Dating apps allow you to conveniently meet and connect with like-minded people.

Whether you’re newly single or a

dating veteran, the dating scene has

changed drastically in the last decade.

Rare are the days of meeting

a potential partner at a bar or social

function. These days, if you’re serious

about dating, you almost always

need to have an online presence.

It can be difficult to decipher

where to start. There are almost as

many different types of dating apps

as there are types of people. What

better place to begin than by checking

out the apps most other people

are using. According to The Cut, the

top five dating apps of 2019 were

Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, The League

and OKCupid.

Thanks to Tinder, the most common

current format of dating apps is the

swiping format. You view the photos

and profile of potential matches

and swipe left to dismiss or right to

match. If you both swipe right on

each other, you’re matched! Other

apps have created their own take

on this format. Bumble, for instance,

uses swiping, but the women have to

instigate communication, and men

have 24 hours to respond for the

conversation to become active.

Once you’ve decided on the right

app for you, that’s when the fun

begins of creating your profile and

looking for your next partner. For

many, this is a strange new world of

online dating. It can be intimidating

to set up a profile, and it comes with

its own setbacks. Allow your first impression

to show your best self with

these tips.

• Use a variety of photos, not just

all group shots or selfies. There’s

nothing more frustrating than trying

to figure out who “John” is in a series

of photos that seems to include the

same four or five guys. While you

may feel more comfortable surrounded

by your friends, that’s not who I’m

trying to date. I’m here to see your

profile — make sure I can tell who

you are. The same can be said of

selfies. If all of your photos are filtered

shots of your face, it makes me

wonder what’s going on below your

neck. Do you have scales? A tail?

Are you a centaur? Your match is going

to see the whole you in person,

so you might as well show off your

bod from the start. We can all get

self-conscious about our figures, but

be proud of who you are and show

it. The right person is looking for exactly

who you are.

• Sometimes less is more. Don’t

write an essay on your profile. Just

give the basic information. When

they're swiping away, most people

aren’t going to take the time to read

a five paragraph essay on your favorite

movies, books and hobbies.

You want to put enough information

to grab someone’s attention, but

leave the rest to the imagination.

After all, getting to know each other

more in depth is what first dates

are for.

• Be clear about what you’re looking

for. Want a relationship? Want

a casual encounter? Want to date

around and see what’s out there?

Cool! There are tons of people out

there looking for the same thing you

are, no matter what it is. Just like in

any relationship, communication is

key in the dating world. Be clear and

upfront about what you’re looking

for. Don’t waste your time or theirs.

A third date isn’t the time to find out

your match is looking for a casual

hangout while you’re looking for a

life partner.

• Be open. Dating is hard and

weird and often puts you outside

your comfort zone. The best part

about online dating is that it opens

you up to a whole world of opportunities.

You’ll encounter people you

would have never met in person,

many of whom have much different

life experiences than you. Don’t turn

someone down just because they

aren’t your usual type — be that in

looks or lifestyle. You never know

who you’re going to click with on a

much deeper level. Another great

thing about online dating — you can

easily find out if you’re compatible

with someone by quickly chatting

with them before making any plans.

According to dating expert Holly

Barter of matchsmith.com, you

can chat with someone for up to a

week and a half without scheduling

a meetup before raising any flags.

Anything after that, though, means

the match lacks momentum and

probably isn’t going anywhere.

• Avoid generic conversational

openers. So, your profile is complete,

and you’ve caught the eye of

a potential partner. It’s time to initiate

a conversation. What do you say?

Stay away from openers that don’t

hold any meaning, like “hey” or

“how are you?” Those are difficult to

respond to and make it seem like you

just finished sending 20 other “hey”

messages to other people. You want

to stand out from the crowd. One of

the best ways to do that, I’ve found,

is to comment on or ask a question

about a photo or statement that was

in their profile. This shows that you

actually read their profile and didn’t

just look at one photo and swipe

right. Most importantly, be yourself.

If you’re witty, sarcastic, intelligent or

goofy, make sure that comes across

in your tone and message. You’re

looking for someone who is a good

fit for you, so it’s important to always

be yourself.

