with some great inner décor. Also check
out the Millar’s tractor spares yard on
station street as wheel as the old Mazda
dealership on Market street.
The Laboratory
17 West Belt, Lincoln
19.7kms from CBD - 20 minute drive.
Lincoln has certainly become a lot
closer as a destination in post quakes
Christchurch. And again is a lovely country
drive through Halswell or Prebbleton.
The Laboratory out at Lincoln is another
great destination. Not only is it a
restaurant and a bar but a Cinema as well.
Drive out for a meal and take in a flick!

and bars to choose from and none better
than the Ivory Bar in the heart of the
township. Set to the theme of 1920s

out. And the drive out to North Canterbury
through the new expanded North Motorway
is a very smooth ride where you can open
up on and put the foot down. Best to
wait until after peak hour traffic if you are
heading out to Rangiora on the Friday night.
Port & Eagle Brewpub

22.9kms from CBD – 30 minute drive.
The Port & Eagle brewpub is definitely one
of the great new bars on the Canterbury
landscape. Set on the banks of the
Kaiapoi River, it offers perhaps one of the
best dining and drinking views around.
Great location to head out to on a warm
summer’s night with the sun setting late.
And much like Rangiora, time to get out on
that northern Motorway and let your ride
open up. Again best to avoid peak hour
traffic out that way!

2020 Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza
The Twin Rivers event is hugely popular
and well established on the local motoring
enthusiast’s calendar, catering for all types
of vehicle and a broad range of interests.
The diverse range of vehicles has always
ensured this popular event draws large
numbers every year, and the parade is
always a crowd pleaser. Special sections for
classic trucks and vintage machinery have
been introduced due to popular demand.
Last year’s event was a great success
with over 500 cars attending, but the
organisers, Avonhead Rotary, are hoping
for a repeat of the glorious weather in 2016
which had a record attendance of 650 cars.
Paul Kelly Motor Company is once again
the principal sponsor of the event for
the seventh consecutive year. “The Twin
Rivers event is a great day out on the
Canterbury calendar and we’re delighted to
be supporting the event and Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre again in 2019’” says Ben
Harris, General Manager of PKMC.
This year’s event on Sunday 8th March 2020
will be the 22nd year the event has run.
The entry charge of $15 per display and per
spectator vehicle will go towards providing
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre with a new
van to replace one previously provided by
Avonhead Rotary.
The parade has been extended this year
also by popular request to retain some
affinity with the Christchurch rivers!
Special displays this year include the
ever popular demonstrations and test
drives of electric vehicles, and the ‘Go
Baby Go’ project, a project supported by
Sunrise Rotary which improves mobility
for disabled children, as well as displays of
some very special cars from our sponsors.
Twin Rivers is renowned for its great
atmosphere – those who come along can
enjoy live music, entertainment for all ages,
food and refreshments.
The Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza
is promoting a wider variety of vehicles
and a wider range of attractions and
entertainment, ensuring the day continues
to be enjoyable for young and old alike.
Enthusiasts and owners are invited to
showcase their much loved cars – classic,
vintage, veteran, modern day cars, sports

cars, hot rods and more. Car Clubs and
groups are welcome to set up a dedicated
display area and should contact the
organisers to arrange this. All interesting
or unusual vehicles are welcome!
Gates open at 10.30am to both the public
and those keen to display their cars.
Judging starts at 11.30am, with prize giving
held later in the day. Classic Driver are
providing prizes of a one year subscription
for the best of American, Australian,
British, European and Japanese vehicles.
There will also be a ‘Best in Show’ prize
donated by Repco.
The event has been run by the Rotary
Club of Avonhead for the past 14 years,
with club members volunteering much of
their time to plan all aspects of the event,
planning the car parade, marshalling on

When Glenn from GRC Car Audio &
Security first took the keys to his 2015
Nissan Navara NP-300 STX 4x4 in June
2015, he was one of the first people in
the South Island to own one of these
vehicles. The 2.3lt Twin Turbo Navara
was once one of the highly anticipated
and sought after models when it first
came out on to the market.
The 7 speed Auto Navara was one of
the many popular sought after utes that
came out of the early 2010s boom for
that type of vehicle. With utes going
away from being the workhorse on
the farm to being a urban city ride for
tradies and executives.
Having always been a fan of Nissan
Navara’s (this being his 5th model
that he has owned) – this was an easy
choice for him to buy the Navara
from Cockram’s at the time (Now
Christchurch Nissan).
Being in business 20 years now his first
vehicle was a Subaru Legacy.
With GRC being a fully mobile service
in Canterbury, the Navara doubles as a
mobile workshop and office. As Glenn
goes around installing GPS, stereos
and media units for his clients, it serves
as a fully equipped mobile workshop
enabling him to work from anywhere.
Talking of gear, one who works in this
industry has to walk the walk. And that
would certainly apply to someone who
installs stereo systems.

