Spar and OFM Carols by Candlelight Bloemfontein is taking place at the Kovsie Cricket Oval in 

Bloemfontein, featuring Kurt Darren, Leah, Monique Steyn and the Soweto Gospel Choir. Be part of the most

A trio of brilliant books for the holidays 

Oh my. Joy of joys! A new book 

from Jojo Moyes, just in time for the 

holidays. Inspired by a remarkable

The Giver of Stars is the story of 

Alice Wright, a woman who leaves 

England for America, only to discover 

that swapping the twitching curtains

actually, the answer to her prayers. 

Then she meets Margery O’Hara, a 

woman who isn’t afraid of anything

pounced on any new Alexandra Fuller with delight (unlike her mother, who 

thinks they’re ‘dreadful’). Just released is Travel Light, Move Fast, a tribute to 

Alexandra’s father, who died unexpectedly – and not with the drama the family 

expected – in Budapest, ‘the poor man’s Paris’. Read in equal parts of envy and

Dipalesa Mbola is not just a pretty face but a force to be reckoned with while paving her way 

to greatness, one pageant at a time. 

Dipalesa Mbola can be seen as an 

experienced veteran in the pageant 

industry. Exposed to the pageantry 

world at a young age by her mother, 

who had a love for it, Dipalesa knew 

that pageantry would a part of her 

future. 

She talks to Get It about her life’s 

journey. “My first pageant was at our 

local church where my Sunday school 

teacher organised the event to raise 

funds for the church. I don’t remember 

it very clearly, as I was very young,” she 

says. Dipalesa and her mom shared 

a very special bond as well as a love 

for pageants. “As a young girl my 

mother and I would sit and watch 

the Miss South Africa pageants. We 

never missed one.” Her mother was the 

person who encouraged her to put 

herself out there as she was a very shy 

child and by taking part in pageants 

she learned how to be confident in 

herself. Dipalesa took part in many 

small pageants in her community, 

therefore the more she participated, 

the more she realised that she is 

capable of winning and she started 

loving it. 

The young beauty admits that her 

community has had a great influence 

in building her confidence. The first 

big pageant she entered was Miss 

Mamelodi Sundowns, in which she 

came out tops. Going on to the 

Nationals, she was placed in the top 

five. “I realised I should enter as many 

pageants as I could to gain as much 

knowledge and experience as possible 

before I could take the leap of faith and 

go for Miss SA when the time came.” 

Raised by a single mother, Dipalesa has 

great respect and appreciation for her 

as well as other women. She believes 

in women helping women, in women 

being able to do it all and in women 

attaining greatness. “My mother passed 

away in 2013, but something in that 

year after my mother’s death just 

clicked when I was sitting at home 

watching television. I saw the advert 

on entering Miss SA, while at the same 

time, in the corner of my eye, there 

was a picture of my mother. I decided 

entering Miss SA would be a way of 

paying homage to her.” 

Dipalesa was 21 years old when she 

entered Miss South Africa in 2013. The 

Miss South Africa pageant took place in 

2014. “When I entered, I honestly didn’t 

think that I would get in, but I placed in 

the top 12, which is still crazy to think 

about as I entered with the goal to only 

gain experience. The experience was 

eye opening and it taught me so much. 

We would have so many speakers and 

workshops daily for guidance and to 

prepare us for what was to come after 

Miss SA was over.” 

During her time at Miss South Africa 

her schedule was jam packed every 

second of the day, with countless 

events to attend, social and corporate. 

She had to be ready to go any time 

of the day, with full make-up. “Miss 

SA is a one-stop-shop for everything 

one needs to know how to create a 

sustainable lifestyle and to be the best 

version of yourself you can be. It was 

the best experience I have ever had.” 

Dipalesa has come a long way from 

the little farm girl in her first pageant 

at the local church to a boss lady with 

the best of experiences and so much 

knowledge to keep her driven. After 

Miss SA, she immediately went on 

holiday to Cape Town to refresh and 

regroup. When she made her way 

back to Bloemfontein, she knew that 

she would want to share and instil her 

practical knowledge with other young 

women. 

Dipalesa met her current business 

partner, Pitchov Kumwimba-Ngombe. 

They came up with the idea of a beauty 

pageant called Miss Glamorous Free 

State. To Dipalesa working as a mentor 

for younger girls has been interesting 

and takes a lot as she almost feels 

responsible for the girls. She describes 

the Miss Glamorous pageant as a 

platform where young girls get the 

opportunity to grow, to learn and to 

better themselves for the future. “Now 

that I get to work behind the scenes, 

I realise what it takes to organise an 

event like this,” she shares. 