No matter how the online dating

world works out for you, it’s a brave

thing to put yourself out there and

look for a partner. I wish you the

best of luck and hope you find exactly

who you’re looking for. Happy

swiping! ª

Undue Influence

by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney

My sisters and I are worried

about our elder father’s health and

the undue influence that our youngest

sister has over him. We believe that

our father has dementia and shouldn’t

be making decisions for himself or

signing documents. Our sister lives with our father and has persuaded him to

sign estate documents transferring control of our father’s assets and health care

to our sister. At what stage of dementia is it deemed undue influence over a

person who lacks adequate ability to make decisions and sign documents?

Capacity is the freedom to make self-determining decisions. Everyone, to

some degree, experiences memory loss as they age, such as forgetting a specific

word, pausing to remember directions to their favorite restaurant, losing interest

in certain social activities and appearing to behave inappropriately around others.

While these symptoms may represent early signs of dementia, it doesn’t mean a

person has become incompetent and unable to make his/her own decisions.

There are many types of dementia with varying symptoms that may indicate

inability to make decisions. Early stages of dementia may result from poor blood

flow known as Vascular dementia. Parkinson’s is thought of as a disease that

only involves movement but for many people, Parkinson’s may cause slowness

in thinking, loss of memory, decreased attention span and difficulty finding

words. Alzheimer’s causes a progressive mental deterioration in middle or old

age. One in nine adults in America experiences some level of Alzheimer’s that is

the dementia most commonly associated with senility and degeneration of the

brain. Just because someone may be experiencing symptoms of dementia

doesn’t mean they are incapable of making decisions or signing documents.

Dementia has stages. For example, Alzheimer’s is considered to have 7

stages, but the afflicted person may never reach stage 6 or 7 before death. At

these stages, a physician may detect clear cognitive problems during a patient

visit and recommend another person should make decisions for the patient.

Until a doctor determines otherwise, the patient is considered competent,

capable of making his/her own decisions and able to sign documents such

as trusts, wills, durable powers, health care proxies or other life documents.

If you have a loved one exhibiting early signs of dementia, don’t be in a

hurry to assume he or she is incompetent. The process of having someone

declared incompetent by doctors and courts can become combative,

expensive, and emotionally impacting upon families. Remember, you too will

be a senior citizen one day.

If a child perceives his/her parent is favoring other children, especially

when inheritances are involved, it is common for sibling rivalry to ignite

jealousy, hatred and greed. Not receiving what you deem to be your fair

share of the family fortune, without independent proof of incapacity, is not

sufficient justification for presuming your parent is incompetent.

Families are encouraged to meet with a neutral person, such as an elder

law attorney, to discuss safe decisions about

aging parents and to avoid family warfare.

n Stuart Eldridge passes away

At the age of 59, Edgewood

Children’s Ranch Executive

Director Stuart Eldridge died of a

heart attack. The organization had

this message about his passing:

“It is with great sadness that we

share the passing of our beloved

executive director, Stuart Eldridge.

For over 37 years, every single day,

Stuart lived out his dream of helping

our ranchers heal and find the

love of Christ through Edgewood

Children’s Ranch. Stuart impacted

many with love, care and support as

well as with his efforts for them to experience

God’s love in this haven of

hope. His work will continue, but we

pause to honor him and his legacy.

The ranchers, staff, board of directors

and countless others extend condolences

to his family and friends.

No doubt, Stuart has already heard,

‘Well done, good and faithful

servant.’”

A memorial service was held at

Westwood Church. The family

has asked that, in lieu of flowers,

donations be offered to Edgewood

Children’s Ranch at 1451 Edgewood

Ranch Road, Orlando, FL 32835.

For more information about making

a donation, call 407-578-0506.

n Protect your health

with a flu vaccine

Officials of the Florida Department

of Health are strongly encouraging

all unvaccinated residents to get

a flu shot as soon as possible. Flu

vaccination is the best way to prevent

the flu and its potentially serious

complications. Officials of the

Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention estimate that, nationwide,

for the 2019-20 season so far, there

have been at least 19 million cases

of influenza, more than 180,000

associated hospitalizations, and approximately

10,000-25,000 related

deaths.