Wayne Hill has now been in the
automotive industry for 60
years. Starting off in the industry
fresh out of high school in invercargill
as a 15 year old, where he found a job
working for the local Ford Dealership
in the parts department. From there, he
moved up the South island to work with
motorbikes in gore and timaru, before
calling christchurch home and taking up
residence on Lincoln road as Wayne Hill
cars. You could say he has almost seen it
all in the automotive industry and working

XFs to motorbikes, he probably has.

is he a second hand vehicle and motorbike
dealership but he also offers mechanical
and tyre services out of his premises and
has a fulltime onsite mechanic working
alongside him offering fittings as well as
full brake work.
then there is the aMSoiL side of the
business; the official NZ dealer and supplier
of aMSoiL. aMSoiL is an american
company that formulates and packages
synthetic lubricants, additives and fuel
for everything from motorboats to wind
turbines and even racing cars. aMSoiL was
created by albert J. amatuzio - who was
a squadron commander in the US navy
air corps during World War ii. During
his time as a pilot he began researching
synthetic oils, as synthetic lubricants were
used exclusively in jet engines due to the
increased heat and stress loads caused by
supersonic flights. Albert sought to apply
these benefits to automotive engines.
Being the official NZ AMSOIL dealer, of
course Wayne would endorse it – but he
swears by it! and has been with aMSoiL
for 42 years now.
Wayne hasn’t always been directly involved
with vehicle dealerships. He did work for
a year at Begg Engineering, building and
welding front end loaders as well as making
anti roll bars for tractors. after that year
he moved into Yamaha Motorcycles taking
up residence in both gore and timaru,
proving that anything mechanical he has
had his hands on. after Yamaha he then
moved into Japanese second hand imports
automobiles; which is what he is still
currently doing today.

Skoda Kodiaq RS
There’s no denying sport utility
vehicles are the cars of choice for
today’s buyer. Sales figures globally
are heavily biased in that direction.
The choice is overwhelming, especially
in the mid-size sector. If family or
recreational requirements facilitate the
need for an SUV, but you want something
just a little bit different in your purchase –
something biased towards sporty – then
Skoda has the car for you, the Kodiaq RS.
The Kodiaq has been with us for a year
or two now, and it lands here in three
variants, an entry-level model at $41,990,
a high-grade Sportline at $64,990, and
just recently an RS model has joined
the ranks. The RS sits at $72,990 and is
characterised by its flashy looks, inside
and out, and high power driveline.
Herein lies a secret. Under the bonnet
sits a 2-litre diesel engine, and while you
wouldn’t ordinarily expect diesel to be
the basis for performance, you have to
remember that Skoda, in the past has
had many sports models with diesel
engines, and I can report that is a concept
the company does very well, even in
motorsport.
In the Kodiaq, the turbocharged fourcylinder
unit pumps out 176kW and a
feisty 500Nm at the bottom end. The
latter is the ingredient that makes the RS
so special, not only is the specific output
high, maximum torque is available from
1750rpm to 2500rpm, which is the area
where the engine wants to constantly
work.
As a result, there is dynamic engine
performance, mid-range boost will offer
a 4.2sec overtaking time (80-120km/h),
and an off-the-mark time of 7sec to make
100km/h from a standstill.
Even if you aren’t in a hurry, there is a
constant willingness from the engine that
tantalises the driver, and if you take into
account there is manufactured exhaust
sound which throbs constantly, the RS is
hard to drive without wanting to give it
some freedom.
There are several drive modes, and
depending on which is activated the
exhaust sound can be encouraged or
left in a more subtle tone. The Kodiaq is
also a pretty useful off-roader, there are
modes which channel power more usefully
through the four-wheel-drive platform.
There is also another element which adds
spice to the driveline, power is channeled
through a seven-speed direct shift
transmission, and this configuration is one
of my favourites.
DSG is more of a manual-type gearbox,
although there are only two foot pedals;
the beauty of this is the lack of load
through the transmission, engine power
is mostly unimpeded, and with quick
shifts the feeling of performance is well
enhanced.
I took the test car through some of the
tight, hilly roads close to Sheffield, and
although the weather had closed in and
the roads were greasy I felt at ease in the
RS.
Grip in the first instance is supplied by
sticky Pirelli Scorpion tyres (235/45 x
20in) and they offer substantial steering
feel along with direct turn-in.
It has to be remembered the Kodiaq
has traditional SUV handling, it sits high
at almost 1.7m, and with long-travel
suspension it isn’t as nimble as a sedan,
however, the spring and damper rates
arrest body movement well, along with the
parameters that allow for high occupant
comfort. You’d expect nothing less
from this Czech Republic manufacturer
which has drawn significant build quality
direction from the Volkswagen group.
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects
the RS offers is the point-to-point ability, it
will lunge out of corner and blast without
lag through the paddle shift system to the

