A PLACE TO
REMEMBER
AN HONOURABLE BROTHER
When we were young, my brother and I were always different. I didn’t think
things through the same way he did. I’d just put my head down and never
look back. He was always more cautious. Less headstrong; and he was the
better person for it.
I’m grateful that time can change a man. Because when I visit him where
his ashes reside, looking back is what I love doing most.
Book club
A trio of brilliant books for the holidays
Oh my. Joy of joys! A new book
from Jojo Moyes, just in time for the
holidays. Inspired by a remarkable
true story, the book is described
as ‘the unforgettable journey of
five extraordinary women living in
extraordinary and perilous times’.
The Giver of Stars is the story of
Alice Wright, a woman who leaves
England for America, only to discover
that swapping the twitching curtains
of suburbia for being the wife of an
American businessman and living in
the wild mountains of Kentucky isn’t,
actually, the answer to her prayers.
Then she meets Margery O’Hara, a
woman who isn’t afraid of anything
or anyone. And a woman
on a mission! The pair, along with
three others, join up and, ignoring
obvious dangers and loads of social
disapproval, travel hundreds of miles
a week to deliver books to isolated
families. When a body is found in the
mountains, and one of the group
becomes a suspect, their newly
formed friendship is put to the test.
The Giver of Stars is unputdownable.
Penguin, R270
Ever since reading the marvellous Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight, we’ve
pounced on any new Alexandra Fuller with delight (unlike her mother, who
thinks they’re ‘dreadful’). Just released is Travel Light, Move Fast, a tribute to
Alexandra’s father, who died unexpectedly – and not with the drama the family
expected – in Budapest, ‘the poor man’s Paris’. Read in equal parts of envy and
horror – her parents launched from one calamity to the next, fuelled with gin
and in a haze of cigarette smoke, along with the children, a handful of dogs and
a collection of orange Le Creuset pots – the memoir jumps from present to past.
Alexandra tells of the lessons her father taught her. Lessons about life, love, loss
and tragedy. Lessons that led her to cope with the loss of her father, of the fallout
with her sister, and of the unbearable final bereavement she reveals in the final
chapter, when you may find yourself, as we did, holding the book further away
than normal, so as to distance yourself from the grief she pours into the pages.
Brilliantly written, heartbreaking, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Not much more
you need from a great read, really. Profile Books, R300 • If there was ever anyone
as glam as the marvellous Jackie Kennedy Onassis, it was her sister, Lee. One the
most iconic women of her time – and the favourite of their rakish father, John
‘Black Jack’ Vernou Bouvier – she lived in the shadow of her older sister, their
mother’s favourite. Both had a keen eye for beauty – in fashion, design, painting,
music, dance, sculpture, poetry – and both were talented artists. Both loved
prerevolutionary Russian culture. Both adored the blinding sunlight, calm seas and
ancient olive groves of Greece. But the two, although extremely close, were hugely
competitive and their relationship included much rivalry and jealousy. When
Jackie died and her will read, Lee discovered that cash bequests were left to family,
friends and staff, but nothing to her. ‘I have made no provision in this my Will for
my sister, Lee B. Radziwill, for whom I have great affection, because I have already
done so during my lifetime,’ it read. The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters by Sam Kashner
and Nancy Schoenberger, who had many candid interviews with Lee, explores the
tragic and glamorous lives of these two fascinating women. HarperCollins, R310.
Fiercely
Female
Dipalesa Mbola is not just a pretty face but a force to be reckoned with while paving her way
to greatness, one pageant at a time.
Dipalesa Mbola can be seen as an
experienced veteran in the pageant
industry. Exposed to the pageantry
world at a young age by her mother,
who had a love for it, Dipalesa knew
that pageantry would a part of her
future.
She talks to Get It about her life’s
journey. “My first pageant was at our
local church where my Sunday school
teacher organised the event to raise
funds for the church. I don’t remember
it very clearly, as I was very young,” she
says. Dipalesa and her mom shared
a very special bond as well as a love
for pageants. “As a young girl my
mother and I would sit and watch
the Miss South Africa pageants. We
never missed one.” Her mother was the
person who encouraged her to put
herself out there as she was a very shy
child and by taking part in pageants
she learned how to be confident in
herself. Dipalesa took part in many
small pageants in her community,
therefore the more she participated,
the more she realised that she is
capable of winning and she started
loving it.