Miss Glamorous FS has been going 

strong for six years now and the 

pageant has been fortunate to have 

the support of loyal sponsors. “It is a 

great feeling to see your own business 

become a success story and one that 

has really paved the way for our girls, 

especially in education where our girls 

go on to get scholarships to further 

their studying.” 

Dipalesa is proud of having taken her 

experiences and turning them into 

a growing success, creating lasting 

memories for the young ladies to 

whom she has been a mentor.

met ‘n groot 

liefde vir kos, wat 

sy voluit uitleef in 

haar kookkuns. Sy 

vertel aan Get It hoedat sy in 2009 haar 

eie koffiewinkel oopgemaak het in 

Kimberley met die naam Wilhelmina’s. 

“In 2012 begin ek my man, wat in die 

korporatiewe omgewing gewerk het, 

help. Wat ‘n verskriklik vervelige tyd 

was dit nie, ek kon nie my kreatiwiteit 

uitleef nie.” 

Wilhelmina hou daarvan om die 

tradisionele kenmerke van Suid- 

Afrikaanse kosse in haar spyskaart te 

behou, veral as dit by nagereg kom. 

Dié Kokkedoor het as kind baie tyd in 

die kombuis deurgebring en onthou 

met heimwee hoedat hulle “van die 

veld af gelewe het”. 

Na skool het sy ingeskryf vir ‘n paar 

ontwerpkursusse, maar voordat sy 

‘n loopbaan daarvan kon maak, het 

haar ma haar aangemoedig om vir 

‘n kookkompetisie in te skryf wat 

deur Sarie-tydskrif aangebied is. “Ek 

het deelgeneem, maar nie die kursus 

voltooi nie. Gelukkig kon ek mettertyd 

myself leer.” 

Wilhelmina kry haar inspirasie van 

internasionale kookprogramme op 

televisie en Netflix. “Ek en my sussies 


het altyd die kookkompetisies saam 

gekyk en kommentaar gelewer. Ons 

het ook lekker saam gehuil wanneer 

ons gunsteling uitval,” vertel sy 

glimlaggend. Op die vraag wat vir haar 

belangrik is in ‘n kompetisie, antwoord 

sy, “Almal het op die ou einde hul 

eie kookstyl en hul eie manier van 

inspirasie vind. Jy kan dus nie dieselfde 

as ‘n ander kok wees nie. Wat belangrik 

is, is dat jy jou egtheid behou in 

alles wat jy doen. Jy kan altyd dinge 

aanleer, maar jy moet nooit ophou 

eksperimenteer nie. Wees wie jy is.” 

Wilhelmina vertel hoedat sy dit 

altyd oorweeg het om eendag vir 

Kokkedoor in te skryf. “Ek wou dit nog 

altyd doen, en toe ek uiteindelik inkom 

en ons almal by die meet and greet 

kom, besef ek, O, Griet”, al die mense is 

só professioneel.” Sy het gedink sy het 

‘n goeie idee van wat agter die skerms 

aangaan, maar min het sy besef wat 

alles gebeur toe sy op die eerste dag 

van skiet daar instap. “My grootste 

worry was dat ek nie sou kon doen wat 

van my verwag word nie, want ek is 

‘n prentjiemens en my kop kan nogal 

met my weghardloop.” Die kookspanne 

op Kokkedoor bestaan uit twee kokke, 

wat dit baie makliker maak vir die 

deelnemers. Sy vertel hoe lekker dit 

was om saam met almal te kon werk 

en hul stories te kon deel tydens die 

skiet van die program. Die deelnemers 

kon deurentyd ook gesellig saamkuier

Minnette found inspiration for designing for SweatGear from 

working collectively as a team, brainstorming and analysing 

trends to try and be ahead of the pack when designing new 

active wear. She was first introduced to the brand at a pop-up 

trade show where they were exhibitors. She was drawn to the 

quality of the fabric used on the tights and started wearing 

them regularly. In addition to the quality of fabric, she was also 

impressed by the way the tights fitted and how they were squat 

proof. Together with SweatGear, they decided on a collaboration 

that would be beneficial for both of them. 