point where speed needs to be chiseled
off, high grade brakes take care of that
and with the grip naturally associated
with four-wheel-drive the RS feels well
attached to the road, it is dynamic and
forceful when asked to respond.
This is all from a car which has a vastly
different role to play as well, it is the
quintessential mid-size seven-seater that
also looks after its occupants in terms of
fitment and specification and safety. At
$73k it needs to be well appointed, and I
can report it leaves little to chance.
It also has fuel economy on its side, Skoda
claims a combined cycle average of
7.7-litres per 100km (36mpg).
It takes a very special car to win the New
Zealand Motoring Writer’s Guild Car of the
Year Award and the Kodiaq took honours
for 2017.
Obviously, that recognition speaks for
itself, the RS adds another ingredient into
the equation, it certainly captured my
attention with its performance, economy
yet practicality all thrown in for good
measure.

Motorcyclists, competitors and
enthusiasts increase Invercargill’s
population by hundreds, if not
thousands, during the Burt Munro
Challenge writes Janette Gellatly.
This year is no different, despite
the weather gods’ best attempts to
deter them with extensive flooding
throughout Southland earlier this week.
Since its inception in 2006, the rally has
grown into one of Australasia’s largest
all-round motorcycle rallies.
Hosted by the Southland Motorcycle
Club, the event opened with the New
Zealand Hill Climb Championships on
Thursday which had more than 70
entries over eight classes from classic to
modern motorcycles, at Bluff Hill.

Nature had been both cruel and kind to

"The Bluff Hill Climb was fantastic," he

"Both the public and riders turned up in
force", which had been in doubt because
of the flooding throughout the province.
"Despite the flooding, delays and
detours, 95% stuck with it and made it
through.’’
The twilight drag racing at Teretonga
Park, near Invercargill, which was
introduced to the challenge two years
ago, also took place on Thursday, and
also went "very well", Underhay said.
Because of tidal conditions, the New
Zealand Beach Racing Championships
along Oreti Beach began at 5.30pm
yesterday with pre-race entertainment
by a World War 2 Russian Yak 3
V-12 engine fighter plane, Full Noise,
performing low-level aerobatics.
With the strong winds and high tide, the
available sand to race on was limited,
causing a "tight course", beach race
organiser Craig Hyde said.

late clubmans class was added to the
beach race this year.

Races and Oreti Park Speedway. The
action-packed Invercargill Street Races
will be held around the Bill Richardson
Dr and Arena Ave business park

Street race organiser Garry Jamieson
said everything was "ready to go".

Classic Japanese
Motorcycle Show
The CJMG was formed in 2007
after two riders on their restored
vintage Japanese motorcycles,
passed each other on the road one
weekend. Both stopped to say hello and
discuss their hobby and passion which
was finding, restoring and riding these
old bikes.
An advertisement was then placed in
a newspaper enquiring after interested
like-minded enthusiasts which was very
successful. The group now has many
members that meet socially and also
ride monthly. There are also a number
of members who regularly go off-road
to places such as Molesworth Station
and other more isolated backcountry
areas. Annual four or five day road
tours are also undertaken. There
are affiliate groups in Auckland and
Dunedin.
The group will be holding their fifth
Classic Japanese Motorcycle Show on
Sunday the 15th of March 2020 at the
Woolston Club Bowling Pavilion. The
motorcycles on show are beautifully
restored and in a lot of cases restored
to "factory new" using decades old
stock parts hunted out and found
around the world by way of the Internet.
These shows are well patronised as the
show is the only one in New Zealand
dedicated solely to vintage Japanese
motorcycles. Entries come from as
far away as Dunedin and visitors even
coming from Auckland. The motorcycles
are grouped under the four marques:
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.
Also grouped are 50-125 cc, Trail and
Barn Find. Trophies are awarded to
all groups and also Best in Show by
popular vote. Visitors will be able to
view such notable and ground breaking
motorcycles of the day such as the
Kawasaki Z1, Kawasaki H1 Mach III and
H2, Honda CB750 right down through to
the smaller models like the T125 Suzuki
Stinger and 50cc AC50 Suzuki Maverick
and Honda Cub.
The organisers and members of the
CJMG receive great feedback from
attendees. Many visitors relating that
they used to own a particular model
or that their brother had one, crashed
one or should never have sold it etc.
And they love to tell their motorcycling
stories to other interested parties.
These old motorbikes are a key for a
lot of people that unlocks a flood of
memories, particularly of their free and
happy younger days and their love of
Japanese motorcycles.
Profits from this show and previous
shows have been donated to charities.
