Hello & welcome!
Welcome to the Spring issue of Beaconsfield
Together. It’s jam packed with local community
news, business advice and news: I am championing
bringing ‘communities together’ with news from our
neighbouring towns, Gerrards Cross, Amersham
and The Chalfonts. We can learn so much from
each other and grow together as a community!
Read the latest developments on our Green Belt
from Beaconsfield Society (p28), how plastic-free
is Beaconsfield? (p61). The centre pages feature a
VE special with events organised by Beaconsfield
Town Council and other activities over May Bank
Holiday and Easter (p52). We give you ideas on
how to treat your mum on Mothering Sunday with a
special luxury tea at Stoke Park Club (p46 & 47), or
what about a simple recipe for children to treat their
mums to breakfast in bed from Waitrose? (p24)
If you’d like to join in a family run you can now
register for The Gerrards Cross Charity Fun Run held
on Sunday 17th May (p16) and the Running Sisters
are starting a beginner’s 5km run in April. (p20). Lots
of news on health, legal, financial,
fashion and much much more!
Share your news and events with me before the
copy deadline of 6th April for the next issue.
Keep safe!
A big shout-out to
The Beaconsfield
Society’s blooming
success
As part of the Beaconsfield Society’s efforts
in greening our streets over the last couple
of years, a campaign to plant blossom trees
was started.
The latest batch of 14 was ordered by residents
and planted in January. This means we now have a
grand total of 97 new cherry blossom trees planted in
Beaconsfield so far, either in people’s front gardens or
in roadside verges, which is great for our environment
and improving the look of our town. The reason for
choosing cherry blossom trees is that this links with the
town’s history of cherry orchards to supply the London
markets in years gone by.
‘Thank you to everyone who has got involved so far.’
says Jeannette Buckle, who chairs The Beaconsfield
Society’s Environment Group. The Society would like
to plant more trees to take them over 100, so please
let us know of any public place near you in the town -
however small, that you think would benefit by a few
more trees, and the Society will try to make it happen.
Sunset Boulevard cherry blossom is a narrow,
conical, medium-sized, deciduous tree. It is upright,
with coppery young foliage, orange-red autumn
colour and flowers that blush white in mid-Spring. Did
you know that these trees are also a precious wildlife
habitat, providing nectar for bees and early pollinators?
Audley Chalfont Dene
Phase III construction well underway
Audley Chalfont Dene, the luxury retirement
village based in Chalfont St Peter, officially
broke ground on the third phase of properties
at a recent VIP reception attended by Rt
Hon Dame Cheryl Gillan MP for Chesham
and Amersham, owners and people from the
local community.
The ground breaking event marked the third phase
in Audley’s continued efforts to meet the growing
demand for high quality, innovative retirement
living options.
Taking inspiration from the Chilterns, the properties
in this final phase of Audley Chalfont Dene are
named after prominent figures of local history and
the beautiful landmarks which surround Audley
Chalfont Dene. Greene Cottages pays homage
to the famous local novelist, St Peter’s Grange
in dedication to the church in the local village
and Misbourne Place named after the beautiful
River Misbourne.
The latest phase of Audley
Chalfont Dene will be home to
58 luxury properties to add to
84 already situated within the
village. Owners and members
of the local community will have
access to the Audley Club,
situated in Chalfont House,
where they can enjoy the luxury facilities including
a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, gym and spa and
Audley Care.
Nick Sanderson, CEO Audley Group, said: “We are
thrilled to be celebrating the breaking of ground
on Audley Chalfont Dene’s new phase with both
current and new owners, and members of the local
community. This is a very proud moment not just for
the village but for Audley Villages as a whole.
“We will now be looking ahead to the next few
months, when we will begin selling properties in the
new development. There has already been incredible
demand for properties at Audley Chalfont Dene,
demonstrating the continued need for innovative and
high-quality retirement living options.”
Cheryl Gillan, MP for Chesham and Amersham,
said: “It was an honour to attend the official phase
III celebration at Audley Chalfont Dene. Seeing the
local community come together to celebrate the
launch of the new phase of development is wonderful.
“It’s been fantastic to see how Audley has become
a central part of the local community, not only
providing care to those who need it, but also
welcoming people from all around to visit the
village, dine at the restaurant and attend the
events that regularly take place.”
SCHOOL NEWS
Model United
Nations Success
at Dr Challoner’s
Grammar School
The Model United Nations movement is
now nearly 100 years old and is designed to
teach students the vital skills of diplomacy,
international relations and about the United
Nations.
Participants develop their speaking, debating and
writing skills in addition to their critical thinking,
teamwork and leadership abilities. From the first
International Assemblies held at Oxford University
in 1921, the movement has spread globally.
DCGS students first became involved in 2018
with an inaugural conference held at DCGS.
Since then students have attended conferences
in St Petersburg as well as winning awards at the
London International MUN.
Volunteering + fresh air
= an awesome feelgood
factor!
Every Wednesday afternoon, a small but
dedicated group of Beaconsfield High sixth
formers volunteer with the Chiltern Rangers,
an organisation that works with communities
to provide practical habitat management in
Bucks and the wider Chilterns.
