EMPEROR XXVIII ANTONIO T. VENTURA,

THE DEDICATED DRAGON EMPEROR OF

INVOLVEMENT, INNOVATION AND INCLUSION

PHOTOS BY: STEVEN MENENDEZ

On Saturday, March 28, 2020, The

Imperial Court of New York will present

their annual benefit and extravaganza,

Night of a Thousand Gowns. This year’s

headlining entertainer is international

recording Artist CeCe Peniston with a

special performance. It is set to take

place at the New York Hilton Midtown

Hotel and will benefit the Hetrick-

Martin Institute and the Hudson Pride

Center. Tickets can be purchased at

icny.tix.com.

I shared questions and answers with

Emperor XXVIII Antonio T. Ventura,

The Dedicated Dragon Emperor of

Involvement, Innovation and Inclusion.

Knowing Michael Perez many years, I can safely attest to the fact that

he is one of the most giving persons on the planet, always mentoring,

sharing advice and never saying no when asked to perform or do

someone a favor.

INTERVIEW

What does your involvement in

The Imperial Court of New York

mean to you as someone so well

rounded and talented in your craft?

Moving to New York City just about

seven years ago (March 2, 2013), I

wanted to expand my involvement

in nonprofit and fundraising efforts

for the LGBTQ+ community. Finding

The Imperial Court of New York three

months into being here was the best

thing that could have happened. This

experience and organization mean the

world to me.

I am super grateful to be able to use

this platform to bring awareness to

organizations that may not get a lot of

support and to bring another level of

support with a group of other dedicated

volunteers, donating their time and

personal energy to make sure our work

continues. I learn from the members

of the ICNY every day and grow from

every experience.

What can the guests look forward

to this year at Night of a Thousand

Gowns?

Guests can look forward to a multi-level

of entertainment and inspiration. From

our headliner, international recording

artist Cece Peniston, to the knighting

of NYC/NJ community warriors (Wendy

Kaplan - Trinity Place Shelter, Marti

Gould Cummings, Chris Dunbar and

Liz Schedl - Hudson Pride Center) to

an amazing drag performance from

NYC star Jahlove Serrano and Rhode

Island queen, Complete Destruction.

Another amazing thing our guests will

be able to look forward to is being part

of an amazing evening that ultimately

supports our LGBTQ+ youth through

our beneficiaries, The Hetrick-Martin

Institute and Hudson Pride Center.

What are you most excited about?

I am most excited about sharing

this evening with loved ones, both

biological and chosen family. This

year has been truly fulfilling and

inspiring. Being able to support the

LGBTQ+ community of New York

City, New Jersey and Long Island has

been humbling and fabulous. Being

able to bring all sorts of amazing

supporters of these causes together

is a very exciting thing to think about.

The connections that can come from

this evening to grow our mission and

connections that could grow the fight

for equality is something that I truly

hope will come from this evening.

What were some of the highlights

of this past year from your point

of view?

Some of the highlights for me from

this year is being able to have been in

a leadership position doing the 50th

anniversary of Stonewall and World

Pride. I am only 31 years old and love

having discussions with survivors of

the LGBTQ+ movement of the 1960s

to 1980s and hearing what was done

and thinking of how far we still have

to come. This year I was privileged to

meet a few Stonewall survivors and

hear their stories. A truly major part

of what I will take from this year is

being able to join the membership

of the ICNY as a team to support 18

different organizations and programs

through our fundraisers and outreach

programs.

How has your former experience

prepared you for your role and

your reign in The Imperial Court of

New York?

Throughout my life, my mother

always instilled in me the importance

of giving back and helping others.

Throughout my life I have held

leadership roles in school bands and

was a resident assistant in college.

This and my drive to make this

world a better place, I feel, helped

with what it takes to be in the role

of monarch of The Imperial Court of

New York.

What are the benefits of becoming

a member of the ICNY?

The biggest benefit to me is finding

expanded family. From the second I

joined the ICNY, I was taken under the

wing of Sugar B. Real and Ritz Kraka,

who are the parents of an amazing

chosen family. The ICNY is a melting

pot of LGBTQ+ individuals with

varying backgrounds, life experiences

and ages—currently ranging from

25 to 85 in age. Just imagine the

combination of stories that can be

brought to the table to evolve the

LGBTQ+ community.

