Burbank Public Library February 2020
Vol. 24, No.2
News & Events
A Note from the Director
Last month, we opened the new Spark! Digital Media Lab, a technology learning space at the Burbank
Central Library that will help us fulfill our promise of providing the modern services needed by this
community to achieve their goals, whether personal, educational or professional. As exciting as the lab is,
however, it highlights the other ways in which the Central Library is failing to meet this promise due to its
deteriorated state and out-of-date amenities.
Elizabeth Goldman
Library Services Director
In February, we will be gathering public input on priorities for a replacement Central Library. It’s time to
develop a vision for what this facility could be, demonstrating the value a modern library facility would
offer to the community. This will help City Council make practical decisions in eventually determining
how to move the project forward with a funding commitment.
For this vision to be complete, we need your assistance helping us identify the best roles for public libraries in Burbank’s future.
Would you devote more space to study areas, children’s services, books or technology? How could a modern building help you
achieve your or your family’s goals? What needs are there in the community that a new library could help meet, from learning to
sustainability?
We invite you to help create this vision. There are three ways to share your thoughts:
• Attend a community meeting on Thursday, February 6, at either 3:30 pm or 7 pm at the Central Library
• Contribute to our interactive display in the Central Library lobby during the month of February
• Voice your opinion via an online survey at burbanklibrary.org during the month of February
Your public input will help our team of architects and City staff identify possibilities and opportunities for a replacement Central
Library. The right building will support educational and employment success through its lifespan, help maintain a thriving local
economy, provide access to technology and training, and strengthen the Burbank community.
In The Big Goodbye,
New York Times
bestselling author
Sam Wasson turns
his gaze on the
making of Chinatown.
Notorious for its twist
ending and iconic closing line of
dialogue, it is one of the great
American movies of all time and one
of the last great films produced in the
era of “old Hollywood.”
First assistant director on the film,
Howard “Hawk” Koch, Jr., will join
with Wasson to discuss why
Chinatown endures as a work of art…
and as a state of mind.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Join us for a screening of Chinatown at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, February 11, 2020