Currently the students spend
their afternoons working on an
environmental improvement
project on Kingsmead in
High Wycombe.
In December, these students
were interviewed alongside
one of the Chiltern Rangers for
an episode of BBC Radio 4’s
Open Country, which aired on
January 16. Chiltern Ranger
Leila, spoke about conservation
being the second least diverse
career in the UK and Becky
Most recently, 12 budding US Senators set off
from DCGS, embarking on a unique opportunity to
simulate the US Senate at Wycombe Abbey School.
Following intensive research, the Year 13 students took
on the role of their delegated Senator (8 Republicans
and 4 Democrats) where they would proceed to
debate, argue, lobby, filibuster, vote and table bills
over the course of an action-packed three days.
The bills debated were wide-ranging, covering
abortion, gun control, drilling in the Arctic, the
construction of President Trump’s wall and the
President’s ability to declare war or place tariffs
on trade. The Challoner’s team performed well,
winning a number of awards for commitment and
contribution, whilst the team won the award for best
school. This was a fantastic achievement especially
given many of those taking part had never before
attended a MUN conference. We look forward to
following their progress in the future.
High students Aliya and Alisha, talked about what they
get out of the volunteering sessions and the benefits of
doing something outside of their normal studies.
In January, the partnership between the school and
the conservation group allowed the Rangers to lead a
working party of students who wanted to return their
school pond back to its former glory, but in a manner
that was sympathetic to the pond ecosystem. After
a second visit, the pond is barely recognisable and
both staff and students are eagerly looking forward
to seeing what wildlife will make the pond it’s home
this spring!! For more information about Beaconsfield
Swim in style with your own pool
Designing and building a
swimming pool and pool
house is unlike any other
building project, the process
consists of three major areas
that require specialist design.
Origin tradition
The barn style exudes a timeless elegance
helping to blend into any rural setting.
The heritage exterior colours complete
the design and aesthetic appeal whilst the
internal décor can reflect a leisure use or be
modelled to produce finishes which could
easily be comfortable within your home.
Origin style
A successful project requires all
specialist areas to be integrated into
a consolidated design from the start.
Origin pride themselves in their
ability to do it all by managing the
entire installation process from initial
design to completion, leaving
customers secure in the knowledge
that our experts will be working
together from the start.
This project encapsulates modernity at
its best with clean sharp angular lines and
large glazed panels in place to produce
a minimalistic effect. The contemporary
internal finish adds a stylish essence to a
family functioning pool.
Origin redesigned
Everything about this project is unique,
from exterior shape to the application
of the cedar-wood planks used vertically
instead of horizontally. The interior boasts a
kitchen area, changing room and bathroom
facility as well as a stunning pool and
contemporary sliding doors that allow a
virtual transparency to take account of the
surrounding countryside.

GX Fun Run - registration open!
The 2020 GX Fun Run is fast approaching
and the committee would like to take this
opportunity to extend a big thank you
to all sponsors who give their services,
time and effort to ensure this hugely
important community event can happen.
Many organisations and local businesses have
supported the fun run for several years and others
are providing their support this year for the first
time. All contributions are greatly appreciated!
The committee however would like to give a
special mention to this year’s gold sponsors
without whose significant support, the event
would not be possible. They are: Aztec Group
(UK), BP Collins LLP, Bull Hotel, Clancy Plant
Hire, Eden Care, Fit House, Frost Partnership,
Gayhurst School, Gerrards Cross Golf Club,
Howdens, Kidd Rapinet LLP, Nicholas Moss Estate
Agents, Nunn Haywood, Austenwood Nursing
Home (Salveocare), Stoke Park Country Club,
Swarthmore Residential Care Home, Tesco Bags
of Help, Thames Valley Hire Services Ltd,
The Langley Hotel, Thorpe House School and
the Wheelhouse Vet Centre. A huge thank you
also goes to local professional photographer
David Moore who, as in previous years, will
capture the fun and frolics of the day on film
to provide a lasting memory for all.
After event images will be available
from David Moore Photography
www.davidmoorephotography.co.uk
Since 2001 the Fun Run has brought individuals,
families, friends and local businesses together,
raising much needed funds for charities that are
at the very heart of the community. This year’s
charities are: Hearing Dogs for Deaf People,
Liberty’s Legacy and William’s Fund.
The Fun Run provides the perfect excuse for a
family day out with something for everyone and
an opportunity to catch up with old friends and
make a few new ones.
Registration for the 5km race is now open so book
your place now. Only 1500 spaces are available
and in 2018 we filled all slots in record time!
There is no better time for you to don your
running shoes in preparation or if you’re not
the running kind, join in the fun anyway and
come along to East Common for an early summer
celebration on 17th May.
More information about the event can be found
HEALTH NEWS
Nutritional advice
on being vegan
Veganism is becoming increasingly
popular and many people are choosing a
vegan diet for moral and ethical reasons,
but what are the implications for health?
While some may feel that they thrive following
a vegan diet, it might not suit everybody and
there are several essential nutrients that are more
difficult to obtain. Therefore, if you are considering
becoming vegan, it is important to carefully plan
and look for alternative sources of those nutrients
– particularly vitamin B12, omega 3 fatty acids,
iron and vitamin D.
