the first Earth Day in 1970, Earth Day 

Network is the world’s largest recruiter to 

the environmental movement, working

our planet. As the 50th Anniversary of 

Earth Day approaches, the time is long 

overdue for a global outpouring of energy, 

enthusiasm, and commitment to create a 

new plan of action for our planet. Earth 

Day 2020 can be the catalyst that galvanizes

Palm Springs will be hosted by activist 

Richard Nobel and may feature Mayor 

Pro Tem Christy Holstege. In the 70's, I 

remember my first earth-day and really 

thought little about it, but they gave me a 

small tree. I planted it in the side yard and 

it grew up with me and within me grew my 

love and understanding of our planet. As 

an adult, I traveled the globe and everyone 

I met had the same concerns and love for 

this alien planet. But it also impacted my 

voting, my work and just about all areas 

.I was made better by that day when I was 

a child, and it gave me hope all my life 

that when everyone does a little, a lot can 

happen. When I gave my dad the little tree, 

he told me a joke I would keep all my life. 

He told the fable of the Chicken and the 

Pig. When a pig and a hen wanted to open 

a restaurant, the pig was really committed 

in that dish while the chicken is only 

involved, like all of us are involved. I urge 

you to tell anyone you know, especially 

the younger ones. How much value people 

can build over time. The Japanese word 

kaizen means "change for better" both 

one time or in incrementally, like voting 

blue and then making sure our elected 

officials are making the small changes 

that make human rights the carrot and its 

aggression the stick. This is no easy task 

because society is such, that it regulates 

many but excludes the powerful, for one 

reason or another. Trump is exactly who he 

told us he was, if you don't like his many 

bankruptcies, change the law. But he knows 

the loopholes, so he didn't change a law that 

lets the rich skip out on a bill. The Earth's 

bill has arrived and we are going to pay it 

and even bankruptcy wont let you avoid it 

unless we make incremental change to the 

very system that we run by our voting.

ACTIVIST 

Following the tragic helicopter accident 

on Sunday, January 26, that took the life 

of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, 

and 7 other people in the hills near 

Calabasas, California, artists throughout 

Southern California and others in the 

U.S. have created or are in the process of 

creating murals and other art to 

memorialize Kobe. 

In Los Angeles, Hundreds of fans came 

to the sites where murals were being 

created and left flowers, photos, and 

other memorial items. Art and sports 

have always had an association, especially 

in regard to team logos and visual 

artifacts. Latinos are known to create 

memorial murals which are evident in 

L.A. The ban on wall murals in L.Al was

ARTISTS COMMEMORATE KOBE BRYANT A BASKETBALL LEGEND AND COMMUNITY 

evicted in 2013 which opened up the 

avenue for mural artists to create more 

work that is now visible throughout the 

Los Angeles area. One of the prominent 

murals to Kobe shown in this article 

was created by the muralist Muckrock 

collaborating with MR79. They began 

working on the mural the day after the 

tragic event. 

Another unique short-lived mural was 

created in Pleasanton, California on the 

outfield grounds of a Bay area baseball 

field. The mural was created by New 

Ground Technology which creates 

visual images on playing fields. The 

image is created by flattening, blowing, 

and cutting grass in different directions 

forming the image The image in this 


creation is 115-foot portrait of Kobie. An 

aerial view of the creation is shown in this 

article. 

One of Kobe's contributions to the arts 

was with the short animated film, "Dear 

Basketball". The film was written and 

narrated by Kobie with the drawing 

animation by Glen Kean and music by John 

Williams. It won the Academy Award for 

the best short animated film in the 2015- 

16 season. A still drawing from the film is 

displayed in this article.

communities through educational and 

cultural enrichment opportunities. Kobe 

Bryant. an athletic superstar and community 

activist is deserving of the accolades of the

Kobe Bryant is known for his contributions 

beyond basketball. He sponsored an 

organization called After School All-Stars 

which promotes academic achievement

the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family 

Foundation.which is aimed at improving 

the lives of youth and families in need both 

in the U.S. and globally. This organization

The Palm Springs home of The Hollywood 

Times editor, Valerie Milano, is the setting 

for a star-studded fundraising bash for 

attorney Sepi Shyne’s West Hollywood City 

Council campaign on Saturday, March 7. 

“Sepi has been a wonderful friend for many 

years now, originally when she chaired the 

HRC LA Gala. 

Our friendship has 

grown over the years. 

I believe in her. She is 

very capable and will 

be an asset to West 

Hollywood,” said Valerie 

Milano. 

As an activist with a social justice platform, 

Tyler’s endorsement is especially important 

for Sepi. If elected, she will be only the second 

lesbian on the West Hollywood City 

Council in its 35-year history. 

I interviewed Tyler for this story to find 

out why Sepi’s election to the WeHo City 

Council was important to her. Tyler feels 

that West Hollywood needs change and 

Sepi is the right person to be elected. She 

is disappointed by the West Hollywood 

City Council’s decision last year to allow 

the screening of the documentary, ‘1948: 

Creation and Catastrophe.’ Robin told me 

that an antisemitic documentary should 

not have been screened by the City of 

West Hollywood. She discussed two 

Councilmembers, John Duran and John 

Heilman, both of whom had voted to allow 

the screening.

it really offends me as a Jewish person. 

There’s a large Jewish community in 

West Hollywood and I am hoping that all 

of them rally behind Sepi.” 

She also discussed the absence of lesbians 

and on the City Council for the last 35 

years, and the lack of real diversity in general. 

Valerie Terrigno was the first and only 

lesbian elected to the first City Council of 

West Hollywood when it was incorporated 

in 1984. 

‘Here we have a woman running, of Iranian 

descent, who came to this country, who 

was an undocumented immigrant, whose 

family had to begin again, who became an 

attorney, who is popular and progressive 

and political and loving and caring. And it’s 

time. So, to have this brilliant candidate, 

who’s got personality and smarts and politics 

and is a woman, and a person of color, 

and educated and an activist is wonderful. 

West Hollywood is going away with everything. 

The developers are beginning to own 

it, that she’s not accepting money from 

developers. Right. So, it’s time for a breath 

of fresh air in West Hollywood.” 

Sepi has refused to accept any donations 

from developers. “I am running to serve 

West Hollywood residents and to put your 

needs first. I am not accepting a single 

penny from developers,” said Sepi.

lesbian who understands women’s issues, 

lesbian issues, progressive issues. I’m just 

tired of being invisible or represented by 

people that don’t represent us.” 

“But my number one thing that I absolutely 

grant to support Sepi, had I had the conversation 

with Sepi about not showing a 

movie that could incite people to be antisemitic, 

Sepi would have listened. I don’t 

believe that she would have shown that 

movie or any movie.” 

“she deserves to get in. She’s not a token. 

She’s much more experienced than most of 

them and she’s much more competent. So, 

it’s time that we broke that barrier.”