The young beauty admits that her
community has had a great influence
in building her confidence. The first
big pageant she entered was Miss
Mamelodi Sundowns, in which she
came out tops. Going on to the
Nationals, she was placed in the top
five. “I realised I should enter as many
pageants as I could to gain as much
knowledge and experience as possible
before I could take the leap of faith and
go for Miss SA when the time came.”
Raised by a single mother, Dipalesa has
great respect and appreciation for her
as well as other women. She believes
in women helping women, in women
being able to do it all and in women
attaining greatness. “My mother passed
away in 2013, but something in that
year after my mother’s death just
clicked when I was sitting at home
watching television. I saw the advert
on entering Miss SA, while at the same
time, in the corner of my eye, there
was a picture of my mother. I decided
entering Miss SA would be a way of
paying homage to her.”
Dipalesa was 21 years old when she
entered Miss South Africa in 2013. The
Miss South Africa pageant took place in
2014. “When I entered, I honestly didn’t
think that I would get in, but I placed in
the top 12, which is still crazy to think
about as I entered with the goal to only
gain experience. The experience was
eye opening and it taught me so much.
We would have so many speakers and
workshops daily for guidance and to
prepare us for what was to come after
Miss SA was over.”
During her time at Miss South Africa
her schedule was jam packed every
second of the day, with countless
events to attend, social and corporate.
She had to be ready to go any time
of the day, with full make-up. “Miss
SA is a one-stop-shop for everything
one needs to know how to create a
sustainable lifestyle and to be the best
version of yourself you can be. It was
the best experience I have ever had.”
Dipalesa has come a long way from
the little farm girl in her first pageant
at the local church to a boss lady with
the best of experiences and so much
knowledge to keep her driven. After
Miss SA, she immediately went on
holiday to Cape Town to refresh and
regroup. When she made her way
back to Bloemfontein, she knew that
she would want to share and instil her
practical knowledge with other young
women.
Dipalesa met her current business
partner, Pitchov Kumwimba-Ngombe.
They came up with the idea of a beauty
pageant called Miss Glamorous Free
State. To Dipalesa working as a mentor
for younger girls has been interesting
and takes a lot as she almost feels
responsible for the girls. She describes
the Miss Glamorous pageant as a
platform where young girls get the
opportunity to grow, to learn and to
better themselves for the future. “Now
that I get to work behind the scenes,
I realise what it takes to organise an
event like this,” she shares.
Miss Glamorous FS has been going
strong for six years now and the
pageant has been fortunate to have
the support of loyal sponsors. “It is a
great feeling to see your own business
become a success story and one that
has really paved the way for our girls,
especially in education where our girls
go on to get scholarships to further
their studying.”
Dipalesa is proud of having taken her
experiences and turning them into
a growing success, creating lasting
memories for the young ladies to
whom she has been a mentor.
korporatiewe omgewing gewerk het,
help. Wat ‘n verskriklik vervelige tyd
was dit nie, ek kon nie my kreatiwiteit
uitleef nie.”
Wilhelmina hou daarvan om die
tradisionele kenmerke van Suid-
Afrikaanse kosse in haar spyskaart te
behou, veral as dit by nagereg kom.
“Ek
het deelgeneem, maar nie die kursus
voltooi nie. Gelukkig kon ek mettertyd
myself leer.”
Wilhelmina kry haar inspirasie van
internasionale kookprogramme op
televisie en Netflix. “Ek en my sussies
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
het altyd die kookkompetisies saam
gekyk en kommentaar gelewer. Ons
het ook lekker saam gehuil wanneer
ons gunsteling uitval,” vertel sy
glimlaggend. Op die vraag wat vir haar
belangrik is in ‘n kompetisie, antwoord
sy, “Almal het op die ou einde hul
eie kookstyl en hul eie manier van
inspirasie vind. Jy kan dus nie dieselfde
as ‘n ander kok wees nie. Wat belangrik
is, is dat jy jou egtheid behou in
alles wat jy doen. Jy kan altyd dinge
aanleer, maar jy moet nooit ophou
eksperimenteer nie. Wees wie jy is.”