Vitamin B12 is required for optimal brain function
and red blood cell production. It is found in
animal products and is therefore the most
common deficiency found in a vegan diet. It is
possible to obtain some vitamin B12 from fortified
foods – for example plant-based milks or cereals,
but many vegans will need to take supplements.
The quality and dosage of supplements can vary
greatly so it is always best to seek advice from a
professional first.
Omega 3 fatty acids are important for skin,
bone, joint and heart health, as well as helping
to balance blood glucose levels, reduce
inflammation and have even been linked to
mental health. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel
and anchovies are an excellent source but chia,
hemp and flax seeds are a good vegan source of
omega 3 and are a great addition to smoothies,
porridge or salads.
Iron is integral for metabolism, red blood cell
health and delivering oxygen to cells. There
are two forms – haem iron from animals, and
non-haem iron from plants. Unfortunately
non-haem iron is less well-absorbed by the body
but absorption can be increased by combining it
with vitamin C. A lot of plants high in iron already
contain vitamin C, but squeezing some lemon
over your vegetables can help. Lentils, beans,
tofu and quinoa are good vegan sources of iron.
Vitamin D is used in immune support, calcium
absorption into the bones, regulating blood
pressure and facilitating gene expression. It can
be made from cholesterol when skin is exposed
to sunlight, but primary dietary sources are meat,
fish and eggs, as well as fortified plant milks
and cereals. Since we get little sunlight in winter
in the UK, the government advises everyone
supplement vitamin D between October and
March. To ensure you are getting the correct
dosage it is best to get your vitamin D levels
tested.
The History of
Running Sisters
The Chiltern Running Sisters commenced in
the late 1980s in Slough when a lady named
Rosemary Arber answered an advert in a
running magazine asking for experienced
runners to get together with beginners to
form local running groups for women keen
to run, but not wanting to join competitive
running clubs.
The response to her Beginners Course was so
popular that she formed other groups in the area,
including Beaconsfield. Jane Perry, who has been
a member for 26 years, is the present Group
Leader. Jane had done a bit of running but was
not keen to run on her own, particularly on dark
winter evenings, and thought it an ideal way of
running safely, whilst making friends. The group
meet at The Reading Rooms in Beaconsfield Old
Town on a Thursday evening at 7.00 pm. They are
a well-known sight, running through the streets
of Beaconsfield and are particularly noticeable in
April, when Jane runs a Beginners Course,
with sometimes 50 ladies running together!
The next beginners’ course is on Thursday April
9th at 7.00 pm. Cost of the course is £20, which
includes a medal, after completing a Fun Run
at the end of the course.
Anyone for Cricket?
New players welcome at Beaconsfield CC
A beautifully manicured green lung at the heart of
the community, Beaconsfield Cricket Club has been
welcoming local cricketers for almost 200 years.
20
The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and welcoming,
with over 450 male and female players of all ages
and abilities training and playing throughout
the summer months. Where better to kick back,
relax with the family and enjoy the fabulous
Buckinghamshire summer?
A not-for-profit organisation, BCC is led by a sterling
team of volunteers whose hard work and dedication
has enabled the club to grow substantially in recent
years. With over 100 women and girls now training
regularly, it also boasts one of the largest female
memberships in grassroots cricket.
2019 was a particularly successful year for the men’s
section of the club, with all three teams earning
promotion from their respective divisions in the
Thames Valley League. This year will see the
addition of a fourth team, as well as building on last
year’s newly established Academy side, designed
to introduce older colts to the adult league.
The women will, once again, be competing in the
Four Counties 20 Over league, but only after their
annual warm up in La Manga, Spain, at the start of
the season!
With the 2020 season only weeks away, the club
are inviting potential new players to get in touch
for more details and to arrange a visit. From total
beginners to more experienced players, from 6 to
60+, all are welcome.
Music is in the air!
Spring time approaches and once again
Amersham Festival of Music has a wonderful
programme of concerts and events to enjoy.
Now in its 38th year the festival is a firm
favourite with audiences.
Founded by Iain Ledingham in 1983 Iain
remains the festival’s Musical Director. Iain’s
aim in starting the Festival was to promote
music-making of the highest professional
quality in the local area, using some of the very
attractive local venues. From the outset it was
warmly supported by local music lovers and a
number of generous sponsors. There is also a
Winter season of concerts performed by the
festival’s own professional orchestra.There’s no
need to go into London to hear professional
musicians: you can hear them right here in Bucks!
Today the annual festival spans a period of
three or more weeks and features opera, jazz,
choral music, chamber music, wine tasting and
song. This year’s highlight will be a fully staged
performance of Mozart’s opera Cosi Fan Tutte.
Left to right: Jamien Alexander, Sophie Terry Saffron Doyle (Head Girl),
Josh Evans (Head Boy)
Sung in Italian, the performance will have English
subtitles. If you’ve never been to an opera why
not give it a try? If jazz is more your style don’t
miss the internationally famous jazz singer Clare
Teal and her Trio. Other events include Italian
wine tasting with Italian Song, Mendelssohn’s
choral favourite ‘Elijah’, a dinner concert at
Chenies Manor and Amersham Concert Brass.
The Festival committee are always keen to
encourage and promote music for young people.
