Ho sempre pensato che la memoria storica condizioni anche la cultura. Sono
convinto che molte delle difficoltà che ancora oggi abbiamo nel dibattere su
temi come l’immigrazione o la discriminazione dipendano dal fatto di volerci
percepire come un popolo “monocolore”, composto cioè di persone dalla
pelle bianca.

Cinque anni fa BHMF ha avviato il piano di recupero per affrontare lo stato di emergenza che
circonda l’appiattimento e la cancellazione della storia Nera nel contesto italiano. Il lavoro
consisteva nel creare una rete di persone disposte a utilizzare le proprie risorse, energia,
tempo e menti per impegnarsi attivamente nel recupero critico della storia e del futuro per le
popolazioni afro-discendenti e come conseguenza per tutti. Questo sforzo collettivo ha visto
Firenze in prima linea in un movimento tanto necessario da mostrare non solo passivamente
l’apprezzamento per la ricchezza culturale che questa iniziativa rappresenta, ma per essere
proattivo nella lotta contro la violenza della cancellazione e per attuare l’atto di ricordare.
Obbligato è una meditazione sugli obblighi sociali, morali e comuni. Attingendo a uno dei
principi fondanti del cosmopolitismo, quello di un obbligo morale verso tutti gli umani, questa
edizione esamina ciò che Léopold Sédar Senghor dichiarò in un discorso a Palazzo Vecchio nel
1962 come il ruolo dell’Africa nel mondo del ripristino di una piena umanità affinché il mondo
potesse riprendersi dal deficit reso attraverso l’oppressione, lo sfruttamento e l’amnesia storica
intorno al rapporto con il continente. Nel jazz Obbligato è un termine che indica una contro
melodia che può avere pari importanza e dominio come la linea di melodia centrale. In un
momento in cui i media e numerosi leader politici hanno spinto la società a temere l’estinzione
di una storia locale attraverso l’inclusione di prospettive alternative, questi eventi servono a
ricordare che quando abbiamo più voci e storie abbiamo una comprensione più completa
della storia stessa e un rinnovato senso di umanità per tutti. Attraverso nostri oltre 50 eventi
invitiamo una visione di una Firenze attiva per gli ultimi 5 anni nella sua celebrazione di diversità
culturale e leader di una celebrazione della ricchezza che comporta per la città.
*Vorremmo dedicare questa quinta edizione di BHMF a Mauro Valeri (1960-2019) per
dichiarire che senza la sua ricerca e voce tante delle figure afro-italiane della storia sarebbero
con molta probabilità ancora sepolte nell’oscurità.

Five Years ago BHMF initiated the recovery plan to address the state of
emergency surrounding the flattening and erasure of Black History in
the Italian context. The work consisted in creating a network of people
willing to use their own resources, energy, time and minds to actively
engage in the critical recovery of history and of the future for Afro-
Descendent peoples and as a consequence for all. This collective effort
has seen Florence at the forefront of a much needed movement to not
only passively show appreciation for the cultural wealth that this initiative
represents but to be pro-active in combatting the violence of erasure and
to enact remembrance.
Obbligato (obliged in English) is a meditation on social, moral and
communal obligations. Drawing upon one of the founding principles of
cosmopolitanism, that of a moral obligation towards all humans, this
edition looks at what Léopold Sédar Senghor stated in a speech at Palazzo
Vecchio in 1962 as Africa’s role in world of restoring a full humanity so
that the world may recover from the deficit rendered through oppression,
exploitation and historical amnesia. In jazz Obbligato is a counter melody
that can have equal importance and dominance as the central melody line.
In a moment where media and numerous political leaders have pushed
society to fear the extinguishing of one history through the inclusion of
alternative perspectives, these events serve as a reminder that when we
have multiple voices and histories we have a more full understanding of
history itself.
*We would like to dedicate this fifth edition of BHMF to Mauro
Valeri(1960-2019) in acknowledgement that without his research and his
voice many of the stories of Afro-Italians of history would most likely still be
buried in obscurity.

Samiya Bashir
Un coronagrafo è uno strumento per il telescopio che
blocca la luce di una stella in modo che gli oggetti vicini,
altrimenti nascosti vengano rivelati e resi più chiari. In questa
performance Samiya Bashir, Vincitrice della Rome Prize
dell’American Academy in Rome, attinge una doppia corona di
sonetti dallo stesso titolo dal suo libro Field Theories del 2017
pubblicato da Nightboat Books. In collaborazione con Syracuse

A coronagraph is an attachment for a telescope that
blocks out the light of a star so that objects that are
nearby, otherwise hidden are revealed and rendered clearer. In
this performance Rome Prize Fellow at the
American Academy in Rome Samiya Bashir draws upon a
double crown of sonnets of the same title from her 2017
book Field Theories published by Nightboat Books.

