Welcome

Welcome to another exciting brochure packed full of events at

Huntingdon Hall, the Swan Theatre and the Vesta Tilley Studio. We are

delighted to once again be programming with Royal Porcelain Works, so

take a look and get booking!

This year we are hoping to be more inclusive and accessible than ever. One

way in which we will be doing this is hosting Tea Dances that bring young

people together with elders, those living with dementia, their family, friends and

carers. Make sure to look out for special events throughout the year.

We are also offering some fantastic chances for you to get involved with new

classes at the Swan Theatre. We are thrilled to be working with the prestigious

Worcester-based Dancefest to bring you classes for a range of age groups. We

are also combining forces with Entwn9 to offer fun and exciting Musical Dance

Classes once a month. If you are looking for a slower-paced hobby why not try

Living Playfully - Adult Drama Classes which will give you the chance to unlock

your love of theatre in a nurturing and welcoming environment.

Not forgetting a whole host of theatre, live music, dance, plus, brought to

you by the same team behind the record-breaking pantomime, don’t miss

Worcester Rep’s latest production, Sherlock Holmes Rides Again! in The

Commandery Gardens, guaranteed to be a fun-filled event, book early to avoid

disappointment!

Enjoy browsing the brochure and we hope to see you soon!

Simon Evans’ last show, Genius 2.0

Mark Harrison Band

Thursday 9th April at

7.30pm. Tickets £11

Mark Harrison is widely considered one of the

most original and interesting artists currently

operating in the UK. His highly individual,

all-original music has taken him and his band

(consisting of some of the UK’s best roots

musicians) to some of the top venues and festivals in the UK, attracting

acclaim wherever he goes. Mark takes elements of roots music, including

folk, blues and gospel, to create something new that is very much his own

genre. Each song is a snapshot of life or has a story to tell, like a 3-minute film

or novel. His live shows are well-known not only for the music but also for

his introductions and explanations of the songs, and audiences frequently

comment on how big a part these play in their enjoyment of the shows.

In 1899, Scott Joplin started a musical revolution

which resonates to this day, bringing the

syncopated rhythms of African music together

with Western forms and melodies in the tradition of Sousa and Stephen

Foster. The result was ragtime, and in launched a craze which would change

musical history everywhere in the world, opening the doors to Dixieland, jazz,

rock ‘n’ roll, RnB and finally hip hop. This concert, featuring the outstanding

dancers of Academy Theatre Arts, traces the early years of Joplin’s emergence

and the influence he had on the next generation of musical giants including

Eubie Blake, James Reese Europe and George Gershwin.

mentalism and magic. Through arguments, laughter and tears, they attempt

new writing, physical theatre, comedy, a vivid musical score and, of course,

magic to tell the story of a spellbinding woman who refuses to go quietly.

Elin Manahan Thomas – soprano; Elizabeth Kenny –

lute, chitarrone

Two of the UK’s leading artists present an intriguing

programme highlighting political ‘games’ of renaissance Europe. Queen

Elizabeth I gloried in her reputation as the world’s most famous virgin.

Unmarried until the end, throughout her reign she used her maidenhood

as a pawn, promising one great European after another the greatest gift she

could bestow: her hand in marriage. Through all this turbulent time the Tudor

court buzzed with music, and the cult of ‘Oriana’ gave rise to the madrigal and

the popularity of the lute. Elizabeth employed two official royal composers:

Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. The influence of continental music by them

permeates vast numbers of works by English and Scottish composers.

of Vesta, ‘celibacy’ is a way of life. However, for reluctant

virgin, Frigella the Fulfiller, this means her only chance at ‘Shagamus’ is to

escape to the Temple of Venus. A plan is needed and this must be expertly

implemented to avoid a nasty punishment. Sadly, with Frigella’s charmingly

stupid friend, Bimbus, things will never be straightforward, especially with the

High Priestess, Virginia Creeper, suspicious of her every move! Don’t miss this

hilarious evening of farcical confusion and outrageous innuendo… it may also

(Amateur Hirer)

By Sue Townsend

Tuesday 16th – Saturday 20th June at

7.45pm. Tickets £11 (Concessions £10)

Buy 10 tickets and get the 11th free!

Sue Townsend’s Bazaar and Rummage is a witty and sometimes moving

comedy which highlights the serious social problems that come with

agoraphobia. The play brings together five agoraphobics who

have been persuaded to venture out of their homes to run a

jumble sale. She has drawn real women, not stereotypes

and infused her script with sharply-observed humour.

Sue once suffered from agoraphobia for three weeks

and during that time it forced her to act in the most

ridiculous fashion. It was caused by her hating where

she lived. The answer was to move and as

soon as she made that decision she was

cured. All agoraphobics suffer great

anxiety at the thought of going

out. It is very sad but most

sufferers can and will laugh

about their experiences.

Tickets £17 (Concessions £15)

This top tribute show is more than just a

tribute! The Unravelling Wilburys are the

complete package; a great combination of

brilliant musicianship, tongue in cheek humour

and have received rave reviews throughout

the UK. The band play their songs in their

familiar country-rock style whilst stealing a few

choice numbers from those famous five icons,

Messrs Orbison, Harrison, Dylan, Petty and Lynne!

The brilliant Unravelling Wilburys are made up of Sticky Willy, Thumper, Blind

Melon, Walter and Honky Tonk Wilbury, ‘the real Wilbury brothers’! Their

show tells the story of how their songs were stolen (allegedly) by Messrs

Orbison, Harrison, Dylan, Petty and Lynne at Nashville’s Tootsies Bar and the

hard road they had to tread to get ‘em back.

