MUSIC.........................Monica DJsTechno at the TempestMonica are a DJ duo who havebeen pushing the boundariesof the Brighton club scene,moving bodies and openingminds through a sharedpassion for underground dancemusic. They’ve become regularson Codesouth FM and atthe Green Door Store’s Berlin-Brighton night.This month they bring the fourth instalmentof their Foucault event to the Tempest Inn onBrighton seafront, with a guest appearance fromTunisian-Berlin producer Skatman.What is Berlin-Brighton? It’s a monthly technonight, run by the infamous, glittery German thatis Markus Saarländer. To mark its 6th anniversaryit’s just moved to a new and bigger homeat Chalk. We’ll miss it being at the Green DoorStore; it was small but a really special space. Wecan’t thank Markus enough for the love, supportand trust he has given us over the years.What do you consider a perfect club atmosphere?First of all, fewer phones, low ceilingsand minimal lighting – easy right? Music cansometimes catch people off guard. It can challengethem; to let go of themselves and enjoythe moment. And having someone film youdoing that isn’t ideal!Tell us about your Foucault night at the TempestInn... We want to showcase the music andartists we really love and admire. Our guest thistime is Scatcity Records boss, Skatman, all theway from Berlin. His sound caught our attentionvery early on and it’s a real pleasure to have himjoining us. We’ll be on support duties, along withMarkus Saarländer and Faide. Most likely we willbe drinking a few tequilas andhaving a good dance.What’s the idea behindthese nights? The inspirationcomes from Michel Foucault’sconcept of heterotopia, whichwe learned about on a boatparty in Croatia! We aren’tphilosophy students, but for some reason we wereimmediately drawn to this idea... that spaces havemore layers of meaning than meet the eye.Such as a club? Well yeah, some people hearthe kick drum or the vocal and they dance tothat. But if you wander around you see peopledancing to different elements in the music –the low synths or the off-beat percussion. Westrive to play music that has many layers to it:the weird and ever wonderful, strange noises,trippy percussion or pitched-down vocals talkingabout the tides of time... haha, for us that’sthe beauty of music.Do you have go-to tunes you know will geta good reaction? I have thoroughly enjoyedplaying Terrace by Rampa over the last year. It’sa very dancefloor-ready track. Also Skatman’strack Psyche has blown away a dancefloor for uson many occasions.What would you like to play if you thoughtyou could get away with it? We have always saidthat if (when!) we get to close the main room atthe DC10 club in Ibiza, we would love to playPeter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer as the last track.That would be pretty special!As told to Ben Bailey by Owen GriffithsFoucault, Tempest Inn, Sat 14th March, 10pm(free entry)....51....