Personally, I enjoy the mission of

the ICNY: We are a 100% volunteer

organization using our personal

talents and energies to fight for

and support the LGBTQ+ and other

communities we live in. I would

encourage anyone curious about

what they do to reach out, come to a

meeting, come to an event, volunteer

at our gala. We are waiting with open

arms to welcome you into this family

and have you join and bring a new

bulb to our chandelier of light.

What inspired you to join?

I was inspired to join the ICNY when

I saw the fun that goes into these

fundraisers and events. Our members

Grandpa and Q.T. Pie introduced

me during Pride 2013, and I was

immediately drawn in seeing the

costumes the ICNY members were

wearing that year and then hearing

how they accomplished things

like fundraising and successfully

providing a new shower

to a youth shelter in need,

bringing entertainment to

care facilities where the

residents aren’t able to

leave the facilities and so

much more. Being able

to bring joy and love to

our community is the

basis of the work I do

and what the ICNY’s

mission is all about.

If you could use

your platform to

say anything you

wanted to, what

would you say?

I would encourage

our community

to be more loving

and inclusive

within ourselves,

especially when it

comes to the age

gaps. I would encourage the younger

generation, of which I am part of,

to listen to stories of our LGBTQ+

seniors—we are living and working

on the backs of these amazing

humans. They paved the way for us

to have the voices we do. Trust and

believe, I am a better human because

of those who came before me, that

I am able to talk to every day and

work to build on their efforts to

evolve the fight and mission. And

on the opposite side, to our seniors:

Encourage our youth to rise up

and continue the fight. Be open to

evolution, and come together with

our youth to be a truly powerful voice

for change within our world and

equality and acceptance for all.

THE STORY OF

PROJECT

MOSES

BY MICK SANDOVAL

THE OUT ARTIST

RELEASES FIRST

SINGLE FROM

HIS ‘BETTER

MAN’ ALBUM

“I grew up in Israel in a very conservative

family,” recalls out artist Project Moses

from his home in NYC. “My dad was

a very strict disciplinarian. I would be

punished for every little thing. My

musical interests were discouraged. My

personal interests were discarded. But

I admired and mimicked him as best I

could to earn his love. Unfortunately, as I

matured and could no longer ignore the

true man I was inside, our values began

to clash.”

Project Moses explores the tumultuous

relationship he had with his now

deceased father in “Missing Half,” the

first single and music video release from

his upcoming visual album, “Better Man.”

The ominous ballad is meant to convey

the sometimes-conflicting feelings many

people have for the people who raised

them.

“The idea for the song came to me

after my dad died in a car accident,” he

continues. “It forced me to reflect on

a relationship that wasn’t always good,

one that left me with a lot of emotional

and psychological scars. Yet, through it

all, I still love my dad and was left feeling

broken inside by his sudden death.”

INTERVIEW

How did you develop your

unique musical style?

My style came about by

listening to a lot of different

artists, from Foreigner and

Pink Floyd (who my dad was

obsessed with) to Paul Anka

and the Spanish and Greek

music my mom listened to. I

enjoyed them all while also

listening obsessively to top 40

hits on the radio.

Is that where your love for

singing stems from?

Funny story. I discovered my

love for singing at the age

of two, singing on a tape

recorder. My mom still has the

tape, and she loves to listen to

it on her Walkman! It’s about

six songs of me mumbling

Israeli hits. It’s really funny.

Then, at the age of 4, my dad

got me my own tape recorder

and a microphone, and I

began making up songs and

melodies.

Your music seems to draw inspiration

from your family.

Yes, I draw from family as well as from

friends, lovers, even enemies. I’d say

life itself is my main inspiration. I think

most songwriters will tell you that as

much as they love to sing about some

obscure concept, it is more powerful

to tell stories from their own lives

that spark happiness, hope, tears or

even anger in others. As long as I

move any kind of cell or membrane

in the listener’s body, my mission is

accomplished.

Was it tough to write about the

tense relationship between you

and your father, especially after his

passing?

