Christchurch which could result
in water restrictions.
On February 3, more than 260
million litres of water were used
across the city, an average of
552-litres per
person, resulting
in city
council revealing
the water
supply is under
“extreme pressure.”
A similar
amount of
water was

temperatures in the city peaked at
35 deg C.
The measurements are the highest
recorded for the city’s water
use in a decade, the city council
said, calling for people to ease
back on their water use in the
coming days.

Sports centre refresh on track
THE REFRESH of Graham
Condon Recreation and Sports
Centre is on track, the gym and
main sports hall re-opened last
week.
The remainder of the centre –
including pools – will re-open in
early April.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox said
facility users will be impressed
with the refresh
so far.
“We have refurbished
the
reception area,
including the
toilets, and the
gym change

fresh paint,
new flooring
and new energy efficient lighting
have also spruced the facility up
after nearly a decade of constant
use by the community.”
The gym equipment remains
the same and no changes
have been made to the main
sports hall.
Mr Cox says while there is still
significant maintenance to be
carried out on the pools, including
tiling repairs and work on
the toilets and change rooms, the
project is progressing well.

demand for water doesn’t lessen
significantly, we won’t have
adequate flow and pressure in
some areas, which is also a big
concern when it comes to the
city’s preparedness for fighting
fires,” she said.
“We don’t want to have to
impose water restrictions, but if
the demand doesn’t ease off, we
will have no choice. We need
people to stop using sprinklers
and garden irrigation systems
to water lawns and gardens. If
your garden needs watering,
use a hand-held hose and water
before 7am or after 9pm, when
it’s cooler. And please, avoid
watering lawns or grass berms.”
Level four water restrictions,
the highest level, were
introduced in parts of Banks
Peninsula last week, after
streams that supply drinking
water to Akaroa, Duvauchelle
and Takamatua dropped
suddenly.
Level 4 restrictions means all
use of water outside the house
must cease.
Golfing legend launches
hub aimed at new players
SIR BOB Charles was the special
guest for the launch of the
North-East Hub. The event was
held at Waimairi Beach Golf
Club attracting new participants
that were keen to try golf along
with members of the newly
establish hub.
Sir Bob Charles welcomed
everyone to the launch of the
North-East Hub. “It’s great to see
so many families out here today
getting involved with golf. Golf
is a game for a lifetime and at
83 I still enjoy playing this great
game since my introduction to
clubs and balls as a 3 year old.
It’s great to see that the clubs are
working together to grow participation
with the North-East
Hub,” said Sir Bob.
As part of the event Sir Bob
Charles played an exhibition
hole on the par 3 12 th hole. He
was joined by North-East Hub
members Toby van Onselen
and Lachie Mackay along with
the hub co-ordinator James
Robinson. Also getting in on the
action were Baxter and Oscar
van Onselen who caddied for
older brother Toby and fellow
hub member Lachie.

of the Selwyn Hub that

objective of the North-East Hub
is to provide young people and
families with regular and affordable
opportunities to learn and
play golf. The participating clubs
in the new hub are Rangiora,

membership the hub allows the
juniors to play rounds at all four
courses. Regular events will also
be delivered across the courses
to provide playing opportunities
for young people at all stages of
development. These will incorporate
fun events for those newer to
the game playing from shortened
tees over 6-9 holes through to

junior members from the
participating clubs who are now

Take a free bus to fireworks event
A FREE park and ride service
is going to make it easy to
get to the YES Power Sparks
concert in North Hagley Park
on Saturday.
Sparks, which features the
Christchurch Symphony
Orchestra and a dazzling
fireworks finale, is one of the
biggest events on the Summer-
Times calendar and traditionally
attracts a crowd of more
than 50,000.
To make travel to the event
easy, a free park and ride service
will operate from Canterbury
University’s Clyde Rd car
park and from the Cranley St
bus stop by Eastgate Shopping
Centre.
Between 5pm and 8.30pm
people will be able to park at
the university and the mall
main car park and then catch a
free bus to North Hagley Park.
At the conclusion of Sparks,
buses will return people to the
university and Eastgate. The
departing buses will leave from
Park Tce (across from Peterborough
St) between 10 and
10.15pm.
“The Night Noodle Market is
on the same night as Sparks so
we are expecting a huge crowd
in North Hagley Park.
“The free park and ride
service will ease the pressure
on the central city parking
and make it easy for people to
enjoy the night’s festivities,’’ city
council events and arts manager
Lucy Blackmore said.
“We are also going to have
cycle stands and scooter
parking available in the park,
just past the Armagh St bridge,
for those who want to bike or
scooter in for the night.’’
For those intending to travel
by car to the event, there will be
a drop-off point on Rolleston
Ave between Gloucester St and
Armagh St (outside Christ’s
College).
People with mobility passes
will be able to park in the mobility
parking area on Chester
St West.
“It you do plan to come by
car please be aware that the
Botanic Gardens Armagh St car
park will be closed to incoming
traffic from 3pm and closed to
all traffic from 5pm,’’ Ms Blackmore
said.