Active wear has become a lifestyle and is worn outside 

training grounds. It has become just as important as the 

usual everyday wardrobe and SweatGear has catered for that 

phenomenon. Most of its clients can be spotted wearing their 

stylish and comfortable tights outside the gym whilst running 

errands. Minnette believes fashionable active wear is a way to 

express your personality and a way to have fun while working

The festive season is finally upon us and we are ready to indulge 

Fruit cake ice-cream 

You will need 

2 cups good quality vanilla ice-cream 

50 g fruit cake 

in all things sweet and savoury without feeling guilty because 

holiday calories don’t count. 

Let the ice-cream soften for 10 

min. Break the fruitcake into the 

ice-cream and mix it until well 

blended. Let it freeze for about 

2-3 hours before serving. To 

make a chocolate sauce, 

heat 100 g dark 

chocolate and 

100 ml cream. 

Pour over the 

ice-cream and 

sprinkle with 

pecan nuts.

2019 winner of Kokkedoor, an Afrikaans cooking reality show on 

KykNET. The foodie has shared 4 festive recipes that are easy, fun 

and different from the usual recipes. The unique recipes cater to 

every family member’s taste buds. 

Crème de papaya 

You will need 

1 cup ripe sweet papaya 

½ cup vanilla ice cream 

Blend the papaya with an immersion 

blender until it’s runny and smooth. 

Add the ice-cream and blend until 

it has the consistency of a thick 

milkshake. Spoon it into a glass and 

top with fresh fruit. 

Berry trifle 

You will need 

Vanilla cake 

Raspberry jam 

Custard 

Fresh berries 

Mini marshmallows 

White rum (Bacardi) 

Cut pieces of cake and dunk it in the 

rum. Layer the cake, berries, custard, 

jam and marshmallows. 


Crème brûlée 

You will need 

3 egg yolks 

100 g brown sugar 

250 ml cream 

Vanilla essence 

Preheat the oven to 180°C 

Heat cream in a saucepan, but don’t boil. Cream egg yolks and sugar until pale. 

Whisk into the egg mix, a little of the cream. Add the rest of the cream and 

stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the mixture to an oven pan. Bake the 

mixture for 10 min at 180°C. Turn up the heat to 200°C and bake the custard for 

another 5-8 min or until it starts to caramelize on top. It should be curdled. 

Spoon the mixture into a food processor and blend until very smooth. Pour it 

into ramekin moulds or wine glasses and let it set for a couple of hours. Serve it 

with sugar brittle or sprinkle sugar on top and melt it with a blowtorch.

of colour 

Keep your garden and indoor plants fresh this festive season

Holiday programme: 

1 - 20 December. 

A fiesta of colour for the festive season includes hot pink, fiery 

fuchsia, sizzling orange and knockout yellows, making summer 

more colourful and vibrant. The festive season tends to be busy 

and keeping your garden fresh may be the last thing on your 

mind. However, your garden and plants don’t have to take a back 

seat with these easy tips. 

If you have indoor plants like Impatiens ‘Clockwork’ (a potimpatiens 

with a wide colour range, including the two-tone Pink 

Star and Orange Stripe) invest in a good quality potting mix and 

controlled-release fertiliser. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. 

Water the pots once a day and spray with a liquid fertiliser once a 

month. 

Water your plants in the early morning or late in the afternoon to 

minimise evaporation. Lightly mulch beds to keep roots cool and 

moist for longer. Mulch is any material that is spread or laid over 

the surface of the soil as a covering. It is used to retain moisture 

in the soil, suppress weeds, keep the soil cool, and make the 

garden bed look more attractive. 

The festive season tends to have hot, dry weather which can 

affect the grass. Minimise mowing the lawn in the morning or 

afternoons and rather opt to mow in the evenings when the sun 

is down. This helps keep the moisture in the roots. 

Trim off dead flowers to encourage new flowers. In addition, 

fertilise annuals and perennials with an organic granular fertiliser 

in mid-December. 

If you’re going on holiday, spread a 1-2cm layer of mulch over 

the soil to conserve moisture while you are away. Before leaving, 

don’t fertilise anything as your plants will need water regularly 

and it will lead to new growth while you’re away. 

Pinch off all buds and new growth on the roses. This also saves 

water. Spray the roses with Ludwig’s Insect Spray and Chronos (a 

fungicide) to repel pests and to prevent black spot while you are 

away. 

