COLUMNLewes Out LoudPlenty more HentyI think we would all agreethat ‘take care’ is very goodadvice, whoever you are andwhatever you’re doing. I’mnot so sure, however, about‘Take That’. I mention thisbecause, in one of many travelsupplements recently, I readthat singer, Gary Barlow, hasbeen appointed by P & O asmusical director of ‘an intimatelate-night music bar’ onthe 5,200 passenger liner Ionacruising from Southamptonto the Norwegian fjords inthe summer. He will also join a trip to Spain andPortugal apparently.Intimate? With over 5,000 others on board? Thatdoesn’t sound very intimate to me! Now I don’twant Gary’s Take That fans to take umbrage ifthey’re reading this! The point I’m struggling tomake is that when I plan a holiday, whether it’s ona ship or by air, I want it to be carefree and that Ibelieve is nigh impossible these days.First there’s the packing. Then there’s intrusivesecurity at the airport, delayed flights andcrowded aircraft. A cruise? The more popularthese have become, the ships are getting bigger,destinations more crowded and don’t forgetchanging weather patterns.The Bay of Biscay has always had a bad reputationfor seafarers. Very recently, Sylvia and Iwere returning from a foreshortened visit to theCanary Islands aboard Fred Olsen’s Braemar. Forthe final four days, heading home to Southampton,we were subjected to force 9/10 seaconditions which Croatian captain, Jozo Glavic,described as a ‘force majeure’.Batten down the hatches,Gary, is my advice as you andyour intimate music bar headfor the Lofoten Islands anddon’t forget the Kwells!So holidays at home again in2020? In good ol’ carefreeLewes? Well I don’t knowabout carefree but it iscertainly a caring town and Ihave recent evidence of this.At a meeting of the RiversideClub a few weeks back, wepresented my radio play aboutillustrator, Raymond Briggs, to an appreciativeaudience of senior citizens.This time it was on behalf of the Chestnut TreeHouse charity, and at the end one charming ladycame up to me and politely asked where the ‘collectingbox’ was. When I said that we, the players,received no fee for our thespian endeavours, sheinsisted on handing me a monetary note whichI gratefully accepted and added to the moneyalready raised. Unusually for me, I didn’t get hername but she did say that she was a Viva Lewesreader, so let me now thank her for caring.On a very sad note, one member of our small castwas unable to make the afternoon performancebecause, we learned, he was very ill in a Brightonhospital. I only knew Derek Watts, theatredirector, writer and good citizen of Lewes, fora few short years. He enjoyed his announcingrole with us and Stephen, Kevin and I valued hisprofessional participation, freely given. Dereksubsequently died on January 16.John Henty37
