick. We use to go to Fay’s quite
a bit, she had a big home,” Mrs
Gillespie said.
The group were in a small class
of 21 at Avonside, where most
had 30 pupils, something they
believe may have contributed to
their close friendships.
“I don’t know what the secret
is; it is very special, especially for
the women who are widowed.
I just want to tell any young
SCHOOL DAYS: Form
class 3CB at Avonside
Girls’ High School in
which the group of
friends first met.
Long friendships formed
people, it’s difficult when
you have young children but
suddenly it becomes very special.
Your school friends, you have
to make a point of staying in
touch,” Mrs Gillespie said.
Between them, they have 26
children, 54 grandchildren and
10 great-grandchildren, with
another on the way.
“We have been quite
productive haven’t we,” Mrs
Gillespie said.
The women were placed in a
commercial course after school
and most ended up as secretaries,
in banks, law firms or offices,
some even ended up working for
the same companies.
“It’s always been bad but
probably but more so since the
earthquakes and it has made me
wonder over time whether it is
actually the Bromley ponds or
whether there is another cause
for it,” she said.
ECan started a specific
programme to look at odours
about 12 months ago in efforts to
solve the mystery.
Its senior manager for service
delivery Nick Daniels said there
had been more than 300 odour
related complaints within those
12 months.
“They’re quite literally a
number of causes out there
... food processing industries,
composting industry, there’s also
a wastewater treatment plant and
transfer station,” Daniels said.
“So there are a number of
potentially odour and emitting
sources out in Bromley that we
need to try and get on top of.”
Daniels said work done with
Canterbury District Health
Board had shown there was no
health risk associated with the
odours, and he hoped smart
phone apps could be used as a
tool to help find the culprits.
Business can also be penalised
for releasing unpleasant odours.
ECan will host feedback sessions
on the apps next month and report
back to the local community
board in mid to late March.
New shoe shop offers even more
‘fashionable, functional footwear’
Newly opened, the Shoe Room in Riccarton Road,
just across from the Bush Inn Centre, offers an
extensive range of specialised footwear for people
that have foot problems, difficulty finding shoes or are
simply looking for stylish, comfortable shoes.
This bright, modern and attractively laid out store is
owned by podiatrist Charlotte Russell, who also owns
and operates the podiatry clinic Feet First in Upper
Riccarton. The Shoe Room was previously part of the
clinic, but increasing demand for “fashionable, functional
footwear” meant they needed to expand, Charlotte says.
As a stand-alone store with much more space, the
Shoe Room is able to offer an extended range of brands
and styles to accommodate feet requiring specific
features, such as wider, deeper or more narrow fitting
and for those who are on their feet all day.
business owner Charlotte Russell, centre,
and shop manager Maxine.
At present, the majority are women’s shoes, but the
men’s range will be expanded with the arrival of the
winter season collection, Charlotte says.
Brands on display include Mephisto from France,
which is exclusive to the Shoe Room in New Zealand,
Australian brands Frankie 4, Revere and Propet, and
Taos from the United States.
The shop has been thoughtfully designed with seating
and large mirrors to the side of the display areas, so
customers have plenty of space to try shoes on and
walk around in them. Shop manager Maxine and shop
assistant Wendy both have extensive experience in
footwear, so can assist and advise customers on the
best fit and style to suit their needs.
“This is a point of difference for the Shoe Room –
having people who know about shoe fitting to help our
customers,” Charlotte says. “We will also be having a
