Visa ban against
Nigerians ill conceived,
Lai Mohammed tells US
LONDON
(UK)—
MINISTER of
Information and Culture,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed has
said that the speculated
plan by the United States
government to add Nigeria
to its existing list of visa
travel ban countries was ill
conceived.
It added that though the
report was speculative, but
if it turns out to be true, the
government will respond
comprehensively.
Mohammed stated this,
yesterday, in London
during an interview
session with Reuters.
The minister is in London
to officially engage with
international media and
other think tank.
He said, “On the issue of
the travel ban our position
is that it is still speculative
because we are yet to be
communicated. When we
are communicated we will
respond comprehensively.
“However, in our view it
is not well thought out but
based largely on negative
narratives spread by
naysayers.
“I know that we are
working very well with our
neighbours to ensure that
terrorism is addressed. We
are working with the
international community
FG crafting a 10-year National
Development Plan — MINISTER
By Emma Ujah
A F BUJA—THE
e d e r a l
Government is crafting a
10-year National
Development Plan, the
Minister of State, Budget
and National Planning,
Prince Clem Agba, has
revealed.
He spoke at a meeting
with the Japanese
Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenitpotentiary to
Nigeria, Yutaka Kikuta, in
Abuja, yesterday,
according to Victoria Agba-
Attah, Director of
Information in the Ministry
of Budget and National
Planning, in a statement.
Agba disclosed that the
National Development
Plan would be broken down
into two 5-year medium
term plans, from which the
annual budgets would be
drawn from.
He expressed
government’s readiness to
make the process of the
national development plan
very inclusive.
The minister claimed that
the Federal Government
had made tremendous
progress in its effort at
repositioning the nation’s
economy and working to
sustain the January-
December Budget cycle.
“We want to sustain what
happened last year in terms
of early budget passage,
we will continue to work
with the National Assembly
to repeat the feat. If we fail
to repeat it, it means that
including the European
Union, EU and the US.
“Our advice to the US is
that it should have a
rethink on the issue
because any travel ban is
bound to affect investment
and growth in the country
and those who will be
affected are the most
vulnerable people in
Nigeria.”
Last week, there were
reports that the Donald
Trump administration
planned to add Belarus,
Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan,
Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan
and Tanzania to the list of
countries on US visa travel
ban.
Speaking on the border
closure, the minister told
Reuters that Nigeria took
the hard decision because
the neighbours, notably
Benin Republic and Niger
Republic, failed to respect
the ECOWAS treaty on
transit of goods.
“Not only that they are
sabotaging the economy of
the country but also the
security of the nation was
being threatened.”
“Under the guise of
smuggling rice, a lot of
small arms and light
weapons are being
smuggled into the country.”
Mohammed said the
what happened was just a
chance or a fluke but if we
do, it means that we have
a process and a plan that
we intend to build on,” the
Minister said.
Agba commended the
Government of Japan for
the development assistance
and the cordial relationship
that has existed between
the two countries in the
past 60 years and promised
to do everything in his
power to ensure that the
plans were realized.
The Ambassador said the
meeting was to discuss
ways of crystallizing Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe’s
promise of assisting to
strengthen the National
Center for Disease Control,
NCDC, with a grant of
2billion Japenese Yen, as
well as support to the
National Defence College.
Wike/Dickson’s feud about oil wells
— SEN JIBRIN
By Dirisu Yakubu
A
B U J A —
CHAIRMAN,
Board of Trustees, BoT, of
the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, Senator Walid
Jibrin has said the lingering
feud between Governors
Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and
Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa)
was largely a fallout of
dispute over the ownership
of oil wells by the two Niger
Delta states.
Jibrin, who disclosed this
yesterday at the 88th
National Executive
Committee, NEC, meeting
of the party in Abuja, noted
that he had the assurance
of both governors that the
feud would soon be laid to
rest.
He said: “About two
weeks ago, I called the
Rivers State governor and
I talked to him about what
is happening between him
and Governor Dickson of
Bayelsa State. I was so
happy with the way the
governor of Rivers State
responded. He asked me,
chairman, are you an oil
merchant? I said no, I will
never be. He then said, do
you have an oil well? The
matter is about oil well and
the case is before the court.
But he politely talked to me
that he would contact me
later.
“The governor of Bayelsa
sorry, very sorry for Buhari.
First, his own wife, Aisha
Buhari, exposed one of his
spokesmen, Garba Shehu,
as one economic with the
truth, and agent of the
cabal, whose loyalty to her
husband is directed by
what he would gain.
“And now, the other
spokesman, Femi Adesina,
has shown himself to be not
just economic with the
truth, but an unintelligent
one at that.
“During the said
interview, Femi Adesina
State also responded by
saying he’s going to contact
me later. I am waiting for
him to contact me.”
Senator Jibrin also
expressed dissatisfaction
with the gale of defections
hitting the PDP in recent
times, saying, “There is an
uncertainty in my mind
and I don’t know whether
you people will share it. It
is the decamping
(defection) of our members
who worked with the then
to say that ‘Nigerians
should be thankful that
“Continuing, Adesina
said: “It is not as bad as
you make it
seem..because we know
what the situation was as
of 2015 and we know
what it is today despite
the reversals in security,
it is still not as bad as it
used to be in this country.
The BoT boss chided an
unnamed chieftain of the
PDP whom he alleged,
recently mooted the idea of
changing the party’s name
ahead of future elections.
Information made the
stating, “This was
achieved in air strikes
conducted by the Air Task
Force, ATF, of Operation
Lafiya Dole on January 24
and 25, 2020, on the heels
of credible intelligence
reports.
“The attack on Gashigar
was executed on January
25, 2020 after Intelligence,
Surveillance and
Reconnaissance, ISR,
missions indicated that the
location, with its defensive
parapets
and
underground tunnels,
was being used by the
ISWAP elements as a
staging area, where some
Yes, there was a bomb or
two today (Sunday). There
was a time that there were
five, six, 10 bombings in a
day in this country.”
“It is said that no matter
how far falsehood has
traveled, it must
eventually be overtaken
by truth. And the truth is
that there was never a day
throughout the five year
administration of former
President Jonathan when
and where there were ‘five,
six, 10 bombings in a day
in this country.
On his part, newly
appointed chairman of the
PDP Governors Forum and
governor of Sokoto State,
Aminu Tambuwal pledged
to unite all aggrieved
members of the party and
reposition it ahead of future
polls.
He also promised the
readiness of the governors
to embark on membership
drive to strengthen the
party across every states of
the federation.
of their leaders and
fighters meet to plan and
launch attacks.
“Accordingly, the ATF
detailed its fighter aircraft
to attack the identified
location, destroying the
structures, killing several
terrorists in the process.
“Similarly, fighter jets
were dispatched to attack
Tumbun Rego and Bula
Bello on January 24, 2020,
after ISR aircraft detected
significant activities in the
two settlements.
“The attack aircraft
effectively engaged the
targeted locations equally
destroying terrorist assets
and neutralizing several
of their combatants.”
TV INTERVIEW: Jonathan's aide lashes at Femi Adesina
''I challenge Femi Adesina
to give us specific dates,
and we will produce
documents from the Global
Terrorism Index, which
shows the number of
bombings, shootings and
other acts of insecurity,
measured daily.
“According to the Global
Terrorism Index, published
annually by the Institute for
Economics and Peace
(IEP), Nigeria is now more
terrorised under Buhari
than at anytime under
former President Jonathan.''