The talented members of the Royal Grammar
Learn to play
the piano
The likelihood of leaving the house for
anything other than essentials, like
work, decreases significantly when the
temperature outside drops and staying
indoors suits most of us.
When the weather is less-than-ideal, it’s easy for
our productivity and general satisfaction with life to
come to a screeching halt as we make camp on the
sofa with blankets, junk food and a long, long list of
Netflix watches. After a few weekends spent this
way, I’m sure, like us, you’re ready for a challenge!
Taking up the piano is a great hobby to start. It can
be started straightaway and does not require the will
to get out into the freezing cold. If you are thinking
about taking up this hobby, a visit to the piano
specialist at Countrywide Pianos is a “must”.
As a starting point, begin looking at brand names
that are familiar, such as Kawai or Yamaha. These
companies produce proven reliable pianos which
are well respected among professionals: assurance
indeed, that the quality brands have stood the test
of time. At the heart of these makes is an
unwavering commitment to piano production,
using cutting edge technology and craftsmanship.
We stock Kawai upright and grand pianos, which
include a whole range of models to suit all tastes
and prices ranges. We also pride ourselves on
being an independent Yamaha Piano Centre and
offer both new and second hand Yamaha pianos
including, but not limited to, the popular Yamaha
U1 and Yamaha U3, together with other models in
the series of upright pianos, which are all displayed
in our piano showroom.
SECOND HAND PIANOS:
The ultimate in buying green!
Second hand pianos are a great choice for many
reasons, not least because it is the ultimate in
re-cycling.
We are often asked which is the best piano to buy,
whether you should buy a new piano or is a second
hand used piano better, maybe even digital? For
this, there is no single answer except it should be
your choice.
Visit our showroom at 194 Penn Road, Hazlemere
High Wycombe and let us help you have fun
choosing your piano.
Do you need an
occupational lens?
Helen Gilbert FBDO
Do you find yourself moving your head or
wiggling your glasses to see things on the
desk? So much of what we do these days
is dependent on a distance greater than our
normal reading distance, such as cooking,
painting, DIY and using a desktop PC. Too
often we try to manage or make do with a
reading pair.
Compared to 10 years ago, today’s world is so
much more visually demanding: from mobile
phones to tablets, laptops and PCs the range of
distance we need to see detail is increasing. I
often hear ‘But I don’t want varifocals ‘ or ‘I’ve
tried varifocals, unsuccessfully.‘ Varifocals aren’t
always the best option when you require a wide
and extended distance for close vision but don’t
require glasses for distance vision.
This is where an occupational lens is the answer. It
is essentially a reading lens that gives you a further
range of vision for close work. They are often also
called enhanced readers.
If you do lots of hours in front of a computer these
lenses can stop you sitting awkwardly and reduce
the neck ache that often results from trying to use
varifocals or just reading glasses. The bottom part of
the lens gives you great vision for reading small print
and the top of the lens gives you an increased range
that allows you to see a PC or another person across
the desk or table. It’s not as complex as a varifocal,
which makes it great value and there is no line like a
bifocal. They are great for lots of hobbies where you
need to see a few feet away but also detail up close.
So if you find yourself fidgeting or getting frustrated
with your glasses and feel like your eyes aren’t working
as well with your current glasses, tell your optician.
These lenses could well be the solution.
Local Plan – latest
news from The
Beaconsfield Society
Planning Inspectors have announced that Stage
1 of the Local Plan hearings will take place
17th - 25th March at the Crowne Plaza Hotel,
Gerrards Cross (Stage 2 in May or June).
Our QC and Planning Consultants will be
there, putting our case against the devastating
Local Plan which would see Beaconsfield’s
population grow by c 4,800 people in a few
years and expand the town by one third – an
unsustainable amount of development. Plans
include offices/warehousing and a travellers’
site. All of this would be built on green belt.
The public can attend the hearings to watch
the proceedings; details are on our web-site.
Recently, The Society held another highly
popular Public Meeting to tell everyone about
the Local Plan and what we are doing to
fight it. You can sign up for e-mail up-dates at
thebecsoc@gmail.com and please support our
campaign by donating to our campaign fund at
the Leaders of SBDC, CDC and BCC. The
letter explained there have been fundamental
changes in circumstances during the long
gestation of this Plan, including the advent
of the new Unitary Authority and the Climate
Emergency. The letter called for the Plan to be
withdrawn but the Leaders of SBDC and CDC
refused to do so. The Society is very grateful
to the CPRE for initiating this and to our
co-signatories, including Cllrs. Alastair Pike,
Anita Cranmer and Jackson Ng; this letter is a
strong indictment of the devastating Plan which
would destroy so much of or district. Our MP
Joy Morrissey has endorsed our campaign,
saying “I welcome this initiative and fully
support it. We must protect our green belt
for future generations.”
The Plan breaches government policy
through its’ adverse environmental impacts
which according to the District Councils’ own
“Sustainability Appraisal” include: reduction in
air quality; loss of carbon sinks; urban sprawl
and joining up of towns and villages; harm to
biodiversity; damage to Burnham Beeches
Special Area of Conservation (which has
special international environmental protection);
increase in the carbon footprint of the area;
destruction of important landscape and
heritage sites; reduction in water quality;
stress on water resources and pressure on
eco-systems. The Plan would simply be
devastating.
