Celtics boys basketball gets win over Bulls Prep

out a huge sigh of relief
when the final buzzer rang
through the gym.
A sigh of relief because
they watched a 12-point
lead after the first quarter
and a 12-point lead at halftime
turn into a three-point
deficit at one point in the
third quarter and then briefly
to start the fourth.
But with key plays down
the stretch from Joe Alfirevich
and Noah Vassal,
Providence held on for a
66-61 win over Chicago
Bulls College Prep on Jan.
28 in New Lenox.
“All things considered,
we’ll take the win, especially
at this time of the
year with regional seeding,”
Murphy said. “Joe
hit some big free throws
[down the stretch]. I think
we were 11-of-12 from the
free-throw line. That was
huge. We lost the turnover
battle, we lost the rebound
battle, but we won the freethrow
battle.”
Vassal finished with 15
points, and Alfirevich had
12 to lead the Celtics (10-
13).
Alfirevich hit four free
throws in the final seconds
to help seal the win.
Alfirevich scored all of
his points in the second
half.
“[The Bulls] were doing
a good job and all my teammates
were helping me out
and they were playing hard,
which eventually opened
things up for me and I was
able to attack in the lane,
get a couple layups and get
more confident," he said.
Providence hockey
advances to Kennedy Cup
semis; Davis named All-
State
The Celtics swept their
quarterfinal series with
Mount Carmel in the Kennedy
Cup playoffs. Providence
won the opening
game 8-1 on Thursday,
Jan. 30, and completed the
two-game sweep with a 6-1
victory Saturday, Feb. 1, in
Palatine.
Senior forward Tommy
Davis was also named to
the AHAI All-State team.
Providence will take on
St. Rita in the Kennedy
Cup semifinals.

Abby Kiaupa won in November.
The Athlete of the
Month competition pits
featured Athlete of the
Week selections from our
south suburban newspapers
against one another in
an online voting contest.

begin Feb. 10.

each, while Ryan Kraft
added 14.
Central then fell 67-56
to Lincoln-Way East on
Friday, Jan. 31, despite 26
points from Curran and 12
from Tingley.
The Knights (16-7)
bounced back to beat Illiana
Christian 88-67 on
Saturday, Feb. 1, at the
Beecher Shootout. Tingley
poured in 28 points and
Mike Maloney added 17.
Central drained 17
3-pointers in the game,
including nine in the first
quarter.
Warriors drop three
Lincoln-Way West’s
boys basketball team fell
79-56 to Plainfield North
on Jan. 28, dropped a 52-
51 heartbreaker to Stagg on
Thursday, Jan. 30, and lost
72-37 to Lemont on Saturday,
Feb. 1.
Connor Jenkins had a
huge game against Plainfield
North, finishing with
21 points and six rebounds.
Billy Dozier added seven
points.
