OUR STORY

“MOUNT KELLY SWIMMING COMBINES

EXCELLENCE IN THE POOL WITH EXCELLENCE

IN THE CLASSROOM AND IT IS THE COMPLETE

INTEGRATION OF THE TWO THAT MAKES

WORKING AT MOUNT KELLY SO SPECIAL”

Mount Kelly Swimming began in 1978

with a 4-lane pool and one local girl,

Sharron Davies, who had already

competed at the 1976 Olympics. Since

then we have gone from strength to

strength and we opened our 8-lane 50m

pool in 2016. We promote a nurturing but

challenging environment in which every

pupil is encouraged to take risks, think

independently, and strive to achieve. The

fierce determination and ambition of our

swimmers reach beyond the pool to the

classroom and influence the ethos of the

School where Commitment and Courage

are two of our six core values together

with Compassion, Humility, Respect and

Integrity.

COMMITMENT

“MOVING AWAY FROM HOME AND

EVERYTHING FAMILIAR WAS THE

HARDEST THING I’VE HAD TO DO BUT I

HAVE NEVER FELT MORE AT HOME THAN

I DO HERE. IT CAN BE TOUGH AT TIMES

BUT EVERYONE IS ALWAYS HAPPY TO

HELP AND SUPPORT ME IN ANY WAY

THEY CAN. MOUNT KELLY REALLY IS

LIKE ONE BIG FAMILY AND I LOVE IT”

“THIS IS THE END OF MY

WAS NERVOUS AT FIRST

BUT EVERYONE IS SO KIND I

REALLY LOVE IT”

Both the 50m and 25m

pools are within a short

walk of all the boarding

accommodation and

classrooms. Our academic,

pastoral and swimming staff

meet weekly to ensure our

swimmers are effectively

managing the demands

of both their studies and

training.

“THE INDIVIDUAL

FOCUS THAT WE CAN

OFFER EACH ATHLETE

MAKES COACHING

AT MOUNT KELLY SO

REWARDING”

Stroke control, stroke efficiency, pacing, race tactics

and the ongoing development of starts and turns are all

at the heart of our training methods. The training needs

of an elite performer are complex and demanding and,

in order to excel at this level of swimming, it is essential

our athletes understand and are fully committed to

these needs.

At least

of training is allocated to strength

and conditioning according to

age, event and ability.

We believe that muscle

balance, body balance, core

strength, functional strength

and endurance are all essential

for the competitive athlete. Our

progressive land training, mobility

and pre and post pool routines

ensure that swimmers minimise

the risk of injury and are able to

progress to harder workloads in

the pool.

EDUCATION

We are extremely proud of the consistently strong

public examination results all Mount Kelleians achieve.

In 2019 our swimmers were awarded places at the best

sports universities in the UK (Loughborough, Stirling

and Bath) to study courses ranging from Criminology

with Sociology, Marine Biology, History, Geography and

Applied Sports Science.

The Mount Kelly Swimming Programme is fully aligned

with the British Swimming Optimal Athlete Development

Framework (OADF) within which we develop the

person, the athlete and the performer to ensure longterm

success in the sport. Each squad is managed by

a designated Performance Swim Coach and individual

programmes are designed for each athlete, finding

the balance between Long Course and Short Course

training in our Olympic Legacy Swim Centre.

“THE DECISION TO LEAVE HOME AT THIRTEEN

AND FOLLOW MY SWIMMING DREAM WAS A

TOUGH ONE BUT THIS WAS MADE EASIER BY

THE INCREDIBLE ACADEMIC AND PASTORAL

SUPPORT GIVEN BY THE SCHOOL, SO IT

QUICKLY BECAME MY SECOND FAMILY”

“MY EXPERIENCE AT MOUNT KELLY HAS

BEEN MEMORABLE FROM DAY ONE.

FEELING NERVOUS AND EXCITED FOR THE

JOURNEY AHEAD ARE EMOTIONS THAT

HAVE NEVER BEEN FAR AWAY”

I learnt to be super-efficient at

balancing my time between

studies and swimming. Mount Kelly

even provided me with social time to

connect with friends, something I’d lost

at home due to my commitments.

My journey has definitely been one full

of challenges, highs and lows, from

breaking British records to not achieving

a PB for a whole season, balanced with

study pressures. My determination,

combined with the unending support

from the School and coaching team, has

placed me in the position I am today.

I end my Mount Kelly journey with an

excellent education and the foundations

to continue to achieve in the pool at a

national and international level. I will miss

Mount Kelly, the pupils, staff and the

swim team; it will always have a special

place in my heart. There is nothing

quite like it and I would do it all again

tomorrow.
