‘Anyone is welcome’
By DAVID HILL
New Rangiora vicar RevToby Behan
wants hisparish to be ‘‘welcoming and
inclusive’’.
While issuessuch as samesex marriage
havebeen divisive within the church,Toby
wants everyone to be welcome.
‘‘Anyone is welcome into thischurch. I
don’t think anyone is worsein
God’s eyes.Weall fallshort
andGod sees us all the same.
‘‘Churches can be quite cold
andAnglicans can be more
about formalism and the way
things aredone,but I’vebeen
pleasantly surprised by the
loveofGod in this parish.’’
It is 45yearold Toby’s first
appointment as avicar,after
coming to ministry in midlife
after acareerasaballet
dancer in his 20s,before
working for Telecom in acall
centre and then IT.
He is following in the footsteps of his
father, Rev WallyBehan, aretired
Anglican minister who served 19 years at
theLatimer Square parish. Hisbrother Jay
is alsoanAnglican minister in
Christchurch.
It was while attending worshipat
Latimer Square that Toby says he finally
answered the calltoministry.
‘‘I’ve been aChristian since
intermediate school. Over time Istarted
thinking about how Iwas contributingand
Ifelt acalling. There wasthe calling, butI
Rev Toby Behan
kindoffelt Iwasn’tgood enough and I
needed to getrid of that.’’
After training, he servedtwo years as a
curate at the Merivale/St AlbansAnglican
Parish in Christchurch before being
appointed to Rangiora in December.
Tobyhas moved to Rangiora with his
wifePrue, 17yearold daughterTwyla,
who is taking agap year after finishing
school, and 15yearold Toby,
who is in year11atMiddleton
Grange Schoolin
Christchurch.
‘‘The parish has been
incredibly welcoming. Prue
and Ihave felt really
privileged to be here. There
weregifts in the house when
we arrived and people had
comeand tidiedupthe
garden.’’
His new parishincludes
congregations at Loburn and
Fernside,aswell as Rangiora.
He seeshis role as being to
walkalongside people in their faith
journey.
‘‘I’m not here to dispense God’sgrace.
I’m not aspiritual vending machine. Ijust
wanttohelp the parish grow, as in growing
people individually in their relationship
withGod.’’
Tobysayshelooksforward to getting to
knowhis new community and enjoys being
just 15 minutes fromthe beach and the
mountains. He is alsoakeen golfer and
hopes to become more familiar with the
local courses.