Last month, an initiative by the Campaign to
others co-sign a joint letter which was sent to
Help save the planet
and plant a tree
In light of the current climate emergency
planting trees is very much on the agenda,
and the best time to do so is summed up in
this Chinese proverb:
When is the best time to plant a tree?
20 years ago. When is the next best time
to plant a tree? Today!
30
And right now is a great time, before the buds
start to grow.
What do you need to consider?
• Does the species of tree suit your garden?
How large will it grow in 10 years, in 25 years?
How close will the roots be to buildings? Is it
going to be shaded out by other plants or trees?
• Select a tree that already has the form you’re
looking for rather than needing to prune it when
you get it home.
• Put the tub/roots in a bucket of water for 30
minutes before planting.
• Use a low angled stake with a rubber tie to
support the tree. A long vertical stake is not
ideal as over-protects the tree.
• Use a mulch of bark or stone chippings
(or similar) to keep the roots moist and keep
weeds at bay.
• In the first summer water daily.
The powers of
powers of attorney
Most people know of and understand what a Will
is. Chances are you’ve got one. If you haven’t,
then at least you know that you should have one.
Fewer people know of or understand Lasting Powers
of Attorney and yet they are just as important, if not
potentially more so, than Wills.
Wills deal with distribution of your assets on your
death but what if something happens to incapacitate
you during your lifetime, whether temporarily or
permanently, such that you cannot deal with your own
affairs or assets? Many people do not appreciate that
if they no longer have legal mental capacity there
is no automatic entitlement for a loved one (even a
spouse or child) to help make important decisions for
them or deal with their finances.
The Court of Protection has to step in to appoint a
Deputy and that is an expensive, lengthy process with
ongoing annual fees.
Anyone, at any time, can become incapable to legally
manage their own affairs, sometimes temporarily,
sometimes permanently, often unexpectedly. There
are two common misconceptions:
• that Lasting Powers of Attorney are only something
to consider at the post-retirement or later-life stage
• to associate loss of mental capacity solely with an
illness such as Alzheimer’s when in reality it could arise
at any time either through other illnesses or as the
result of an accident, such as a car or sporting accident.
Lasting Powers of Attorney allow you to ensure that
if you become mentally incapable your affairs and
assets can be managed on your behalf by people you
have chosen and appointed yourself. Think of it as a
form of ‘insurance policy’ – something you enter into
now and which aims to protect you against problems
that might arise in the future.
Victory in Europe Day
75th Anniversary on May 8th 2020
When VE (Victory in Europe) Day dawns on 8
May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell
silent in Europe at the end of the Second World
War. It meant an end to nearly six years of a war
that had cost the lives of millions; had destroyed
homes, families, and cities; and had brought
huge suffering and privations to the populations
of entire countries.
The Imperial War Museum documented
the events and we give a brief account of them.
Preceding VE day and with Berlin surrounded,
Adolf Hitler committed suicide on 30 April 1945.
His named successor was Grand Admiral Karl
Dönitz. During his brief spell as Germany’s
president, Dönitz negotiated an end to the war
with the Allies – whilst seeking to save as many
Germans as possible from falling into Soviet
hands.
German forces. The document of surrender was
signed on behalf of Germany by General Alfred
Jodl and came into effect the following day.
The BBC interrupted its scheduled programming
with a news flash announcing that Victory in
Europe Day would be a national holiday, to take
place the following day. Newspapers ran the
headlines as soon as they could, and special
editions were printed to carry the long-awaited
announcement. The news that the war was over
in Europe soon spread like wildfire across the
world. It wasn’t quite the end of hostilities
however and the world would have to wait until
August 15 for the surrender of Japan and for
peace in the Pacific.
Supreme Allied Commander General Eisenhower
accepted the unconditional surrender of all
HM King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with Princess Elizabeth and
Princess Margaret joined by the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill
VE DAY WAS A
NATIONAL HOLIDAY
A national holiday was declared in Britain for 8
May 1945. In the morning, Churchill had gained
assurances from the Ministry of Food that there
were enough beer supplies in the capital and the
Board of Trade announced that people could
purchase red, white and blue bunting without
using ration coupons.
There were even commemorative items hastily
produced in time for the celebrations, including
‘VE Day’ mugs. Some restaurants had special
‘victory’ menus, too.
Various events were organised to mark the
occasion, including parades, thanksgiving
services and street parties. Communities came
together to share the moment.
Cllr Peter Strachan, Cabinet Member and Armed
Forces Champion said, “I hope that local events
will both celebrate Victory in Europe and also
honour all those that fought so bravely in the
conflict, many of whom lost their lives fighting for
their country and the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Aylesbury Distsrct Council have given out a
number of grants to local organisations to hold
special VE celebrations.
In Beaconsfield the Town Council have put
together a program of special VE events and
Bekonscot Model Village and other organisations
have also planned special events to mark the
occasion. See P34.