If you’ve gone on holiday for a long period, your grass would 

likely have grown a few inches. Don’t mow the lawn in a single 

mowing but rather mow it gradually. Mowing it too short will 

result in weakening or even killing it.

with young kids 

Travelling with kids, especially 

toddlers during the holiday season,

next trip. According to an article

a balanced itinerary where you 

can pace yourself and eliminate

is about the journey and not 

just the destination. It gives the

Be sure to bring along something 

comforting from home to help

a favourite stuffed animal, small 

blanket, favourite storybook, or their 

go-to items at home. Carrying their

ride might help them get on to that 

plane without worrying about where 

it’s going to take them or how they’re 

going to get there. If your child has an

When you’re travelling with babies, 

always make sure you have an extra 

outfit packed and accessible, not 

just for your baby, but for yourself. 

From diaper leaks to spit-ups 

after a feeding, there are plenty of 

opportunities for a baby to ruin your 

shirt or pants. It’s great if you can 

get your child into a clean diaper 

and new outfit. But the rest of that 

journey will be unpleasant for you if 

you have a soaked pair of pants or a 

dirty shirt. 

When you’re travelling by plane 

and your kids are young, you don’t 

want to panic about rushing to the 

boarding gate in a short period of 

time. Leaving plenty of time for your 

layovers means you can take care

and still have enough time to walk 

casually to the gate. If travelling by 

car, a stopover along the way will also 

mean a lot less stress by the time you 

get to your destination. 

Ensure the car is prepped and ready 

for the road as well as the baby car 

seat being roadworthy. Check the 

tyre pressure and change the oil if 

needed. Strap your baby into his/her 

car seat (always placed in the back 

seat) correctly to ensure a safe and 

comfy ride. You might want to get 

window shades to protect your baby 

from the sun. Always ensure your kid 

is securely wearing a seat belt and is 

buckled up. 

When travelling by plane with a child 

with special needs, explain to your 

travel agent or ticket agent that you 

have to be seated upfront and near 

the bathroom. When waiting for 

the flight to board, tell the agent(s) 

at the gate that you need to be 

seated first because of your child’s 

disability. Once seated, inform all 

flight attendants on the plane about 

your child. The more they know, the 

better they are to help, if needed.

This prevents tantrums and another 

way to prevent it is to get sensory

If your child experiences carsickness, 

try to distract them with songs and

sickness, although research has not 

demonstrated a clear benefit. Try to 

avoid food with strong odours as this 

may aggravate the nausea. Ask your

their back with closed eyes for a few 

minutes.

How to pack your 

Packing is mostly perceived as a tedious task, even for seasoned 

travellers. In some cases, it may be the reason why people tend to 

over pack or sometimes even forget the basic essentials. 

If you’re going on an international trip or taking 

a short left, always make sure you’re 

perfectly prepped for your 

vacation.

When packing for a trip, gather all the items and garments you’re thinking 

of packing and anticipate needing, then put half of them back. Pack 

mostly neutral-coloured tops and bottoms so that each item will be 

interchangeable and match the others. When ‘decluttering’ your items for a 

trip, pack clothes that fit you well, outfits that go together and nothing that 

you ‘might wear’. In most cases, after a trip you tend to realise that you over 

packed and barely wore some of the clothes while on vacation. To prevent 

this from happening, go for a minimalistic approach. Ensure you pack 

the number of outfits that you need and don’t throw in ‘extra items’ just 

because there is still enough luggage space. Save the space for gifts and 

items you’ll buy on holiday. 

Cover folded clothes with a dry-cleaning bag as a dry-cleaning bag has a 

slippery surface that prevents folded clothes from creasing in a suitcase. 

Place a dry-cleaning bag in between each layer of clothing. To get a certain 

layer easily, simply pull the ends of the bag up on either side. To save 

luggage space, roll up underwear, socks and scarves in small balls and pack 

them in between the sides of the suitcase. This will leave extra space for 

larger clothing items.

padding to protect them. Wrap the fragile items in thick, sturdy clothing 

and place them in between the clothes in the suitcase. Pack your toiletries 

in containers to prevent them from leaking and to save luggage space. A

opt for test tubes. They’re tiny, compact, and clear, making them perfect 

for travel. Clear plastic containers are also useful when travelling. Transfer 

enough lotion, sunscreen, and face cream in each plastic container. 

Estimate how much you’ll need and opt for that instead of travelling with 

big product containers. 

Always pack a small emergency medical kit in your toiletry bag or small bag 

that is stocked with elastoplast, pain relievers, cold medicine, medicine for 

stomach trouble, itch relief ointment, antibiotics (you can ask your doctor 

for an emergency prescription before you travel), and ear plugs (life savers 

on long-haul flights and trains).
