Oversteer: Letter from the Editor

by Kurt Scaggs, Managing Editor

Disclaimer: I get really geeky this month about some

questionable cars from the past. If the names aren’t familiar,

google them. Seriously, it’s worth it.

In the Tech Session article on page 12, I write about an

old 911 modified by Rinspeed that was sitting out back

watching the world go by. It reminded me of being a kid and

all of the crazy, over-the-top cars that were being made from

911’s in the 80’s and 90’s. The made for Miami Vice cars

from Strosek, Gemballa (I loved the Gemballa Avalanche),

Koenig and more serious cars from DP and RUF were the

things of dreams in those days. It wasn’t just 911’s that were

defiled, many a BMW and Mercedes recieved gull-wing

doors, extra gills and monochromatic paint jobs or ultrawide

fenders. Funny that back then a white interior with

red piping was the way to go, and today black on black

with black everything seems to be the statement. Anyway,

times have changed and we’ve matured. Even RWB looks

restrained when you look at what was being done back

then. But the urge has never really completely passed with

us has it? Take a walk around any of our events and you’ll

see cars customized to the owners’ individual and yes,

sometimes unique tastes. That’s what I love about Porsches.

Most of them aren’t so dear that you expect a letter from the

factory if you change something. And it’s just fun to tinker

and make them yours. In a responsible ‘can be returned to

stock’ kind of way of course.

These days in the world of air-cooled cars, we talk about

Singer and Gunthewerks among others but the story is the

same, a great platform being refined to meet the specific

desires and goals of its owner, whatever that may be.

Speaking of goals, this month is the quarterly can food

drive edition of Mavs&Mochas. Jimmy G, our Charity

Chair, hosts a canned food drive 4 times a year at Mavs &

Mochas to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. Mavericks

have always been generous to this charity and last year

donated over 1000 lbs. of food. Let’s beat that in 2020.

This is a chance to pay it forward and advance NTFB’s

10-year plan to provide access to 92 million nutritious

meals annually by 2025. By donating items like: canned

tuna and chicken, peanut butter, boxed meals, canned

fruit and veggies, canned soup, and rice and beans, we

can help North Texas families feel more secure about their

next meal.

So pick up some canned food and meet us at RAC.

Don’t forget to...Enjoy the Drive.