Ironically, it wasn’t. It actually felt very

cathartic. It was more difficult to hear

comments from my family. Some were

critical. But the song is simply my

journey, which I needed to tell at my

own time.

dad. It leads me to a cemetery where

my father is buried with the hat and a

scarf that he always wore. As surreal

as it was, it made me deal with a lot of

demons and emotions that I had felt for

many years.

Any plans for a live show?

We’re working on it. In my live shows,

I try to bare my soul and self on stage,

expressing all emotions, the good and

bad. I let it all out without relying on

glitz or glamour.

How about additional music videos?

I’m working on my next music videos

from the “Better Man” album now.

They will be even darker than “Missing

Half,” if that’s possible—a little bit

more thought provoking and sex

oriented. We have one that deals with

drug abuse and its consequences. Just

be prepared with a box of tissues.

What other relationships

are explored on your

upcoming album?

My whole album

explores the important

relationships in my life

that turned me into

who I am today, what

I call a better man. It’s

about learning from your

experiences, no matter

what they are.

The music video for

“Missing Half” is very

powerful.

Shooting it was intense.

In the video, I’m being

BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON

@ianmichaelinwonderland

The week of my 30th birthday (yes,

30—I’m still getting used to saying that),

I went to see a one-man show appropriately

titled Happy Birthday Doug. Turning

30 didn’t exactly thrill me, but I figured

shifting the attention to someone else’s

“birthday” would take off some of the

pressure.

The show is up at Soho Playhouse on

Vandam Street. It was my first time there.

After picking up the tickets for my boyfriend

and myself, we wandered downstairs

to their bar for a glass of red wine,

where we stayed drinking and chatting

with the bartender until they opened the

house.

I thought I

was unfamiliar

with

Droege, until

I Googled

him: He’s

appeared on

an impressive

amount of television

shows,

including “Hot

in Cleveland,”

“How I Met

Your Mother”

and “Reno 911!”,

not to mention

voice work on

one of my favorite

animated shows,

“Bob’s Burgers.”

(He voiced Deirdre,

a woman shopping

for plastic cups for a

street chalk art fair.)

Most people would

recognize

him from his Chloe Sevigny impression

videos (absolutely worth the Google if

you haven’t seen them).

Soho Playhouse is a small theatre, creating

the perfect, intimate setting for

Doug’s birthday party. Droege plays all

of the guests at Doug’s party, showing a

full comedic range, from the drunk friend

who wasn’t invited to the twin-like couple

to the pretentious ex-boyfriend. (My

favorite characterization was the waiter

who knew of Doug’s work.) I won’t spoil

Doug’s surprise guest at the end of the

party, but I will say I haven’t laughed that

hard in quite some time.

I knew all of the characters in my real life:

Hell, I’ve been half of them. Showing up

to parties I purposefully wasn’t invited

to (just to remind them I go where I

want), wearing matching outfits with my

boyfriend (I know, we’re terrible),

pretending that I’m

over an ex because

I’ve got “Really great

things going on”

(meaning I’m still

working the same

job, and I’m still

“working” on a

manuscript). I both

loved and hated

seeing myself in all

of Doug’s guests.

At 60 minutes

with no intermission,

I could

have spent the

whole evening

with Doug’s

diverse group

of friends coming

in and out

of his party.

Droege has

such a seamless,

conversational

approach, at times I nearly talked back to

him as if I were at the party.

Birthday Boy

After packed houses and rave reviews

from “The New York Times” and “The

Daily Beast,” Happy Birthday Doug has

been extended through Sunday, March

29. Tickets are available at happybirthdaydoug.com.

brothers. I’m the

baby of the family. My

parents are divorced,

and both remarried.

I don’t talk to my

biological dad.

Do your friends and

family support your

porn career?

The few family

members that do know

my chosen career

support me, thankfully.

My friends do, too. I

would be heartbroken

and lost without their

encouragement.

What advice would

you give your 13-yearold

self?

I would tell myself to

just keep breathing. It’s

all gonna be OK, kid.

When did you realize

a porn career was for

you?

I started porn as a side

thing, and I found I

enjoyed it. I took a

break for a few years,

but I’m glad to be back.

Who is one person

you would like to

meet?

