EMPLOYEE
RELATIONS
AND ITS IMPACT
ON EMPLOYEE
PERFORMANCE
“Driving a
Committed, Motivated &
Engaged Workforce”
Dear Readers,
We are once again very pleased
to present HR News Letter 4 th
edition which is basically the final
writing for year -2019 but hesitant
not to say we have really enjoyed
and remain appreciative for the
amount of valuable comments
and inputs from our distinguished
readers which aimed at improving
the quality of our offerings.
Employees are among an
organization’s most important
resources and coined as most
valuable assets and as such the
amount of work performed by
them has a direct impact on the
productivity of an organization.
So, maintaining healthy employee
relations in an organization is a
pre-requisite for any organization
in order to achieve growth and
success.
Today Employee Relations (ER)
is a much broader concept which
involves maintaining a work
environment that satisfies the
needs of individual employees and
management. Henceforth, setting
up an effective employee relation
involves creating and cultivating
a motivated and productive
workforce.
Like in any other organization,
CRDB Bank is no exception and
in the recognition of the eminent
values that can be derived from
ER programs and considering the
transformational changes going
on, the Bank has re-organized its
HR Department by revamping its
focus on Employee Relations (ER)
through creation of an independent
unit which will basically oversee all
elements of Employee Relations
within the Bank.
With the understanding that
people are generally motivated
from within, the Employee
Relations Unit will predominantly
focus on creating “an environment
where employees will be able to
utilize their fullest potentials”.
The “environment” where all
employees will:
• Be trusted, treated fairly and
with respect.
2
• Be free from workplaces
disputes or conflicts.
• Enjoy on what they do and
where they do it.
• Have fun and enjoyment to
each other.
Since the Bank’s success is directly
linked with the performance of
its employees there is a need to
maintain strong employee relations
initiatives which will benefit our
employees and enable them
put their best efforts. Motivated
employees have higher level
of work engagement, reduced
turnover and better performance
as compared to disengaged
employees.
Hence managing these
relationships becomes important
for business success, as strong and
healthy relationships can lead to
greater employee happiness and
even increased productivity.
Henceforth, the following will be
the key focus for 2020:
Driving a
High Performance Culture
Through ER Engagement Initiatives
Since the management of human resources is a shared responsibility we request
all our line managers/supervisors to support ER initiatives which if implemented
effectively will drive performance of our Bank. Some of these initiatives Include:
• Setting up of an effective
communication framework for
sharing work related information
– makes employee aware of the
work related responsibilities and
expectations.
• Recognition of staff for work well
done –employees are encouraged
to perform consistently better and
put the best of their efforts at work
if they feel recognized.
• Fair implementation of policies
and procedures– through provision
of equal opportunities and equal
treatment of employees without any
bias will promotes positive attitude
towards the Bank and work among
employees.
• Creating job satisfaction through
provision of fair compensation,
growth opportunities and work
environment– satisfied workers
are happy workers and are more
productive than other workers
who lack job satisfaction. Work
environment not only involves the
ambience created by organization
but also co-workers.
• Provision of candid feedback and
guidance by supervisors – keeps
employees on track regarding job
targets they have achieved, whether
they have achieved in time or not,
what the Bank expects from them
and how they can attain mutual
benefits.
• Encouraging freedom of expression
or opinion from staff – imparts
a sense of belongingness among
employees and strengthens the
employee-employer relationship.
Employees feel they are an asset
to the organization, their voice
and opinions are heard and
implemented.
• The relationship will be
characterized by a concern
for equity and justice- and this
will require the communication
of sufficient information about
changes and developments.
“Together we can do it and play
your part”.

