Six local boxers enter<br />
open-air tournament<br />

Openair boxing willfeature at the<br />
Waipara Domain this month.<br />
It is afirst for theregion,and the<br />
<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> and Leithfield Boxing<br />
Clubs, who are hostingthe 4Bs—Blues,<br />
Brews, BBQand Boxing on Saturday,<br />
<strong>February</strong> 29.<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> hassix boxers<br />
competing in the competition —Vanessa<br />
Smith, Jamie Tapp, AnnaSidey, Debs<br />
Bean, LyndaWaghorn and Matais<br />
Ibanez, all of whom have beentraining<br />
hard forthe tournament.<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Boxing’s head<br />
coach, Bill Newton, is excited to have<br />
them boxing on hiscard,with all but<br />
Lynda and Annahaving foughtbefore.<br />
Lynda will be fighting aboxertrained<br />
by one of Bill’s sons, introducing alittle<br />
fathersonrivalry.<br />
Vanessawill be fightingatough boxer<br />
from Malborough.<br />
Bill sayshehas worked with Vanessa<br />
and has watched her mental strength<br />
and skilllevel increase.<br />
Jamie will be fighting aboxerfrom<br />
Boxfit BrosinChristchurch.<br />
‘‘Jamie leaves nothing behind and is<br />
sure to create somerealfireworks in this<br />
fight ,’’ Bill says.<br />
Anna will be fighting Christina<br />
Walford, whotrainsout of Champ Nation<br />
boxing in Christchurch.<br />
Bill saysneither will be prepared to<br />
take abackward step, so it promises to<br />
be an actionpacked contest.<br />
Lynda will takeonDenniseRoberts,<br />
BOXING<br />
who fightsout of Smack Fitness Gym in<br />
Blenheim.<br />
Lynda hasworked through some<br />
injuriesleading up to the tournament,<br />
but is now in the bestpossible shape for<br />
the fight.<br />
Matais is fighting the experienced<br />
Jamal Coulingfrom Champ Nation<br />
Boxing.Both are guaranteed to put on an<br />
actionpacked and exciting fight, Bill<br />
says.<br />
‘‘Matais works hardintraining so is<br />
very prepared for this.’’<br />
Debs willbefighting Sarah Martin,<br />
from Gore Boxing.They willfightfor the<br />
Ann NewtonMemorialShield.<br />
Both willmeetagainat the New<br />
Zealand Championships later in the year<br />
when they will fight for the middleweightdivision<br />
title.<br />
Anew assistantcoach will help Bill<br />
with the boxers.<br />
Kelly Mckay is workingtowards her<br />
probational coach’s licence,due to the<br />
growth of the sport in <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong>.<br />
Shewill sither level 1test later this<br />
year.Kelly also runs Boxfit classes on<br />
Fridays andSundays.<br />
Buses will be running from Hanmer<br />
Springs andLeithfield, ‘‘and all stops in<br />
between’’.<br />
Abandwill play after the tournament,<br />
from 5pmto8pm, with beerand wine<br />
available to buy, along with food<br />
barbecued by the Waipara Primary<br />
school.<br />