It takes approximately two weeks

after vaccination for your body to develop

protection against the flu. CDC

officials recommend getting a flu

vaccine annually, because flu viruses

evolve quickly, and last year’s vaccine

may not protect against the current

year’s strain. Even if the vaccine

does not fully protect against the flu, it

may reduce the severity of symptoms

and the risk of complications.

To find out where to get a flu vaccination,

visit vaccinefinder.org. For more

information, visit flufreeflorida.com.

Winter Garden, partnered with

Oakland Nature Preserve to

the public and restoring the Lake

Apopka basin. The brewery will

“Oakland Nature Preserve Beer”

purchased back to the preserve. The

brew, an amber lager, is made with

blackberry, vanilla and cinnamon.

ONP is a 128-acre preserve that

offers environmental education and

ecotourism activities for visitors of

all ages. Its mission is to promote an

understanding of the fragile balance

between mankind and the environment

by educating visitors about Lake

Apopka’s basin ecosystems and cultural

history, and by restoring and conserving

the lands within the preserve.

n Orange County’s app

through Alexa

Orange County Government in

Florida now offers an “Ask Orange

County Government” app/skill

through Amazon’s Alexa, a virtual

assistant capable of voice interaction.

The app/skill is an extension of

the county’s 311 service that helps

residents connect with local governmental

services. Orange County is

the first county in Florida to incorporate

the Alexa virtual assistant.

County officials chose the

Amazon Alexa platform due to its

increasing popularity and market

share, with more than 100 million

devices on the market. Residents

can ask Alexa thousands of questions

and get informative responses,

and the county plans to continue

to add more knowledge to the virtual

assistant as time goes by. Set

up the "Ask Orange County" skill

by stating to Alexa, "Alexa, enable

the Orange County Government

As the business world continues to

evolve, more and more people are

embarking on their own “work from

home” business ventures. As exciting

as it may seem to be your own boss,

running your own business from

home comes with some major disadvantages.

These include buying and

installing expensive equipment, as

well as trying to find a distractionfree

work area in your home or not

having a suitable space to conduct

meetings. Another major downside

is having to use your personal address

on business cards and mailings,

which could have a negative

impact on your sense of security and

privacy.

BIZCENTER USA offers solutions

to all these problems and more. The

company provides high-end, yet affordable,

options for those looking

for executive suites to conduct business

or those wishing to work in a

virtual environment.

BIZCENTER USA was started

by Fernando Mariano, a longtime

Southwest Orlando resident

and business owner. For nearly 30

years, Fernando has successfully

run Multimedia Inc., an international

advertising agency and the parent

company to BIZCENTER USA. Two

years ago, Fernando noticed the

increasing demand for a high-end

coworking facility that catered to

www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x February 20 - March 4, 2020 x 11

BIZCENTER USA

Offering Premium Executive Suites and Virtual Offices

all business needs. He studied the

industry and the market extensively.

“Our virtual offices were designed

with home office workers in mind,”

Fernando said. “BIZCENTER USA

offers our members the ability to receive

mail and packages at the facility.

They can even use our address

on their business cards. If they need

to hold a meeting, they can use either

of our two large conference rooms.”

BIZCENTER USA also offers halfand

full-day rates on its suites and

conference rooms, which is ideal for

at-home workers who may need a

quiet place to work temporarily.

The company is centrally located

in MetroWest, in a beautiful area

overlooking a tree-lined street. The

nearly 4,000-square-foot facility offers

ample parking and features 23

spacious executive suites catered to

one to three people and two hightech

conference rooms. The walls and

ceilings are soundproof to ensure privacy.

The stunning lobby is very welcoming

to both members and guests

with a front desk equipped with anything

a client could possibly need,

including an on-site notary.

The technological offerings are

most impressive. There are internet

connections from two different providers.

If one connection stops, the

other takes over to ensure clients will

never be without internet.

“Many of our competitors offer

wireless internet to avoid costly

cabling installation,” Fernando said.

“However, when multiple people are

using the wi-fi, there is a speed reduction.

Each of our suites has three

wired cables — one for internet, one

for phone and one extra. This allows

for continuous high-speed internet.”