WAYS TO GET
TAKEN MORE
SERIOUSLY
AT WORK
BE EARLY
When I first started at this new job, it wasn’t unusual to see people strolling in 5, 10, and even 15 minutes late. So of course, when
I saw that, I thought it was okay to finish my face or hair, even if that meant being a few minutes late.
I quickly realized that those rules didn’t necessarily apply to me because I got the side eye. I was almost offended when they
seemed surprised that I was on time, and even early. The petty part of me didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of saying I
did anything wrong, but God is still working on me.
When you show up early, as difficult as it might be, it proves that you not only wanted the job, but that you’re dedicated to it
and deserve to be there just like everyone else.
DRESS THE PART
I pretty much live in t-shirts and jeans, so I’m all for a casual work environment. This is why I was so happy to know that everyone
dressed casually at my job, and some people didn’t even iron their clothes.
While I was tempted to toe the line and rock my distressed jeans, especially on Fridays when hardly anyone was there, I realized
that there was no way I would be taken seriously if I dressed like I was going to the mall. If you work in a casual environment,
don’t be afraid of jeans, just make sure they’re appropriate and think about pairing them with a blazer and heels.
On the other hand, you don’t always have to dress casually just because you can. In fact, not doing so could help you stand out
in an even better way. Either way, go above and beyond and dress for what you want, not for where you are currently. If your
boss or the VP is rocking suits every day, you might want to think about doing the same.
GET TO KNOW YOUR CO-WORKERS
Small talk with co-workers can help build working relationships. Try asking about their kids and family life, or even how their day
is going. Getting to know the people you work with allows them get to know you, and ultimately take you more seriously. Something
about realizing that your co-workers have a life outside of the building is ike when you’re little and you see your teacher
outside of school.
If you can, invite some of them to lunch or to hang out after work. When you get back into the office, you might notice how the
demeanour and interactions completely change for the better.
STAND UP FOR YOURSELF
There were so many times when my colleagues didn’t think I knew what I was doing or what I was talking about. This was even
the case when it came to tasks that I specifically was hired to do, and it made me wonder why they brought me on board to
begin with.
If you also have moments like that at work, it’s imperative that you don’t hull over and just let it pass by. You have to prove that
you’re knowledgeable about what you’re doing, even if there are those who question why you’re there in the first place. Not
standing up for yourself indicates that they’re right about you and your alleged lack of skills.
For someone like me who is typically soft spoken, this is a tough lesson to learn. But it’s also a very necessary one. Whether it’s
your first job out of college, your first job in a new career, or one that you’ve been doing for years, there’s a reason that they
chose you. You just can’t be afraid to keep proving it and showing it (in a respectful way of course).
KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL
If you have a lot of friends at work, it’s really important to make sure that you’re still taken seriously. That’s a really tough balance
to achieve, but once you do, it’s actually a pretty great work experience. If you don’t have a lot of friends at work, you might be
taken seriously but you might not be respected. Both of these extremes can be resolved with how you conduct yourself.
It’s really all about setting boundaries and letting your colleagues know, whether they’re friends or just associates, that you take
your work seriously. There are some amazing work environments that are really fun and give you permission to let loose. Even in
those situations, you just have to remember to draw the line somewhere.
Having fun at work definitely means you love what you do, but at the end of the day, make it understood that you want to be
taken seriously.

HOW TO BURN OUT
FESTIVE FATS
1. Don’t shop hungry. Eat before you go shopping so the scent of Cinnamons or caramel corn doesn’t tempt you to gobble
treats you don’t need.
2. Start an exercise routine. Start the year with an exercise routine that is simple and fun like a 30 minutes evening brisk
walk. NB: dont stretch yourself too much to start with or else your plan will not be sustainable.
3. Distance helps the heart stay healthy. At a party, don’t stand next to the food table. That makes it harder to mindlessly
reach for food as you talk. If you know you are prone to recreational eating, pop a mint or a stick of gum so you won’t keep
reaching for the chips.
4. Avoid alcohol on an empty stomach. Alcohol increases your appetite and diminishes your ability to control what you
eat.
5. Put on your dancing (or walking) shoes. Dancing is a great way to work off some holiday calories. If you are at a family
gathering, suggest a walk before the feast or even between dinner and dessert.
6. Make room for veggies. At meals and parties, don’t ignore fruits and vegetables. They make great snacks and even
better side or main dishes — unless they’re slathered with creamy sauces or butter.
7. Drink plenty of water. We can confuse thirst with hunger, so keep well hydrated. Have water in jugs out when friends
come over. Have a water bottle when out and about with the last minute errands and start with water when out socialising.
8. Keep an eye on serving sizes. Look at the size of your plates, bowls and glasses. We tend to fill no matter what the size.
Keep these smaller so you don’t simply fill them with eyes bigger than your stomach.
9. Avoid the sausage. Sausages and other processed meats contain saturated fats, salt and preservatives, and high intake is
linked with elevated risk of bowel cancers. At BBQs, switch sausages for hamburgers made using lean mince, or lean meat
skewers.
10. Dessert is OK, but be smart. If you fancy dessert, offer to share with someone, or look for fruit-based options. Added
sugars in foods are a source of “empty kilojoules”; they give our bodies energy but very little in the way of nutrients for
health. Frequent sugar consumption can also lead to tooth decay