The Bench

Friday 19th June at 7.30pm. Tickets £16

(Concessions £13, Groups of 8+ £11)

Waiting for Godot meets Still Game. A hilarious play full of twists and turns,

intrigue and sharp wit written by the award-winning Keir McAllister (Live at

The Apollo, Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats), The Bench tells the tale of an epic

conflict over a public bench! Sandy (a pompous man past his prime) is furious

to discover someone has scattered his flower arrangement over his “memorial

bench”. Instantly Sandy blames Joe (a young office worker on his break

relaxing on said bench), so beginning a tirade of rants, uncompromising

solutions, and unreasonable demands that

makes this shared journey of self-discovery an

amusing ride. See how the two generations fight

it out in a battle that will change them forever,

and where they may finally answer the eternal

question of “When is a bench not a bench?”.

Based on the DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony

award-winning fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters you know

to life on stage. Featuring amazing sets and costumes, Shrek proves that beauty is

truly in the eye of the ogre. Be transported Far Far Away with Shrek and Donkey as

they set off to rescue Princess Fiona from her tower. It’s going to be a hard task –

she happens to be guarded by a dragon! Add evil Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairy tale

misfits, and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got an irresistible mix of adventure,

laughter and romance. The talented cast of 8 to 18-year-olds are planning to make

this all-singing, all-dancing, show another sell-out hit so book early!

How to book tickets

In Person:

The Box Office is situated at Huntingdon Hall in Crowngate Shopping Centre and is open

10am - 5pm Monday to Saturday. There is a Box Office at the Swan Theatre but please note that

this is only open 45 minutes before an event and tickets can only be purchased for that day’s

performance.

By Telephone:

Tel: (01905) 611427

Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm

Tickets can be booked or held on reservation for up to four working days but must be paid for in

full 4 days prior to the performance. Worcester Live reserves the right to release tickets for sale that

are not paid for within these time limits. Please note that all transactions other than those in person

will be subject to a £3 booking fee* and tickets will be automatically posted out unless the event falls

within a week of the booking. In this case tickets will be held in the Box Office for collection but still

incur a booking fee. Please note that most ticket prices include a £1 restoration fee which is used to

help restore our buildings and invest in new equipment.

*Worcester Live reserves the right to amend the booking fee at any time

Online:

Tickets for most shows can be purchased online through the Worcester Live website

(worcesterlive.co.uk). Tickets purchased online can either be posted out or collected from

the Box Office. Please note that there will be an additional charge for postage (if selected), and a

£3 booking fee per transaction. Please note that most ticket prices include a £1 restoration fee

which is used to help restore our buildings and invest in new equipment.

By Post:

(Worcester Live, Huntingdon Hall, Crowngate, Worcester WR1 3LD)

When booking by post please phone the Box Office first to confirm availability and price of

tickets including booking fee. Please include a cheque made payable to Worcester Live Charitable

Trust Ltd including the booking fee (£3). Tickets will be posted out automatically unless the

event date falls within one week of the booking when they will be kept at the Box Office for

collection. Please note that most ticket prices include a £1 restoration fee which is used to help

restore our buildings and invest in new equipment.

Payment:

We accept all major credit and debit cards. Payment can also be made by cheque, payable to

‘Worcester Live Charitable Trust Ltd.’

Information For Disabled People

There are a limited number of wheelchair spaces available at Huntingdon Hall and The Swan

Theatre. Should you need the service of a companion, their ticket is complimentary. Front of

House facilities at both venues are fully accessible for wheelchairs. We welcome guide dogs and

assistance dogs. Please advise the Box Office at the time of booking, so that suitable arrangements

can be made to accommodate your dog without causing obstruction in the auditorium.

Huntingdon Hall has an induction loop system that works in conjunction with hearing aids

switched to position ‘T’. The Swan Theatre has an infrared hearing assistance system that works

either with a hearing aid or without. Receiving equipment is available on free loan. Please advise

the Box Office or Front of House staff if you require any particular assistance and we will do all

we can to help.

Concessions

Where available, concessions apply to retired over 60s, students, children under 16 and the

unwaged.* Eligibility for concessions should be advised at the time of booking and proof may be

required. *For some shows this may differ. Please contact the Box Office for more information.

Student Tickets

Students and 16-25 year-olds can sign up to receive £5 tickets for Worcester Live shows.* Visit

www.worcester-rep.co.uk/students to get your Student Pass. Turn up at one of our venues 30

minutes before the show starts and present your Student Pass along with an NUS Card, Student

ID or proof of age and you can then purchase your ticket for just £5.

*Subject to availability and excluding all hirers. Please contact the Box Office for more information.

Group Bookings

With every 10 tickets purchased for a single event, the 11th is free. Where there is a mixture of

full price and concessionary tickets in a party, the free ticket will be allocated to the cheapest

ticket purchased. This discount may not be available for private hirer events.

Vesta Tilley Studio Admission:

Due to the nature of the space, it will not be possible to admit audience members once a

performance has started. Similarly, audience members leaving the Studio during a performance will

not be re-admitted (except for after an interval).

General Information

It is not possible to give refunds on ticket sales. Ticket exchanges are at the discretion of the Box

Office Manager. There is an administration charge of £1.50 per ticket exchanged.

Both the Swan Theatre and Huntingdon Hall are no smoking venues.

Hirers

Worcester Live can accept no responsibility for the artistic content of

hirers’ events.