Thank you to the War Imperial Museum for their help and
co-operation. We obtained a media licence to re-produce
This year officials have moved the traditional
May bank holiday from Monday 4th May to
Friday 8th May to mark this momentous
occasion. The special day will be an opportunity
to remember and reflect on the sacrifices that
were made during the conflict, and show our
gratitude to those who gave so much, so that we
could live in peace.
Up and down the country people will be
celebrating the holiday, holding their own street
parties and celebrations. Here, closer to home
COMMUNITY NEWS
CSP Tennis Club
bringing the
community together!
On Sunday 8th February Chalfont
St Peter Tennis Club suffered huge
damage from the wrath of storm Ciara.
It was lucky that friends of the club spotted the
clubhouse roof shifted as a result of storm Ciara
and the torrential rain pouring into the interior.
One can only imagine scenes from Wizard of Oz
ensuing! Local roofer Geoff Rogers, the chairman
of the committee, Mike Bird and two of his dog
walking friends kindly helped lift the roof back on
and batten the felt down to prevent further water
gushing into the clubhouse.
Despite the clubhouse being currently out of
bounds, club members still congregated on
Valentines morning to hold an American drive
tournament. It was back to the 1930’s with no
running water or toilet facilities! The clubhouse
is slowly being fixed and luckily the 4 Tiger Turf
courts have not been affected.
The club instils a sense of belonging and holds
a true community spirit for all those that are
members. Their annual charity fundraisers are very
successful and this year have decided to help the
CSP Community Centre re-build. Their annual
open day has been set for Sunday 26th April and
to celebrate Victory in Europe 75th anniversary,
they are holding a free public event. See advert.
The clubhouse may not be back to its original
state for these events, but the people belonging
to the club make it a true community hub - not
just bricks and mortar. Come and see for
yourself. For more information contact Paul:
A strong wind could easily take down a timber fence
causing the panels to need repair or replacement, but
if you work on the basis that a good quality timber
fence will generally be guaranteed for 15 Years then it
can be estimated as follows: really good quality fence
treatments can protect your fence for up to 5 years but
after an initial treatment this is still 3 further treatments
to get you to 15 years, 5 if you go to the end of the
ColourFence guarantee of 25 years.
You are probably going to have to clean your wooden
fence annually with an algae remover or something
similar to keep it looking as it did when it was newly
installed. Based on a 2017 survey by Foxtons, the
typical British garden is 45x36ft, which equates to
around 21 traditional fence panels. This means that
over the 15-year lifespan of your timber fence you are
looking at investing around £550 in consumables, not
including brushes, brush cleaner or dust sheets etc.
This also equates to about 70 hours of labour over the
years, more if you need to paint more frequently or
undertake repairs.
this additional 10 years
you could be looking at another £300 of treatments
over 40 more hours. Add to this that a significant
number of the panels may need replacing and you
could be shelling out in excess of £2,000 for new
panels and fitting. To add insult to injury, this only treats
one side of your fence: you may well be relying on
your neighbours to maintain their side and if they don’t
keep up their side of the bargain so to speak, the life of
your fence could be significantly impacted.
So, whilst the initial £105 cost of a typical ColourFence
panel, compared with around £90 for equivalent
timber feather edge fencing, may seem high, when
you consider the £50 of treatments, 7 hours of labour
and £45 of repair/replacements per panel that you
save over the 25-year lifetime of the ColourFence,
the value becomes apparent.
Soap Suds… TV’s domestic abuse
storylines are not pure fiction
For fans of top TV soaps in the UK, recent
storylines made for uncomfortable viewing.
No spoilers here but at time of going to press here’s a
snapshot. In Albert Square, one of the characters has
been stalked by her own abuser’s son; on Emmerdale,
we’ve seen domestic abuse at its worst, both physical
and emotional; and on the cobbles, as Coronation
Street celebrated its 10,000th episode, we witnessed
a classic coercive control situation with unrelenting
manipulation of one of the characters.
Our soaps are supposed to be a break from reality
for viewers, but some may well be watching with an
entirely different perspective. Sadly these storylines
are far from fictional and the contents could well be
very close to home for some.
Domestic abuse tragically happens far too often in
reality. Victims suffer from many forms of abuse, not
just those highlighted in TV programmes. Domestic
abuse can include any of the following:
· Physical abuse · Sexual abuse
· Harassment, in person or online · Stalking
· Psychological and/or emotional abuse
· Controlling or coercive behaviour
· Financial abuse
Victims of domestic abuse need support, help
and guidance from many different experts. The
breakdown of any relationship can be stressful, but
when there are complicating factors such as abuse,
it is imperative to get expert help. At Rayden Solicitors
we have a large team of family law specialists who
have a significant experience in such high conflict
cases. We become part of that support network,
providing the expert legal advice needed which will
in turn allow victims to heal and recover and look
forward to a happy future.
BUSINESS NEWS
Roadmap to
Retirement
In Australia, youngsters are
encouraged to look forward
to their “Golden Years”.
In the UK we refer to this period of our lives
as retirement, but for some reason this
doesn’t seem to have quite the same ring
to it. Golden years is when we plan to have
time to do the things we’ve dreamt of, when
work stress is behind us, filling our days
with sightseeing and pastimes rather than
commuting and meetings.