A Story of Success
“I am Willy Kamwela from Marketing CRDB Bank Plc,
May I invite you to hear my Story:
Being a Certified Public Banker (CPB) is a naming
that reminds me on the secret of attaining any noble
achievement and success, the secret is readiness,
determination and relentlessness. If you are not
ready, you cannot achieve, if you are not determined,
you cannot do the “professional mining”.
In view of the above, my success in being crowned
with CPB Mark is tied to the above three pegs i,e.
• Readiness
• Determination
• Relentlessness
TIOB -CPB -Course outlines cover very well tailormade
subjects which are meant to professionalize
the incumbent to enable him/her suit and fit in the
modern multidimensional banking environment. With
CPB, the holder is shaped and sharpened in terms
of banking knowledge, skills, professionalism and
ethical integrity. The subjects embedded in the TIOB-
CPB programme cut across the banking industry in
Tanzania and beyond as the TIOB under the patronage
of BOT and CEOs/MDs of major commercial Banks in
the country is in professional partnership with same
bodies in Other African countries.
Subjects covered includes:
1. Strategic marketing management
2. Monetary System
3. Financial services
4. Financial Analysis
5. Lending
6. Management practice
7. International Trade Finance
8. Law Relating to Banking
As I recall my CPB search Journal, I Owe a lot to my
Department boss, Madam Tully EstherMwambapa
(DMRCS, but now DCA) and my Immediate super
Godwin Semunyu (MPR) who gave me supportive
environment that enabled me to pursue the CPB
programme. I also take special pride, in the company
of my Department colleagues, who used to challenge
me in positive way, the case that stirred my readiness,
determination and relentlessness, and finally i ended
up being crowned with the CPB Mark.
Lastly but not least, my success story cannot be
complete without being tied up to the Bank’s HR
Team, regular follow ups and push for professional
attainment is highly applause.
My promise to the Bank management is that, I will
unleash all of my CPB potency to contribute to the
operational efficiency and profitability of the Our Bank.
I will also endeavor to uphold our Brand integrity and
its embedded supremacy.
My fellow CRDBians May I encourage you to upgrade
yourself via TIOB Programs; A platform for Professional
molding and Professional sharpening.