Big turnout for Brighton event
THOUSANDS OF people were at
Thomson Park for the 10th I Love New
Brighton festival on Waitangi Day.
More than 30 community groups
were showcased through have-a-go
activities including sports, circus tricks
and a police vehicle speed detection
device.
The main stage started with a kapa
haka performance and also featured
the Natural Magic Pirates and band
Hypnumb.
It was the first year of the event since
Thomson Park was upgraded with a
new basketball court.
The event was funded by local
business sponsors and the Coastal-
Burwood Community Board.

people entertained.

variation that includes cooked
quinoa for added protein and
fibre. It’s vegan and glutenfree,
and for just 331 calories,
each delicious bowl offers 13

COLOURFUL:
A sesame ginger
quinoa salad.
Sesame Ginger Quinoa
Salad
Ingredients
1 cup quinoa, rinsed
2 cups water
¼ tsp salt
1½ cups shelled frozen edamame
3 medium carrots, peeled and
diced
½ yellow pepper, diced
½ red pepper, diced
1 cup red cabbage, chopped
2 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp rice vinegar
3 tsp fresh ginger, finely minced
1 Tbsp sesame seeds
Directions
Place the quinoa, water, and
salt in a covered pot. Heat on
high until it boils, lower the heat
to low, and cook for about 15min
or until the quinoa is soft and the
water absorbed.
Pour the quinoa into a
medium-sized bowl, and mix
in the frozen edamame, carrots,
peppers, and cabbage.
In a small bowl, make the
dressing by mixing the sesame oil,
rice vinegar, minced ginger, and
sesame seeds.
Pour the dressing over the

Ingredients
½ small red cabbage, shredded in
small pieces
3 small ripe tomatoes, diced
1 yellow capsicum, seeded, diced
½ cucumber, diced, with skin on
120g small white button
mushrooms, sliced
¾ cup pitted Kalamata olives
3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp salt, or more to taste
Directions
Combine all vegetables in a
large mixing bowl and mix well.
In a small mixing bowl, combine
lemon juice, olive oil and salt.
Pour over the chopped vegetables
and mix well. Serve.

Proposed New Lease
and Licence
Public notice is hereby given that the Christchurch City Council is
considering granting to the Christchurch Archery Club Incorporated a lease
and a licence over separate areas of land held within Rawhiti Domain.
The proposed occupations on Rawhiti Domain (Sec 2 SO 491011, Record of
Title 732600) are each for a period of up to 33 years, including all renewals,
and comprise, in accordance with the requirements of:
• Section 54(1)(b) of the Reserves Act 1977, a ground lease over an area of
land approximately 783m 2 for the purpose of premises, including existing
clubrooms and the addition of a new adjoining building, for an indoor
archery range.
• Section 54(1)(d) of the Reserves Act 1977, a licence to occupy over an area
of land approximately 813m 2 for the purpose of periodic exclusive use as
a car park.
Rawhiti Domain is administered by the Council as a recreation reserve
subject to Section 17 of the Reserves Act 1977.

Who we are
Allied Press Limited employs over 450 people on a permanent
basis across its 15 sites in the South Island. We operate across
multiple media platforms (print, online, digital) delivering news,
information and entertainment through our various regional
and city publications, including printing and publishing of
newspapers from our print centre in Dunedin and a commercial
print facility in Alexandra.
The role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the main purpose of
the position is to ensure smooth running of our newspaper,
commercial publication and facility maintenance.
Some of the key accountabilities include:
• Production remains uninterrupted.
• Production equipment availability is maximised.
• Preventative maintenance is prioritised to ensure minimal
downtime.
The business has just invested in a major upgrade to the
electrical/electronic systems on the printing press, scheduled to
commence in the New Year. This presents the ideal opportunity
to learn from the installation and commissioning engineers to
enable the successful candidate to hit the ground running.
Your skills and experience
We are looking for a registered Electrician ideally from an
Industrial background holding a current practising licence. The
ideal candidate would be competent and confident in using
computers and experienced in PLC’s, Analogue/Digital control
and AC/DC motor drive systems. Although not essential,
knowledge of Goss Press and Ferag mailroom will be a bonus.

This is a full-time permanent position working the day shift from
Monday to Friday, with rostered ‘On call’.