The facility is available 24/7, with

staff hours Monday through Friday

from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fernando said it is important for

the facility to be available to members

at all hours of the day, because

“sometimes people need to or

choose to work outside of the typical

nine to five hours. We don’t want to

limit our clients.”

Security at BIZCENTER USA is also

top-notch. Instead of keys, everything

is done electronically.

“Our software system applies a

specific code for each member for

the duration of his or her contract,”

Fernando said. “As soon as you close

the door, it’s already locked. It also

tracks who has come in and gone out.

Other facilities use keys, which can be

copied, hence they are not very safe.

Our members can rest assured that

their safety and comfort are just as important

to us as their business needs.”

BIZCENTER USA is located in Suite 200 at 6000

MetroWest Blvd. in Orlando. For more information

about how BIZCENTER USA can benefit you and

your company, visit bizcenterusa.com. ª

components that keep your skin tight

and firm. One of these components,

elastin, is composed of cross-linked

fibers that form a durable, resilient

web. This elastin web helps keep facial

skin flexible but tight. For example,

elastin allows the skin to bounce

back to its normal shape after it

stretches to accommodate normal

activities, like talking.

As skin ages, the natural crosslinking

of elastin fibers is reduced. At

night, while you sleep, the skin works

to repair and restore its structural

components and actually “opens up”

to allow creams and serums to absorb

more readily. You can get the

most bang for your buck by applying

products with powerful anti-aging ingredients

before bed.

To help your skin restore itself at

night, adopt a nighttime skin care

routine that includes an exfoliating

cleanser, a serum and a moisturizing

cream created for evening use. The

best nighttime serums contain beneficial

and robust ingredients. For

example, DDF Restoring Night Serum

(www.ddfskincare.com) contains an

exclusive turmeric complex that

strengthens the moisture barrier and

drenches the skin with essential hydration

to support the natural cross-linking

of elastin, helping to repair the look of

deep wrinkles for visible results in just

two weeks. Women who have used

this serum have seen noticeable improvements.

After four weeks of use,

the skin’s surface structure doubled

in strength, significantly minimizing

4 Reasons to Drink More H2O

We all know water is good for us

and that we should probably drink

more of it. So why, then, do Americans

find it so difficult to sip from what is

arguably the fountain of youth?

Answers vary, but the fact is, 1 in

10 Americans drinks zero cups of

water per day, according to a study

by Dr. Alyson Goodman, a medical

epidemiologist for the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention.

Zero. She suspects that those who

don’t drink any water (or very little)

are getting it from other sources,

such as food and coffee, but warns

this may not be enough.

“Many health risks decrease when

you drink plain water,” Goodman said.

Which is why, she says, the results

are “mind-boggling.”

Robert Eakle, CEO of Alkame

Water, agreed.

“Without water, no living thing can

survive,” he said. “It affects every

area of our life and is an essential

part to maintaining proper health.”

However, not all waters are created

equal. Enhanced waters, like

Alkame Water, provide the body

with more health benefits than regular

water. Just take a look at how it

can help:

• It balances body fluids. Your

body is composed of about 60%

water and performs vital functions

such as protecting your organs and

tissues, regulating your body temperature

and carrying nutrients and

oxygen to your cells — essentially it

keeps your body running like a welloiled

machine.

• It keeps skin looking healthy.

Water moisturizes your skin and

functions as a protective barrier to

prevent excess fluid loss (think free

anti-aging cream). In addition, it can

keep your skin fresh and smooth.

• It boosts the immune system.

Those who guzzle water are at a

lower risk of getting sick. This crystalclear

concoction helps fight against

www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x February 20 - March 4, 2020 x 13

flu, cancer and other ailments — especially

if your water has mild alkaline

properties. Including ionized

water in your daily intake can give

your immune system a boost through

added antioxidants; improve aerobic

capacity; enhance energy levels;

and, through a patented technology

that alters the molecular structure of

water, hydrate your body more fully.

Industry Experts

• It can help control calories.

While drinking water may not be a

weight-loss strategy, per se, substituting

it for higher-calorie or sugar-filled

beverages can help by removing byproducts

of fat, filling you up so you’re

not noshing. It acts as a natural appetite

suppressant and raises your

metabolism.