SALES COACH
TRAINING
Have you ever thought on how 70% of employees will be part of the sales force in a very near future? We got a way. More
than 400 sales coaches across the business operation will be participating in an exciting sales coach training program
which will enable them to improve their sales capability, but also, to coach others in raising their sales capability.
With excitement, this new program was officially launched on 29th November 2019 by the MCM members having Sales
Transformation Strategy discussion with the facilitators and was followed by a Strategic session with Zonal Managers,
Heads & senior managers from the head office.
To date, more than 150 employees, including Relationship and Branch Managers, have so far been trained. More sessions
planned to take place in the regions before the end of this year and sales coaching sessions will follow, including more
employees.
“Hi Ami, I am
not Sales Soldier
neither do I do
sales actitivity
as I am from
human resources
department.”
“Suprising! You
do not know that
all staff have the
responsibility
of selling banks
Products and
Services starting
from their
family members,
relatives and all
close friends. You
need to become
a sales soldier for
the bank”
“Ok! I did not
know that.
Come to think
of that you are
now reminding
me about my
friends who are
businessmen but
I do not even
know where they
bank. What else
did you learn
from Enzo?”
“We learnt about the Foundation
Values of Sales.
Seek Peace of Mind before you
Seek Business.
When we Sell Smart, we must
face our shame & when we sell
hard, we must face our pain and
we will grow stronger & Smarter
Become a Specialist: Prepare
yourself till you believe that
you are the best thing thet ever
happened to your customer.”
“Ok! Now I know why one of the sales person
was saying that we need to face massive
customer with massive preparation. He also
said that customers with Big Mouth are
the ones that will give us most referals and
impact bank’s reputation the most.
Thanks Ami, please be my Sales Coach and
transform me to become sales soldier for the
bank.
Together lets go out there and sell Banks
Products and services and ensure we
increase our bank’s market share within the
region.”
LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!
Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young
engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what
starting salary are you looking for?”
The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the
benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to
a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental,
company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased
every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says,
“Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.”
My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes
you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.
A boy asks his father, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “That’s disgusting. Don’t
talk about things like that over dinner,” the dad replies. After dinner the father
asks, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy says.
“There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.”

WITH DBO TEAM
The Human Resources team continues to strengthen CRDB culture Bank wide by increasing workforce engagement,
improving communication, and developing relationships.
On 14th October 2019 a total of 115 staff from DBO participated in a team building session which took place at Ledger
Plaza in Dar es Salaam. The program was coordinated and facilitated by Human Resources Department and a coordinating
team from DBO.
The activity aimed at strengthening team work and also creating an opportunity among all the department members to
realize the potential of each of them. The activity was done in one full day with indoor and outdoor activities; everybody
was excited by the lessons behind all activities and the whole time table which were very engaging, full of games, sports

What are SMART Goals?
• Statements of the important results you are working to accomplish
• Designed in a way to foster clear and mutual understanding of what constitutes
expected levels of performance and successful professional development
Where to start?
• Start by thinking about your whole job and the broad areas (or “buckets”) of
responsibility and results for which you are accountable.
• Develop a goal statement for each bucket. To get the scope right, remember to
focus on end results not tasks.
• Goals should be high level enough to encompass the core outcomes for which
you are responsible, but specific and clear enough so you will be able to measure
success.
• Goals should be on-going job responsibilities and any new projects, assignments,
priorities, or initiatives that are specific to this performance cycle.
• Having too many goals can be an indicator that your goals are scoped at too
low a level and are focused more on tasks than on end results.
• If it seems that your goals are becoming too numerous and task-oriented, it may
be helpful to consider combining several goal statements into a broader outcome
area.
SMART OBJECTIVE SETTING
S
Specific
M
Measurable
A
Attainable
R
Realistic
T
Time- Bound
What will be accomplished, outline in a clear statement precisely what is
required to be done.
What data will measure the goal? (How much?). Include a measure to
enable you to monitor progress and to know when the objective has been
achieved.
Is the goal doable? Do you have the necessary skills and resources?
Is it agreed upon, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented, significant,
stretching? Objectives can be designed to be challenging, but it is
important that failure is not built into objectives.
How does the goal align with broader goals? Why is the result important? Is
your goal relevant and within your reach? Your goal must be consistent with
other goals established and fits with organisation strategy.
What is the time frame for accomplishing the goal? Agree the date by which
the outcome must be achieved

COMMEMMORATION OF THE
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
The World mental health day 2019 was celebrated on
10th October 2019 and CRDB Bank joined the World in
commemorating this day. The theme for this year was
“Focusing on suicide prevention”. Suicide being a global
phenomenon it occurs throughout the lifespan and therefore
there was every reason for us to join the World in understanding
how we might also be affected.
We selected a topic that is closely related to suicide and
this was DEPRESSION as a main disorder. Many people who
suffer from it have a great likelihood of committing suicide.
Statistics show that close to 800 000 people die due to
suicide every year, this is one person every 40 seconds.
Due to the fact that Mental health concerns everyone, we
thought it would be worthwhile to raise awareness via Video
conference as well as staff engagement activities as can be
seen in the pictures below.
