BE SAFE

IN THE SEA

STOP AND THINK

l Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level.

Check times of high and low tide so

you don’t get cut off.

l The water is powerful and there may

be dangers under the water.

l Rips are strong currents running out to

sea that can easily take swimmers out

beyond their depth. Know what to do

if you get caught in one.

STAY TOGETHER

l Always go with someone else when

you go into water. Friends and family

can help in an emergency.

l Where possible swim at a lifeguarded

beach or swimming area and only

swim between the red and yellow flags.

l Don’t use inflatables in the sea.

Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed

for pools, not the sea where they can

easily be swept out.

FLOAT

l If you are in trouble in the water,

float until you feel calm.

l Hold onto anything that floats, like

a bodyboard or ball.

l If you don’t have anything that floats,

then float on your back.

l When you are calm, raise your arm

and shout for help.