Wilhelmina vertel hoedat sy dit
altyd oorweeg het om eendag vir
Kokkedoor in te skryf. “Ek wou dit nog
altyd doen, en toe ek uiteindelik inkom
en ons almal by die meet and greet
“My grootste
worry was dat ek nie sou kon doen wat
van my verwag word nie, want ek is
‘n prentjiemens en my kop kan nogal
met my weghardloop.” Die kookspanne
op Kokkedoor bestaan uit twee kokke,
wat dit baie makliker maak vir die
deelnemers. Sy vertel hoe lekker dit
was om saam met almal te kon werk
en hul stories te kon deel tydens die
skiet van die program. Die deelnemers
kon deurentyd ook gesellig saamkuier
en mekaar better leer ken. Wilhelmina
praat met groot lof van Pasch, haar
mede-Kokkedoor wat saam met haar
die kompetisie gewen het.
Wilhelmina verduidelik hoedat
verskillende temas aan die kokke
gegee is. “My gunstelingtema was die
‘Familie-ete’. Ek het soveel van ons
land geleer, ook oor die verskillende
bestanddele wat uit ons land kom en
wat ander deelnemers in hul kosse
gebruik het.” Een van die dinge wat
sy sal onthou, is hoe sy dit geniet
het om tussen mense wat dieselfde
passie deel, te kon wees. “Kosmaak is
harde werk, so ‘n mens moet ‘n groot
passie daarvoor hê. Ons het ‘n familie
geword.”
Met die tweede laaste episode kan
Wilhelmina se nagereg beskryf word
as een uit die Kokkedoor-boek. Vir
Ek is so dankbaar om as
Fashion Fit
with SweatGear
With temperatures rising steadily and gearing up for that summer body, stylish,
lightweight and breathable active wear is needed to keep you cool this summer
Minnette Oliver started her career in image consulting and
styling in 2006 and is the founder of The South African Image
Company, an image consulting company that offers individual
styling services as well as image consultant training courses. She
recently collaborated with SweatGear to design stylish active
wear for women. SweatGear is an online apparel shop that sells
fashionable and stylish fitness items, perfect for the summer
time.
Text: WANDILE JAMA. Foto’s: PIERCE VAN HEERDEN
Text and photos: SUANNE ENGELBRECHT
Minnette found inspiration for designing for SweatGear from
working collectively as a team, brainstorming and analysing
trends to try and be ahead of the pack when designing new
active wear. She was first introduced to the brand at a pop-up
trade show where they were exhibitors. She was drawn to the
quality of the fabric used on the tights and started wearing
them regularly. In addition to the quality of fabric, she was also
impressed by the way the tights fitted and how they were squat
proof. Together with SweatGear, they decided on a collaboration
that would be beneficial for both of them.
Active wear has become a lifestyle and is worn outside
training grounds. It has become just as important as the
usual everyday wardrobe and SweatGear has catered for that
phenomenon. Most of its clients can be spotted wearing their
stylish and comfortable tights outside the gym whilst running
errands. Minnette believes fashionable active wear is a way to
express your personality and a way to have fun while working
out. SweatGear offers various tights for every personality – from
minimalistic tights, to bold and colourful tights. Stylish fitness
apparel is also a confidence booster and motivates you to work
out regularly, something SweatGear is proud of doing for its
clients.
Keep your garden and indoor plants fresh this festive season
Text: WANDILE JAMA.
Holiday programme:
1 - 20 December.
A fiesta of colour for the festive season includes hot pink, fiery
fuchsia, sizzling orange and knockout yellows, making summer
more colourful and vibrant. The festive season tends to be busy
and keeping your garden fresh may be the last thing on your
mind. However, your garden and plants don’t have to take a back
seat with these easy tips.
If you have indoor plants like Impatiens ‘Clockwork’ (a potimpatiens
with a wide colour range, including the two-tone Pink
Star and Orange Stripe) invest in a good quality potting mix and
controlled-release fertiliser. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
Water the pots once a day and spray with a liquid fertiliser once a
month.
