be to admire the view, snap a photograph, lookaround an Iron Age hill fort or a poke about anabandoned mill, to have a bite to eat or make abrew, or to unfurl a sleeping bag and make a bedfor the night. With a bicycle comes both a freedomand an inconspicuity that is frankly inconceivablein a car. A car is always a blot on the landscape,but a bicycle fits right in. The thrum of bicycletyres and the tick and fizz of a freewheel are justas much a part of life in the lanes as the sound ofthe wind rustling in the tops of the trees.Country lanes are not just a great way offinding peace and solitude, of getting closerto nature and discovering new places, they areportals for time travelling. Some lanes followprehistoric trading routes, Roman military roads,pilgrims’ ways, packhorse trails and old droveroads. Many more in number are the nameless,ageless lanes which for centuries have seennothing but the ordinary, everyday journeys thathave gradually, over many generations, worn aline into the landscape.The roads, tracks and byways of northernEngland offer almost unlimited possibilities; myintention is not to offer a comprehensive inventoryof the lost lanes of the North but to showcasesome of the best and to share my favourite wayof exploring the country. Should the mood takeyou, I hope you will adapt and refine my routesaccording to your own interests and inclinations,and devise your own. As you pedal along, with mapto hand, I hope you’ll discover things that I mayhave missed and that, day by day, you’ll amass yourown treasured collection of lost lanes.Jack Thurston, January 202014
MAPS AND NAVIGATIONMAPS AND ELEVATION PROFILESThe maps in the book are at a scale of just over1:180,000. Therefore 1 cm on the map is about1.8 km on the road and 1 inch on the map isabout 3 miles. On the elevation profiles, 1 cmis about 150 metres of climbing and 1 inch isabout 1,250 feet.LEAVE THE BOOK AT HOMEThis is a heavy book, and the last thing anyonewould want to do is carry it around for a day’scycling. That’s why all the information neededto ride the routes is available on the Lost Laneswebsite. As well as the maps in the book, thereare Ordnance Survey maps, printable routesheets with turn-by-turn directions are availableonline. There are also GPX files for use withGPS navigation devices. The table on page 10provides a website address for each ride wherethese resources can be found.15