Of course, those golden years don’t just
appear, they do require quite a bit of planning
and our Roadmap to Retirement we hope
will help our clients adopt this golden years’
culture.
Roadmap to Retirement isn’t just a brochure,
it’s a financial target. We have tried to identify
where clients should be and what they
should be considering at various stages
along the journey. We fully accept there will
be many detours as this journey progresses;
perhaps house purchase, starting a family,
changing jobs and further down the road,
maybe helping children onto the property
ladder. However, our Wealth Management
program will help you get back on the road,
with a tank full of fuel ready for the next
stretch.
All this journey stuff might sound a bit
fanciful, but the analogy is actually pretty
good. Any long journey requires some
detailed planning and also contingencies
when things don’t quite go to plan. Our
cashflow planning technology is the
backbone to how we map out the route.
Once we have a framework in place, that’s
when clients can start to work towards the
goals, we have helped identify with them.
Along the road, we will stop now and then
to check where we are and decide whether
we need to pick up the pace or maybe have
a bit more in the tank than expected.
We often wonder whether deep down David
Bowie wanted to be a financial adviser when
he wrote ‘Golden Years’ back in 1975!
Beaconsfield
Soon to be celebrating our second
Beaconsfield. The time has simply flown by!
Having found our niche with a great selection of
brands including Anonyme Designers, Nu Denmark,
Charli, Rosemunde to name but a few. We also
have many more new brands joining in the spring
including Paige Denim, Elli and Roisin Linnane
to add to the timeless and ageless elegance for
today’s women. With a combination of quality at
affordable prices, with a stylish edge.
In today’s world of fashion there is a strong focus
on sustainability. We are really pleased to announce
that we will be stocking a new brand launching
in the UK called Storm & Marie that epitomise
effortless, honest and feminine designs by
delivering fabrics that lead the way to a future of
responsible manufacturing and distribution within
the industry.
In the past year we have added lots of exciting
jewellery and gifts made in the UK by other like
minded creatives, including candles by Illumine,
jewellery by Van Peterson Designs and perfume by
Gallivant. Helping to make our High Street shop
more of a destination.
We are planning events for the year ahead including
our now famous in store fashion shows that have
been a complete sell out. All of the money raised
in the ticket sales is donated to Williams Fund a
charity that assists in the research into childhood
cancer, and these have been a huge success. Dates
yet to be announced, but to keep informed please
DINING
Suum Kitchen -
traditional
Vietnamese cuisine
in Marlow
Established in late 2017, the Suum
Vietnamese kitchen has brought a
unique culinary experience to the heart
of Marlow, enchanting taste buds with
the sensations of traditional Vietnamese
cuisine. The name “Suum” is actually
a creative piece of wordplay derived
from “sum vầy”, translating to a “cozy
gathering around the dining table” -
which is more than conveyed by the
restaurant’s warm, welcoming and
well-lit aesthetic.
Conceived by owners Nhan and Pham,
the restaurant was brought to life with
the goal of showcasing the rich palate of
Vietnamese cuisine to friends and customers.
The elaborate menu Suum offers depicts a
variety of aromatic dishes, which stay true to
original recipes, in an attempt to recreate a
traditional homely experience. All of the food
options are prepared with high quality fresh
ingredients, inspired by the myriad of aromas
characteristic to the gardens and rivers of the
Red River delta.
James Cooklin
Suum’s Cuisine:
Classical Vietnamese cuisine is typified
by balancing fresh ingredients and
textures, which complement each other,
to stimulate the five fundamental taste
senses: spicy, sour, bitter, salty and sweet.
Throughout Suum’s menu these five
elements are consistently portrayed
within each dish, culminating in both
delicious and healthy food. Additionally,
the traditional replacement of wheat
with rice noodles and rice papers makes
the vast majority of dishes naturally
gluten-free. Suum offers refined lunch
and dinner menus showcasing a multitude
of traditional dishes,including banh-mi
baguettes, wok-fried noodles and many
more localised treats!
Drink Menu
To drink, we sampled a
couple of local Vietnamese
beverages: Saigon and
Hanoi beers. These two
drinks are produced by
the Habeco and Sabeco
breweries respectively,
and are among the most
popular breweries in
Vietnam. The beers were
crisp, refreshing and a
perfect supplement to the
meal. There are plenty of
wines, non alcoholic drinks
and other beverages to
choose from if you don’t
fancy a beer.
Food Menu
Our starters consisted of a
hoisin wrap and roll roast
duck, chilli king prawns and
squid, and pan fried scallops
in a garlic ginger dressing. I
was amazed by the duck dish
as it came with all the fillings
and a generous portion of
succulent meat, deliciously
interactive! All of the starters
were incredibly fresh and
packed full of flavour,
especially the green seafood
dip for the scallops!
The main courses enveloped
multiple intriguing dishes,
with the highlights being
the “childhood combo” and
the aptly named, “mama’s
food”. The “childhood
combo” consisted of a bed
of sticky rice topped with
chicken breast, Vietnamese
sausage and shiitake
mushrooms, all of which
were smothered in a sweet
pearlescent glaze – where
was this in my childhood?
“Mamas food” arrived
as four separate plates:
seasonal vegetables,
vegetable soup, salad and
a mouth-watering cut of
slow braised pork belly –
exquisitely moreish.