Water your plants in the early morning or late in the afternoon to
minimise evaporation. Lightly mulch beds to keep roots cool and
moist for longer. Mulch is any material that is spread or laid over
the surface of the soil as a covering. It is used to retain moisture
in the soil, suppress weeds, keep the soil cool, and make the
garden bed look more attractive.
The festive season tends to have hot, dry weather which can
affect the grass. Minimise mowing the lawn in the morning or
afternoons and rather opt to mow in the evenings when the sun
is down. This helps keep the moisture in the roots.
Trim off dead flowers to encourage new flowers. In addition,
fertilise annuals and perennials with an organic granular fertiliser
in mid-December.
If you’re going on holiday, spread a 1-2cm layer of mulch over
the soil to conserve moisture while you are away. Before leaving,
don’t fertilise anything as your plants will need water regularly
and it will lead to new growth while you’re away.
Pinch off all buds and new growth on the roses. This also saves
water. Spray the roses with Ludwig’s Insect Spray and Chronos (a
fungicide) to repel pests and to prevent black spot while you are
away.
If you’ve gone on holiday for a long period, your grass would
likely have grown a few inches. Don’t mow the lawn in a single
mowing but rather mow it gradually. Mowing it too short will
result in weakening or even killing it.
How to shop like a
MILLENNIAL
Millennials are savvy online consumers who have grown up in an era of
technology with access to unlimited amounts of information.
The millennial purchasing power
is different from that of the older
generation and they gravitate
towards purchases that are
convenient and are an expression
of their personality. The
purchase and brand
must make them feel
good, be an easy
shopping experience
and align with
their personality
and lifestyle. We’ve
compiled four ways
on how to shop
like a millennial.
The perfect way to
make your retail
therapy even more
pleasurable. Enjoy!
28 Get It Bloemfontein December 2019 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

Download a Mobile App
Shopping apps are an alternative to making your shopping experience easier
and most websites have them. They encourage shoppers to shop anywhere,
anytime, and are convenient, fast and reliable. As millennials are technology
savvy and love instant gratification, these mobile apps are exactly what they
need. The apps offer discounts, voucher codes and are a great way to save
money.
Make the most of your promo
codes
Promo codes add an extra incentive
to entice customers to shop but
also encourage shoppers to shop
for less. Some online retailers even
offer consumers a discount on their
birthdays; the perfect way to be
rewarded for seeing another year.
Promo codes usually flood our emails,
so before you move them to spam,
always be on the lookout for them. You
never know when they can come in
handy.
Follow influencers
Brands use influencers to market
their brands and business. Millennials
would rather wait for an influencer
to review a product/service before
purchasing it. They gravitate towards
the opinion of an influencer than a
company-generated advertisement.
So depending on what you love, try
to follow influencers that are aligned
with those brands and styles. You will
be the first to hear about promotions,
giveaways, and of course, those
discount codes.
Add to cart but checkout later
The term ‘Add to Cart’ indicates that
you might be adding the item into
the basket of items you are intending
to buy but you want to continue
shopping, so it’s very common to hit
an Add to Cart button and for nothing
much to happen other than a simple
in-page confirmation and a number of
items in the ‘basket’ indicator.
Millennials have a habit of adding to
cart but either checking out at a later
stage or not checking out at all. One
of the reasons they check out at a later
stage is that they’re waiting for the
items to go on sale or are comparing
prices. Not only is this financially savvy
but it also curbs impulsive shopping.

How to travel
with young kids
Travelling with kids, especially
toddlers during the holiday season,
can be overwhelming. However, it
doesn’t have to be with these seven
useful tips.
Implement slow travel in your
next trip. According to an article
by Kyle Kowalski from the blog
Sloww.com, slow travel is having
a balanced itinerary where you
can pace yourself and eliminate
the stress of rushing around.
It’s intentional, immersive and
is about the journey and not
just the destination. It gives the
whole family, particularly the kids
a chance to relax, to just be and
to let all the impressions sink in.
