HELLO AND welcome to the
first Selwyn police column.
This will be a monthly
column where we discuss relevant
topics and crime trends
within the district.
Over the last few weeks, we
have had an increase in rural
burglaries throughout the district.
Most offending is taking
place during daylight hours.
Crime prevention in rural
areas is most effective when
it involves a partnership
between rural people, police,
local authorities and local
organisations. If you are going
to be away from your property
for a length of time advise
your neighbours and also your
local police who can pass this
on to community patrols if
applicable.
Recently a number of
offenders who have been apprehended
are travelling from
outside of the district to commit
these crimes. They have
been targeting properties that
are insecure or have property

Important security measures
include:
• While away from your
property or at night you
should lock all rural buildings,
houses and sheds etc.
• You should have a detailed
inventory of all personal
valuables and household and
business equipment, including
model and serial numbers,
inscriptions, and other identifying
features.
• Reduce risk by taking
notice of who is out and
about and talking to them
(particularly if they aren’t
locals), locking your house,
removing keys, closing gates
(particularly to your driveway/
house), and keeping an eye on
each other’s property.
Offenders will use a range of
techniques but most offending
is opportunistic.
Report all instances of crime
– even when a police response
is not necessary.
Police need to know the
pattern of crime in an area.
You can help police by reporting
all instances of suspicious
behaviour or crime. It helps
police to know who is in the
community or if there is a
pattern of crime developing
in an area that needs further
investigation. It also helps
us to decide if the rest of the
community should be alerted
too.
By reporting these crimes
it also gives the police the opportunity
to fingerprint and
also look for any other forensic
evidence. This enables us to
hold the offenders to account.
Reporting crime can be
done in a number of ways.
• Phone 111 when you need
immediate help with a lifethreatening
or time – critical
emergency
• By phoning 105 – when no
one is injured or in danger,
there is no serious risk to people
or property, the crime isn’t
still happening.
• By reporting online at 105.