In summary, the Suum
Vietnamese kitchen
showcased a masterclass
of traditional cookery,
transporting my taste buds
to the heart of the Red
River Delta. An incredibly
underrated cuisine and a
must for Asian fanatics!
Green Goddess
Author of Save
Pounds and the Planet
Hi, I’m Jeannette Buckle
and I am passionate about
our planet. In my book I
share hundreds of planetfriendly
tips that save you
time and money too.
With the first signs of spring, it’s the perfect
time to think about creating a nice home in your
garden for bees too. Let’s face it, without bees
and other pollinators, we would all go hungry!
Gardens make up about 25% of our urban land,
so we can all make a real difference.
6 green top bee friendly tips for your garden:
• Let nature take charge. Work with it, not
against it, so beneficial creatures can thrive.
Use a water butt instead of tap. Leave areas to
re-wild to encourage hedgehogs too.
• Best to use no or less chemicals in the garden,
be it fertilizers, weed or bug killers. They do
more harm than good.
• Use natural fertilizers like home compost for
improved soil structure, to add nutrients and
improve water retaining properties. Grass
clippings for the lawn, cut up banana skins
around plants and to get rid of aphids, coffee
grounds around acid loving plants and nettles
are just some easy free natural fertilizers.
• Leave pruning new green shoots on your
gooseberry bush until they have white fly, for
example.
• Pick bee friendly plants when buying new or
notice the plants that thrive and/or ones the
bees like and thin out and replant.
• Weeds you don’t like – pull up by hand or
pour left over boiling kettle water. Deadhead
their flowers straight away before they spread
their seed.
Beaconsfield is
awarded ‘Plastic
Free Communities’
status as it takes action
on single-use plastic
Beaconsfield has joined a network of
communities across the UK who are leading
the way to tackle throw away plastic at source.
The town, the first in Buckinghamshire, has
been awarded Plastic Free Community status
by marine conservation charity, Surfers Against
Sewage (SAS), in recognition of the work it has
done to start reducing the impact of single-use
plastic on the environment.
Local resident Jackie Slipper and a small core team
started the campaign in early 2018 to raise awareness
in the town of the need to refill, re-use and recycle
and to reduce dependence on single use plastics.
Registering with the SAS Plastic Free Communities
movement, Jackie, Catherine, Ruth, Ian, Russ, Emma
and Nick pulled together key organisations and
businesses in the town to put in place a five-point
plan. The objectives included; setting up a community
led steering group, encouraging the use of the SAS
Plastic Free Schools education programme, getting
local council commitment and working with local
businesses, organisations and community groups
to spread the word and minimise the amount of
disposable plastics they use.
The team received excellent co-operation and interest
from community groups. They are still actively working
with the Beaconsfield WI to install a drinking fountain
on the town green.
Businesses both large and small have worked with
the team to obtain SAS Plastic Free Status. The
National Film and Television School, Sargent-Disc and
Beckonscot Model Village have all obtained Plastic
Free Champion status as have local café/restaurants,
Benedict’s Store, The Beech House and Fego. All have
removed at least three single use plastic items and
showed tremendous support for the project.
The team attended the
annual Beaconsfield
Now community
events, generating
much interest. Working
with Beaconsfield WI,
a project to install a
drinking fountain and
bottle refill station
was launched, with a
petition in May 2018.
This received strong support from members of the
public, local councillors and representatives from local
ENVIRONMENTAL
community organisations. In May 2019 we received the
highest number of votes in ‘Beaconsfield Decides’, a
competition set up by Bucks County Council for local
people to vote for community projects they thought
should get funding, resulting in a grant of £5000.
The team has visited many local organisations, schools,
businesses and youth groups. Waitrose Beaconsfield
has been very supportive, as have Beaconsfield Town
Council and The Beaconsfield Society.
The team are absolutely delighted to have obtained
the Plastic Free Communities Status for a home
counties town. They have worked for two years to
achieve this and encourage change. The project is of
course on-going, they hope that achieving this status
will encourage other businesses to contact them to
obtain Plastic Free Champion status for themselves.
Beaconsfield is not yet completely free of single use
plastics and the team will continue to encourage all
citizens of the town to re-use, refill, recycle and avoid
unnecessary single use plastic.
The Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community
network aims to free the places where we live from
single-use. Using the five point plan the aim is to
empower communities to kick start local grassroots
action, which can then be built upon.
The marine conservation charity, based in St Agnes in
Cornwall, says it wants to unite communities to tackle
avoidable plastic from the beach all the way back to
the brands and businesses who create it. It says it is not
about removing all plastic from our lives, but kicking
our addiction to throwaway plastic and changing the
system that produces it.
Rachel Yates, SAS Plastic Free Communities
Project Officer, said: “It’s great to see the work that
Beaconsfield has done to reduce the availability of
avoidable plastics, raise awareness and encourage
people to refill and reuse.
“We have almost seven hundred communities across
the UK working to reduce single use plastic and the
impact it has on our environment. Every step those
communities and the individuals in them take is a step
towards tackling the problem at source, challenging
our throwaway culture and encouraging the habit and
system changes we need to see.”