Be sure to bring along something
comforting from home to help
30 Get It Bloemfontein December 2019 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

them relax. A comfort item can be
a favourite stuffed animal, small
blanket, favourite storybook, or their
go-to items at home. Carrying their
favourite teddy bear along for the
ride might help them get on to that
plane without worrying about where
it’s going to take them or how they’re
going to get there. If your child has an
item they take everywhere with them
when they’re at home, you don’t want
to forget to pack it for your trip. When
travelling by car, a comfort toy and
a favourite snack can also help them
fall asleep more easily.
When you’re travelling with babies,
always make sure you have an extra
outfit packed and accessible, not
just for your baby, but for yourself.
From diaper leaks to spit-ups
after a feeding, there are plenty of
opportunities for a baby to ruin your
shirt or pants. It’s great if you can
get your child into a clean diaper
and new outfit. But the rest of that
journey will be unpleasant for you if
you have a soaked pair of pants or a
dirty shirt.
When you’re travelling by plane
and your kids are young, you don’t
want to panic about rushing to the
boarding gate in a short period of
time. Leaving plenty of time for your
layovers means you can take care
of everything your family needs
and still have enough time to walk
casually to the gate. If travelling by
car, a stopover along the way will also
mean a lot less stress by the time you
get to your destination.
Ensure the car is prepped and ready
for the road as well as the baby car
seat being roadworthy. Check the
tyre pressure and change the oil if
needed. Strap your baby into his/her
car seat (always placed in the back
seat) correctly to ensure a safe and
comfy ride. You might want to get
window shades to protect your baby
from the sun. Always ensure your kid
is securely wearing a seat belt and is
buckled up.
When travelling by plane with a child
with special needs, explain to your
travel agent or ticket agent that you
have to be seated upfront and near
the bathroom. When waiting for
the flight to board, tell the agent(s)
at the gate that you need to be
seated first because of your child’s
disability. Once seated, inform all
flight attendants on the plane about
your child. The more they know, the
better they are to help, if needed.
Especialneeds.com advises parents to
avoid overstimulation for their child.
This prevents tantrums and another
way to prevent it is to get sensory
processing toys.
If your child experiences carsickness,
try to distract them with songs and
singing. Mayoclinic.com suggests
parents should try hard ginger
sweets, they provide some relief
from nausea associated with motion
sickness, although research has not
demonstrated a clear benefit. Try to
avoid food with strong odours as this
may aggravate the nausea. Ask your
child’s doctor to recommend overthe-counter
medicine for carsickness.
You could also have your child lie on
their back with closed eyes for a few
minutes.
How to shop for
Christmas stress free
In between Christmas carols and the end-of-the-year slump, the festive season is a time to
unwind and spend quality time with family and friends. With school holidays nearing and the
festive season upon us, ‘tis the season to be jolly, but how do you ensure you have a jolly one
without stressing over Christmas shopping? Try these five hacks and beat the holiday madness.
32 Get It Bloemfontein December 2019 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

1
Compile shopping a list
detailed
2
Shop in the morning or
early evening
It’s easy to get carried away
Early mornings or early
when shopping for Christmas
presents and impulse purchases
can quickly see spending spiral
upwards. Be organised and make
a list; this will keep you focused on
buying the items you need. Compile
a list of the gifts you’re buying for
each individual and the amount
you’re willing to spend. Making your
Christmas shopping list is a way to
ensure that you stick to the budget.
3
evenings are best as you won’t
feel pressurised and can take your
time making gifting decisions. This
also helps in avoiding shopping on
Christmas Eve and shopping under
pressure. You could even shop the
day after Christmas as there are often
incredible sales and most items will
be perfectly good gifts for the next
year. Be on the lookout for sales
throughout the year.
Research the best prices
Before shopping, research the best prices from different retailers
and make a note. If shopping online, abandon the cart at checkout,
sometimes the business will email you a discount voucher the next day
to encourage you to finish your checkout. Sign up for the company’s
newsletter or download its app. Some of them will offer you a voucher for
joining. You could also look through your old gift cards; they can come
in handy at this time of the year. Use your discounts if you are a student,
teacher, senior or veteran.
4
Keep track of presents
Have a designated area for
presents, such as a specific
room or section of a closet.
Ensure that the present
won’t be ruined by variations of
temperature such as humidity.
Write the name of the designated
gift-receiver on a removable sticker
or piece of tape. That way you’ll
remember whom you bought it for.
