A letter from the Curate

Dear Friends,

As I write this I find myself reflecting on the selection of ‘days’ we have recently

spent in appreciation of or in remembrance of certain things. Of course, although it

may seem long ago now, we have celebrated Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

More recently, we have seen Australia Day, Burns Night and Holocaust Memorial

Day.

This month we look forward to Valentine’s Day, Shrove Tuesday and Ash

Wednesday.

In the busy-ness and rush of our everyday lives it’s easy to forget things, or to put

off thinking about them until a less busy time, so increasingly it seems important to

allocate a certain time for reflection and days like those I have mentioned are

helpful in allowing us to stop and think.

As I consider the days coming up this month I am cheered by the encouragement to

celebrate love on Valentine’s Day, remembering especially what John wrote in his

letter (1 John 4:19) that ‘we love because God first loved us.’

It’s that love we can continue to reflect on as we approach Lent through Shrove

Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Lent is traditionally a time of repentance – which

means a turning away from old ways and less helpful paths.

I wonder, then, if you might consider joining me in taking time, as Lent approaches,

to stop and think about what small change you might make in your life?

There is always plenty of inspiration and help available at church whether you find

that during services, Lent courses or simply by spending time in fellowship with

others or service to the community.

I’ll look forward to hearing how you get on!

Blessings,

Claire

Parish News

Lead theft in our diocese

The past 12 months have been a particularly difficult year for many of our parishes

due to a significant rise in lead thefts. In total, 30 churches have been targeted, and

despite the arrest of four suspects in December 2019 the problem has not abated –

within the first two weeks of the new year two further thefts had taken place.

Lead theft is a devastating crime not only for the parish, but also for the wider

community. The cost involved for the replacement of the lead using terne-coated

stainless steel – a far less attractive material for metal thieves – can be

considerable. Most insurers will cover the cost of a replacement roof if the church is

alarmed, has SmartWater and all of the appropriate signage. Where a church

doesn’t have an alarm, but has the other precautions it is likely the pay-out will be

capped at around £7500. With the latter the net result is that parishes have to find

the repair and reinstatement costs from a combination of church funds and

charitable grant givers.

On average the replacement of an aisle roof can cost in the region of £30,000, and

a nave roof, with more scaffolding involved, can be as much as £70–80,000.

Therefore, it is in everybody’s interests to try and minimise the risk of lead theft

from a church. With this in mind, and if there is lead at your church, here is some

advice:

• Make sure that where you already have SmartWater or similar it is up to

date, registered and the appropriate signage has been installed.

• If you have an alarm ensure it is checked regularly and serviced as

required.

• Be on the alert for suspicious activity around the church and ask

parishioners who live close to the church to be especially vigilant. Any

suspicious activity can be reported using the police 101 number, and if

you think a crime is in progress then ring 999.

Further advice about lead theft can be found on the diocesan website, where there

is also advice on what to do if the worst happens and who to contact in the

diocesan Church Buildings department if it does.

Is this a Fast

To keep the larder lean?

And clean

From fat of Veals and

Sheep?

Is it to quite the dish

Of Flesh, yet still

To fill

The platter high with Fish?

Is it to fast an hour

Or rag’d to go

Or show

A downcast look, or sour?

No; ‘tis a Fast, to dole

Thy sheaf of wheat

And meat

Unto the hungry soul

It is to fast, from strife,

From old debate

And hate;

To circumsise thy life.

To show a heart grief-rent;

To starve thy sin

Not Bin;

And that’s to keep thy Lent

Parish News

What a wonderful event this was for the community!

Trees made from bottle tops, paper cups,

knitting needles; trees decorated with bridal

fabrics, campfires and eyeballs; trees for

everyone to write prayers for those who have

been born, were married or have been lost to

us.

The Primary School made a supreme effort with

a tree of prayer baubles. Each child had written

a personal prayer displayed on their tree and

offered the opportunity for everyone to add their

own. The tree

was full!

We enjoyed

wonderful

entertainment

from the Women’s Singstitute, the Market Rasen

Ukulele band and Da Capo folk group.

There were, of course, delicious refreshments to

enjoy in the Church Rooms.

Each tree entrant received a certificate in

recognition of their participation. Visitors were

asked to vote for their favourite tree in Adult and

Children’s categories. Rosettes were awarded to:

The winner of the adult category - D Johnson and

sons.

The winner of the children's category - Rainbows.

A fun quiz of seasonal anagrams was won by Sue

and Willy Johnson. The whole event was capped

off by a beautiful service of Evensong led by the Ladies

Diocesan Choir, setting us all up for a wonderful

Christmas season.

We would like to offer a huge THANK YOU to everyone

who helped in any way with the Christmas Tree Festival.

To the tree entrants - we were thrilled by your ingenuity.

To the musicians - we were delighted by your singing

and playing.

To the kitchen staff and bakers - as always, the standard

of your brewing and cakes was excellent.

To the willing band of volunteers - we are always grateful

for your help. Finally, to all the visitors who came

through the door - you are what made it worthwhile.

Vacancy Update.

The closing date for the post of Rector of our Benefice was

the 19 th January. At the time of writing this report I have no

news with regard to any applications received. Interviews

are scheduled to take place during February.

Please stay in touch for any updated news.

Reordering Works.

Following our meeting with the six member team from the

DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) back in November,

they have confirmed their general support for the concept

and plans for what we have set out to achieve although two elements of our initial

design will require further consultation before final plans can be submitted for

approval.

From the feedback received to date, we are happy that the range of works set out

and included in our consultation document can be achieved and will maintain the

integrity and history of our church for the long term.

Once the final scheme has been approved and costed it will be time to think about

fundraising. So, if anyone can offer advice or assistance in working with grant

funding organisations please do not hesitate to make contact with me or any

member of the PCC.

Chris Middleton.

Market Rasen Church of England Primary School

England Primary School.

The appointment will be made by the Lincoln Diocesan Board of Education in

consultation with the PCC of St Thomas’ Church.

attending the school and anyone with a Christian faith can apply.

If you see this as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of our community

then please contact the PCC Secretary for further details at