La necessità di spazi sicuri di solidarietà, collettività e dialogo è in costante aumento
in un contesto in cui l’emarginazione e lo stigma sociale segnano gli artisti emergenti
della diaspora africana nel mondo. Per il contesto italiano e la realtà socio-culturale
degli italiani neri, la necessità di uno scambio è profonda. YGBI Research Residency
and Training Program è un’esperienza collettiva nata da una collaborazione tra BHMF,
OCAD e The Student Hotel per svolgersi negli studi di OCAD e nelle aule e negli
auditorium di The Student Hotel in coincidenza con i primi 10 giorni del Black History
Month Firenze.
Il curatore internazionale Simone Frangi ha facilitato la selezione di giovani artisti
con sede in Italia per il progetto. Questi artisti sono invitati a trascorrere 10 giorni
insieme lavorando negli studi dell’OCAD insieme a una serie di incontri, dialoghi
ed eventi curati da Black History Month Florence, progettati per stimolare il loro
lavoro e processo. L’esperienza in studio è supervisionata e guidata dalla curatrice
internazionale Andrea Fatona, professoressa all’OCAD insieme a leaf jerlefia, recente
alunna dell’OCAD e curatrice / artista. Le conversazioni contestualizzate nell’ambito
dei Dialoghi diasporici alimentano lo scambio e danno una prospettiva curatoriale
intesa a inquadrare pianificazione di una mostra e la scrittura per accompagnare
questo progetto.

The need for safe spaces of solidarity, collectivity and dialogue is ever growing in a
context where marginalization and social stigma mark emerging artists of the African
Diaspora worldwide. For the Italian context and the socio-cultural reality of Black
Italians, the need for exchange is profound. YGBI Research Residency and Training
Program is a collective studio experience born from a collaboration between BHMF,
OCAD and The Student Hotel to take place in the studios of OCAD and the classrooms
and auditoriums of The Student Hotel coinciding with the first 10 days of Black History
Month Florence.
International curator Simone Frangi has facilitated the selection of young artists
based in Italy for the project. These artists are invited to spend 10 days together
working in the studios of OCAD in tandem with a range of encounters, dialogues and
events curated by Black History Month Florence designed to stimulate their work
and process. The studio experience is overseen and guided by International Curator
Andrea Fatona, a professor at OCAD together with leaf jerlefia, recent alumnus
from OCAD and curator/artist as well. The conversations contextualized under the
framework of Diasporic Dialogues, fuel the exchange and to lend a curatorial outlook
intended to frame the planning of a resulting exhibition and the writing to accompany
this project.

passato sono rimosse dall’archivio della nostra memoria
culturale: quando si crea un vuoto che colma di violenza e non di
prospettive dialogiche la vacuità dei gesti.

Fra quanti hanno attraversato gli Uffizi o la Galleria Palatina
di Palazzo Pitti da un piano all’altro, anche all’osservatore più
scrupoloso può essere sfuggita la presenza nella collezione di
volti provenienti dall’Africa nera. Piuttosto che a un difetto di
rappresentanza (i soli spazi principali espongono oltre 20 ritratti
di interesse), la svista va imputata all’inquadramento storico e
storico-artistico che orienta il percorso del visitatore di sala in
sala accrescendo l’effetto di marginalizzazione. On Being Present
è un progetto di ricerca gestito su piattaforma virtuale tramite il
sito delle Gallerie degli Uffizi; lanciato nel 2020 nel quadro di una
collaborazione tra Black History Month Florence e le Gallerie degli
Uffizi, iniziativa ruota intorno alle vicende e al contest storico della
presenza africana in una serie di dipinti disseminati sia nella Galleria
delle Statue e delle Pitture sia nella Galleria Palatina. Ispirato a una
nutrita serie di saggi accademici e mostre di recente allestimento, il
progetto mira al recupero dell’identità Nera dal cuore di una delle

For anyone who has walked the floors of the Galleria degli Uffizi or of Palazzo Pitti’s
Galleria Palatina with an acute eye for detail, it may have been possible to miss the
presence of Black African figures in the collection. This is not due to their lack of
representation, counting over 20 figures in the main spaces alone, but speaks more
to the historical and art historical frameworks within which viewers navigate these
spaces contributing to their obscurity. On Being Present is a research project with
a virtual platform via the website of the Galleria degli Uffizi launched in February
2020 as a collaboration between Black History Month Florence and the Galleria
degli Uffizi that highlights the histories and historical context of the Black African
figures present in a range of paintings throughout the Galleria degli Uffizi and
Palazzo Pitti. Drawing upon a plethora of scholarly works and exhibitions in recent
history, this project is a recovery of Blackness from directly within one of the most

Forti dall’esperienza quadriennale fiorentina e dell’implicazione
di varie istituzioni toscane nel processo organizzativo e alla
concretizzazione di questa iniziativa, crediamo che sia giunta l’ora di
approdare a Bologna città dell’accoglienza per eccellenza in Emilia
Romagna.
Come estensione di BHMF siamo lieti di inaugurare la prima
edizione che si svolgerà dal 02 Febbraio al 1 Marzo 2020 e si
sviluppa in vari ambiti distribuiti in varie arie della città e delle sue
perifierie.
_Fortified by the four-year experience of Florence and the
implementation of various Tuscan institutions in the organizational
process and the realization of this initiative, we believe that the
time for arriving in Bologna, the city of hospitality par excellence in
Emilia Romagna, has come.
As an extension of the BHMF we are happy to announce the first