Cross their name off the list as soon as
possible to avoid forgetting that you
have already bought them something
5
Leave the kids at home
The festive season is an
exciting period for the kids
but not as exciting for the
pocket or bank balance.
Christmas shopping with kids could
lead to overspending and spending
an ample amount of time in the
stores. Avoid shopping with them and
rather stick to your detailed shopping
list and budget.
Reason to
WineSeventy reasons to enjoy
Roodeberg this festive season
Roodeberg, the legendary red blend that has been bringing friends together since 1949, celebrates its 70th
anniversary this year. A true South African original that’s stood the test of time, the wine was developed by a
pioneer of the SA wine industry, Dr Charles Niehaus, and was one of our country’s biggest export wine brands. It
wasn’t until 2004 that it became readily available to us here at home ... and for a long while, locals could only get
their hands on a bottle through a wine farming acquaintance with a KWV quota. The stories go that bartering
sought-after test match tickets, biltong and the like in return for a bottle or two was a common occurrence.
For many Roodeberg still conjures up fond memories of people, places and occasions, and of sharing special
life-changing moments with family and friends, often with rare vintages squirrelled away. Catch all the action of
Roodeberg’s 70th anniversary year by joining the Roodeberg community on Facebook or follow @Roodeberg_
Wine on Instagram and Twitter. Cheers!
travel bag
How to pack your
Packing is mostly perceived as a tedious task, even for seasoned
travellers. In some cases, it may be the reason why people tend to
over pack or sometimes even forget the basic essentials.
If you’re going on an international trip or taking
a short left, always make sure you’re
perfectly prepped for your
vacation.
THEY SAY
HYBRIDS
LACK POWER
N O T I N O U R W O R L D
When packing for a trip, gather all the items and garments you’re thinking
of packing and anticipate needing, then put half of them back. Pack
mostly neutral-coloured tops and bottoms so that each item will be
interchangeable and match the others. When ‘decluttering’ your items for a
trip, pack clothes that fit you well, outfits that go together and nothing that
you ‘might wear’. In most cases, after a trip you tend to realise that you over
packed and barely wore some of the clothes while on vacation. To prevent
this from happening, go for a minimalistic approach. Ensure you pack
the number of outfits that you need and don’t throw in ‘extra items’ just
because there is still enough luggage space. Save the space for gifts and
items you’ll buy on holiday.
Cover folded clothes with a dry-cleaning bag as a dry-cleaning bag has a
slippery surface that prevents folded clothes from creasing in a suitcase.
Place a dry-cleaning bag in between each layer of clothing. To get a certain
layer easily, simply pull the ends of the bag up on either side. To save
luggage space, roll up underwear, socks and scarves in small balls and pack
them in between the sides of the suitcase. This will leave extra space for
larger clothing items.
Lexus Hybrids are dual-energy
powerhouses that get your pulse racing
straight off the line. With two sources of
energy, these cars exhibit incredible
performance, responsiveness and
effi ciency.
Lexus Hybrid Drive is an innovative
system that adds to the overall
performance of our cars.
l e x u s . c o . z a
Pack all your shoes in a resealable big bag to prevent them from dirtying
your clothes. It’s also an easier way to have them in one bag than in
between your clothes. This hack also helps you manage the amount of
shoes you intend on packing.
When packing fragile objects or breakables, use clothing as a buffer or
padding to protect them. Wrap the fragile items in thick, sturdy clothing
and place them in between the clothes in the suitcase. Pack your toiletries
in containers to prevent them from leaking and to save luggage space. A
travel hack from a travel blog by travelfashiongirl.com advises travellers to
opt for test tubes. They’re tiny, compact, and clear, making them perfect
for travel. Clear plastic containers are also useful when travelling. Transfer
enough lotion, sunscreen, and face cream in each plastic container.
Estimate how much you’ll need and opt for that instead of travelling with
big product containers.
Always pack a small emergency medical kit in your toiletry bag or small bag
that is stocked with elastoplast, pain relievers, cold medicine, medicine for
stomach trouble, itch relief ointment, antibiotics (you can ask your doctor
for an emergency prescription before you travel), and ear plugs (life savers
on long-haul flights and trains).
