There are
NO COSTS to use a
mortgage broker!
We work for you,
not the lenders.
Nancy Trotman 1-888-998-9513
mortgages@nancytrotman.com
Local, Knowledgeable, Professional
“We are fairly new to the area and when we decided to buy a home,
we found using a mortgage broker the easiest way to find the best
financing available. We are very happy we worked with Nancy Trotman
at The Mortgage Centre. It was a great experience!
We can’t thank her enough. Nancy was great to work with.
She was very thorough and professional but friendly and
approachable. She answered all of our questions and concerns.
She made the whole process of getting a mortgage easy; staying
on top of everything every step of the way and made sure all our
deadlines were met.
We appreciate all the time she gave us and highly recommend her for
any mortgage or financing needs.
Hello Pennywise
I am writing to you to express my disbelief
in seeing an advertisement for “Vaxxed II:
The Peoples Truth” on the front cover of
the February 10th edition of Pennywise.
Advertising this movie will cause irreparable
harm in persuading people to turn
away from vaccinating themselves and
their children. The movie is full of pseudoscience
and anecdotal stories on the
“harms” of vaccinations, produced by
a well known anti-vaxxer and fraud Del
Bigtree, and environmentalist Robert
Kennedy Jr.
I am completely for free speech in advertisements
and writing, but this movie
persuades the vulnerable public by cherry
picking the scientific literature and showing
anecdotal evidence. The movie doesn’t
tell the viewers the difference in statistical
power between an anecdotal story or case
report vs. a randomized controlled trial
or systematic review and that case studies
and stories absolutely cannot prove cause
and effect.
I am a pharmacist and what this movie
portrays is that all us health professionals
who were trained to critically analyze
data and read the literature in our own
practice are completely out to lunch and
should not be listened to. I have not had a
single “vaccine injury” like those depicted
in the movie occur in any of the ~2000 injections
I have given, despite the fact that
patients are urged to report them and I
am mandated to relay that info to Health
Canada. A chronically sore arm can be
caused by injecting too high into the
shoulder capsule, which is irrespective
of the physicochemical properties of the
vaccine and more due to injection technique,
and allergic reactions are possible
as with any other substance that is applied,
injected or ingested into the body.
The literature is quite clear on the safety
of vaccines as well, which is literature that
is obviously not presented in the movie.
For every bad outcome the movie presents,
a health professional can pull up a
myriad of highly peer reviewed and statistically
significant studies that will show
that these effects are either unfounded,
non-existent, or incredibly rare.
The last thing we need is a measles or
whooping cough outbreak in the Kootenays,
which is one of the effects the
anti-vaxxers have had in parts of the US
and Canada and can be deadly for infants
or senior citizens. Del Bigtree has been
quoted as saying “They should be allowed
to have the measles if they want the measles.
It’s crazy that there’s this level of intensity
around a trivial childhood illness,”
of which he is blatantly unaware that
there were 142,300 measles related deaths
globally in 2018, and that it is the leading
cause of vaccine-preventable childhood
mortality.
I am at the Pharmacy weekdays, and
when I have time, am more then happy
to answer any questions you might have.
she is learning to be with
children. When you enter the
probably a good huntress. If you are looking for a fluffy young kitty, come in
nîpawistamâsowin:
We Will Stand Up
On a summer day in 2016, a
young Indigenous man named
Colten Boushie died from
a gunshot to the head after
entering Gerald Stanley’s rural
property with his friends. The
emotionally charged trial and
acquittal of Stanley caused
shock and outrage across Canada, capturing international attention
and raising questions about prejudice within the judicial system and
anti-Indigenous racism in the nation.
Award-winning filmmaker Tasha Hubbard follows the journey of
Colten’s family as they search for justice, taking their fight to the
highest echelons of power and, ultimately, to the United Nations.
Hubbard deftly illustrates how the long history of violence against
Indigenous people continues to define life in parts of Canada and
the impact of systems that have been the instruments of colonial
domination for centuries. At once urgent and intimate, nîpawistamâsowin:
We Will Stand Up is a profound portrait of a family
standing up for a more just and fair society for future generations.
North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society is hosting a
free screening of this National Film Board film, Friday, March 13.
12:30-3:30pm at the Langham Cultural Centre. In addition to viewing
the film, this event will include a traditional opening, drumming,
tattooed on your brain...
Whenever there is a need for that service
or product, your first thought is of the
brand that you have seen the most.
The more people you tell in your
relevant market, the more you sell.
Notice to our customers on
Hydro Rates for 2020
Nelson Hydro is pleased to advise our customers
that there will be no general rate increase for 2020.
Revenues in 2019 were stronger than expected. With no
general rate change, the 2020 revenues are forecasted
to be sufficient to fund the 2020 operating budget
while maintaining the existing dividend payment to the
City of Nelson, capital reserve contributions for utility
infrastructure and the increased level of vegetation
management started in 2019.
The 2020 zero % rate change applies to both City and
Rural customers.
The 2020 zero % rate change applies to both Residential
and Commercial customers.
With no rate change, Nelson Hydro will continue to have
amongst the lowest residential rates compared to the
other utilities in BC.
NOTE: Nelson Hydro is currently reviewing rate sharing
across customer classes which may result in a rate redesign.
This would be the subject of a BC Utilities Commission
application and is separate from general rate changes.
An invitation to engage
Celebrating Indigenous knowledge and
culture is at the core of Kootenay Lake
School District’s commitment to Aboriginal
Education and invites the community to
participate in two upcoming initiatives happening
at the Capitol Theatre.
From The Heart: One Day. One Circle, is
happening Thursday, March 5, 6:30 pm,
and presented by Mount Sentinel High
School students. The School District #8 District
Aboriginal Education team will host
Indigenous Culture Celebration on Friday,
March 6, 6 pm.
The theatre art project, From the Heart:
One Day. One Circle, is the culmination of
the hard work and dedication of a small
group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous
students at Mt. Sentinel Secondary that has
been in the works for the past six months.
Mt. Sentinel students, with the support of
their Aboriginal Education teacher Andrea
Mann, have co-created a narrative for the
performance that addresses colonial history,
while also sharing traditional teachings they
learned working with many Elders, Knowledge
Keepers, artists and other community
members.
“I am so proud of these students,” says
Andrea Mann, “for their courage, and for
how they have built a strong and supportive
circle for Indigenous students at our school.”
At its core, the collaborative project
engages with the concepts of Truth, Resurgence
and Reconciliation. Through the
process, the students have created an experimental
performance that fuses theatre,
music, dance and media together to serve as
a vehicle to promote meaningful dialogue
and stimulate collective action toward a
more just and sustainable future.
The project is one of four youth-led explorations
across BC, funded and supported by
VIDEA, a non-profit organization that fosters
justice-focused youth initiatives.
“It is exciting to see them leading and
sharing culture with pride and I really value
the example they are setting for the younger
ones coming up,” says Mann, hoping there
will be a great turn out from the public for
the March 5 performance.
The following evening, March 6 the
district with co-host its 5th annual Indigenous
Culture Celebration at the theatre.
This year’s theme is Honouring Intergenerational
teachings and will include special
guests from the Lower Kootenay Band
(Yaqan Nukiy), the Colville Confederated
Tribes and the Metis nations.
Tickets for both events can be purchased
on the Capitol Theatre website www.capitoltheatre.ca/events/