In the industry, I would

like to meet Cutler X or

Rocco Steele.

They are both giants in

their fields, literally and

metaphorically. Outside

of adult entertainment,

Illenium and Said the

Sky. Both are extremely

emotional and impactful

DJs that have helped me

form who I am.

Are you a raver?

I love a good party. I wish

I was a better dancer.

I enjoy it, but it can

sometimes lead to me

embarrassing myself. I am

good at giving glove light

shows to people at raves.

People often say I’m fairly

great at it.

Describe your perfect

date.

I’m a pretty simple guy.

Meeting a cute man over

coffee in the late afternoon

or maybe a drink in the

early evening sounds like a

perfect first date for me.

Do you believe in love at

first sight?

I used to not believe in

love at first sight, but now I

definitely think I do.

If you had to pick

between Harry or

William...

[Laughing] Harry Potter

over Prince William, and

(EDM DJ) William Black

over Prince Harry.

Have you ever been

dumped?

I prefer not to go into

details.

Fair, but did you deserve

it?

Yes, I deserved it.

Do you have a pet?

Growing up, we had family

pets, and we still have a

black Labrador named

Bo, but he lives with my

parents.

How important is fashion

to you?

Fashion isn’t too important

to me in the sense that I

need to have the latest

trends. I obviously like to

look good, but honestly, if

I feel good in sweats and

a hoodie, that’s gonna be

my fashion.

Let’s play a game. In or

out: “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

Out! I’m not a huge fan of

reality TV shows, although

I do love the memes and

the artistry of the talent.

Slay, queens!

Instagram.

Out! I’ve said it once, and

I’ll say it again: Instagram

unfairly targets and

deactivates the accounts

of sex workers even when

we post things that are

well within community

guidelines. Until they end

this charade crusade,

I won’t make an adult

Instagram. I won’t

amass a fan following

just to have it deleted

on a whim of a prejudiced

admin. It’s not fair to my

fans.

What’s your preferred

social platform?

Twitter (@tylerxxxsweet),

because the free-form

guidelines of Twitter allow

me to be nerdy, hornbally

and cutesy all at the same

time. All those are sides

of me, and I think people

really love to see it all

together.

Back to the game:

iPhone.

In! I love my iPhone. I’ve

had an iPhone since I’ve

been in college, and even

though I never have the

latest and greatest model,

I still like it.

Taylor Swift.

So in! I love Taylor Swift.

I’m not a crazy fanboy,

and I don’t follow celebrity

scandals and all the jazz

on that front. But with that

being said, her albums

have bops on bops.

Where do you see

yourself five years from

now?

Hopefully with a thriving

career, a little more stable

and living in a fun city.

What is the one thing

your fans would be most

surprised to learn about

Tyler Sweet?

I see all the messages I

get in Twitter DMs and

on comment boards,

and although I may not

respond, I never take

compliments for granted.

I take each and every

compliment to heart. On

days when I’m sad, I use

them to keep going, and I

love all of my fans for that.

DRAG RACE SEASON 12 MEET & GREET AT TRL STUDIOS

interview/ GET OUT! MAGAZINE >> GETOUTMAG.COM

that was like as a 16 year old. To be a

30-something who is brave enough

to step into myself and not be afraid

of it–hopefully there will be another

16 year old who sees this season and

really that they don’t have to be afraid

to. That was really important to me and

a big part of why I auditioned. It would

have meant so much for me to see an

Iranian kid on television at that time,

and hopefully I can do that for another

kid with this show. I am just so excited.

What New York City “Drag Race”

alumni do you see that have gone on

to great success and you could pattern

your own career in a similar way?

Well, obviously Bob the Drag Queen,

hello! What is crazy about Bob is that

she and I started drag around the same

time, nine or 10 years ago. I remember

right after she filmed her season and

before it was released, she said to me,

“Jackie, how long have you been doing

drag?” I responded, “Maybe four to

five years.” She said, “The same time

as me, huh? When are you going to

step it up and go to the next level?” I

guess it took me another four years,

but I listened to Bob. That is a career

that would be the envy of any person

in entertainment, much less drag

queens. What passionate supporter

of important causes and a damn good

entertainer at the same time.
